Heidelberg Catechism · Lord's Day 27

73. Why, then, does the Holy Spirit call baptism the washing of regeneration and the washing away of sins?

Answer

God speaks in this way not without good reason. He wants to teach us that just as the uncleanness of the body is washed away by water, so our sins are taken away by the blood and Spirit of Christ. But even more important, by this divine pledge and sign he wants to assure us that we are just as truly washed from our sins spiritually as we are washed with water physically.
