But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment will touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died; And their departure was accounted to be their hurt, And their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace. For even if in the sight of men they be punished, Their hope is full of immortality; And having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good; Because God made trial of them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he proved them, And as a whole burnt offering he accepted them. And in the time of their visitation they will shine forth, And as sparks among stubble they will run to and fro. They will judge nations, and have dominion over peoples; And the Lord will reign over them for evermore. They that trust on him will understand truth, And the faithful will abide with him in love; Because grace and mercy are to his chosen. But the ungodly will be requited even as they reasoned, They which lightly regarded the righteous man, and revolted from the Lord; (For he that sets at nothing wisdom and discipline is miserable;) And void is their hope and their toils unprofitable, And useless are their works: Their wives are foolish, and wicked are their children; Accursed is their begetting. Because happy is the barren that is undefiled, She who has not conceived in transgression; She will have fruit when God visiteth souls. And happy is the eunuch which has wrought no lawless deed with his hands, Nor imagined wicked things against the Lord; For there will be given him for his faithfulness a peculiar favor, And a lot in the sanctuary of the Lord more delightsome than wife or children. For good labors have fruit of great renown; And the root of understanding can’t fail. But children of adulterers will not come to maturity, And the seed of an unlawful bed will vanish away. For if they live long, they will be held in no account, And at the last their old age will be without honor. And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, Nor in the day of decision will they have consolation. For the end of an unrighteous generation is always grievous.

Lukáš 1:1-39

Poněvadž mnozí usilovali sepsati pořádně vypravování těch věcí, kteréž u nás jisté jsou, Jakž nám vydali ti, kteříž od počátku sami viděli, a služebníci toho Slova byli: Vidělo se i mně, kterýž jsem toho všeho pravé povědomosti z gruntu bedlivě došel, tobě o tom pořádně vypsati, výborný Teofile, Abys zvěděl jistotu těch věcí, jimž jsi vyučován. Byl za dnů Heródesa krále Judského kněz nějaký, jménem Zachariáš, z třídy Abiášovy, a manželka jeho ze dcer Aronových, a jméno její Alžběta. Byli pak oba spravedliví před oblíčejem Božím, chodíce ve všech přikázaních a spravedlnostech Páně bez ouhony. A neměli plodu, proto že Alžběta byla neplodná, a oba se byli zstarali ve dnech svých. I stalo se, když on úřad kněžský konal v pořádku třídy své před Bohem, Že vedlé obyčeje úřadu kněžského los naň přišel, aby položil zápal, vejda do chrámu Páně. A všecko množství lidu bylo vně, modlíce se v hodinu zápalu. Tedy ukázal se jemu anděl Páně, stoje na pravé straně oltáře zápalu. A uzřev jej Zachariáš, zstrašil se, a bázeň připadla na něj. I řekl jemu anděl: Neboj se, Zachariáši, neboť jest uslyšána modlitba tvá, a Alžběta manželka tvá porodí tobě syna, a nazůveš jméno jeho Jan. Z čehož budeš míti radost a veselé, a mnozí se z jeho narození budou radovati. Bude zajisté veliký před oblíčejem Páně, a vína i nápoje opojného nebude píti, a Duchem svatým bude naplněn hned od života matky své. A mnohé z synů Izraelských obrátí ku Pánu Bohu jejich. Neboť on předejde před oblíčejem jeho v duchu a v moci Eliášově, aby obrátil srdce otců k synům, a nevěřící k opatrnosti spravedlivých, aby postavil Pánu lid hotový. I řekl Zachariáš andělu: Po čemž to poznám? Nebo já starý jsem, a manželka má zstarala se ve dnech svých. I odpověděv anděl, řekl jemu: Jáť jsem Gabriel, kterýž stojím před oblíčejem Božím, a poslán jsem, abych mluvil s tebou, a tyto věci veselé tobě zvěstoval. A aj, budeš němý, a nebudeš moci mluviti až do dne, v kterémž se tyto věci stanou, proto že jsi neuvěřil řečem mým, kteréž se naplní časem svým. Lid pak očekával Zachariáše, a divili se, že on tak prodléval v chrámě. Vyšed pak, nemohl mluviti k nim. I srozuměli, že vidění viděl v chrámě. Nebo on návěští jim dával, a zůstal němý. I stalo se, když se vyplnili dnové konání úřadu jeho, odšel do domu svého. A po těch dnech počala Alžběta manželka jeho, a tajila se za pět měsíců, řkuci: Že tak mi učinil Pán ve dnech, v nichž vzezřel, aby odjal mé pohanění mezi lidmi. V měsíci pak šestém poslán jest anděl Gabriel od Boha do města Galilejského, kterémuž jméno Nazarét, Ku panně zasnoubené muži, kterémuž jméno bylo Jozef, z domu Davidova, a jméno panny Maria. I všed k ní anděl, dí: Zdráva buď milostí obdařená, Pán s tebou, požehnaná ty mezi ženami. Ona pak uzřevši ho, zarmoutila se nad řečí jeho, a myslila, jaké by to bylo pozdravení. I řekl jí anděl: Neboj se, Maria, nebo jsi nalezla milost u Boha. A počneš v životě, a porodíš syna, a nazůveš jméno jeho Ježíš. Tenť bude veliký, a Syn Nejvyššího slouti bude, a dáť jemu Pán Bůh stolici Davida otce jeho. A kralovati bude v domě Jákobově na věky, a království jeho nebude konce. I řekla Maria andělu: Kterak se to stane, poněvadž já muže nepoznávám? A odpověděv anděl, řekl jí: Duch svatý sstoupí v tě, a moc Nejvyššího zastíní tobě; a protož i to, což se z tebe svatého narodí, slouti bude Syn Boží. A aj, Alžběta, přítelkyně tvá, i ona počala syna v starosti své, a tento jest jí šestý měsíc, kteráž sloula neplodná. Neboť nebude nemožné u Boha žádné slovo. I řekla Maria: Aj, děvka Páně, staniž mi se podlé slova tvého. I odšel od ní anděl. Tedy povstavši Maria v těch dnech, odešla na hory s chvátáním do města Judova.

Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.

2. Korintským 13

Toto potřetí jdu k vám. V ústech dvou neb tří svědků staneť každé slovo. Předpovědělť jsem, a předpovídám podruhé jako přítomný, a nyní nepřítomný píši těm, kteříž prvé hřešili, i jiným všechněm, že přijdu-liť opět znovu, neodpustím, Poněvadž usilujete zkusiti toho, kterýž skrze mne mluví, Krista, kterýžto k vám není nemocný, ale mocný jest v vás. Nebo ačkoli ukřižován jest jako nemocný, ale živ jest z moci Boží. A tak i my mdlí jsme s ním, ale živi budeme s ním, z moci Boží na vás. Sami sebe zkušujte, jste-li u víře; sami sebe ohledujte. Čili sami sebe neznáte, že Ježíš Kristus jest v vás? Leč jste snad zavrženi. Ale naději mám, že poznáte, žeť my nejsme zavrženi. Modlímť se pak Bohu, abyste nic zlého nečinili, ne proto, abychom my se dokonalí ukázali, ale abyste vy to, což jest dobrého, činili, my pak jako zavrženi abychom byli. Neboť nic nemůžeme proti pravdě, ale k pravdě. Radujeme se zajisté, že ač jsme mdlí, ale vy jste silní, a za toť se i modlíme, abyste vy byli dokonalí. Protož toto nepřítomný jsa, píši, abych přítomen jsa, nemusil býti přísný, podlé moci, kterouž mi dal Pán k vzdělání, a ne k zkáze. Naposledy, bratří, mějtež se dobře, dokonalí buďte, potěšujte se, jednostejně smyslte, pokoj mějte, a Bůh lásky a pokoje budeť s vámi. Pozdravtež jedni druhých políbením svatým. Pozdravují vás všickni svatí. Milost Pána Jezukrista, a láska Boží, a účastenství Ducha svatého se všechněmi vámi. Amen.
