A wise judge will instruct his people; And the government of a man of understanding will be well ordered. As is the judge of his people, so are his ministers; And as is the ruler of the city, such are all those who dwell therein. An uninstructed king will destroy his people; And a city will be established through the understanding of the powerful. In the hand of the Lord is the authority of the earth; And in due time he will raise up over it one that is profitable. In the hand of the Lord is the prosperity of a man; And upon the person of the scribe will he lay his honor. Be not angry with your neighbor for every wrong; And do nothing by works of violence. Pride is hateful before the Lord and before men; And in the judgement of both will unrighteousness err. Sovereignty is transferred from nation to nation, Because of iniquities, and deeds of violence, and greed of money. Why is earth and ashes proud? Because in his life he has cast away his bowels. It is a long disease; the physician mocketh: And he is a king today, and tomorrow he will die. For when a man is dead, He will inherit creeping things, and beasts, and worms. It is the beginning of pride when a man departs from the Lord; And his heart is departed from him that made him. For the beginning of pride is sin; And he that keeps it will pour forth abomination. For this cause the Lord brought upon them strange calamities, And overthrew them utterly. The Lord cast down the thrones of rulers, And set the meek in their stead. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, And planted the lowly in their stead. The Lord overthrew the lands of nations, And destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He took some of them away, and destroyed them, And made their memorial to cease from the earth. Pride has not been created for men, Nor wrathful anger for the offspring of women. What manner of seed has honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has honor? those who fear the Lord. What manner of seed has no honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has no honor? those who transgress the commandments. In the midst of kindred he that rules them has honor; And in the eyes of the Lord those who fear him. The rich man, and the honorable, and the poor, Their glorying is the fear of the Lord. It is not right to dishonor a poor man that has understanding; And it is not fitting to glorify a man that is a sinner. The great man, and the judge, and the mighty man, will be glorified; And there is not one of them greater than he that fears the Lord. Free men will minister to a wise servant; And a man that has knowledge will not murmur thereat. Be not over wise in doing your work; And glorify not yourself in the time of your distress. Better is he that labores, and abounds in all things, Than he that glorifieth himself, and lacketh bread. My son, glorify your soul in meekness, And give it honor according to the worthiness thereof. Who will justify him that sins against his own soul? And who will glorify him that dishonors his own life? A poor man is glorified for his knowledge; And a rich man is glorified for his riches. But he that is glorified in poverty, how much more in riches? And he that is inglorious in riches, how much more in poverty?

Přibližovali se pak k němu všickni publikáni a hříšníci, aby ho slyšeli. I reptali farizeové a zákonníci, řkouce: Tento hříšníky přijímá, a jí s nimi. I pověděl jim podobenství toto, řka: Kdyby někdo z vás měl sto ovec, a ztratil by jednu z nich, zdaliž by nenechal devadesáti devíti na poušti, a nešel k té, kteráž zahynula, až by i nalezl ji? A nalezna, vložil by na ramena svá s radostí. A přijda domů, svolal by přátely a sousedy, řka jim: Spolu radujte se se mnou, nebo jsem nalezl ovci svou, kteráž byla zahynula. Pravímť vám, že tak jest radost v nebi nad jedním hříšníkem pokání činícím větší, než nad devadesáti devíti spravedlivými, kteříž nepotřebují pokání. Aneb žena některá mající grošů deset, ztratila-li by jeden groš, zdaliž nezažže svíce, a nemete domu, a nehledá pilně, dokudž nenalezne? A když nalezne, svolá přítelkyně a sousedy, řkuci: Spolu radujte se se mnou, nebo jsem nalezla groš, kterýž jsem byla ztratila. Takť, pravím vám, že jest radost před anděly Božími nad jedním hříšníkem pokání činícím. Řekl také: Člověk jeden měl dva syny. Z nichž mladší řekl otci: Otče, dej mi díl statku, kterýž mně náleží. I rozdělil jim statek. A po nemnohých dnech, shromáždiv všecko mladší ten syn, odšel do daleké krajiny, a tam rozmrhal statek svůj, byv prostopašně živ. A když všecko utratil, stal se hlad veliký v krajině té, a on počal nouzi trpěti. I všed, přídržel se jednoho měštěnína krajiny té; a on jej poslal na pole své, aby pásl vepře. I žádal nasytiti břicho své mlátem, kteréž svině jedly, ale žádný nedával jemu. Přišed pak sám k sobě, řekl: Jak mnozí nájemníci u otce mého hojnost mají chleba, a já hladem mru! Vstana, půjdu k otci svému, a dím jemu: Otče, zhřešil jsem proti nebi a před tebou, Aniž jsem hoden více slouti synem tvým. Učiň mne jako jednoho z nájemníků svých. I vstav, šel k otci svému. A když ještě opodál byl, uzřel jej otec jeho, a milosrdenstvím byv hnut, přiběh, padl na šíji jeho, a políbil ho. I řekl jemu syn: Otče, zhřešil jsem proti nebi a před tebou, aniž jsem hoden více slouti synem tvým. I řekl otec služebníkům svým: Přineste to roucho první, a oblecte jej, a dejte prsten na ruku jeho a obuv na nohy. A přivedouce to tele tučné, zabíte, a hodujíce, buďme veseli. Nebo tento syn můj byl umřel, a zase ožil; byl zahynul, a nalezen jest. I počali veseli býti. Byl pak syn jeho starší na poli. A jda, když se přibližoval k domu, uslyšel zpívání a hluk veselících se. I povolav jednoho z služebníků, otázal se, co by to bylo. A on řekl jemu: Bratr tvůj přišel, i zabil otec tvůj tučné tele, že ho zdravého přijal. I rozhněval se, a nechtěl vjíti. Otec pak jeho vyšed, prosil ho. A on odpověděv, řekl otci: Aj, tolik let sloužím tobě, a nikdy jsem přikázaní tvého nepřestoupil, a však nikdy jsi mi nedal kozelce, abych s přátely svými vesel pobyl. Ale když syn tvůj tento, kterýž prožral statek tvůj s nevěstkami, přišel, zabils jemu to tele tučné. A on řekl jemu: Synu, ty vždycky se mnou jsi, a všecky věci mé jsou tvé. Ale veseliti a radovati se náleželo. Nebo bratr tvůj tento byl umřel, a zase ožil; zahynul byl, a nalezen jest.

The wisdom of the lowly will lift up his head, And make him to sit in the midst of great men. Commend not a man for his beauty; And abhor not a man for his outward appearance. The bee is little among such as fly; And her fruit is the chief of sweetmeats. Glory not in the putting on of raiment, And exalt not yourself in the day of honor; For the works of the Lord are wonderful, And his works are hidden among men. Many kings have sat down upon the ground; And one that was never thought of has worn a diadem. Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; And men of renown have been delivered into other men’s hands. Blame not before you have examined: Understand first, and then rebuke. Answer not before you have heard; And interrupt not in the midst of speech. Strive not in a matter that concerns you not; And where sinners judge, sit not you with them. My son, be not busy about many matters: For if you meddle much, you will not be unpunished; And if you pursue, you will not overtake; And you will not escape by fleeing. There is one that toileth, and labores, and makes haste, And is so much the more behind. There is one that is sluggish, and has need of help, Lacking in strength, and that abounds in poverty; And the eyes of the Lord looked upon him for good, And he set him up from his low estate, And lifted up his head; And many marveled at him. Good things and evil, life and death, Poverty and riches, are from the Lord. The gift of the Lord remains with the godly, And his good pleasure will prosper forever. There is that waxes rich by his wariness and pinching, And this is the portion of his reward: When he says, I have found rest, And now will I eat of my goods; Yet he knows not what time will pass, And he will leave them to others, and die. Be stedfast in your covenant, and be conversant therein, And wax old in your work. Marvel not at the works of a sinner; But trust the Lord, and abide in your labor: For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord swiftly on the sudden to make a poor man rich. The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly; And in an hour that comes swiftly he makes his blessing to flourish. Say not, What use is there of me? And what from henceforth will my good things be? Say not, I have sufficient, And from henceforth what harm will happen to me? In the day of good things there is a forgetfulness of evil things; And in the day of evil things a man will not remember things that are good. For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord To reward a man in the day of death according to his ways. The affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of delight; And in the last end of a man is the revelation of his deeds. Call no man blessed before his death; And a man will be known in his children. Bring not every man into your house; For many are the plots of the deceitful man. As a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the heart of a proud man; And as one that is a spy, he looks upon your falling. For he lies in wait to turn things that are good into evil; And in things that are praiseworthy he will lay blame. From a spark of fire a heap of many coals is kindled; And a sinful man lies in wait for blood. Take heed of an evil-doer, for he contriveth wicked things; Lest haply he bring upon you blame forever. Receive a stranger into your house, and he will distract you with brawls, And estrange you from your own.

Dále pak, bratří moji, radujte se v Pánu. Jednostejných vám věcí psáti mně se jistě nestýště, vám pak to bezpečné jest. Vizte psy, vizte zlé dělníky, vizte roztržku. Neboť myť jsme obřízka, kteříž duchem sloužíme Bohu, a chlubíme se v Kristu Ježíši, a nedoufáme v těle, Ačkoli i já mohl bych doufati v těle. Zdá-liť se komu jinému, že by mohl doufati v těle, já více, Obřezán jsa osmého dne, jsa z rodu Izraelského, pokolení Beniaminova, Žid z Židů, podlé zákona farizeus, A z strany horlivosti protivník církve, z strany pak spravedlnosti zákonní jsa bez úhony. Ale to, což mi bylo ziskem, položil jsem sobě pro Krista za škodu. Nýbrž i všecky věci pokládám škodou býti pro vyvýšenost známosti Krista Ježíše Pána svého, pro nějž jsem to všecko ztratil, a mám to jako za lejna, abych Krista získal, A v něm nalezen byl nemající své spravedlnosti, kteráž jest z zákona, ale tu, kteráž jest z víry Kristovy, tu spravedlnost, kteráž jest z Boha, a u víře záleží, Abych poznal jej, a moc vzkříšení jeho, i společnost utrpení jeho, připodobňuje se k smrti jeho, Zda bych tak přišel k vzkříšení z mrtvých. Ne že bych již dosáhl, aneb již dokonalým byl, ale snažně běžím, zda bych i uchvátiti mohl, načež uchvácen jsem od Krista Ježíše. Bratří, jáť nemám za to, že bych již dosáhl. Ale to jedno činím, na ty věci, kteréž jsou za mnou, zapomínaje, k těm pak, kteréž jsou přede mnou, úsilně chvátaje, k cíli běžím, k odplatě svrchovaného povolání Božího v Kristu Ježíši. Protož kteřížkoli jsme dokonalí, to smýšlejme. A pakli v čem jinak smyslíte, i toť vám Bůh zjeví. Ale k čemuž jsme již přišli, v tom při jednostejném zůstávejme pravidle, a jednostejně smyslme. Spolunásledovníci moji buďte, bratří, a šetřte těch, kteříž tak chodí, jakož máte příklad na nás. Neboť mnozí chodí, o nichž jsem častokrát pravil vám, a nyní s pláčem pravím, že jsou nepřátelé kříže Kristova, Jichžto konec jest zahynutí, jejichž Bůh jest břicho, a sláva v mrzkostech jejich, kteříž o zemské věci stojí. Ale naše obcování jest v nebesích, odkudž i spasitele očekáváme Pána Jezukrista, Kterýž promění tělo naše ponížené, aby bylo podobné k tělu slávy jeho, podlé mocnosti té, kterouž mocen jest i všecky věci podmaniti sobě.
