The pride of the height is the firmament in its clearness, The appearance of heaven, in the spectacle of its glory. The sun when he appears, bringing tidings as he goes forth, Is a marvelous instrument, the work of the Most High: At his noon he dries up the country, And who shall stand against his burning heat? A man blowing a furnace is in works of heat, But the sun three times more, burning up the mountains: Breathing out fiery vapours, And sending forth bright beams, he dims the eyes. Great is the Lord that made him; And at his word he hastens his course. The moon also is in all things for her season, For a declaration of times, and a sign of the world. From the moon is the sign of the feast day; A light that waneth when she is come to the full. The month is called after her name, Increasing wonderfully in her changing; An instrument of the army on high, Shining forth in the firmament of heaven; The beauty of heaven, the glory of the stars, An ornament giving light in the highest places of the Lord. At the word of the Holy One they will stand in due order, And they will not faint in their watches. Look upon the rainbow, and praise him that made it; Exceeding beautiful in the brightness thereof. It encircles the heaven round about with a circle of glory; The hands of the Most High have stretched it. By his commandment he makes the snow to fall apace, And sends swiftly the lightnings of his judgement. By reason thereof the treasure-houses are opened; And clouds fly forth as fowls. By his mighty power he makes strong the clouds, And the hailstones are broken small: And at his appearing the mountains will be shaken, And at his will the south wind will blow. The voice of his thunder makes the earth to travail; So does the northern storm and the whirlwind: As birds flying down he sprinkleth the snow; And as the lighting of the locust is the falling down thereof: The eye will marvel at the beauty of its whiteness, And the heart will be astonished at the raining of it. The hoar frost also he pours on the earth as salt; And when it is congealed, it is as points of thorns. The cold north wind shall blow, And the ice shall be congealed on the water: It shall lodge upon every gathering together of water, And the water shall put on as it were a breastplate. It shall devour the mountains, and burn up the wilderness, And consume the green herb as fire. A mist coming speedily is the healing of all things; A dew coming after heat shall bring cheerfulness. By his counsel he has stilled the deep, And planted islands therein. They that sail on the sea tell of the danger thereof; And when we hear it with our ears, we marvel. Therein be also those strange and wondrous works, Variety of all that has life, the race of sea-monsters. By reason of him his end has success, And by his word all things consist. We may say many things, yet shall we not attain; And the sum of our words is, He is all. How shall we have strength to glorify him? For he is himself the great one above all his works. The Lord is terrible and exceeding great; And marvelous is his power. When you⌃ glorify the Lord, exalt him as much as you⌃ can; For even yet will he exceed: And when you⌃ exalt him, put forth your full strength: Be not weary; for you⌃ will never attain. Who has seen him, that he may declare him? And who shall magnify him as he is? Many things are hidden greater than these; For we have seen but a few of his works. For the Lord made all things; And to the godly gave he wisdom.

Potom pak chodil Ježíš po Galilei; nebo nechtěl býti v Judstvu, proto že ho hledali Židé zabiti. A byl blízko svátek Židovský, stánků. Tedy řekli jemu bratří jeho: Vyjdi odsud, a jdi do Judstva, ať i učedlníci tvoji vidí skutky tvé, kteréž činíš. Nižádný zajisté v skrytě nic nedělá, kdož chce vidín býti. Protož ty, činíš-li takové věci, zjev se světu. Nebo ani bratří jeho nevěřili v něho. I dí jim Ježíš: Čas můj ještě nepřišel, ale čas váš vždycky jest hotov. Nemůžeť vás svět nenáviděti, ale mneť nenávidí; nebo já svědectví vydávám o něm, že skutkové jeho zlí jsou. Jděte vy k svátku tomuto. Jáť ještě nepůjdu k svátku tomuto, nebo čas můj se ještě nenaplnil. To pak pověděv jim, zůstal v Galilei. A když odešli bratří jeho, tehdy i on šel k svátku, ne zjevně, ale jako ukrytě. Židé pak hledali ho v svátek, a pravili: Kde jest onen? A mnoho řečí bylo o něm v zástupu. Nebo někteří pravili, že dobrý jest, a jiní pravili: Není, ale svodí zástup. Žádný však o něm nemluvil zjevně pro bázeň Židů. Když pak již polovici svátku se vykonalo, vstoupil Ježíš do chrámu, a učil. I divili se Židé, řkouce: Kterak tento písmo umí, neučiv se? Odpověděl jim Ježíš a řekl: Mé učení neníť mé, ale toho, kterýž mne poslal. Bude-li kdo chtíti vůli jeho činiti, tenť bude uměti rozeznati, jest-li to učení z Boha, čili mluvím já sám od sebe. Kdoť sám od sebe mluví, chvály své vlastní hledá, ale kdož hledá chvály toho, kterýž ho poslal, tenť pravdomluvný jest, a nepravosti v něm není. Však Mojžíš dal vám zákon, a žádný z vás neplní zákona. Proč mne hledáte zamordovati? Odpověděl zástup a řekl: Ďábelství máš. Kdo tě hledá zamordovati? Odpověděl Ježíš a řekl jim: Jeden skutek učinil jsem, a všickni se tomu divíte. Však Mojžíš vydal vám obřízku, (ne že by z Mojžíše byla, ale z otců,) a v sobotu obřezujete člověka. Poněvadž člověk obřízku přijímá v sobotu, aby nebyl rušen zákon Mojžíšův, proč se na mne hněváte, že jsem celého člověka uzdravil v sobotu? Nesuďte podlé osoby, ale spravedlivý soud suďte. Tedy někteří z Jeruzalémských pravili: Zdaliž toto není ten, kteréhož hledají zabiti? A aj, svobodně mluví a nic mu neříkají. Zdali již právě poznali knížata, že tento jest právě Kristus? Ale o tomto víme, odkud jest, Kristus pak když přijde, žádný nebude věděti, odkud by byl. I volal Ježíš v chrámě, uče a řka: I mne znáte, i odkud jsem, víte. A nepřišelť jsem sám od sebe, ale jestiť pravdomluvný ten, kterýž mne poslal, jehož vy neznáte. Ale já znám jej, nebo od něho jsem, a on mne poslal. I hledali ho jíti, ale žádný nevztáhl ruky na něho, nebo ještě byla nepřišla hodina jeho. Z zástupu pak mnozí uvěřili v něho, a pravili: Kristus když přijde, zdali více divů činiti bude nad ty, kteréž tento činí? Slyšeli pak farizeové zástup, an o něm takové věci rozmlouvá, i poslali farizeové a přední kněží {biskupové} služebníky, aby jej jali. Tedy řekl jim: Ještě maličký čas jsem s vámi, potom odejdu k tomu, kterýž mne poslal. Hledati mne budete, ale nenaleznete, a kdež já budu, vy nemůžte přijíti. I řekli Židé k sobě vespolek: Kam tento půjde, že my ho nenalezneme? Zdali v rozptýlení pohanů půjde, a bude učiti pohany? Jaká jest to řeč, kterouž promluvil: Hledati mne budete, ale nenaleznete, a kdež já budu, vy nemůžete přijíti? V poslední pak den ten veliký svátku toho, stál Ježíš a volal, řka: Žízní-li kdo, poď ke mně, a napí se. Kdož věří ve mne, jakož dí písmo, řeky z břicha jeho poplynou vody živé. (A to řekl o Duchu, kteréhož měli přijíti věřící v něho; nebo ještě nebyl dán Duch svatý, proto že ještě Ježíš nebyl oslaven.) Tedy mnozí z zástupu uslyševše tu řeč, pravili: Tentoť jest právě prorok ten. Jiní pravili: Tentoť jest Kristus. Ale někteří pravili: Zdaliž z Galilee přijde Kristus? Zdaž nepraví písmo, že z semene Davidova a z Betléma městečka, kdež býval David, přijíti má Kristus? A tak různice v zástupu stala se pro něj. Někteří pak z nich chtěli ho jíti, ale žádný nevztáhl ruky na něj. Tedy přišli služebníci k předním kněžím {biskupům} a k farizeům, kteříž řekli jim: Proč jste ho nepřivedli? Odpověděli ti služebníci: Nikdy tak člověk nemluvil, jako tento člověk. I odpověděli jim farizeové: Zdali i vy jste svedeni? Zdaliž kdo z knížat uvěřil v něho aneb z farizeů? Než zástup ten, kterýž nezná zákona. Zlořečeníť jsou. I dí jim Nikodém, ten kterýž byl přišel k němu v noci, byv jeden z nich: Zdali zákon náš soudí člověka, leč prvé uslyší od něho a zví, co by činil? Odpověděli a řekli jemu: Nejsi-li i ty Galilejský? Ptej se a viz, žeť prorok z Galilee nepovstal. I šel jeden každý do domu svého.

Let us now praise famous men, And our fathers that became the father of us. The Lord manifested in them great glory, Even his mighty power from the beginning. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, And were men renowned for their power, Giving counsel by their understanding, Such as have brought tidings in prophecies: Leaders of the people by their counsels, And by their understanding men of learning for the people; Wise were their words in their instruction: Such as sought out musical tunes, And set forth verses in writing: Rich men furnished with ability, Living peaceably in their habitations: All these were honored in their generations, And were a glory in their days. There be of them, that have left a name behind them, To declare their praises. And some there be, which have no memorial; Who are perished as though they had not been, And are become as though they had not been born; And their children after them. But these were men of mercy, Whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. With their seed shall remain continually a good inheritance; Their children are within the covenants. Their seed stands fast, And their children for their sakes. Their seed shall remain forever, And their glory shall not be blotted out. Their bodies were buried in peace, And their name lives to all generations. Peoples will declare their wisdom, And the congregation tells out their praise. Enoch pleased the Lord, and was translated, Being an example of repentance to all generations. Noah was found perfect and righteous; In the season of wrath he was taken in exchange for the world; Therefore was there left a remnant to the earth, When the flood came. Everlasting covenants were made with him, That all flesh should no more be blotted out by a flood. Abraham was a great father of a multitude of nations; And there was none found like him in glory; Who kept the law of the Most High, And was taken into covenant with him: In his flesh he established the covenant; And when he was proved, he was found faithful. Therefore he assured him by an oath, That the nations should be blessed in his seed; That he would multiply him as the dust of the earth, And exalt his seed as the stars, And cause them to inherit from sea to sea, And from the River to the utmost part of the earth. In Isaac also did he establish likewise, for Abraham his father’s sake, The blessing of all men, and the covenant: And he made it rest upon the head of Jacob; He acknowledged him in his blessings, And gave to him by inheritance, And divided his portions; Among twelve tribes did he part them.

Večerní modlitba — druhé čtení

1. Timoteovi 4

Duch pak světle praví, že v posledních časích odvrátí se někteří od víry, poslouchajíce duchů bludných a učení ďábelských, V pokrytství lež mluvících, a cejchované majících svědomí své, Zbraňujících ženiti se, přikazujících zdržovati se od pokrmů, kteréž Bůh stvořil k užívání s díkčiněním věřícím a těm, kteříž poznali pravdu. Nebo všeliké stvoření Boží dobré jest, a nic nemá zamítáno býti, což se s díků činěním přijímá. Posvěcuje se zajisté skrze slovo Boží a modlitbu. Toto předkládaje bratřím, budeš dobrý služebník Jezukristův, vykrmený slovy víry a pravého učení, kteréhož jsi následoval. Světské pak a babské básně zavrz, ale cvič se v pobožnosti. Nebo tělesné cvičení malého jest užitku, ale pobožnost ke všemu jest užitečná, a má i nynějšího i budoucího života zaslíbení. Věrnáť jest tato řeč, a hodná, aby všelijak oblíbena byla. Proto zajisté i pracujeme, i pohanění neseme, že naději máme v Bohu živém, kterýž jest ochránce všech lidí, a zvláště věřících. Ty věci předkládej, a uč. Nižádný mladostí tvou nepohrdej, ale buď příkladem věrných v řeči, v obcování, v lásce, v duchu, u víře, v čistotě. Dokudž nepřijdu, buď pilen čítání, napomínání, učení. Nezanedbávej daru, kterýž jest v tobě, jenžť jest dán skrze proroctví s vzkládáním rukou starších. O tom přemyšluj, v tom buď, aby prospěch tvůj zjevný byl všechněm. Budiž sebe pilen i učení, v tom trvej; nebo to čině, i samého sebe spasíš, i ty, kteříž tebe poslouchají.
