Men med Jesu Kristi Fødsel gik det saaledes til. Da Maria, hans Moder, var trolovet med Josef, fandtes hun, førend de kom sammen, at være frugtsommelig af den Helligaand. Men da Josef, hendes Mand, var retfærdig og ikke vilde beskæmme hende offentligt, besluttede han hemmeligt at skille sig fra hende. Men idet han tænkte derpaa, se, da viste en Herrens Engel sig for ham i en Drøm og sagde: „Josef, Davids Søn! frygt ikke for at tage din Hustru Maria til dig; thi det, som er avlet i hende, er af den Helligaand. Og hun skal føde en Søn, og du skal kalde hans Navn Jesus; thi han skal frelse sit Folk fra deres Synder.‟
