And instead of a friend become not an enemy; For an evil name will inherit shame and reproach: Even so will the sinner that has a double tongue. Exalt not yourself in the counsel of your soul; That your soul be not torn in pieces as a bull: You will eat up your leaves, and destroy your fruits, And leave yourself as a dry tree. A wicked soul will destroy him that has gotten it, And will make him a laughing stock to his enemies. Sweet words will multiply a man’s friends; And a fair-speaking tongue will multiply courtesies. Let those that are at peace with you be many; But your counselors one of a thousand. If you would get you a friend, get him by proving, And be not in haste to trust him. For there is a friend that is so for his own occasion; And he will not continue in the day of your affliction. And there is a friend that turns to enmity; And he will discover strife to your reproach. And there is a friend that is a companion at the table; And he will not continue in the day of your affliction. And in your prosperity he will be as yourself, And will be bold over your servants: If you shall be brought low, he will be against you, And will hide himself from your face. Separate yourself from your enemies; And beware of your friends. A faithful friend is a strong defence; And he that has found him has found a treasure. There is nothing that can be taken in exchange for a faithful friend; And his excellency is beyond price. A faithful friend is a medicine of life; And those who fear the Lord will find him. He that fears the Lord directs his friendship aright; For as he is, so is his neighbor also. My son, gather instruction from your youth up: And even to hoar hairs you will find wisdom. Come to her as one that plows and sows, And wait for her good fruits; For your toil will be little in the tillage of her, And you will eat of her fruits right soon. How exceeding harsh is she to the unlearned! And he that is without understanding will not abide in her. As a mighty stone of trial will she rest upon him; And he will not delay to cast her from him. For wisdom is according to her name; and she is not manifest to many. Give ear, my son, and accept my judgement, And refuse not my counsel, And bring your feet into her fetters, And your neck into her chain. Put your shoulder under her, and bear her, And be not grieved with her bonds. Come to her with all your soul, And keep her ways with your whole power. Search, and seek, and she will be made known to you; And when you have got hold of her, let her not go. For at the last you will find her rest; And she will be turned for you into gladness. And her fetters will be to you for a covering of strength, And her chains for a robe of glory. For there is a golden ornament upon her, And her bands are a riband of blue. You shall put her on as a robe of glory, And shall array you with her as a crown of rejoicing. My son, if you will, you shall be instructed; And if you will yield your soul, you will be prudent. If you love to hear, you will receive; And if you incline your ear, you will be wise. Stand you in the multitude of the elders; And whoso is wise, cleave you to him. Be willing to listen to every godly discourse; And don’t let the proverbs of understanding escape you. If you see a man of understanding, get you betimes to him, And let your foot wear out the steps of his doors. Let your mind dwell upon the ordinances of the Lord, And meditate continually in his commandments: He will establish your heart, And your desire of wisdom will be given to you.

Lucas 12

En esto habiéndose juntado millares de gentes, de modo que unos a otros se hollaban, comenzó a decir a sus discípulos: Primeramente guardáos de la levadura de los Fariseos, que es hipocresía. Porque nada hay encubierto, que no haya de ser descubierto; ni oculto, que no haya de ser sabido. Por tanto las cosas que dijisteis en tinieblas, en luz serán oídas; y lo que hablasteis al oído en las cámaras, será pregonado desde los tejados. Mas os digo, amigos míos: No tengáis temor de los que matan el cuerpo, y después no tienen más que hagan; Mas yo os enseñaré a quien temáis: Teméd a aquel que después que hubiere muerto, tiene potestad de echar en el infierno: de cierto os digo: A éste teméd. ¿No se venden cinco pajarillos por dos blancas, y ni uno de ellos está olvidado delante de Dios? Y aun los cabellos de vuestra cabeza, todos están contados. No temáis pues: de más estima sois vosotros que muchos pajarillos. Pero os digo que todo aquel que me confesare delante de los hombres, también el Hijo del hombre le confesará delante de los ángeles de Dios. Mas el que me negare delante de los hombres, será negado delante de los ángeles de Dios. Y todo aquel que dice palabra contra el Hijo del hombre, le será perdonado; mas al que blasfemare contra el Espíritu Santo, no le será perdonado. Y cuando os trajeren a las sinagogas, y a los magistrados y potestades, no estéis solícitos como, o qué hayáis de responder, o qué hayáis de decir. Porque el Espíritu Santo os enseñará en la misma hora lo que será menester decir. ¶ Y le dijo uno de la compañía: Maestro, di a mi hermano que parta conmigo la herencia. Mas él le dijo: Hombre, ¿quién me puso por juez, o partidor sobre vosotros? Y les dijo: Mirád, y guardáos de avaricia; porque la vida del hombre no consiste en la abundancia de los bienes que posee. Y les dijo una parábola, diciendo: La heredad de un hombre rico había llevado muchos frutos; Y él pensaba dentro de sí, diciendo: ¿Qué haré, que no tengo donde junte mis frutos? Y dijo: Esto haré: derribaré mis alfolíes, y los edificaré mayores; y allí juntaré todos mis frutos y mis bienes; Y diré a mi alma: Alma, muchos bienes tienes en depósito para muchos años: repósate, come, bebe, huélgate. Y díjole Dios: ¡Insensato! esta noche vuelven a pedir tu alma; ¿y lo que has aparejado, cuyo será? Así es el que hace para sí tesoro, y no es rico para con Dios. Y dijo a sus discípulos: Por tanto os digo: No estéis solícitos de vuestra vida, qué comeréis; ni del cuerpo, qué vestiréis. La vida más es que la comida; y el cuerpo, que el vestido. Considerád los cuervos, que ni siembran, ni siegan: que ni tienen almacén, ni alfolí; y Dios los alimenta. ¿Cuánto de más estima sois vosotros que las aves? ¿Quién de vosotros podrá con su solicitud añadir a su estatura un codo? Pues si no podéis aun lo que es menos, ¿para qué estaréis solícitos de lo de más? Considerád los lirios, como crecen: no labran, ni hilan; y os digo, que ni Salomón con toda su gloria se vistió como uno de ellos. Y si así viste Dios a la yerba, que hoy está en el campo, y mañana es echada en el horno, ¿cuánto más a vosotros, hombres de poca fe? Vosotros, pues, no procuréis qué hayáis de comer, o qué hayáis de beber, y no seáis de ánimo dudoso; Porque todas estas cosas las gentes del mundo las buscan; que vuestro Padre sabe que habéis menester estas cosas. Mas procurád el reino de Dios, y todas estas cosas os serán añadidas. No temáis, oh manada pequeña, porque al Padre ha placido daros el reino. Vendéd lo que poseéis, y dad limosna: hacéos bolsas que no se envejecen, tesoro en los cielos que nunca falte: donde ladrón no llega, ni polilla corrompe. Porque donde está vuestro tesoro, allí también estará vuestro corazón. ¶ Estén ceñidos vuestros lomos, y vuestras luces encendidas; Y vosotros, semejantes a hombres que esperan cuando su señor ha de volver de las bodas; para que cuando viniere y tocare, luego le abran. Bienaventurados aquellos siervos, los cuales, cuando el señor viniere, hallare velando: de cierto os digo, que él se ceñirá, y hará que se sienten a la mesa, y saliendo les servirá. Y aunque venga a la segunda vela, y aunque venga a la tercera vela, y los hallare así, bienaventurados son los tales siervos. Esto empero sabéd, que si supiese el padre de familias a qué hora había de venir el ladrón, velaría ciertamente, y no dejaría minar su casa. Vosotros, pues, también estád apercibidos; porque a la hora que no pensáis, el Hijo del hombre vendrá. Entonces Pedro le dijo: Señor, ¿dices esta parábola a nosotros, o también a todos? Y dijo el Señor: ¿Quién es el mayordomo fiel y prudente, al cual el señor pondrá sobre su familia, para que en tiempo les dé su ración? Bienaventurado aquel siervo, al cual, cuando el señor viniere, hallare haciendo así. En verdad os digo, que él le pondrá sobre todos sus bienes. Mas si el tal siervo dijere en su corazón: Mi señor se tarda de venir, y comenzare a herir los siervos y las criadas, y a comer, y a beber, y a borrachear, Vendrá el señor de aquel siervo el día que él no espera, y a la hora que él no sabe; y le apartará, y pondrá su suerte con los infieles. Porque el siervo que entendió la voluntad de su señor, y no se apercibió, ni hizo conforme a su voluntad, será azotado mucho. Mas el que no entendió, e hizo por qué ser azotado, será azotado poco, porque a cualquiera que fue dado mucho, mucho será vuelto a demandar de él; y al que encomendaron mucho, más será de él pedido. ¶ Fuego vine a meter en la tierra, ¿y qué quiero, si ya está encendido? Empero, de bautismo me es necesario ser bautizado, ¡y cómo me angustio hasta que sea cumplido! ¿Pensáis que he venido a la tierra a dar paz? No, os digo; mas disensión. Porque estarán de aquí adelante cinco en una casa divididos, tres contra dos, y dos contra tres. El padre estará dividido contra el hijo, y el hijo contra el padre: la madre contra la hija, y la hija contra la madre: la suegra contra su nuera, y la nuera contra su suegra. Y decía también al pueblo: Cuando veis la nube que sale del poniente, luego decís: Agua viene; y es así. Y cuando sopla el austro, decís: Habrá calor; y lo hay. ¡Hipócritas! Sabéis examinar la faz del cielo y de la tierra, ¿y este tiempo, como no lo examináis? ¿Mas por qué aun de vosotros mismos no juzgáis lo que es justo? Pues cuando vas al magistrado con tu adversario, procura en el camino de librarte de él, porque no te traiga al juez, y el juez te entregue al alguacil, y el alguacil te meta en la cárcel. Te digo que no saldrás de allá hasta que hayas pagado hasta el postrer cornado.

Do no evil, so will no evil overtake you. Depart from wrong, and it will turn away from you. My son, sow not upon the furrows of unrighteousness, And you shall not reap them sevenfold. Seek not of the Lord preeminence, Neither of the king the seat of honor. Justify not yourself in the presence of the Lord; And display not your wisdom before the king. Seek not to be a judge, Lest you be not able to take away iniquities; Lest haply you fear the person of a mighty man, And lay a stumbling block in the way of your uprightness. Sin not against the multitude of the city, And cast not yourself down in the crowd. Bind not up sin twice; For in one sin you will not be unpunished. Say not, He will look upon the multitude of my gifts, And when I offer to the Most High God, he will accept it. Be not faint-hearted in your prayer; And neglect not to give alms. Laugh not a man to scorn when he is in the bitterness of his soul; For there is one who humbles and exalts. Devise not a lie against your brother; Neither do the like to a friend. Love not to make any manner of lie; For the custom thereof is not for good. Prate not in the multitude of elders; And repeat not your words in your prayer. Hate not laborious work; Neither husbandry, which the Most High has ordained. Number not yourself among the multitude of sinners: Remember that wrath will not wait. Humble your soul greatly; For the punishment of the ungodly man is fire and the worm. Change not a friend for a thing indifferent; Neither a true brother for the gold of Ophir. Forgo not a wise and good wife; For her grace is above gold. Entreat not evil a servant that works truly, Nor a hireling that gives you his life. Let your soul love a wise servant; Defraud him not of liberty. Hast you cattle? have an eye to them; And if they are profitable to you, let them stay by you. Hast you children? correct them, And bow down their neck from their youth. Hast you daughters? give heed to their body, And make not your face cheerful toward them. Give your daughter in marriage, and you will have accomplished a great matter: And give her to a man of understanding. Hast you a wife after your mind? cast her not out: But trust not yourself to one that is hateful. Give glory to your father with your whole heart; And forget not the pangs of your mother. Remember that of them you were born: And what will you recompense them for the things that they have done for you? Fear the Lord with all your soul; And reverence his priests. With all your strength love him that made you; And forsake not his ministers. Fear the Lord, and glorify the priest; And give him his portion, even as it is commanded you; The first fruits, and the trespass offering, and the gift of the shoulders, And the sacrifice of sanctification, and the first fruits of holy things. Also to the poor man stretch out your hand, That your blessing may be perfected. A gift has grace in the sight of every man living; And for a dead man keep not back grace. Be not lacking to those who weep; And mourn with those who mourn. Be not slow to visit a sick man; For by such things you will gain love. In all your matters remember your last end, And you will never do amiss.

Oración vespertina — segunda lectura

Efesios 6

Hijos, obedecéd a vuestros padres en el Señor; que esto es justo. Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, (que es el primer mandamiento con promesa,) Para que te vaya bien, y seas de larga vida sobre la tierra. Y vosotros, padres, no provoquéis a ira a vuestros hijos; sino criádlos en la disciplina y amonestación del Señor. Siervos, obedecéd a los que son vuestros señores según la carne con temor y temblor, en la integridad de vuestro corazón, como a Cristo: No sirviendo al ojo, como los que agradan a los hombres; sino como siervos de Cristo, haciendo de ánimo la voluntad de Dios: Sirviendo con buena voluntad, como quien sirve al Señor, y no solo a los hombres: Sabiendo que el bien que cada uno hiciere, eso mismo recibirá del Señor, ya sea siervo, o ya sea libre. Y vosotros, señores, hacédles a ellos lo mismo, dejando las amenazas: sabiendo que el Señor de ellos y el vuestro está en los cielos; y no hay respeto de personas para con él. ¶ En fin, hermanos míos, sed fuertes en el Señor, y en el poder de su fortaleza. Vestíos de toda la armadura de Dios, para que podáis estar firmes contra las asechanzas del diablo. Porque no solamente tenemos lucha con sangre y carne; sino con principados, con potestades, con los gobernadores de las tinieblas de este siglo, con malicias espirituales en lugares altos. Por tanto tomád toda la armadura de Dios, para que podáis resistir en el día malo, y superado todo, estar en pie. Estád pues firmes, ceñidos los lomos de verdad; y vestidos de coraza de justicia; Y calzados los pies con la preparación del evangelio de paz: Sobre todo, tomando el escudo de la fe, con el cual podréis apagar todos los dardos encendidos del maligno. Y el yelmo de salud tomád, y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios: Orando en todo tiempo con toda oración y ruego en el Espíritu, y velando para ello con toda instancia y suplicación por todos los santos; Y por mí, que me sea dada palabra con abrimiento de mi boca con confianza, para hacer notorio el misterio del evangelio: Por el cual soy embajador en cadenas: para que en ellas hable osadamente, como debo hablar. ¶ Mas porque también vosotros sepáis mis negocios, y lo que yo hago, todo os lo hará saber Tíquico, hermano amado, y fiel ministro en el Señor: El cual os he enviado para esto mismo, para que entendáis lo que pasa entre nosotros, y para que consuele vuestros corazones. Paz sea a los hermanos, y amor con fe de Dios Padre, y del Señor Jesu Cristo. Gracia sea con todos los que aman a nuestro Señor Jesu Cristo en incorrupción.
