Sirach 39

Not so he that has applied his soul, And meditateth in the law of the Most High; He will seek out the wisdom of all the ancients, And will be occupied in prophecies. He will keep the discourse of the men of renown, And will enter in amidst the subtleties of parables. He will seek out the hidden meaning of proverbs, And be conversant in the dark sayings of parables. He will serve among great men, And appear before him that rules: He will travel through the land of strange nations; For he has tried good things and evil among men. He will apply his heart to resort early to the Lord that made him, And will make supplication before the Most High, And will open his mouth in prayer, And will make supplication for his sins. If the great Lord will, He shall be filled with the spirit of understanding: He shall pour forth the words of his wisdom, And in prayer give thanks to the Lord. He shall direct his counsel and knowledge, And in his secrets shall he meditate. He shall show forth the instruction which he has been taught, And shall glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord. Many shall commend his understanding; And so long as the world endures, it shall not be blotted out: His memorial shall not depart, And his name shall live from generation to generation. Nations shall declare his wisdom, And the congregation shall tell out his praise. If he continue, he shall leave a greater name than a thousand: And if he die, he adds thereto. Yet more will I utter, which I have thought upon; And I am filled as the moon at the full. Hearken to me, you⌃ holy children, And bud forth as a rose growing by a brook of water: And give you⌃ a sweet savor as frankencense, And put forth flowers as a lily, Spread abroad a sweet smell, and sing a song of praise; Bless you⌃ the Lord for all his works. Magnify his name, And give utterance to his praise With the songs of your lips, and with harps; And thus shall you⌃ say when you⌃ utter his praise: All the works of the Lord are exceeding good, And every command shall be accomplished in his season. None can say, What is this? wherefore is that? For in his season they shall all be sought out. At his word the waters stood as a heap, And the receptacles of waters at the word of his mouth. At his command is all his good pleasure done; And there is none that shall hinder his salvation. The works of all flesh are before him; And it is not possible to be hid from his eyes. He sees from everlasting to everlasting; And there is nothing wonderful before him. None can say, What is this? wherefore is that? For all things are created for their uses. His blessing covered the dry land as a river, And saturated it as a flood. As he has turned the waters into saltness; So shall the heathen inherit his wrath. His ways are plain to the holy; So are they stumbling blocks to the wicked. Good things are created from the beginning for the good; So are evil things for sinners. The chief of all things necessary for the life of man Are water, and fire, and iron, and salt, And flour of wheat, and honey, and milk, The blood of the grape, and oil, and clothing. All these things are for good to the godly; So to the sinners they shall be turned into evil. There be winds that are created for vengeance, And in their fury lay on their scourges heavily; In the time of consummation they pour out their strength, And shall appease the wrath of him that made them. Fire, and hail, and famine, and death, All these are created for vengeance; Teeth of wild beasts, and scorpions and adders, And a sword punishing the ungodly to destruction. They shall rejoice in his commandment, And shall be made ready upon earth, when need is; And in their seasons they shall not transgress his word. Therefore from the beginning I was resolved, And I thought this, and left it in writing; All the works of the Lord are good: And he will supply every need in its season. And none can say, This is worse than that: For they shall all be well approved in their season. And now with all your heart and mouth sing you⌃ praises, And bless the name of the Lord.

Oración matutina — segunda lectura

Juan 5

Después de estas cosas, había una fiesta de los Judíos, y subió Jesús a Jerusalem. Y hay en Jerusalem junto a la puerta del ganado un estanque, que en lengua Hebrea es llamado Betesda, el cual tiene cinco pórticos. En estos estaba echada una grande multitud de enfermos, ciegos, cojos, secos, que estaban esperando el movimiento del agua; Porque un ángel descendía a cierto tiempo al estanque, y revolvía el agua; y el que primero entraba en el estanque, después del movimiento del agua, quedaba sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviese. ¶ Y estaba allí un hombre, que había treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo. Como Jesús le vio echado, y entendió que ya había mucho tiempo que estaba enfermo, dícele: ¿Quiéres ser sano? Y el enfermo le respondió: Señor, no tengo hombre, que cuando el agua fuere revuelta, me meta en el estanque; porque entre tanto que yo voy, otro antes de mí ha descendido. Dícele Jesús: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y anda. Y luego aquel hombre fue sano, y tomó su lecho, e íbase; y era sábado aquel día. Entonces los Judíos decían a aquel que había sido sanado: Sábado es, no te es lícito llevar tu lecho. Respondióles: El que me sanó, el mismo me dijo: Toma tu lecho, y anda. Y le preguntaron entonces: ¿Quién es el que te dijo: Toma tu lecho, y anda? Y el que había sido sanado, no sabía quien fuese; porque Jesús se había apartado de la multitud que estaba en aquel lugar. Después le halló Jesús en el templo, y le dijo: He aquí, ya estás sano: no peques más, porque no te venga alguna cosa peor. El hombre se fue entonces, y dio aviso a los Judíos, que Jesús era el que le había sanado. ¶ Y por esta causa los Judíos perseguían a Jesús, y procuraban matarle, porque hacía estas cosas en sábado. Y Jesús les respondió: Mi Padre hasta ahora obra, y yo obro. Entonces por tanto más procuraban los Judíos matarle; porque no solo quebrantaba el sábado, mas aun también decía que era Dios su Padre, haciéndose igual a Dios. Respondió pues Jesús, y les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Que no puede el Hijo hacer algo de sí mismo, sino lo que viere hacer al Padre; porque todo lo que él hace, esto también hace el Hijo juntamente. Porque el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todas las cosas que él hace; y mayores obras que estas le mostrará, de modo que vosotros os maravilléis. Porque como el Padre levanta los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo a los que quiere da vida. Porque el Padre a nadie juzga, mas todo el juicio dio al Hijo; Para que todos honren al Hijo, como honran al Padre: el que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que le envió. De cierto, de cierto os digo: Que el que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no vendrá en condenación, mas pasó de muerte a vida. De cierto, de cierto os digo: Que vendrá hora, y ahora es, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios; y los que oyeren, vivirán. Porque como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así dio también al Hijo que tuviese vida en sí mismo. Y también le dio poder de hacer juicio, porque es el Hijo del hombre. No os maravilléis de esto; porque vendrá hora, cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz; Y los que hicieron bien, saldrán a resurrección de vida; y los que hicieron mal, a resurrección de condenación. No puedo yo de mí mismo hacer algo: como oigo, juzgo; y mi juicio es justo, porque no busco mi voluntad, mas la voluntad del Padre que me envió. ¶ Si yo doy testimonio de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero. Otro es el que da testimonio de mí; y yo sé que el testimonio que él da de mí, es verdadero. Vosotros enviasteis a Juan, y él dio testimonio a la verdad. Empero yo no tomo el testimonio de hombre: mas digo estas cosas, para que vosotros seáis salvos. El era antorcha que ardía, y alumbraba; y vosotros quisisteis regocijaros por un poco en su luz. Mas yo tengo mayor testimonio que el de Juan; porque las obras que el Padre me dio que cumpliese, es a saber, las mismas obras que yo hago, dan testimonio de mí, que el Padre me haya enviado. Y el Padre mismo que me envió, él dio testimonio de mí. Vosotros nunca habéis oído su voz, ni habéis visto su parecer. Ni tenéis su palabra permanente en vosotros; porque al que él envió, a éste vosotros no creéis. Escudriñád las Escrituras; porque a vosotros os parece, que en ellas tenéis la vida eterna; y ellas son las que dan testimonio de mí; Y no queréis venir a mí, para que tengáis vida. Gloria de los hombres no recibo. Mas yo os conozco, que no tenéis el amor de Dios en vosotros. Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y no me recibís: si otro viniere en su proprio nombre, a aquel recibiréis. ¿Cómo podéis vosotros creer, los que tomáis gloria los unos de los otros? y no buscáis la gloria que de solo Dios viene. No pensáis que yo os tengo de acusar delante del Padre: hay quien os acusa, es a saber, Moisés, en quien vosotros esperáis. Porque si vosotros creyeseis a Moisés, creeríais a mí; porque de mí escribió él. Y si a sus escritos no creeis, ¿cómo creeréis a mis palabras?

Great travail is created for every man, And a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, From the day of their coming forth from their mother’s womb, Until the day for their burial in the mother of all things. The expectation of things to come, and the day of death, Trouble their thoughts, and cause fear of heart; From him that sits on a throne of glory, Even to him that is humbled in earth and ashes; From him that wears purple and a crown, Even to him that is clothed with a hempen frock. There is wrath, and jealousy, and trouble, and disquiet, And fear of death, and anger, and strife; And in the time of rest upon his bed His night sleep does change his knowledge. A little or nothing is his resting, And afterward in his sleep, as in a day of keeping watch, He is troubled in the vision of his heart, As one that has escaped from the front of battle. In the very time of his deliverance he awakens, And marvels that the fear is nothing. It is thus with all flesh, from man to beast, And upon sinners sevenfold more. Death, and bloodshed, and strife, and sword, Calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge; All these things were created for the wicked, And because of them came the flood. All things that are of the earth turn to the earth again: And all things that are of the waters return into the sea. All bribery and injustice shall be blotted out; And good faith shall stand forever. The goods of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, And like a great thunder in rain shall go off in noise. In opening his hands a man shall be made glad: So shall transgressors utterly fail. The children of the ungodly shall not put forth many branches; And are as unclean roots upon a sheer rock. The sedge that grows upon every water and bank of a river Shall be plucked up before all grass. Bounty is as a garden of blessings, And almsgiving endures forever. The life of one that labores, and is contented, shall be made sweet; And he that finds a treasure is above both. Children and the building of a city establish a man’s name; And a blameless wife is counted above both. Wine and music rejoice the heart; And the love of wisdom is above both. The pipe and the lute make pleasant melody; And a pleasant tongue is above both. Your eye shall desire grace and beauty; And above both the green blade of corn. A friend and a companion never meet amiss; And a wife with her husband is above both. Brethren and succour are for a time of affliction; And almsgiving is a deliverer above both. Gold and silver will make the foot stand sure; And counsel is esteemed above them both. Riches and strength will lift up the heart; And the fear of the Lord is above both: There is nothing lacking in the fear of the Lord, And there is no need to seek help therein. The fear of the Lord is as a garden of blessing, And covers a man above all glory. My son, lead not a beggar’s life; Better it is to die than to beg. A man that looks to the table of another, His life is not to be counted for a life; He will pollute his soul with another man’s meats: But a man wise and well-instructed will beware thereof. In the mouth of the shameless begging will be sweet; And in his belly a fire shall be kindled.

1 Timoteo 1

Pablo, apóstol de Jesu Cristo por la ordenación de Dios Salvador nuestro, y del Señor Jesu Cristo, esperanza nuestra; A Timoteo, verdadero hijo mío en la fe: Gracia, misericordia, y paz de Dios nuestro Padre, y de Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor. Como te rogué, que te quedases en Efeso, cuando me partí para Macedonia, para que denunciases a algunos que no enseñen diversa doctrina: Ni escuchen a fábulas y genealogías interminables, que dan cuestiones más bien que edificación de Dios, que es en la fe: así házlo. Pues el fin del mandamiento es el amor nacido de corazón limpio, y de buena conciencia, y de fe no fingida: De lo cual apartándose algunos, se han desviado, dándose a discursos vanos: Queriendo ser doctores de la ley, y no entendiendo ni lo que hablan, ni lo que afirman. Mas sabemos que la ley es buena, si se usa de ella legítimamente: Sabiendo que la ley no es puesta para el justo, sino para los injustos, y para los desobedientes, para los impíos y pecadores, para los malos y contaminados, para los matadores de padres y de madres, para los homicidas, Para los fornicarios, para los que se contaminan con varones, para los ladrones de hombres, para los mentirosos y perjuros; y si hay alguna otra cosa contraria a la sana doctrina, Conforme al evangelio glorioso del Dios bienaventurado, el cual a mí me ha sido encargado. ¶ Gracias doy al que me fortificó, a Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro, de que me tuvo por fiel, poniéndome en el ministerio: Habiendo yo sido antes blasfemo, y perseguidor, e injuriador; mas fui recibido a misericordia, porque lo hice con ignorancia en incredulidad. Mas la gracia del Señor nuestro superabundó con la fe y amor que es en Cristo Jesús. Palabra fiel es esta, y digna de ser recibida de todos: que Cristo Jesús vino al mundo para salvar los pecadores, de los cuales yo soy el primero. Mas por esto fui recibido a misericordia, es a saber, para que Jesu Cristo mostrase en mí el primero toda su clemencia, para ejemplo de los que habían de creer en él para vida eterna. Al Rey de siglos, inmortal, invisible, al solo sabio Dios, sea honor y gloria por siglos de los siglos. Amén. ¶ Este mandamiento, hijo Timoteo, te encargo, para que conforme a las profecías pasadas de ti, milites por ellas buena milicia: Reteniendo la fe y una buena conciencia, la cual echando de sí algunos hicieron naufragio en la fe. De los cuales son Himeneo y Alejandro, que yo entregué a Satanás para que aprendan a no blasfemar.
