When those who were in the tents heard, they were amazed at what happened. Trembling and fear fell upon them, and no man dared stay any more in the sight of his neighbor, but rushing out with one accord, they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill country. Those who had encamped in the hill country round about Bethulia fled away. And then the children of Israel, every one who was a warrior among them, rushed out upon them. Ozias sent to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Chobai, and Chola, and to every coast of Israel, to tell about the things that had been accomplished, and that all should rush upon their enemies to destroy them. But wnen the children of Israel heard, they all fell upon them with one accord, and struck them to Chobai. Yes, and in like manner also they of Jerusalem and of all the hill country came (for men had told them about what happened in their enemies’ camp), and those who were in Gilead and in Galilee fell upon their flank with a great slaughter, until they were past Damascus and its borders. The rest of the people who lived at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Asshur, and plundered them, and were enriched exceedingly. The children of Israel returned from the slaughter, and got possession of that which remained. The villages and the cities that were in the hill country and in the plain country, took many spoils; for there was an exceedingly great supply. Joakim the high priest, and the elders of the children of Israel whe lived in Jerusalem, came to see the good things which the Lord had showed to Israel, and to see Judith, and to salute her. When they came to her, they all blessed her with one accord, and said to her, “You are the exaltation of Jerusalem! You are the great glory of Israel! You are the great rejoicing of our race! You have done all these things by your hand. You have done with Israel the things that are good, and God is pleased with it. Blessed be you with the Almighty Lord for evermore.” And all the people said, “Amen!” And the people plundered the camp for the space of thirty days: and they gave Holofernes’ tent to Judith, along with all his silver cups, his beds, his bowls, and all his furniture. She took them, and placed them on her mule, and prepared her wagons, and heaped them on it. And all the women of Israel ran together to see her; and they blessed her, and made a dance among them for her. She took branches in her hand, and distributed them to the women who were with her. The they made themselves garlands of olive, she and those who were with her, and she went before all the people in the dance, leading all the women. All the men of Israel followed in their armor with garlands, and with songs in their mouths.

Marcos 15

Y luego por la mañana, hecho consejo, los sumos sacerdotes con los ancianos, y con los escribas, y con todo el concilio, trajeron a Jesús atado, y le entregaron a Pilato. Y le preguntó Pilato: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los Judíos? Y respondiendo él, le dijo: Tú lo dices. Y le acusaban los príncipes de los sacerdotes de muchas cosas: mas él no respondió nada. Y le preguntó otra vez Pilato, diciendo: ¿No respondes algo? Mira cuán muchas cosas atestiguan contra ti. Mas Jesús ni aun con eso respondió, de manera que Pilato se maravillaba. Empero en el día de la fiesta les soltaba un preso, cualquiera que pidiesen. Y había uno que se llamaba Barrabás, preso con sus compañeros de la revuelta, que en una revuelta habían hecho una muerte. Y la multitud, dando voces, comenzó a pedir que les hiciese como siempre les había hecho. Y Pilato les respondió, diciendo: ¿Queréis que os suelte al Rey de los Judíos? Porque conocía que por envidia le habían entregado los príncipes de los sacerdotes. Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes incitaron a la multitud, que les soltase antes a Barrabás. Y respondiendo Pilato, les dice otra vez: ¿Qué pues queréis que haga de él que llamáis Rey de los Judíos? Y ellos volvieron a dar voces: Crucifícale. Mas Pilato les decía: ¿Pues, qué mal ha hecho? Y ellos daban mayores voces: Crucifícale. Y Pilato, queriendo satisfacer al pueblo, les soltó a Barrabás, y entregó a Jesús, azotado, para que fuese crucificado. Entonces los soldados le llevaron dentro de la sala, es a saber, a la audiencia; y convocan toda la cuadrilla, Y le visten de púrpura, y le ponen una corona tejida de espinas; Y comenzaron a saludarle, y decir: Tengas gozo, Rey de los Judíos. Y le herían su cabeza con una caña, y escupían en él, y le hacían reverencia hincadas las rodillas. Y después que le hubieron escarnecido, le desnudaron de la púrpura, y le vistieron sus propios vestidos; y le sacan para crucificarle. Y cargaron a uno que pasaba, (Simón Cireneo padre de Alejandro y de Rufo, que venía del campo,) para que llevase su cruz. Y le llevan al lugar de Gólgota, que interpretado quiere decir, lugar de la Calavera. Y le dieron a beber vino mezclado con mirra; mas él no lo tomó. Y cuando le hubieron crucificado, repartieron sus vestidos, echando suertes sobre ellos, qué llevaría cada uno. Y era la hora de tercia cuando le crucificaron. Y el título escrito de su causa era, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS. Y crucificaron con él dos ladrones, uno a su mano derecha, y otro a su mano izquierda. Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Y con los inicuos fue contado. Y los que pasaban le denostaban, meneando la cabeza, y diciendo: ¡Ah! que derribas el templo de Dios, y en tres días lo edificas: Sálvate a ti mismo, y desciende de la cruz. Y de esta manera también los príncipes de los sacerdotes escarneciendo, decían unos a otros, con los escribas: A otros salvó, a sí mismo no puede salvar. El Cristo, Rey de Israel, descienda ahora de la cruz para que veamos y creamos. También los que estaban crucificados con él, le denostaban. Y cuando vino la hora de sexta, fueron hechas tinieblas sobre toda la tierra, hasta la hora de nona. Y a la hora de nona exclamó Jesús a gran voz, diciendo: ¿Eloí, Eloí, lamma sabachthani? que interpretado, quiere decir: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado? Y oyéndolo unos de los que estaban allí, decían: He aquí, a Elías llama. Y corrió uno, e hinchiendo de vinagre una esponja, y poniéndola en una caña, le dio de beber, diciendo: Dejád, veamos si vendrá Elías a quitarle. Mas Jesús, dando una grande voz, espiró. Entonces el velo del templo se partió en dos de alto a bajo. Y el centurión, que estaba delante de él, viendo que había espirado así clamando, dijo: Verdaderamente este hombre era el Hijo de Dios. Y también estaban algunas mujeres mirando de lejos: entre las cuales era María Magdalena, y María madre de Santiago el menor y de Joses, y Salomé; Las cuales, estando aun él en Galilea le seguían, y le servían; y otras muchas que juntamente con él habían subido a Jerusalem. ¶ Y cuando fue la tarde, porque era la preparación, esto es, la víspera del sábado, José de Arimatea, senador noble, que también él esperaba el reino de Dios, vino, y osadamente entró a Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Y Pilato se maravilló, si ya fuese muerto; y haciendo venir al centurión, le preguntó, si era ya muerto. Y como lo entendió del centurión, dio el cuerpo a José. El cual compró una sábana, y quitándole, le envolvió en la sábana, y le puso en un sepulcro labrado en una roca; y revolvió una piedra a la puerta del sepulcro. Y María Magdalena, y María madre de Joses, miraban donde le ponían.

And Judith began to sing this song of thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang with loud voices this song of praise. Judith said, “Begin a song to my God with timbrels. Sing to my Lord with cymbals. Make melody to him psalm and praise. Exalt him, and call upon his name. For the Lord is the God that crushes battles. For in his armies in the midst of the people, he delivered me out of the hand of those who persecuted me. Asshur came out of the mountains from the north. He came with ten thousands of his army. Its multitude stopped the torrents. Their horsemen covered the hills. He said that he would burn up my borders, kill my young men with the sword, throw my nursing children to the ground, give my infants up as prey, and make my virgins a plunder. “The Almighty Lord brought them to nothing by the hand of a woman. For their mighty one did not fall by young men, neither did sons of the Titans strike him. Tall giants didn’t attack him, but Judith the daughter of Merari made him weak with the beauty of her countenance. “For she put off the apparel of her widowhood for the exaltation of those who were distressed in Israel. She anointed her face with ointment, bound her hair in a tiara, and took a linen garment to deceive him. Her sandal ravished his eye. Her beauty took his soul prisoner. The scimitar passed through his neck. “The Persians quaked at her daring. The Medes were daunted at her boldness. “Then my lowly ones shouted aloud. My weak ones were terrified and trembled for fear. They lifted up their voice, and they fled. The sons of ladies pierced them through, and wounded them as fugatives’ children. They perished by the battle of my Lord. “I will sing to my God a new song: O Lord, you are great and glorious, marvelous in strength, invincible. Let all your creation serve you; for you spoke, and they were made. You sent out your spirit, and it built them. There is no one who can resist your voice. For the mountains will be moved from their foundations with the waters, and the rocks will melt as wax at your presence: But you are yet merciful to those who fear you. For all sacrifice is little for a sweet savor, And all the fat is very little for a whole burnt offering to you; But he who fears the Lord is great continually. “Woe to the nations who rise up against my race! The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them in the day of judgement, to put fire and worms in their flesh; and they will weep and feel their pain forever.” Now when they came to Jerusalem, they worshipped God. When the people were purified, they offered their whole burnt offerings, their free will offerings, and their gifts. Judith dedicated all Holofernes’ stuff, which the people had given her, and gave the canopy, which she had taken for herself out of his bedchamber, for a gift to the Lord. And the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for three months, and Judith remained with them. But after these days, everyone departed to his own inheritance. Judith went away to Bethulia, and remained in her own possession, and was honorable in her time in all the land. Many desired her, and no man knew her all the days of her life, from the day that Manasses her husband died and was gathered to his people. She increased in greatness exceedingly; and she grew old in her husband’s house, to one hundred five years, and let her maid go free. Then she died in Bethulia. They buried her in the cave of her husband Manasses. The house of Israel mourned for her seven days. She distributed her goods before she died to all those who were nearest of kin to Manasses her husband, and to those who were nearest of her own kindred. There was no one that made the children of Israel afraid any more in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.

2 Corintios 11

¡Ojalá toleraseis un poco mi insensatez! Mas, sí, tolerádme. Porque os zelo con zelo de Dios; porque os he desposado con un marido, para presentaros como una virgen pura a Cristo. Mas tengo miedo de que, en alguna manera, como la serpiente engañó a Eva con su astucia, así no sean corrompidos vuestros ánimos, apartándose de la simplicidad que es en Cristo: Porque si alguno viniere que predicare otro Cristo que el que hemos predicado; o si recibiereis otro espíritu del que habéis recibido; u otro evangelio del que habéis abrazado, le sufriríais bien. Empero yo pienso, que en nada he sido inferior a los más eminentes apóstoles. Porque aunque soy tosco en la palabra, no empero en la ciencia; mas en todas las cosas somos ya del todo manifiestos a vosotros. ¿Pequé yo humillándome a mí mismo, para que vosotros fueseis ensalzados, porque os he predicado el evangelio de Dios de balde? He despojado las otras iglesias, recibiendo salario de ellos para servir a vosotros. Y estando con vosotros, y teniendo necesidad, a ninguno fui carga; porque lo que me faltaba, lo suplieron los hermanos que vinieron de Macedonia; y en todas cosas me guardé de seros gravoso, y me guardaré. Como la verdad de Cristo es en mí, nadie me atajará esta jactancia en las partes de Acaya. ¿Por qué? ¿por qué no os amo? Dios lo sabe. Mas lo que hago, haré aun; para quitar ocasión de los que querrían ocasión por ser hallados, en aquello de que se glorían, semejantes a nosotros. Porque los tales son falsos apóstoles, obreros fraudulentos que se transfiguran en apóstoles de Cristo. Y no es maravilla; porque el mismo Satanás se transfigura en ángel de luz. Así que no es mucho, si sus ministros se transfiguren como ministros de justicia, cuyo fin será conforme a sus obras. Otra vez digo: Nadie me tenga por insensato; de otra manera, recibídme aun como a insensato, para que me jacte yo un poco. Lo que hablo, no lo hablo según el Señor, sino como con insensatez, en este atrevimiento de jactancia. Puesto que muchos se glorían según la carne: también yo me gloriaré. Porque de buena gana toleráis a los insensatos, siendo vosotros sabios; Porque toleráis si alguien os pone en servidumbre, si alguien os devora, si alguien toma lo vuestro, si alguien se ensalza, si alguien os hiere en la cara. Hablo en cuanto a la afrenta; como si nosotros hubiésemos sido débiles; mas en lo que otro tuviere osadía (hablo con insensatez) también yo tengo osadía. ¿Son ellos Hebreos? yo también soy. ¿Son Israelitas? yo también. ¿Son simiente de Abraham? también yo. ¿Son ministros de Cristo? (sin cordura hablo) yo soy más: en trabajos más abundante, en azotes sobre medida, en cárceles más frecuentemente, en muertes, muchas veces. De los Judíos he recibido cinco cuarentenas de azotes, menos uno. Tres veces he sido azotado con varas, una vez apedreado, tres veces he padecido naufragio, noche y día he estado en lo profundo de la mar. En viajes muchas veces: en peligros de ríos, en peligros de ladrones, en peligros de los de mi nación, en peligros entre los Gentiles, en peligros en la ciudad, en peligros en el desierto, en peligros en la mar, en peligros entre falsos hermanos: En trabajo y fatiga, en muchas vigilias, en hambre y sed, en muchos ayunos, en frío y en desnudez: Sin las cosas de fuera, lo que me sobreviene cada día, es a saber, el cuidado de todas las iglesias. ¿Quién desfallece, y yo no desfallezco? ¿Quién se ofende, y yo no me abraso? Si es menester gloriarme, me gloriaré yo de las cosas que son de mis flaquezas. El Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesu Cristo, que es bendito por los siglos, sabe que no miento. En Damasco, el gobernador por el rey Aretas guardaba la ciudad de los Damascenos queriendo prenderme; Y fui abajado del muro por una ventana, y me escapé de sus manos.
