Oración matutina — primera lectura

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment will touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died; And their departure was accounted to be their hurt, And their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace. For even if in the sight of men they be punished, Their hope is full of immortality; And having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good; Because God made trial of them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he proved them, And as a whole burnt offering he accepted them. And in the time of their visitation they will shine forth, And as sparks among stubble they will run to and fro. They will judge nations, and have dominion over peoples; And the Lord will reign over them for evermore. They that trust on him will understand truth, And the faithful will abide with him in love; Because grace and mercy are to his chosen. But the ungodly will be requited even as they reasoned, They which lightly regarded the righteous man, and revolted from the Lord; (For he that sets at nothing wisdom and discipline is miserable;) And void is their hope and their toils unprofitable, And useless are their works: Their wives are foolish, and wicked are their children; Accursed is their begetting. Because happy is the barren that is undefiled, She who has not conceived in transgression; She will have fruit when God visiteth souls. And happy is the eunuch which has wrought no lawless deed with his hands, Nor imagined wicked things against the Lord; For there will be given him for his faithfulness a peculiar favor, And a lot in the sanctuary of the Lord more delightsome than wife or children. For good labors have fruit of great renown; And the root of understanding can’t fail. But children of adulterers will not come to maturity, And the seed of an unlawful bed will vanish away. For if they live long, they will be held in no account, And at the last their old age will be without honor. And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, Nor in the day of decision will they have consolation. For the end of an unrighteous generation is always grievous.
Oración matutina — segunda lectura
Habiendo muchos tentado a poner en orden la historia de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido del todo certificadas, Como nos las enseñaron los que desde el principio fueron testigos de vista, y ministros de la palabra: Háme parecido bueno también a mí, después de haber entendido todas las cosas desde el principio con diligencia, escribírtelas por orden, oh muy buen Téofilo, Para que conozcas la verdad de las cosas, en las cuales has sido enseñado. ¶ Hubo en los días de Heródes rey de Judea, un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, de la clase de Abías; y su mujer era de las hijas de Aarón, llamada Elisabet. Y eran ambos justos delante de Dios, andando en todos los mandamientos y estatutos del Señor sin reprensión. Y no tenían hijo; porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran ya avanzados en sus días. Y aconteció, que administrando Zacarías el sacerdocio delante de Dios en el orden de su clase, Conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, salió en suerte a quemar incienso, entrando en el templo del Señor. Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera orando a la hora del incienso. Y le apareció el ángel del Señor que estaba a la mano derecha del altar del incienso. Y se turbó Zacarías viéndole, y cayó temor sobre él. Mas el ángel le dijo: Zacarías, no temas; porque tu oración ha sido oída; y tu mujer Elisabet te parirá un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Juan; Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se gozarán de su nacimiento; Porque será grande delante de Dios; y no beberá vino ni sidra; y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre. Y a muchos de los hijos de Israel convertirá al Señor Dios de ellos; Porque él irá delante de él con el espíritu y virtud de Elías, para convertir los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos, para aparejar al Señor pueblo perfecto. Y dijo Zacarías al ángel: ¿En qué conoceré esto? porque yo soy viejo, y mi mujer avanzada en días. Y respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel, que estoy delante de Dios; y soy enviado a hablarte, y a darte estas buenas nuevas. Y he aquí, serás mudo, y no podrás hablar, hasta el día que esto sea hecho; por cuanto no creíste a mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su tiempo. Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se maravillaban que él se tardase tanto en el templo. Y saliendo, no les podía hablar; y entendieron que había visto visión en el templo; y él les hablaba por señas; y quedó mudo. Y fue, que cumplidos los días de su ministerio, se vino a su casa. Y después de aquellos días concibió su mujer Elisabet, y se escondió por cinco meses, diciendo: Porque el Señor me hizo esto en los días en que miró para quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres. ¶ Y al sexto mes el ángel Gabriel fue enviado de Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, que se llama Nazaret, A una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José de la casa de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María. Y entrando el ángel a donde estaba ella, dijo: Tengas gozo, altamente favorecida, el Señor es contigo: bendita tú entre las mujeres. Mas ella, como le vio, se turbó de su hablar; y pensaba que salutación fuese esta. Entonces el ángel le dijo: María, no temas, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios. Y he aquí, que concibirás en el vientre, y parirás un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús. Este será grande, e Hijo del Altísimo será llamado, y le dará el Señor Dios el trono de David su padre; Y reinará en la casa de Jacob eternamente, y de su reino no habrá cabo. Entonces María dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto? porque no conozco varón. Y respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y la virtud del Altísimo te hará sombra; por lo cual también lo Santo que de ti nacerá, será llamado Hijo de Dios. Y, he aquí, Elisabet tu parienta, también ella ha concebido un hijo en su vejez; y éste es el sexto mes a ella que era llamada la estéril; Porque ninguna cosa es imposible para Dios. Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor, hágase en mí conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se partió de ella. ¶ En aquellos días levantándose María, fue a la serranía con priesa a una ciudad de Judá.

Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.
Oración vespertina — segunda lectura
Esta es la tercera vez que vengo a vosotros: en la boca de dos o de tres testigos constará toda palabra. Ya he dicho antes, y ahora digo otra vez como si estuviera ya presente; y ahora estando ausente lo escribo a los que pecaron antes, y a todos los demás, que si vengo otra vez, no perdonaré; Pues que buscáis la experiencia de Cristo que habla en mí, el cual no es flaco para con vosotros, antes es poderoso en vosotros. Porque aunque fue crucificado por flaqueza, vive empero por poder de Dios; porque también nosotros aunque somos flacos en él, empero viviremos con él por el poder de Dios hacia vosotros. Examináos a vosotros mismos si sois en la fe; probáos a vosotros mismos. ¿No sabéis vosotros mismos, como que Jesu Cristo es en vosotros, si no sois reprobados? Mas espero que conoceréis que nosotros no somos reprobados. Oramos empero a Dios que ninguna cosa mala hagáis: no para que nosotros seamos hallados aprobados, mas para que vosotros hagáis lo que es bueno, aunque nosotros seamos como reprobados. Porque ninguna cosa podemos contra la verdad, sino por la verdad. Por lo cual nos gozamos de que seamos nosotros flacos, y que vosotros seáis fuertes; y aun deseamos esto, a saber, vuestra consumación. Por tanto os escribo esto estando ausente, por no usar, estando presente, de dureza, conforme al poder que el Señor me ha dado para edificación, y no para destrucción. En fin, hermanos, hayáis gozo, seáis perfectos, consoláos, sintáis una misma cosa, vivíd en paz, y el Dios de paz y de caridad será con vosotros. Saludáos los unos a los otros con beso santo. Todos los santos os saludan. La gracia del Señor Jesu Cristo, y el amor de Dios, y la comunión del Espíritu Santo sea con vosotros todos.
