There is a reproof that is not comely; And there is a man that keeps silence, and he is wise. How good is it to reprove, rather than to be angry; And he that makes confession will be kept back from hurt. As is the lust of an eunuch to deflower a virgin; So is he that executes judgements with violence. There is one that keeps silence, and is found wise; And there is one that is hated for his much talk. There is one that keeps silence, for he has no answer to make; And there is that keeps silence, as knowing his time. A wise man will be silent till his time come; But the braggart and fool will overpass his time. He that uses many words will be abhorred; And he that takes to himself authority therein will be hated. There is a prosperity that a man finds in misfortunes; And there is a gain that turns to loss. There is a gift that will not profit you; And there is a gift whose recompense is double. There is an abasement because of glory; And there is that has lifted up his head from a low estate. There is that buys much for a little, And pays for it again sevenfold. He that is wise in words will make himself beloved; But the pleasantries of fools will be wasted. The gift of a fool will not profit you; For his eyes are many instead of one. He will give little, and upbraid much; And he will open his mouth like a crier: Today he will lend, and tomorrow he will ask it again: Such an one is a hateful man. The fool will say, I have no friend, And I have no thanks for my good deeds; They that eat my bread are of evil tongue. How often, and of how many, will he be laughed to scorn! A slip on a pavement is better than a slip with the tongue; So the fall of the wicked will come speedily. A man without grace is as a tale out of season: It will be continually in the mouth of the ignorant. A wise sentence from a fool’s mouth will be rejected; For he will not speak it in its season. There is that is hindered from sinning through lack; And when he takes rest, he will not be troubled. There is that destroys his soul through bashfulness; And by a foolish countenance he will destroy it. There is that for bashfulness promises to his friend; And he makes him his enemy for nothing. A lie is a foul blot in a man: It will be continually in the mouth of the ignorant. A thief is better than a man that is continually lying: But they both will inherit destruction. The disposition of a liar is dishonor; And his shame is with him continually. He that is wise in words will advance himself; And one that is prudent will please great men. He that tils his land will raise his heap high; And he that pleases great men will get pardon for iniquity. Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise, And as a muzzle on the mouth, turn away reproofs. Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is out of sight, What profit is in them both? Better is a man that hides his folly Than a man that hides his wisdom.

Lucas 20

Y aconteció un día, que enseñando él al pueblo en el templo, y anunciando el evangelio, sobrevinieron los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, con los ancianos, Y le hablaron, diciendo: Dinos ¿con qué autoridad haces estas cosas: o quién es el que te ha dado esta autoridad? Respondiendo entonces Jesús, les dijo: Preguntaros he yo también una palabra; respondédme: ¿El bautismo de Juan, era del cielo, o de los hombres? Mas ellos pensaban dentro de sí, diciendo: Si dijéremos: Del cielo; dirá: ¿Por qué pues no le creísteis? Y si dijéremos: De los hombres, todo el pueblo nos apedreará; porque están ciertos que Juan era un profeta. Y respondieron, que no sabían de donde había sido. Entonces Jesús les dijo: Ni yo os digo tampoco con qué autoridad hago yo estas cosas. ¶ Y comenzó a decir al pueblo esta parábola: Un hombre plantó una viña, y la arrendó a unos labradores, y se ausentó por mucho tiempo. Y al tiempo oportuno envió un siervo a los labradores, para que le diesen del fruto de la viña; mas los labradores hiriéndole, le enviaron vacío. Y volvió a enviar otro siervo; y ellos a éste también, herido y afrentado, le enviaron vacío. Y volvió a enviar al tercer siervo; y también a éste echaron herido. Entonces el señor de la viña dijo: ¿Qué haré? enviaré mi Hijo amado: quizá cuando a éste vieren, le tendrán respeto. Mas los labradores viéndole pensaron entre sí, diciendo: Este es el heredero: veníd, matémosle, para que la herencia sea nuestra. Y echándole fuera de la viña, le mataron: ¿Qué pues les hará el señor de la viña? Vendrá, y destruirá a estos labradores; y dará su viña a otros. Y como ellos lo oyeron, dijeron: Guarda. Mas él mirándolos, dice: ¿Qué pues es lo que está escrito: La piedra que desecharon los edificadores, esta vino a ser cabeza de la esquina? Cualquiera que cayere sobre aquella piedra será quebrantado; mas sobre el que la piedra cayere, le desmenuzará. Y procuraban los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas echarle mano en aquella hora, mas tuvieron miedo del pueblo; porque entendieron que contra ellos había dicho esta parábola. ¶ Y acechándole, enviaron espiones que se simulasen justos, para tomarle en sus palabras, para que así le entregasen a la jurisdicción y a la potestad del presidente: Los cuales le preguntaron, diciendo: Maestro, sabemos que dices y enseñas bien; y que no tienes respeto a la persona de nadie, antes enseñas el camino de Dios con verdad. ¿Nos es lícito dar tributo a César, o no? Mas él, entendida la astucia de ellos, les dijo: ¿Por qué me tentáis? Mostrádme una moneda. ¿De quién tiene la imagen, y la inscripción? Y respondiendo, dijeron: De César. Entonces les dijo: Pues dad a César lo que es de César; y lo que es de Dios, a Dios. Y no pudieron reprender sus palabras delante del pueblo: antes maravillados de su respuesta, callaron. ¶ Y llegándose unos de los Saduceos, los cuales niegan haber resurrección, le preguntaron, Diciendo: Maestro, Moisés nos escribió: Si el hermano de alguno muriere teniendo mujer, y muriere sin hijos, que su hermano tome la mujer, y levante simiente a su hermano. Fueron pues siete hermanos; y el primero tomó mujer, y murió sin hijos. Y la tomó el segundo, el cual también murió sin hijos. Y la tomó el tercero: asimismo también todos siete; y no dejaron simiente, y murieron. Y a la postre de todos murió también la mujer. En la resurrección, pues, ¿mujer de cuál de ellos será? porque los siete la tuvieron por mujer. Entonces respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Los hijos de este siglo se casan, y se dan en casamiento; Mas los que fueron tenidos por dignos de aquel siglo, y de la resurrección de los muertos, ni se casan, ni se dan en casamiento. Porque no pueden ya más morir; porque son iguales a los ángeles, y son hijos de Dios, siendo hijos de la resurrección. Y que los muertos hayan de resucitar, Moisés aun lo enseñó junto al zarzal, cuando dice al Señor: Dios de Abraham, y Dios de Isaac, y Dios de Jacob. Porque Dios, no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos; porque todos viven en cuanto a él. Y respondiéndole unos de los escribas, dijeron: Maestro, bien has dicho. Y no osaron más preguntarle algo. ¶ Y él les dijo: ¿Cómo dicen que el Cristo es hijo de David? Y el mismo David dice en el libro de los Salmos: Dijo el Señor a mi Señor: Asiéntate a mi diestra, Entre tanto que pongo tus enemigos por estrado de tus pies. Así que David le llama Señor, ¿cómo pues es su hijo? Y oyéndolo todo el pueblo, dijo a sus discípulos: Guardáos de los escribas, que quieren andar con ropas largas, y aman las salutaciones en las plazas; y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas; y los primeros asientos en las cenas: Que devoran las casas de las viudas, simulando larga oración: estos recibirán mayor condenación.

My son, have you sinned? add no more thereto; And make supplication for your former sins. Flee from sin as from the face of a serpent; For if you draw near it will bite you: The teeth thereof are the teeth of a lion, Slaying the souls of men. All iniquity is as a two-edged sword; Its stroke has no healing. Terror and violence will lay waste riches; So the house of a haughty man will be laid waste. Supplication from a poor man’s mouth reaches to the ears of God, And his judgement comes speedily. One that hates reproof is in the path of the sinner; And he that fears the Lord will turn again in his heart. He that is mighty in tongue is known afar off: But the man of understanding knows when he slips. He that builds his house with other men’s money Is like one that gathers himself stones against winter. The congregation of wicked men is as tow wrapped together; And the end of them is a flame of fire. The way of sinners is made smooth with stones; And at the last end thereof is the pit of Hades. He that keeps the law becomes master of the intent thereof; And the end of the fear of the Lord is wisdom. He that is not clever will not be instructed; And there is a cleverness which makes bitterness to abound. The knowledge of a wise man will be made to abound as a flood; And his counsel as a fountain of life. The inward parts of a fool are like a broken vessel; And he will hold no knowledge. If a man of knowledge hear a wise word, He will commend it, and add to it: The dissolute man hears it, and it displeases him, And he puts it away behind his back. The discourse of a fool is like a burden in the way; But grace will be found on the lips of the wise. The mouth of the prudent man will be sought for in the congregation; And they will ponder his words in their heart. As a house that is destroyed, so is wisdom to a fool; And the knowledge of an unwise man is as talk without sense. Instruction is as fetters on the feet of an unwise man, And as manacles on the right hand. A fool lifts up his voice with laughter; But a clever man will scarce smile quietly. Instruction is to a prudent man as an ornament of gold, And as a bracelet upon his right arm. The foot of a fool is soon in another man’s house; But a man of experience will be ashamed of entering. A foolish man peepeth in from the door of another man’s house; But a man that is instructed will stand without. It is a lack of instruction in a man to listen at the door; But the prudent man will be grieved with the disgrace. The lips of strangers will be grieved at these things; But the words of prudent men will be weighed in the balance. The heart of fools is in their mouth; But the mouth of wise men is their heart. When the ungodly curses Satan, He curses his own soul. A whisperer defiles his own soul, And will be hated wherever he sojourneth.

Colosenses 4

Señores, hacéd lo que es justo y derecho con vuestros siervos, estando ciertos que también vosotros tenéis un Señor en los cielos. Perseverád en la oración, velando en ella con hacimiento de gracias: Orando juntamente también por nosotros, que Dios nos abra la puerta de la palabra para que hablemos el misterio de Cristo, (por el cual aun estoy preso;) A fin de que le manifieste, como me conviene hablar. Andád en sabiduría para con los de afuera, rescatando el tiempo. Vuestra palabra sea siempre con gracia, sazonada con sal, que sepáis como os conviene responder a cada uno. Mis negocios todos os hará saber Tíquico, hermano mío amado, y fiel ministro, y consiervo en el Señor: Al cual os he enviado para esto mismo, a saber, que entienda vuestros negocios, y consuele vuestros corazones; Con Onésimo, amado y fiel hermano, el cual es de vosotros. Todo lo que acá pasa estos os harán saber. Os saluda Aristarco, mi compañero en prisiones, y Márcos, el sobrino de Barnabás, (acerca del cual habéis recibido mandamientos: si viniere a vosotros, le recibiréis;) Y Jesús, el que es llamado Justo: los cuales son de la circuncisión: estos solos son los que me ayudan en el reino de Dios: los cuales han me sido consuelo. Saludád a los hermanos que están en Laodicea, y a Nímfas, y a la iglesia que está en su casa. Y cuando esta carta fuere leída entre vosotros, hacéd que también sea leída en la iglesia de los Laodicenses; y la de Laodicea que la leéis también vosotros. Y decíd a Arquipo: Mira que cumplas el ministerio que has recibido del Señor. La salutación de mi mano, de Pablo. Acordáos de mis prisiones. La gracia sea con vosotros.
