Many have sinned for a thing indifferent; And he that seeks to multiply gain will turn his eye away. A nail will stick fast between the joinings of stones; And sin will thrust itself in between buying and selling. Unless a man hold on diligently in the fear of the Lord, His house will soon be overthrown. In the shaking of a sieve, the refuse remains; So the filth of man in his reasoning. The furnace will prove the potter’s vessels; And the trial of a man is in his reasoning. The fruit of a tree declares the husbandry thereof; So is the utterance of the thought of the heart of a man. Praise no man before you hear him reason; For this is the trial of men. If you follow righteousness, you will obtain her, And put her on, as a long robe of glory. Birds will resort to their like; And truth will return to those who practise her. The lion lies in wait for prey; So does sin for those who work iniquity. The discourse of a godly man is always wisdom: But the foolish man changes as the moon. Among men void of understanding observe the opportunity; But stay continually among the thoughtful. The discourse of fools is an offence; And their laughter is in the wantonness of sin. The talk of a man of many oaths will make the hair stand upright; And their strife makes one stop his ears. The strife of the proud is a shedding of blood; And their reviling of each other is a grievous thing to hear. He that reveals secrets destroys credit, And will not find a friend to his mind. Love a friend, and keep faith with him: But if you reveal his secrets, You shall not pursue after him; For as a man has destroyed his enemy, So have you destroyed the friendship of your neighbor. And as a bird which you have loosed out of your hand, So have you let your neighbor go, and you will not catch him again: Pursue him not, for he is gone far away, And has escaped as a gazelle out of the snare. For a wound may be bound up, and after reviling there may be a reconcilement; But he that reveals secrets has lost hope. One that winks with the eye contriveth evil things; And no man will remove him from it. When you are present, he will speak sweetly, And will admire your words; But afterward he will writhe his mouth, And set a trap for you in your words. I have hated many things, but nothing like him; And the Lord will hate him. One that casts a stone on high casts it on his own head; And a deceitful stroke will open wounds. He that digs a pit will fall into it; And he that sets a snare will be taken therein. He that does evil things, they will roll upon him, And he will not know whence they have come to him. Mockery and reproach are from the haughty; And vengeance, as a lion, will lie in wait for him. They that rejoice at the fall of the godly will be taken in a snare; And anguish will consume them before they die. Wrath and anger, these also are abominations; And a sinful man will possess them.

Oración matutina — segunda lectura

Lucas 23

Y levantándose toda la multitud de ellos, lleváronle a Pilato. Y comenzaron a acusarle, diciendo: A éste hemos hallado que pervierte nuestra nación, y que veda dar tributo a César, diciendo que él es el Cristo el Rey. Entonces Pilato le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el rey de los Judíos? Y respondiéndole él, dijo: Tú lo dices. Y Pilato dijo a los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y al pueblo: Ninguna culpa hallo en este hombre. Mas ellos porfiaban, diciendo: Alborota al pueblo, enseñando por toda Judea, comenzando desde Galilea hasta aquí. Entonces Pilato, oyendo de Galilea, preguntó si el hombre era Galileo. Y como entendió que era de la jurisdicción de Heródes, le remitió a Heródes, el cual también estaba en Jerusalem en aquellos días. Y Heródes, viendo a Jesús, se holgó mucho; porque había mucho que le deseaba ver; porque había oído de él muchas cosas; y tenía esperanza que le vería hacer algún milagro. Y le preguntaba con muchas palabras; mas él nada le respondió. Y estaban los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas acusándole con gran porfía. Mas Heródes con sus soldados le menospreció, y escarneció, vistiéndole de una ropa espléndida; y le volvió a enviar a Pilato. Y fueron hechos amigos entre sí Pilato y Heródes en el mismo día; porque antes eran enemigos entre sí. Entonces Pilato, convocando los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los magistrados, y el pueblo, Les dijo: Me habéis presentado a éste por hombre que pervierte al pueblo; y, he aquí, yo preguntando delante de vosotros, no he hallado alguna culpa en este hombre de aquellas de que le acusáis. Y ni aun Heródes; porque os remití a él; y he aquí, que ninguna cosa digna de muerte se le ha hecho. Le soltaré pues castigado. Y tenía necesidad de soltarles uno en la fiesta. Y toda la multitud dio voces a una, diciendo: Afuera con éste, y suéltanos a Barrabás: (El cual había sido echado en la cárcel por una sedición hecha en la ciudad, y una muerte.) Y les habló otra vez Pilato, queriendo soltar a Jesús. Mas ellos volvían a dar voces, diciendo: Crucifícale, Crucifícale. Y él les dijo la tercera vez: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hecho éste? ninguna culpa de muerte he hallado en él: le castigaré pues, y le soltaré. Mas ellos instaban a grandes voces, pidiendo que fuese crucificado; y las voces de ellos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes prevalecieron. Entonces Pilato juzgó que se hiciese lo que ellos pedían. Y les soltó a aquel que había sido echado en la cárcel por sedición y una muerte, al cual habían pedido; mas entregó a Jesús a la voluntad de ellos. ¶ Y llevándole, tomaron a un Simón, Cireneo, que venía del campo, y le pusieron encima la cruz para que la llevase en pos de Jesús. Y le seguía grande multitud de pueblo, y de mujeres, las cuales le lloraban, y lamentaban. Mas Jesús, vuelto a ellas, les dijo: Hijas de Jerusalem, no me lloréis a mí; mas lloráos a vosotras mismas, y a vuestros hijos. Porque, he aquí, que vendrán días, en que dirán: Bienaventuradas las estériles, y los vientres que no parieron, y los pechos que no criaron. Entonces comenzarán a decir a los montes: Caéd sobre nosotros; y a los collados: Cubrídnos. Porque si en el árbol verde hacen estas cosas, ¿en el seco qué se hará? Y llevaban también con él otros dos, malhechores, a matar con él. ¶ Y como vinieron al lugar que se llama Calvario, le crucificaron allí; y a los malhechores, uno a la derecha, y otro a la izquierda. Mas Jesús decía: Padre, perdónalos; porque no saben lo que hacen. Y partiendo sus vestidos, echaron suertes. Y el pueblo estaba mirando; y burlaban de él los príncipes con ellos, diciendo: A otros salvó: sálvese a sí mismo, si éste es el Mesías, el escogido de Dios. Escarnecían de él también los soldados, llegándose, y presentándole vinagre, Y diciendo: Si tú eres el Rey de los Judíos, sálvate a ti mismo. Y había también un título escrito sobre él con letras Griegas, y Latinas, y Hebráicas: ESTE ES EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS. ¶ Y uno de los malhechores que estaban colgados, le injuriaba, diciendo: Si tú eres el Cristo, sálvate a ti mismo, y a nosotros. Y respondiendo el otro, le riñó, diciendo: ¿Ni aun tú temes a Dios, estando en la misma condenación? Y nosotros a la verdad, justamente, porque recibimos lo que merecieron nuestros hechos; mas éste ningún mal hizo. Y dijo a Jesús: Señor, acuérdate de mí cuando vinieres en tu reino. Entonces Jesús le dijo: De cierto te digo, que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso. ¶ Y era como la hora de sexta, y fueron hechas tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora de nona. Y el sol se oscureció, y el velo del templo se rompió por medio. Entonces Jesús, clamando a gran voz, dijo: Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu. Y habiendo dicho esto, espiró. Y como el centurión vio lo que había acontecido, dio gloria a Dios, diciendo: Verdaderamente este hombre era justo. Y toda la multitud de los que estaban presentes a este espectáculo, viendo lo que había acontecido, se volvían hiriendo sus pechos. Mas todos sus conocidos estaban de lejos, y las mujeres que le habían seguido desde Galilea, mirando estas cosas. ¶ Y, he aquí, un varón llamado José, el cual era senador, varón bueno, y justo: El cual no había consentido en el consejo ni en los hechos de ellos, varón de Arimatea, ciudad de los Judíos: el cual también esperaba el reino de Dios. Este llegó a Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Y quitado de la cruz, le envolvió en una sábana, y le puso en un sepulcro que era labrado en roca, en el cual aun ninguno había sido puesto. Y era día de la preparación de la pascua; y el sábado esclarecía. Y viniendo también las mujeres que le habían seguido de Galilea, vieron el sepulcro, y como fue puesto su cuerpo. Y vueltas, aparejaron drogas aromáticas, y ungüentos; y reposaron el sábado, conforme al mandamiento.

He that takes vengeance will find vengeance from the Lord; And he will surely make firm his sins. Forgive your neighbor the hurt that he has done you; And then your sins will be pardoned when you pray. Man cherisheth anger against man; And does he seek healing from the Lord? Upon a man like himself he has no mercy; And does he make supplication for his own sins? He being himself flesh nourishes wrath: Who will make atonement for his sins? Remember your last end, and cease from enmity: Remember corruption and death, and abide in the commandments. Remember the commandments, and be not angry with your neighbor; And remember the covenant of the Highest, and wink at ignorance. Abstain from strife, and you will diminish your sins: For a passionate man will kindle strife; And a man that is a sinner will trouble friends, And will make debate among those who are at peace. As is the fuel of the fire, so will it burn; And as the stoutness of the strife is, so will it burn: As is the strength of the man, so will be his wrath; And as is his wealth, so will he exalt his anger. A contention begun in haste kindles a fire; And a hasty fighting sheds blood. If you blow a spark, it will burn; And if you spit upon it, it will be quenched: And both these shall come out of your mouth. Curse the whisperer and double-tongued: For he has destroyed many that were at peace. A third person’s tongue has shaken many, And dispersed them from nation to nation; And it has pulled down strong cities, And overthrown the houses of great men. A third person’s tongue has cast out brave women, And deprived them of their labors. He that hearkens to it will not find rest, Nor shall he dwell quietly. The stroke of a whip makes a mark in the flesh; But the stroke of a tongue will break bones. Many have fallen by the edge of the sword: Yet not so many as those who have fallen because of the tongue. Happy is he that is sheltered from it, That has not passed through the wrath thereof; That has not drawn its yoke, And has not been bound with its bands. For the yoke thereof is a yoke of iron, And the bands thereof are bands of brass. The death thereof is an evil death; And Hades were better than it. It shall not have rule over godly men; And they shall not be burned in its flame. They that forsake the Lord shall fall into it; And it shall burn among them, and shall not be quenched: It shall be sent forth upon them as a lion; And as a leopard it shall destroy them. Look that you hedge your possession about with thorns; Bind up your silver and your gold; And make a balance and a weight for your words; And make a door and a bar for your mouth. Take heed lest you slip therein; Lest you fall before one that lies in wait.

1 Tesalonicenses 3

Por lo cual no lo pudiendo ya más sufrir, acordamos de quedarnos solos en Aténas; Y enviamos a Timoteo, nuestro hermano, y ministro de Dios, y ayudador nuestro en el evangelio de Cristo, a confirmaros y a exhortaros en cuanto a vuestra fe; Para que nadie se conmueva en estas tribulaciones; porque vosotros sabéis que nosotros somos puestos para esto. Que aun estando con vosotros os predecíamos que habíamos de pasar tribulaciones, como ha acontecido, y lo sabéis. Por lo cual también yo no lo pudiendo ya más aguantar, envié a reconocer vuestra fe, temiendo que no os haya tentado de algún modo el tentador, y que nuestro trabajo haya sido en vano. Empero volviendo ahora de vosotros a nosotros Timoteo, y trayéndonos las buenas nuevas de vuestra fe y caridad; y que siempre tenéis buena memoria de nosotros, deseando ardientemente vernos, como también nosotros a vosotros: En ello, hermanos, recibimos consolación de vosotros en toda nuestra aflicción y aprieto, por causa de vuestra fe; Porque ahora vivimos nosotros, si vosotros estáis firmes en el Señor. Por lo cual ¿qué hacimiento de gracias podremos dar a Dios otra vez por vosotros, por todo el gozo con que nos gozamos a causa de vosotros delante de nuestro Dios; Orando de noche y de día con grande instancia, que veamos vuestro rostro, y que cumplamos lo que falta a vuestra fe? Mas el mismo Dios y Padre nuestro, y el Señor nuestro Jesu Cristo encamine nuestro viaje a vosotros. Y el Señor os haga crecer y abundar en amor los unos para con los otros, y para con todos, así como también nosotros para con vosotros. Para que sean confirmados vuestros corazones en la santidad irreprensibles delante del Dios y Padre nuestro, en la venida del Señor nuestro Jesu Cristo con todos sus santos.
