I will give thanks to you, O Lord, O King, And will praise you, O God my Saviour: I do give thanks to your name: For you were my protector and helper, And did deliver my body out of destruction, And out of the snare of a slanderous tongue, From lips that forge lies, And was my helper before those who stood by; And did deliver me, according to the abundance of your mercy, and greatness of your name, From the gnashings of teeth ready to devour, Out of the hand of such as sought my life, Out of the manifold afflictions which I had; From the choking of a fire on every side, And out of the midst of fire which I kindled not; Out of the depth of the belly of the grave, And from an unclean tongue, And from lying words, The slander of an unrighteous tongue to the king. My soul drew near even to death, And my life was near to the grave beneath. They compassed me on every side, And there was none to help me. I was looking for the succour of men, And it was not. And I remembered your mercy, O Lord, And your working which has been from everlasting, How you deliver those who wait for you, And save them out of the hand of the enemies. And I lifted up my supplication from the earth, And prayed for deliverance from death. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, That he would not forsake me in the days of affliction, In the time when there was no help against the proud. I will praise your name continually, And will sing praise with thanksgiving; And my supplication was heard: For you saved me from destruction, And delivered me from the evil time: Therefore will I give thanks and praise to you, And bless the name of the Lord. When I was yet young, Or ever I went abroad, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. Before the temple I asked for her, And I will seek her out even to the end. From her flower as from the ripening grape my heart delighted in her: My foot trod in uprightness, From my youth I tracked her out. I bowed down my ear a little, and received her, And found for myself much instruction. I profited in her: To him that gives me wisdom I will give glory. For I purposed to practice her, And I was zealous for that which is good; And I shall never be put to shame. My soul has wrestled in her, And in my doing I was exact: I spread forth my hands to the heaven above, And bewailed my ignorances of her. I set my soul aright to her, And in pureness I found her. I got me a heart joined with her from the beginning: Therefore shall I not be forsaken. My inward part also was troubled to seek her: Therefore I have gotten a good possession. The Lord gave me a tongue for my reward; And I will praise him therewith. Draw near to me, you⌃ unlearned, And lodge in the house of instruction. Say, wherefore are you⌃ lacking in these things, And your souls are very thirsty? I opened my mouth, and spoke, Get her for yourselves without money. Put your neck under the yoke, And let your soul receive instruction: She is hard at hand to find. Behold with your eyes, How that I laboured but a little, And found for myself much rest. Get you instruction with a great sum of silver, And gain much gold by her. May your soul rejoice in his mercy, And may you⌃ not be put to shame in praising him. Work your work before the time comes, And in his time he will give you your reward.

Oración matutina — segunda lectura

Juan 11

Estaba entonces enfermo un hombre llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana. (Era María la que ungió al Señor con ungüento, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo.) Enviaron pues sus hermanas a él, diciendo: Señor, he aquí, el que amas está enfermo. Y oyéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino por gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella. Y amaba Jesús a Marta, y a su hermana, y a Lázaro. Como oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, entonces a la verdad se quedó dos días en aquel lugar donde estaba. Luego después de esto dijo a sus discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez. Dícenle sus discípulos: Rabbi, ahora poco procuraban los Judíos apedrearte, ¿y vas otra vez allá? Respondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anduviere de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo. Mas el que anduviere de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él. Dicho esto, díceles después: Lázaro nuestro amigo duerme; mas voy a despertarle del sueño. Dijéronle entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, bueno estará. Mas esto decía Jesús de la muerte de él; y ellos pensaron que hablaba de dormir de sueño. Entonces pues Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro es muerto; Y huélgome por vosotros, que yo no haya estado allí, porque creáis; mas vamos a él. Dijo entonces Tomás, el que se llama Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. Vino pues Jesús, y hallólo, que había cuatro días que estaba en el sepulcro. Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalem como quince estadios. Y muchos de los Judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas de su hermano. Entonces Marta, como oyó que Jesús venía, le salió a recibir; mas María estaba sentada en casa. Entonces Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no hubiera muerto. Mas sé que también ahora, todo lo que pidieres a Dios, te lo dará Dios. Dícele Jesús: Resucitará tu hermano. Marta le dice: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección en el día postrero. Dícele Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección, y la vida: el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá; Y todo aquel que vive, y cree en mí no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto? Ella le dice: Sí, Señor, yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que había de venir al mundo. Y esto dicho, se fue, y llamó en secreto a María su hermana, diciendo: El Maestro está aquí, y te llama. Ella, como lo oyó, se levanta prestamente, y viene a él. (Porque aun no había llegado Jesús a la aldea, mas estaba en aquel lugar donde Marta le había salido a recibir.) Entonces los Judíos que estaban en casa con ella, y la consolaban, como vieron que María se había levantado prestamente, y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí. Mas María, como vino donde estaba Jesús, viéndole, derribóse a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no hubiera muerto mi hermano. Jesús entonces como la vio llorando, y a los Judíos que habían venido juntamente con ella llorando, gimió en espíritu, y se turbó, Y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Dícenle: Señor, ven, y lo verás. Jesús lloraba. Dijeron entonces los Judíos: ¡He aquí cómo le amaba! Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos del ciego, hacer que éste no muriera? Y Jesús, gimiendo otra vez en sí mismo, vino al sepulcro, que era una cueva, la cual tenía una piedra puesta encima. Dice Jesús: Quitád la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había sido muerto, le dice: Señor, hiede ya; que es muerto de cuatro días. Jesús le dice: ¿No te he dicho que si creyeres, verás la gloria de Dios? Entonces quitaron la piedra de donde el muerto había sido puesto; y Jesús, alzando los ojos arriba, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy porque me has oído. Y yo sabía que siempre me oyes; mas por causa del pueblo que está al rededor lo dije, para que crean que tú me has enviado. Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, clamó a gran voz: Lázaro, ven fuera. Entonces el que había sido muerto, salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas; y su rostro estaba envuelto en un sudario. Díceles Jesús: Desatádle, y dejádle ir. ¶ Entonces muchos de los Judíos que habían venido a María, y habían visto lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él. Mas algunos de ellos fueron a los Fariseos, y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho. Entonces los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los Fariseos juntaron concilio, y decían: ¿Qué hacemos? porque este hombre hace muchos milagros. Si le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los Romanos, y quitarán nuestro lugar y la nación. Entonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote de aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada, Ni consideráis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación se pierda. Mas esto no lo dijo de sí mismo; sino que, como era el sumo sacerdote de aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación; Y no solamente por aquella nación, mas también para que juntase en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos. Así que desde aquel día consultaban juntos para matarle. De manera que Jesús ya no andaba manifiestamente entre los Judíos; mas se fue de allí a la tierra que está junto al desierto, a una ciudad que se llama Efraím; y estábase allí con sus discípulos. Y la pascua de los Judíos estaba cerca; y muchos de la tierra subieron a Jerusalem antes de la pascua para purificarse. Y buscaban a Jesús, y hablaban los unos con los otros estando en el templo: ¿Qué os parece, que no vendrá a la fiesta? Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos habían dado mandamiento, que si alguno supiese donde estuviera, que lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

These are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias, wrote in Babylon, in the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burned it with fire. And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book, and in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kings’ sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least to the greatest, even of all those who lived at Babylon by the river Sud. And they wept, and fasted, and prayed before the Lord; they made also a collection of money according to every man’s power: and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem, at the same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedekias the son of Josias king of Judah had made, after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon. And they said, Behold, we have sent you money; buy you therefore with the money burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; and pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that their days may be as the days of heaven above the earth: and the Lord will give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favor in their sight. Pray for us also to the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and to this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us. And you⌃ shall read this book which we have sent to you, to make confession in the house of the Lord, upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn assembly. And you⌃ shall say, To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to our kings, and to our princes, and to our priests, and to our prophets, and to our fathers: for that we have sinned before the Lord, and disobeyed him, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us: since the day that the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to this present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, and we have dealt unadvisedly in not hearkening to his voice. Wherefore the plagues clave to us, and the curse, which the Lord commanded Moses his servant to pronounce in the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as at this day. Nevertheless we didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord our God, according to all the words of the prophets, whom he sent to us: but we walked every man in the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods, and to do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord our God.

Oración vespertina — segunda lectura

2 Timoteo 2

Tú, pues, hijo mío, esfuérzate en la gracia que es en Cristo Jesús. Y lo que has oído de mí entre muchos testigos, esto encarga a hombres fieles que serán idóneos para enseñar también a otros. Tú, pues, sufre trabajos como fiel soldado de Jesu Cristo. Ninguno que milita, se envuelve en los negocios de esta vida por agradar a aquel que le escogió por soldado. Y aun también el que pelea en la palestra, no es coronado si no hubiere peleado legítimamente. El labrador, para recibir los frutos, es menester que trabaje primero. Entiende lo que digo: déte, pues, el Señor entendimiento en todo. Acuérdate que Jesu Cristo, de la simiente de David, resucitó de los muertos, conforme a mi evangelio: Por el cual sufro trabajos, como malhechor, hasta verme entre prisiones; mas la palabra de Dios no está presa. Por tanto todo lo sufro por amor de los escogidos, para que ellos también consigan la salud que es en Cristo Jesús, con gloria eterna. ¶ Palabra fiel: Que si morimos con él, también viviremos con él: Si sufrimos, también reinaremos con él: si le negamos, él también nos negará: Si no creemos, él empero se queda fiel: no se puede negar a sí mismo. Recuérdales estas cosas, protestando delante del Señor, que no tengan contiendas en palabras, que para nada aprovechan, sino para trastornar a los oyentes. Procura con diligencia presentarte a Dios aprobado, obrero que no tiene de qué avergonzarse, que distribuye bien la palabra de verdad. Mas aléjate de los promovedores de disputas profanas y vanas, porque mucho aprovecharán en la impiedad. Y la palabra de ellos corroerá como gangrena; de los cuales es Himeneo, y Fileto, Que se han descaminado de la verdad, diciendo que la resurrección ha ya pasado, y trastornan la fe de algunos. ¶ Mas el fundamento de Dios está firme, el cual tiene este sello: Conoce el Señor los que son suyos; y: Apártese de iniquidad todo aquel que nombra el nombre de Cristo. Empero en una casa grande, no solamente hay vasos de oro y de plata, sino también de madera y de barro; y asimismo unos para honra, y otros para deshonra. Así que el que se purificare de estas cosas, será vaso para honra santificado y útil para los usos del Señor, y aparejado para toda buena obra. También, huye de los deseos juveniles; mas sigue la justicia, la fe, la caridad, la paz, con los que invocan al Señor de limpio corazón. ¶ Empero las cuestiones insensatas e insulsas desecha, sabiendo que engendran contiendas. Y el siervo del Señor no debe ser contencioso, sino manso para con todos, apto para enseñar, sufrido; Que con mansedumbre instruya a los que resisten; por si quizá Dios les dé que se arrepientan, y conozcan la verdad; Y que se despierten y se desenreden del lazo del diablo, los que son tomados vivos por él según su voluntad.
