A slothful man is compared to a stone that is defiled; And every one will hiss him out in his disgrace. A slothful man is compared to the filth of a dunghill: Every man that takes it up will shake out his hand. A father has shame in having begotten an uninstructed son; And a foolish daughter is born to his loss. A prudent daughter will inherit a husband of her own; And she that brings shame is the grief of her father. She that is bold brings shame upon father and husband; And she will be despised of them both. Unseasonable discourse is as music in mourning; But stripes and correction are wisdom at every season. He that teaches a fool is as one that glues a potsherd together; Even as one that wakes a sleeper out of a deep sleep. He that discourseth to a fool is as one discoursing to a man that slumbereth; And at the end he will say, What is it? Weep for the dead, for light has failed him; And weep for a fool, for understanding has failed him: Weep more sweetly for the dead, because he has found rest; But the life of the fool is worse than death. Seven days are the days of mourning for the dead; But for a fool and an ungodly man, all the days of his life. Talk not much with a foolish man, And go not to one that has no understanding: Beware of him, lest you have trouble; And so you shall not be defiled in his onslaught: Turn away from him, and you will find rest; And so you shall not be wearied in his madness. What shall be heavier than lead? And what is the name thereof, but a fool? Sand, and salt, and a mass of iron, is easier to bear, Than a man without understanding. Timber girded and bound into a building will not be loosed with shaking: So a heart established in due season on well advised counsel will not be afraid. A heart settled upon a thoughtful understanding Is as an ornament of plaister on a polished wall. Pales set on a high place will not stand against the wind: So a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool will not stand against any fear. He that pricks the eye will make tears to fall; And he that pricks the heart makes it to show feeling. Whoso casts a stone at birds frays them away; And he that upbraids a friend will dissolve friendship. If you have drawn a sword against a friend, despair not; For there may be a returning. If you have opened your mouth against a friend, fear not; For there may be a reconciling; Except it be for upbraiding, and arrogance, and disclosing of a secret, and a treacherous blow: For these things every friend will flee. Gain trust with your neighbor in his poverty, That in his prosperity you may have gladness: Abide stedfast to him in the time of his affliction, That you may be heir with him in his inheritance. Before fire is the vapor and smoke of a furnace; So revilings before bloodshed. I will not be ashamed to shelter a friend; And I will not hide myself from his face: And if any evil happen to me because of him, Every one that hears it will beware of him. Who shall set a watch over my mouth, And a seal of shrewdness upon my lips, That I fall not from it, and that my tongue destroy me not?

Lucas 21

Y MIRANDO, vió á los ricos que echaban sus ofrendas en el gazofilacio. Y vió también una viuda pobrecilla, que echaba allí dos blancas. Y dijo: De verdad os digo, que esta pobre viuda echó más que todos: Porque todos estos, de lo que les sobra echaron para las ofrendas de Dios; mas ésta de su pobreza echó todo el sustento que tenía. Y á unos que decían del templo, que estaba adornado de hermosas piedras y dones, dijo: Estas cosas que veis, días vendrán que no quedará piedra sobre piedra que no sea destruída. Y le preguntaron, diciendo: Maestro, ¿cuándo será esto? ¿y qué señal habrá cuando estas cosas hayan de comenzar á ser hechas? El entonces dijo: Mirad, no seáis engañados; porque vendrán muchos en mi nombre, diciendo: Yo soy; y, el tiempo está cerca: por tanto, no vayáis en pos de ellos. Empero cuando oyereis guerras y sediciones, no os espantéis; porque es necesario que estas cosas acontezcan primero: mas no luego será el fin. Entonces les dijo: Se levantará gente contra gente, y reino contra reino; Y habrá grandes terremotos, y en varios lugares hambres y pestilencias: y habrá espantos y grandes señales del cielo. Mas antes de todas estas cosas os echarán mano, y perseguirán, entregándoos á las sinagogas y á las cárceles, siendo llevados á los reyes y á los gobernadores por causa de mi nombre. Y os será para testimonio. Poned pues en vuestros corazones no pensar antes cómo habéis de responder: Porque yo os daré boca y sabiduría, á la cual no podrán resistir ni contradecir todos los que se os opondrán. Mas seréis entregados aun de vuestros padres, y hermanos, y parientes, y amigos; y matarán á algunos de vosotros. Y seréis aborrecidos de todos por causa de mi nombre. Mas un pelo de vuestra cabeza no perecerá. En vuestra paciencia poseeréis vuestras almas. Y cuando viereis á Jerusalem cercada de ejércitos, sabed entonces que su destrucción ha llegado. Entonces los que estuvieren en Judea, huyan á los montes; y los que en medio de ella, váyanse; y los que estén en los campos, no entren en ella. Porque estos son días de venganza: para que se cumplan todas las cosas que están escritas. Mas ¡ay de las preñadas, y de las que crían en aquellos días! porque habrá apuro grande sobre la tierra é ira en este pueblo. Y caerán á filo de espada, y serán llevados cautivos á todas las naciones: y Jerusalem será hollada de las gentes, hasta que los tiempos de las gentes sean cumplidos. Entonces habrá señales en el sol, y en la luna, y en las estrellas; y en la tierra angustia de gentes por la confusión del sonido de la mar y de las ondas: Secándose los hombres á causa del temor y expectación de las cosas que sobrevendrán á la redondez de la tierra: porque las virtudes de los cielos serán conmovidas. Y entonces verán al Hijo del hombre, que vendrá en una nube con potestad y majestad grande. Y cuando estas cosas comenzaren á hacerse, mirad, y levantad vuestras cabezas, porque vuestra redención está cerca. Y díjoles una parábola: Mirad la higuera y todos los árboles: Cuando ya brotan, viéndolo, de vosotros mismos entendéis que el verano está ya cerca. Así también vosotros, cuando viereis hacerse estas cosas, entended que está cerca el reino de Dios. De cierto os digo, que no pasará esta generación hasta que todo sea hecho. El cielo y la tierra pasarán; mas mis palabras no pasarán. Y mirad por vosotros, que vuestros corazones no sean cargados de glotonería y embriaguez, y de los cuidados de esta vida, y venga de repente sobre vosotros aquel día. Porque como un lazo vendrá sobre todos los que habitan sobre la faz de toda la tierra. Velad pues, orando en todo tiempo, que seáis tenidos por dignos de evitar todas estas cosas que han de venir, y de estar en pie delante del Hijo del hombre. Y enseñaba de día en el templo; y de noche saliendo, estábase en el monte que se llama de las Olivas. Y todo el pueblo venía á él por la mañana, para oirle en el templo.

O Lord, Father and Master of my life, Abandon me not to their counsel: Suffer me not to fall by them. Who will set scourges over my thought, And a discipline of wisdom over my heart? That they spare me not for my ignorances, And my heart pass not by their sins: That my ignorances be not multiplied, And my sins abound not; And I will fall before my adversaries, And my enemy rejoice over me. O Lord, Father and God of my life, Give me not a proud look, And turn away concupiscense from me. Let not greediness and chambering overtake me; And give me not over to a shameless mind. Hear you⌃, my children, the discipline of the mouth; And he that keeps it will not be taken. The sinner will be overtaken in his lips; And the reviler and the proud man will stumble therein. Accustom not your mouth to an oath; And be not accustomed to the naming of the Holy One. For as a servant that is continually scourged will not lack a bruise, So he also that swears and names God continually will not be cleansed from sin. A man of many oaths will be filled with iniquity; And the scourge will not depart from his house: If he shall offend, his sin will be upon him; And if he disregard it, he has sinned doubly; And if he has sworn in vain, he will not be justified; For his house will be filled with calamities. There is a manner of speech that is clothed about with death: Let it not be found in the heritage of Jacob; For all these things will be far from the godly, And they will not wallow in sins. Accustom not your mouth to gross rudeness, For therein is the word of sin. Remember your father and your mother, For you sit in the midst of great men; That you be not forgetful before them, And become a fool by your custom; So will you wish that you had not been born, And curse the day of your nativity. A man that is accustomed to words of reproach Will not be corrected all the days of his life. Two sorts of men multiply sins, And the third will bring wrath: A hot mind, as a burning fire, will not be quenched till it be consumed: A fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease till he has burned out the fire. All bread is sweet to a fornicator: He will not leave off till he die. A man that goes astray from his own bed, Saying in his heart, Who sees me? Darkness is round about me, and the walls hide me, And no man sees me; of whom am I afraid? The Most High will not remember my sins; —And the eyes of men are his terror, And he knows not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, Beholding all the ways of men, And looking into secret places. All things were known to him or ever they were created; And in like manner also after they were perfected. This man will be punished in the streets of the city; And where he suspected not he will be taken. So also a wife that leaves her husband, And brings in an heir by a stranger. For first, she was disobedient in the law of the Most High; And secondly, she trespassed against her own husband; And thirdly, she played the adulteress in whoredom, And brought in children by a stranger. She shall be brought out into the congregation; And upon her children will there be visitation. Her children will not spread into roots, And her branches will bear no fruit. She will leave her memory for a curse; And her reproach will not be blotted out. And those who are left behind will know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, And nothing sweeter than to take heed to the commandments of the Lord.

1 Tesalonicenses 1

PABLO, y Silvano, y Timoteo, á la iglesia de los Tesalonicenses que es en Dios Padre y en el Señor Jesucristo: Gracia y paz á vosotros de Dios nuestro Padre y del Señor Jesucristo. Damos siempre gracias á Dios por todos vosotros, haciendo memoria de vosotros en nuestras oraciones; Sin cesar acordándonos delante del Dios y Padre nuestro de la obra de vuestra fe, y del trabajo de amor, y de la tolerancia de la esperanza del Señor nuestro Jesucristo: Sabiendo, hermanos amados de Dios, vuestra elección: Por cuanto nuestro evangelio no fué á vosotros en palabra solamente, mas también en potencia, y en Espíritu Santo, y en gran plenitud; como sabéis cuáles fuimos entre vosotros por amor de vosotros. Y vosotros fuisteis hechos imitadores de nosotros, y del Señor, recibiendo la palabra con mucha tribulación, con gozo del Espíritu Santo: En tal manera que habéis sido ejemplo á todos los que han creído en Macedonia y en Acaya. Porque de vosotros ha sido divulgada la palabra del Señor no sólo en Macedonia y en Acaya, mas aun en todo lugar vuestra fe en Dios se ha extendido; de modo que no tenemos necesidad de hablar nada. Porque ellos cuentan de nosotros cuál entrada tuvimos á vosotros; y cómo os convertisteis de los ídolos á Dios, para servir al Dios vivo y verdadero. Y esperar á su Hijo de los cielos, al cual resucitó de los muertos; á Jesús, el cual nos libró de la ira que ha de venir.
