A wise judge will instruct his people; And the government of a man of understanding will be well ordered. As is the judge of his people, so are his ministers; And as is the ruler of the city, such are all those who dwell therein. An uninstructed king will destroy his people; And a city will be established through the understanding of the powerful. In the hand of the Lord is the authority of the earth; And in due time he will raise up over it one that is profitable. In the hand of the Lord is the prosperity of a man; And upon the person of the scribe will he lay his honor. Be not angry with your neighbor for every wrong; And do nothing by works of violence. Pride is hateful before the Lord and before men; And in the judgement of both will unrighteousness err. Sovereignty is transferred from nation to nation, Because of iniquities, and deeds of violence, and greed of money. Why is earth and ashes proud? Because in his life he has cast away his bowels. It is a long disease; the physician mocketh: And he is a king today, and tomorrow he will die. For when a man is dead, He will inherit creeping things, and beasts, and worms. It is the beginning of pride when a man departs from the Lord; And his heart is departed from him that made him. For the beginning of pride is sin; And he that keeps it will pour forth abomination. For this cause the Lord brought upon them strange calamities, And overthrew them utterly. The Lord cast down the thrones of rulers, And set the meek in their stead. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, And planted the lowly in their stead. The Lord overthrew the lands of nations, And destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He took some of them away, and destroyed them, And made their memorial to cease from the earth. Pride has not been created for men, Nor wrathful anger for the offspring of women. What manner of seed has honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has honor? those who fear the Lord. What manner of seed has no honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has no honor? those who transgress the commandments. In the midst of kindred he that rules them has honor; And in the eyes of the Lord those who fear him. The rich man, and the honorable, and the poor, Their glorying is the fear of the Lord. It is not right to dishonor a poor man that has understanding; And it is not fitting to glorify a man that is a sinner. The great man, and the judge, and the mighty man, will be glorified; And there is not one of them greater than he that fears the Lord. Free men will minister to a wise servant; And a man that has knowledge will not murmur thereat. Be not over wise in doing your work; And glorify not yourself in the time of your distress. Better is he that labores, and abounds in all things, Than he that glorifieth himself, and lacketh bread. My son, glorify your soul in meekness, And give it honor according to the worthiness thereof. Who will justify him that sins against his own soul? And who will glorify him that dishonors his own life? A poor man is glorified for his knowledge; And a rich man is glorified for his riches. But he that is glorified in poverty, how much more in riches? And he that is inglorious in riches, how much more in poverty?

Oración matutina — segunda lectura

Lucas 15

Y SE llegaban á él todos los publicanos y pecadores á oirle. Y murmuraban los Fariseos y los escribas, diciendo: Este á los pecadores recibe, y con ellos come. Y él les propuso esta parábola, diciendo: ¿Qué hombre de vosotros, teniendo cien ovejas, si perdiere una de ellas, no deja las noventa y nueve en el desierto, y va á la que se perdió, hasta que la halle? Y hallada, la pone sobre sus hombros gozoso; Y viniendo á casa, junta á los amigos y á los vecinos, diciéndoles: Dadme el parabién, porque he hallado mi oveja que se había perdido. Os digo, que así habrá más gozo en el cielo de un pecador que se arrepiente, que de noventa y nueve justos, que no necesitan arrepentimiento. ¿O qué mujer que tiene diez dracmas, si perdiere una dracma, no enciende el candil, y barre la casa, y busca con diligencia hasta hallarla? Y cuando la hubiere hallado, junta las amigas y las vecinas, diciendo: Dadme el parabién, porque he hallado la dracma que había perdido. Así os digo que hay gozo delante de los ángeles de Dios por un pecador que se arrepiente. Y dijo: Un hombre tenía dos hijos; Y el menor de ellos dijo á su padre: Padre, dame la parte de la hacienda que me pertenece: y les repartió la hacienda. Y no muchos días después, juntándolo todo el hijo menor, partió lejos á una provincia apartada; y allí desperdició su hacienda viviendo perdidamente. Y cuando todo lo hubo malgastado, vino una grande hambre en aquella provincia, y comenzóle á faltar. Y fué y se llegó á uno de los ciudadanos de aquella tierra, el cual le envió á su hacienda para que apacentase los puercos. Y deseaba henchir su vientre de las algarrobas que comían los puercos; mas nadie se las daba. Y volviendo en sí, dijo: ¡Cuántos jornaleros en casa de mi padre tienen abundancia de pan, y yo aquí perezco de hambre! Me levantaré, é iré á mi padre, y le diré: Padre, he pecado contra el cielo y contra ti; Ya no soy digno de ser llamado tu hijo; hazme como á uno de tus jornaleros. Y levantándose, vino á su padre. Y como aun estuviese lejos, viólo su padre, y fué movido á misericordia, y corrió, y echóse sobre su cuello, y besóle. Y el hijo le dijo: Padre, he pecado contra el cielo, y contra ti, y ya no soy digno de ser llamado tu hijo. Mas el padre dijo á sus siervos: Sacad el principal vestido, y vestidle; y poned un anillo en su mano, y zapatos en sus pies. Y traed el becerro grueso, y matadlo, y comamos, y hagamos fiesta: Porque este mi hijo muerto era, y ha revivido; habíase perdido, y es hallado. Y comenzaron á regocijarse. Y su hijo el mayor estaba en el campo; el cual como vino, y llegó cerca de casa, oyó la sinfonía y las danzas; Y llamando á uno de los criados, preguntóle qué era aquello. Y él le dijo: Tu hermano ha venido; y tu padre ha muerto el becerro grueso, por haberle recibido salvo. Entonces se enojó, y no quería entrar. Salió por tanto su padre, y le rogaba que entrase. Mas él respondiendo, dijo al padre: He aquí tantos años te sirvo, no habiendo traspasado jamás tu mandamiento, y nunca me has dado un cabrito para gozarme con mis amigos: Mas cuando vino éste tu hijo, que ha consumido tu hacienda con rameras, has matado para él el becerro grueso. El entonces le dijo: Hijo, tú siempre estás conmigo, y todas mis cosas son tuyas. Mas era menester hacer fiesta y holgar nos, porque este tu hermano muerto era, y ha revivido; habíase perdido, y es hallado.

The wisdom of the lowly will lift up his head, And make him to sit in the midst of great men. Commend not a man for his beauty; And abhor not a man for his outward appearance. The bee is little among such as fly; And her fruit is the chief of sweetmeats. Glory not in the putting on of raiment, And exalt not yourself in the day of honor; For the works of the Lord are wonderful, And his works are hidden among men. Many kings have sat down upon the ground; And one that was never thought of has worn a diadem. Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; And men of renown have been delivered into other men’s hands. Blame not before you have examined: Understand first, and then rebuke. Answer not before you have heard; And interrupt not in the midst of speech. Strive not in a matter that concerns you not; And where sinners judge, sit not you with them. My son, be not busy about many matters: For if you meddle much, you will not be unpunished; And if you pursue, you will not overtake; And you will not escape by fleeing. There is one that toileth, and labores, and makes haste, And is so much the more behind. There is one that is sluggish, and has need of help, Lacking in strength, and that abounds in poverty; And the eyes of the Lord looked upon him for good, And he set him up from his low estate, And lifted up his head; And many marveled at him. Good things and evil, life and death, Poverty and riches, are from the Lord. The gift of the Lord remains with the godly, And his good pleasure will prosper forever. There is that waxes rich by his wariness and pinching, And this is the portion of his reward: When he says, I have found rest, And now will I eat of my goods; Yet he knows not what time will pass, And he will leave them to others, and die. Be stedfast in your covenant, and be conversant therein, And wax old in your work. Marvel not at the works of a sinner; But trust the Lord, and abide in your labor: For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord swiftly on the sudden to make a poor man rich. The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly; And in an hour that comes swiftly he makes his blessing to flourish. Say not, What use is there of me? And what from henceforth will my good things be? Say not, I have sufficient, And from henceforth what harm will happen to me? In the day of good things there is a forgetfulness of evil things; And in the day of evil things a man will not remember things that are good. For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord To reward a man in the day of death according to his ways. The affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of delight; And in the last end of a man is the revelation of his deeds. Call no man blessed before his death; And a man will be known in his children. Bring not every man into your house; For many are the plots of the deceitful man. As a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the heart of a proud man; And as one that is a spy, he looks upon your falling. For he lies in wait to turn things that are good into evil; And in things that are praiseworthy he will lay blame. From a spark of fire a heap of many coals is kindled; And a sinful man lies in wait for blood. Take heed of an evil-doer, for he contriveth wicked things; Lest haply he bring upon you blame forever. Receive a stranger into your house, and he will distract you with brawls, And estrange you from your own.

RESTA, hermanos, que os gocéis en el Señor. A mí, á la verdad, no es molesto el escribiros las mismas cosas, y para vosotros es seguro. Guardaos de los perros, guardaos de los malos obreros, guardaos del cortamiento. Porque nosotros somos la circuncisión, los que servimos en espíritu á Dios, y nos gloriamos en Cristo Jesús, no teniendo confianza en la carne. Aunque yo tengo también de qué confiar en la carne. Si alguno parece que tiene de qué confiar en la carne, yo más: Circuncidado al octavo día, del linaje de Israel, de la tribu de Benjamín, Hebreo de Hebreos; cuanto á la ley, Fariseo; Cuanto al celo, perseguidor de la iglesia; cuanto á la justicia que es en la ley, irreprensible. Pero las cosas que para mí eran ganancias, helas reputado pérdidas por amor de Cristo. Y ciertamente, aun reputo todas las cosas pérdida por el eminente conocimiento de Cristo Jesús, mi Señor, por amor del cual lo he perdido todo, y téngolo por estiércol, para ganar á Cristo, Y ser hallado en él, no teniendo mi justicia, que es por la ley, sino la que es por la fe de Cristo, la justicia que es de Dios por la fe; A fin de conocerle, y la virtud de su resurrección, y la participación de sus padecimientos, en conformidad á su muerte, Si en alguna manera llegase á la resurrección de los muertos. No que ya haya alcanzado, ni que ya sea perfecto; sino que prosigo, por ver si alcanzo aquello para lo cual fuí también alcanzado de Cristo Jesús. Hermanos, yo mismo no hago cuenta de haber lo ya alcanzado; pero una cosa hago: olvidando ciertamente lo que queda atrás, y extendiéndome á lo que está delante, Prosigo al blanco, al premio de la soberana vocación de Dios en Cristo Jesús. Así que, todos los que somos perfectos, esto mismo sintamos: y si otra cosa sentís, esto también os revelará Dios. Empero en aquello á que hemos llegado, vamos por la misma regla, sintamos una misma cosa. Hermanos, sed imitadores de mí, y mirad los que así anduvieren como nos tenéis por ejemplo. Porque muchos andan, de los cuales os dije muchas veces, y aun ahora lo digo llorando, que son enemigos de la cruz de Cristo: Cuyo fin será perdición, cuyo dios es el vientre, y su gloria es en confusión; que sienten lo terreno. Mas nuestra vivienda es en los cielos; de donde también esperamos al Salvador, al Señor Jesucristo; El cual transformará el cuerpo de nuestra bajeza, para ser semejante al cuerpo de su gloria, por la operación con la cual puede también sujetar á sí todas las cosas.
