Wisdom will praise herself, And will glory in the midst of her people. In the congregation of the Most High will she open her mouth, And glory in the presence of his power. I came forth from the mouth of the Most High, And covered the earth as a mist. I lived in high places, And my throne is in the pillar of the cloud. Alone I compassed the circuit of heaven, And walked in the depth of the abyss. In the waves of the sea, and in all the earth, And in every people and nation, I got a possession. With all these I sought rest; And in whose inheritance shall I lodge? Then the Creator of all things gave me a commandment; And he that created me made my tabernacle to rest, And said, Let your tabernacle be in Jacob, And your inheritance in Israel. He created me from the beginning before the world; And to the end I will not fail. In the holy tabernacle I ministered before him; And so was I established in Sion. In the beloved city likewise he gave me rest; And in Jerusalem was my authority. And I took root in a people that was glorified, Even in the portion of the Lord’s own inheritance. I was exalted like a cedar in Libanus, And as a cypress tree on the mountains of Hermon. I was exalted like a palm tree on the sea shore, And as rose plants in Jericho, And as a fair olive tree in the plain; And I was exalted as a plane tree. As cinnamon and aspalathus, I have given a scent of perfumes; And as choice myrrh, I spread abroad a pleasant odour; As galbanum, and onyx, and stacte, And as the fume of frankincense in the tabernacle. As the terebinth I stretched out my branches; And my branches are branches of glory and grace. As the vine I put forth grace; And my flowers are the fruit of glory and riches. Come to me, you⌃ that are desirous of me, And be you⌃ filled with my produce. For my memorial is sweeter than honey, And my inheritance than the honeycomb. They that eat me will yet be hungry; And those who drink me will yet be thirsty. He that obeys me will not be ashamed; And those who work in me will not do amiss. All these things are the book of the covenant of the Most High God, Even the law which Moses commanded us for a heritage to the assemblies of Jacob. It is he that makes wisdom abundant, as Pishon, And as Tigris in the days of new fruits; That makes understanding full as Euphrates, And as Jordan in the days of harvest; That makes instruction to shine forth as the light, As Gihon in the days of vintage. The first man knew her not perfectly; And in like manner the last has not traced her out. For her thoughts are filled from the sea, And her counsels from the great deep. And I came out as a stream from a river, And as a conduit into a garden. I said, I will water my garden, And will water abundantly my garden bed; And, behold, my stream became a river, And my river became a sea. I will yet bring instruction to light as the morning, And will make these things to shine forth afar off. I will yet pour out doctrine as prophecy, And leave it to generations of ages. Behold that I have not laboured for myself only, But for all those who diligently seek her.

Lucas 22

Y ESTABA cerca el día de la fiesta de los ázimos, que se llama la Pascua. Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas buscaban cómo le matarían; mas tenían miedo del pueblo. Y entró Satanás en Judas, por sobrenombre Iscariote, el cual era uno del número de los doce; Y fué, y habló con los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y con los magistrados, de cómo se lo entregaría. Los cuales se holgaron, y concertaron de darle dinero. Y prometió, y buscaba oportunidad para entregarle á ellos sin bulla. Y vino el día de los ázimos, en el cual era necesario matar la pascua. Y envió á Pedro y á Juan, diciendo: Id, aparejadnos la pascua para que comamos. Y ellos le dijeron: ¿Dónde quieres que aparejemos? Y él les dijo: He aquí cuando entrareis en la ciudad, os encontrará un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua: seguidle hasta la casa donde entrare, Y decid al padre de la familia de la casa: El Maestro te dice: ¿Dónde está el aposento donde tengo de comer la pascua con mis discípulos? Entonces él os mostrará un gran cenáculo aderezado; aparejad allí. Fueron pues, y hallaron como les había dicho; y aparejaron la pascua. Y como fué hora, sentóse á la mesa, y con él los apóstoles. Y les dijo: En gran manera he deseado comer con vosotros esta pascua antes que padezca; Porque os digo que no comeré más de ella, hasta que se cumpla en el reino de Dios. Y tomando el vaso, habiendo dado gracias, dijo: Tomad esto, y partidlo entre vosotros; Porque os digo, que no beberé más del fruto de la vid, hasta que el reino de Dios venga. Y tomando el pan, habiendo dado gracias, partió, y les dió, diciendo: Esto es mi cuerpo, que por vosotros es dado: haced esto en memoria de mí. Asimismo también el vaso, después que hubo cenado, diciendo: Este vaso es el nuevo pacto en mi sangre, que por vosotros se derrama. Con todo eso, he aquí la mano del que me entrega, conmigo en la mesa. Y á la verdad el Hijo del hombre va, según lo que está determinado; empero ¡ay de aquél hombre por el cual es entregado! Ellos entonces comenzaron á preguntar entre sí, cuál de ellos sería el que había de hacer esto. Y hubo entre ellos una contienda, quién de ellos parecía ser el mayor. Entonces él les dijo: Los reyes de las gentes se enseñorean de ellas; y los que sobre ellas tienen potestad, son llamados bienhechores: Mas vosotros, no así: antes el que es mayor entre vosotros, sea como el más mozo; y el que es príncipe, como el que sirve. Porque, ¿cuál es mayor, el que se sienta á la mesa, ó el que sirve? ¿No es el que se sienta á la mesa? Y yo soy entre vosotros como el que sirve. Empero vosotros sois los que habéis permanecido conmigo en mis tentaciones: Yo pues os ordeno un reino, como mi Padre me lo ordenó á mí, Para que comáis y bebáis en mi mesa en mi reino, y os sentéis sobre tronos juzgando á las doce tribus de Israel. Dijo también el Señor: Simón, Simón, he aquí Satanás os ha pedido para zarandaros como á trigo; Mas yo he rogado por ti que tu fe no falte: y tú, una vez vuelto, confirma á tus hermanos. Y él le dijo: Señor, pronto estoy á ir contigo aun á cárcel y á muerte. Y él dijo: Pedro, te digo que el gallo no cantará hoy antes que tú niegues tres veces que me conoces. Y á ellos dijo: Cuando os envié sin bolsa, y sin alforja, y sin zapatos, ¿os faltó algo? Y ellos dijeron: Nada. Y les dijo: Pues ahora, el que tiene bolsa, tómela, y también la alforja, y el que no tiene, venda su capa y compre espada. Porque os digo, que es necesario que se cumpla todavía en mí aquello que está escrito: Y con los malos fué contado: porque lo que está escrito de mí, cumplimiento tiene. Entonces ellos dijeron: Señor, he aquí dos espadas. Y él les dijo: Basta. Y saliendo, se fué, como solía, al monte de las Olivas; y sus discípulos también le siguieron. Y como llegó á aquel lugar, les dijo: Orad que no entréis en tentación. Y él se apartó de ellos como un tiro de piedra; y puesto de rodillas oró, Diciendo: Padre, si quieres, pasa este vaso de mí; empero no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya. Y le apareció un ángel del cielo confortándole. Y estando en agonía, oraba más intensamente: y fué su sudor como grandes gotas de sangre que caían hasta la tierra. Y como se levantó de la oración, y vino á sus discípulos, hallólos durmiendo de tristeza; Y les dijo: ¿Por qué dormís? Levantaos, y orad que no entréis en tentación. Estando él aún hablando, he aquí una turba; y el que se llamaba Judas, uno de los doce, iba delante de ellos; y llegóse á Jesús para besarlo. Entonces Jesús le dijo: Judas, ¿con beso entregas al Hijo del hombre? Y viendo los que estaban con él lo que había de ser, le dijeron: Señor, ¿heriremos á cuchillo? Y uno de ellos hirió á un siervo del príncipe de los sacerdotes, y le quitó la oreja derecha. Entonces respondiendo Jesús, dijo: Dejad hasta aquí. Y tocando su oreja, le sanó. Y Jesús dijo á los que habían venido á él, los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los magistrados del templo, y los ancianos: ¿Como á ladrón habéis salido con espadas y con palos? Habiendo estado con vosotros cada día en el templo, no extendisteis las manos contra mí; mas ésta es vuestra hora, y la potestad de las tinieblas. Y prendiéndole trajéronle, y metiéronle en casa del príncipe de los sacerdotes. Y Pedro le seguía de lejos. Y habiendo encendido fuego en medio de la sala, y sentándose todos alrededor, se sentó también Pedro entre ellos. Y como una criada le vió que estaba sentado al fuego, fijóse en él, y dijo: Y éste con él estaba. Entonces él lo negó, diciendo: Mujer, no le conozco. Y un poco después, viéndole otro, dijo: Y tú de ellos eras. Y Pedro dijo: Hombre, no soy. Y como una hora pasada otro afirmaba, diciendo: Verdaderamente también éste estaba con él, porque es Galileo. Y Pedro dijo: Hombre, no sé qué dices. Y luego, estando él aún hablando, el gallo cantó. Entonces, vuelto el Señor, miró á Pedro: y Pedro se acordó de la palabra del Señor como le había dicho: Antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces. Y saliendo fuera Pedro, lloró amargamente. Y los hombres que tenían á Jesús, se burlaban de él hiriéndole; Y cubriéndole, herían su rostro, y preguntábanle, diciendo: Profetiza quién es el que te hirió. Y decían otras muchas cosas injuriándole. Y cuando fué de día, se juntaron los ancianos del pueblo, y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, y le trajeron á su concilio, Diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Cristo? dínos lo. Y les dijo: Si os lo dijere, no creeréis; Y también si os preguntare, no me responderéis, ni me soltaréis: Mas después de ahora el Hijo del hombre se asentará á la diestra de la potencia de Dios. Y dijeron todos: ¿Luego tú eres Hijo de Dios? Y él les dijo: Vosotros decís que yo soy. Entonces ellos dijeron: ¿Qué más testimonio deseamos? porque nosotros lo hemos oído de su boca.

In three things I was beautified, And stood up beautiful before the Lord and men: The concord of kindred, and friendship of neighbors, And a woman and her husband that walk together in agreement. But three sorts of men my soul hates, And I am greatly offended at their life: A poor man that is haughty, and a rich man that is a liar, And an old man that is an adulterer lacking understanding. In your youth you have not gathered, And how should you find in your old age? How beautiful a thing is judgement for gray hairs, And for elders to know counsel! How beautiful is the wisdom of old men, And thought and counsel to men that are in honor! Much experience is the crown of old men; And their glorying is the fear of the Lord. There be nine things that I have thought of, and in my heart counted happy; And the tenth I will utter with my tongue: A man that has joy of his children; A man that lives and looks upon the fall of his enemies: Happy is he that dwells with a wife of understanding; And he that has not slipped with his tongue; And he that has not served a man that is unworthy of him: Happy is he that has found prudence; And he that discourseth in the ears of those who listen. How great is he that has found wisdom! Yet is there none above him that fears the Lord. The fear of the Lord passes all things: He that holds it, to whom shall he be likened? Give me any plague but the plague of the heart; And any wickedness but the wickedness of a woman; Any calamity, but a calamity from those who hate me; And any vengeance, but the vengeance of enemies. There is no head above the head of a serpent; And there is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy. I will rather dwell with a lion and a dragon, Than keep house with a wicked woman. The wickedness of a woman changes her look, And darkens her countenance as a bear does. Her husband will sit at meat among his neighbors, And when he hears it he sighs bitterly. All malice is but little to the malice of a woman: Let the portion of a sinner fall on her. As the going up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, So is a wife full of words to a quiet man. Throw not yourself upon the beauty of a woman; And desire not a woman for her beauty. There is anger, and impudence, and great reproach, If a woman maintain her husband. A wicked woman is abasement of heart, And sadness of countenance, and a wounded heart: A woman that will not make her husband happy Is as hands that hang down, and palsied knees. From a woman was the beginning of sin; And because of her we all die. Give not water an outlet; Neither to a wicked woman freedom of speech. If she go not as you would have her, Cut her off from your flesh.

PORQUE, hermanos, vosotros mismos sabéis que nuestra entrada á vosotros no fué vana: Pues aun habiendo padecido antes, y sido afrentados en Filipos, como sabéis, tuvimos denuedo en Dios nuestro para anunciaros el evangelio de Dios con gran combate. Porque nuestra exhortación no fué de error, ni de inmundicia, ni por engaño; Sino según fuimos aprobados de Dios para que se nos encargase el evangelio, así hablamos; no como los que agradan á los hombres, sino á Dios, el cual prueba nuestros corazones. Porque nunca fuimos lisonjeros en la palabra, como sabéis, ni tocados de avaricia; Dios es testigo; Ni buscamos de los hombres gloria, ni de vosotros, ni de otros, aunque podíamos seros carga como apóstoles de Cristo. Antes fuimos blandos entre vosotros como la que cría, que regala á sus hijos: Tan amadores de vosotros, que quisiéramos entregaros no sólo el evangelio de Dios, mas aun nuestras propias almas; porque nos erais carísimos. Porque ya, hermanos, os acordáis de nuestro trabajo y fatiga: que trabajando de noche y de día por no ser gravosos á ninguno de vosotros, os predicamos el evangelio de Dios. Vosotros sois testigos, y Dios, de cuán santa y justa é irreprensiblemente nos condujimos con vosotros que creísteis: Así como sabéis de qué modo exhortábamos y consolábamos á cada uno de vosotros, como el padre á sus hijos, Y os protestábamos que anduvieseis como es digno de Dios, que os llamó á su reino y gloria. Por lo cual, también nosotros damos gracias á Dios sin cesar, de que habiendo recibido la palabra de Dios que oísteis de nosotros, recibisteis no palabra de hombres, sino según es en verdad, la palabra de Dios, el cual obra en vosotros los que creísteis. Porque vosotros, hermanos, habéis sido imitadores de las iglesias de Dios en Cristo Jesús que están en Judea; pues habéis padecido también vosotros las mismas cosas de los de vuestra propia nación, como también ellos de los Judíos; Los cuales aun mataron al Señor Jesús y á sus propios profetas, y á nosotros nos han perseguido; y no agradan á Dios, y se oponen á todos los hombres; Prohibiéndonos hablar á los Gentiles, á fin de que se salven, para henchir la medida de sus pecados siempre: pues vino sobre ellos la ira hasta el extremo. Mas nosotros, hermanos, privados de vosotros por un poco de tiempo, de vista, no de corazón, tanto más procuramos con mucho deseo ver vuestro rostro. Por lo cual quisimos ir á vosotros, yo Pablo á la verdad, una vez y otra; mas Satanás nos embarazó. Porque ¿cuál es nuestra esperanza, ó gozo, ó corona de que me gloríe? ¿No sois vosotros, delante de nuestro Señor Jesucristo en su venida? Que vosotros sois nuestra gloria y gozo.
