Desire not a multitude of unprofitable children, Neither delight in ungodly sons. If they multiply, delight not in them, Except the fear of the Lord be with them. Trust not you in their life, Neither rely on their condition: For one is better than a thousand; And to die childless than to have ungodly children. For from one that has understanding will a city be peopled; But a race of wicked men will be made desolate. Many such things I have seen with my eyes; And my ear has heard mightier things than these. In the congregation of sinners will a fire be kindled; And in a disobedient nation wrath is kindled. He was not pacified toward the giants of old time, Who revolted in their strength. He spared not those with whom Lot sojourned, Whom he abhorred for their pride. He pitied not the people of perdition, Who were taken away in their sins. And in like manner the six hundred thousand footmen, Who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts. Even if there be one stiff-necked person, It is marvel if he will be unpunished: For mercy and wrath are with him; He is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath. As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: He judges a man according to his works. The sinner will not escape with his plunder; And the perseverance of the godly will not be frustrated. He will make room for every work of mercy; Each man will find according to his works. Don’t say, I shall be hidden from the Lord; And who will remember me from on high? I will not be known among so many people; For what is my soul in a boundless creation? Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, The deep, and the earth, will be moved when he shall visit. The mountains and the foundations of the earth together Are shaken with trembling, when he looks upon them. And no heart will think upon these things: And who shall conceive his ways? And there is a tempest which no man will see; Yes, the more part of his works are hid. Who will declare the works of his righteousness? Or who will endure them? For his covenant is afar off. He that is lacking in understanding thinks upon these things; And an unwise and erring man thinks follies. My son, hearken to me, and learn knowledge, And give heed to my words with your heart. I will show forth instruction by weight, And declare knowledge exactly. In the judgement of the Lord are his works from the beginning; And from the making of them he disposed the parts thereof. He garnished his works forever, And the beginnings of them to their generations: They neither hunger, nor are weary, And they cease not from their works. No one thrusteth aside his neighbor; And they will never disobey his word. After this also the Lord looked upon the earth, And filled it with his blessings. All manner of living things covered the face thereof; And into it is their return.

Oración matutina — segunda lectura

Lucas 18

Y PROPUSOLES también una parábola sobre que es necesario orar siempre, y no desmayar, Diciendo: Había un juez en una ciudad, el cual ni temía á Dios, ni respetaba á hombre. Había también en aquella ciudad una viuda, la cual venía á él diciendo: Hazme justicia de mi adversario. Pero él no quiso por algún tiempo; mas después de esto dijo dentro de sí: Aunque ni temo á Dios, ni tengo respeto á hombre, Todavía, porque esta viuda me es molesta, le haré justicia, porque al fin no venga y me muela. Y dijo el Señor: Oid lo que dice el juez injusto. ¿Y Dios no hará justicia á sus escogidos, que claman á él día y noche, aunque sea longánime acerca de ellos? Os digo que los defenderá presto. Empero cuando el Hijo del hombre viniere, ¿hallará fe en la tierra? Y dijo también á unos que confiaban de sí como justos, y menospreciaban á los otros, esta parábola: Dos hombres subieron al templo á orar: el uno Fariseo, el otro publicano. El Fariseo, en pie, oraba consigo de esta manera: Dios, te doy gracias, que no soy como los otros hombres, ladrones, injustos, adúlteros, ni aun como este publicano; Ayuno dos veces á la semana, doy diezmos de todo lo que poseo. Mas el publicano estando lejos no quería ni aun alzar los ojos al cielo, sino que hería su pecho, diciendo: Dios, sé propició á mí pecador. Os digo que éste descendió á su casa justificado antes que el otro; porque cualquiera que se ensalza, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será ensalzado. Y traían á él los niños para que los tocase; lo cual viendo los discípulos les reñían. Mas Jesús llamándolos, dijo: Dejad los niños venir á mí, y no los impidáis; porque de tales es el reino de Dios. De cierto os digo, que cualquiera que no recibiere el reino de Dios como un niño, no entrará en él. Y preguntóle un príncipe, diciendo: Maestro bueno, ¿qué haré para poseer la vida eterna? Y Jesús le dijo: ¿Por qué me llamas bueno? ninguno hay bueno sino sólo Dios. Los mandamientos sabes: No matarás: No adulterarás: No hurtarás: No dirás falso testimonio: Honra á tu padre y á tu madre. Y él dijo: Todas estas cosas he guardado desde mi juventud. Y Jesús, oído esto, le dijo: Aun te falta una cosa: vende todo lo que tienes, y da á los pobres, y tendrás tesoro en el cielo; y ven, sígueme. Entonces él, oídas estas cosas, se puso muy triste, porque era muy rico. Y viendo Jesús que se había entristecido mucho, dijo: ¡Cuán dificultosamente entrarán en el reino de Dios los que tienen riquezas! Porque más fácil cosa es entrar un camello por el ojo de una aguja, que un rico entrar en el reino de Dios. Y los que lo oían, dijeron: ¿Y quién podrá ser salvo? Y él les dijo: Lo que es imposible para con los hombres, posible es para Dios. Entonces Pedro dijo: He aquí, nosotros hemos dejado las posesiones nuestras, y te hemos seguido. Y él les dijo: De cierto os digo, que nadie hay que haya dejado casa, padres, ó hermanos, ó mujer, ó hijos, por el reino de Dios, Que no haya de recibir mucho más en este tiempo, y en el siglo venidero la vida eterna. Y Jesús, tomando á los doce, les dijo: He aquí subimos á Jerusalem, y serán cumplidas todas las cosas que fueron escritas por los profetas, del Hijo del hombre. Porque será entregado á las gentes, y será escarnecido, é injuriado, y escupido. Y después que le hubieren azotado, le matarán: mas al tercer día resucitará. Pero ellos nada de estas cosas entendían, y esta palabra les era encubierta, y no entendían lo que se decía. Y aconteció que acercándose él á Jericó, un ciego estaba sentado junto al camino mendigando; El cual como oyó la gente que pasaba, preguntó qué era aquello. Y dijéronle que pasaba Jesús Nazareno. Entonces dió voces, diciendo: Jesús, Hijo de David, ten misericordia de mí. Y los que iban delante, le reñían que callase; mas él clamaba mucho más: Hijo de David, ten misericordia de mí. Jesús entonces parándose, mandó traerle á sí: y como él llegó, le preguntó, Diciendo: ¿Qué quieres que te haga? Y él dijo: Señor, que vea. Y Jesús le dijo: Ve, tu fe te ha hecho salvo. Y luego vió, y le seguía, glorificando á Dios: y todo el pueblo como lo vió, dió á Dios alabanza.

The Lord created man of the earth, And turned him back to it again. He gave them days by number, and a set time, And gave them authority over the things that are thereon. He endued them with strength proper to them; And made them according to his own image. He put the fear of man upon all flesh, And gave him to have dominion over beasts and fowls. Counsel, and tongue, and eyes, Ears, and heart, gave he them to understand withal. He filled them with the knowledge of wisdom, And showed them good and evil. He set his eye upon their hearts, To show them the majesty of his works. And they will praise the name of his holiness, That they may declare the majesty of his works. He added to them knowledge, And gave them a law of life for a heritage. He made an everlasting covenant with them, And showed them his judgements. Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory; And their ear heard the glory of his voice. And he said to them, Beware of all unrighteousness; And he gave them commandment, each man concerning his neighbor. Their ways are ever before him; They will not be hid from his eyes. For every nation he appointed a ruler; And Israel is the Lord’s portion. All their works are as the sun before him; And his eyes are continually upon their ways. Their iniquities are not hid from him; And all their sins are before the Lord. With him the alms of a man is as a signet; And he will keep the bounty of a man as the apple of the eye. Afterwards he will rise up and recompense them, And render their recompense upon their head. Howbeit to those who repent he granteth a return; And he comforteth those who are losing patience. Return to the Lord, and forsake sins: Make your prayer before his face, and lessen the offence. Turn again to the Most High, and turn away from iniquity; And greatly hate the abominable thing. Who will give praise to the Most High in the grave, Instead of them which live and return thanks? Thanksgiving perishes from the dead, as from one that is not: He that is in life and health will praise the Lord. How great is the mercy of the Lord, And his forgiveness to those who turn to him! For all things can’t be in men, Because the son of man is not immortal. What is brighter than the sun? yet this fails: And an evil man will think on flesh and blood. He looks upon the power of the height of heaven: And all men are earth and ashes.

Colosenses 2

PORQUE quiero que sepáis cuán gran solicitud tengo por vosotros, y por los que están en Laodicea, y por todos los que nunca vieron mi rostro en carne; Para que sean confortados sus corazones, unidos en amor, y en todas riquezas de cumplido entendimiento para conocer el misterio de Dios, y del Padre, y de Cristo; En el cual están escondidos todos los tesoros de sabiduría y conocimiento. Y esto digo, para que nadie os engañe con palabras persuasivas. Porque aunque estoy ausente con el cuerpo, no obstante con el espíritu estoy con vosotros, gozándome y mirando vuestro concierto, y la firmeza de vuestra fe en Cristo. Por tanto, de la manera que habéis recibido al Señor Jesucristo, andad en él: Arraigados y sobreedificados en él, y confirmados en la fe, así como habéis aprendido, creciendo en ella con hacimiento de gracias. Mirad que ninguno os engañe por filosofías y vanas sustilezas, según las tradiciones de los hombres, conforme á los elementos del mundo, y no según Cristo: Porque en él habita toda la plenitud de la divinidad corporalmente: Y en él estáis cumplidos, el cual es la cabeza de todo principado y potestad: En el cual también sois circuncidados de circuncisión no hecha con manos, con el despojamiento del cuerpo de los pecados de la carne, en la circuncisión de Cristo; Sepultados juntamente con él en la bautismo, en el cual también resucitasteis con él, por la fe de la operación de Dios que le levantó de los muertos. Y á vosotros, estando muertos en pecados y en la incircuncisión de vuestra carne, os vivificó juntamente con él, perdonándoos todos los pecados, Rayendo la cédula de los ritos que nos era contraria, que era contra nosotros, quitándola de en medio y enclavándola en la cruz; Y despojando los principados y las potestades, sacólos á la vergüenza en público, triunfando de ellos en sí mismo. Por tanto, nadie os juzgue en comida, ó en bebida, ó en parte de día de fiesta, ó de nueva luna, ó de sábados: Lo cual es la sombra de lo por venir; mas el cuerpo es de Cristo. Nadie os prive de vuestro premio, afectando humildad y culto á los ángeles, metiéndose en lo que no ha visto, vanamente hinchado en el sentido de su propia carne, Y no teniendo la cabeza, de la cual todo el cuerpo, alimentado y conjunto por las ligaduras y conjunturas, crece en aumento de Dios. Pues si sois muertos con Cristo cuanto á los rudimentos del mundo, ¿por qué como si vivieseis al mundo, os sometéis á ordenanzas, Tales como, No manejes, ni gustes, ni aun toques, (Las cuales cosas son todas para destrucción en el uso mismo), en conformidad á mandamientos y doctrinas de hombres? Tales cosas tienen á la verdad cierta reputación de sabiduría en culto voluntario, y humildad, y en duro trato del cuerpo; no en alguna honra para el saciar de la carne.
