He that lives forever created all things in common. The Lord alone will be justified. To none has he given power to declare his works: And who will trace out his mighty deeds? Who shall number the strength of his majesty? And who shall also tell out his mercies? As for the wondrous works of the Lord, it is not possible to take from them nor add to them, Neither is it possible to track them out. When a man has finished, then he is but at the beginning; And when he ceaseth, then will he be in perplexity. What is man, and whereto serves he? What is his good, and what is his evil? The number of man’s days at the most are a hundred years. As a drop of water from the sea, and a pebble from the sand; So are a few years in the day of eternity. For this cause the Lord was longsuffering over them, And poured out his mercy upon them. He saw and perceived their end, that it is evil; Therefore he multiplied his forgiveness. The mercy of a man is upon his neighbor; But the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh; Reproving, and chastening, and teaching, And bringing again, as a shepherd does his flock. He has mercy on those who accept chastening, And that diligently seek after his judgements. My son, to your good deeds add no blemish; And no grief of words in any of your giving. Shall not the dew assuage the scorching heat? So is a word better than a gift. Behold, is not a word better than a gift? And both are with a gracious man. A fool will upbrade ungraciously; And the gift of an envious man consumes the eyes. Learn before you speak; And have a care of your health or ever you be sick. Before judgement examine yourself; And in the hour of visitation you will find forgiveness. Humble yourself before you be sick; And in the time of sins show repentance. Let nothing hinder you to pay your vow in due time; And wait not until death to be justified. Before you make a vow, prepare yourself; And be not as a man that tempts the Lord. Think upon the wrath that will be in the days of the end, And the time of vengeance, when he turns away his face. In the days of fulness remember the time of hunger, And poverty and lack in the days of wealth. From morning until evening the time changes; And all things are speedy before the Lord. A wise man will fear in everything; And in days of sinning he will beware of offence. Every man of understanding knows wisdom; And he will give thanks to him that found her. They that were of understanding in sayings became also wise themselves, And poured forth apt proverbs. Go not after your lusts; And refrain yourself from your appetites. If you give fully to your soul the delight of her desire, She will make you the laughing stock of your enemies. Make not merry in much luxury; Neither be tied to the expense thereof. Be not made a beggar by banqueting upon borrowing, When you have nothing in your purse.

Lucas 19

Y HABIENDO entrado Jesús, iba pasando por Jericó; Y he aquí un varón llamado Zaqueo, el cual era el principal de los publicanos, y era rico; Y procuraba ver á Jesús quién fuese; mas no podía á causa de la multitud, porque era pequeño de estatura. Y corriendo delante, subióse á un árbol sicómoro para verle; porque había de pasar por allí. Y como vino á aquel lugar Jesús, mirando, le vió, y díjole: Zaqueo, date priesa, desciende, porque hoy es necesario que pose en tu casa. Entonces él descendió apriesa, y le recibió gozoso. Y viendo esto, todos murmuraban, diciendo que había entrado á posar con un hombre pecador. Entonces Zaqueo, puesto en pie, dijo al Señor: He aquí, Señor, la mitad de mis bienes doy á los pobres; y si en algo he defraudado á alguno, lo vuelvo con el cuatro tanto. Y Jesús le dijo: Hoy ha venido la salvación á esta casa; por cuanto él también es hijo de Abraham. Porque el Hijo del hombre vino á buscar y á salvar lo que se había perdido. Y oyendo ellos estas cosas, prosiguió Jesús y dijo una parábola, por cuanto estaba cerca de Jerusalem, y porque pensaban que luego había de ser manifestado el reino de Dios. Dijo pues: Un hombre noble partió á una provincia lejos, para tomar para sí un reino, y volver. Mas llamados diez siervos suyos, les dió diez minas, y díjoles: Negociad entre tanto que vengo. Empero sus ciudadanos le aborrecían, y enviaron tras de él una embajada, diciendo: No queremos que éste reine sobre nosotros. Y aconteció, que vuelto él, habiendo tomado el reino, mandó llamar á sí á aquellos siervos á los cuales había dado el dinero, para saber lo que había negociado cada uno. Y vino el primero, diciendo: Señor, tu mina ha ganado diez minas. Y él le dice: Está bien, buen siervo; pues que en lo poco has sido fiel, tendrás potestad sobre diez ciudades. Y vino otro, diciendo: Señor, tu mina ha hecho cinco minas. Y también á éste dijo: Tú también sé sobre cinco ciudades. Y vino otro, diciendo: Señor, he aquí tu mina, la cual he tenido guardada en un pañizuelo: Porque tuve miedo de ti, que eres hombre recio; tomas lo que no pusiste, y siegas lo que no sembraste. Entonces él le dijo: Mal siervo, de tu boca te juzgo. Sabías que yo era hombre recio, que tomo lo que no puse, y que siego lo que no sembré; ¿Por qué, no diste mi dinero al banco, y yo viniendo lo demandara con el logro? Y dijo á los que estaban presentes: Quitadle la mina, y dadla al que tiene las diez minas. Y ellos le dijeron: Señor, tiene diez minas. Pues yo os digo que á cualquiera que tuviere, le será dado; mas al que no tuviere, aun lo que tiene le será quitado. Y también á aquellos mis enemigos que no querían que yo reinase sobre ellos, traedlos acá, y degolladlos delante de mí. Y dicho esto, iba delante subiendo á Jerusalem. Y aconteció, que llegando cerca de Bethfagé, y de Bethania, al monte que se llama de las Olivas, envió dos de sus discípulos, Diciendo: Id á la aldea de enfrente; en la cual como entrareis, hallaréis un pollino atado, en el que ningún hombre se ha sentado jamás; desatadlo, y traedlo. Y si alguien os preguntare, ¿por qué lo desatáis? le responderéis así: Porque el Señor lo ha menester. Y fueron los que habían sido enviados, y hallaron como les dijo. Y desatando ellos el pollino, sus dueños les dijeron: ¿Por qué desatáis el pollino? Y ellos dijeron: Porque el Señor lo ha menester. Y trajéronlo á Jesús; y habiéndo echado sus vestidos sobre el pollino, pusieron á Jesús encima. Y yendo él tendían sus capas por el camino. Y como llegasen ya cerca de la bajada del monte de las Olivas, toda la multitud de los discípulos, gozándose, comenzaron á alabar á Dios á gran voz por todas las maravillas que habían visto, Diciendo: ¡Bendito el rey que viene en el nombre del Señor: paz en el cielo, y gloria en lo altísimo! Entonces algunos de los Fariseos de la compañía, le dijeron: Maestro, reprende á tus discípulos. Y él respondiendo, les dijo: Os digo que si éstos callaren, las piedras clamarán. Y como llegó cerca viendo la ciudad, lloró sobre ella, Diciendo: ¡Oh si también tú conocieses, á lo menos en este tu día, lo que toca á tu paz! mas ahora está encubierto de tus ojos. Porque vendrán días sobre ti, que tus enemigos te cercarán con baluarte, y te pondrán cerco, y de todas partes te pondrán en estrecho, Y te derribarán á tierra, y á tus hijos dentro de ti; y no dejarán sobre ti piedra sobre piedra; por cuanto no conociste el tiempo de tu visitación. Y entrando en el templo, comenzó á echar fuera á todos los que vendían y compraban en él. Diciéndoles: Escrito está: Mi casa, casa de oración es; mas vosotros la habéis hecho cueva de ladrones. Y enseñaba cada día en el templo; mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, y los principales del pueblo procuraban matarle. Y no hallaban qué hacerle, porque todo el pueblo estaba suspenso oyéndole.

A workman that is a drunkard will not become rich: He that despises small things will fall by little and little. Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away: And he that cleaves to harlots will be the more reckless. Moths and worms will have him to heritage; And a reckless soul will be taken away. He that is hasty to trust is light-minded; And he that sins will offend against his own soul. He that makes merry in his heart will be condemned: And he that hates talk has the less wickedness. Never repeat what is told you, And you will fare never the worse. Whether it be of friend or foe, tell it not; And unless it is a sin to you, reveal it not. For he has heard you, and observed you, And when the time comes he will hate you. Hast you heard a word? let it die with you: Be of good courage, it will not burst you. A fool will travail in pain with a word, As a woman in labor with a child. As an arrow that sticks in the flesh of the thigh, So is a word in a fool’s belly. Reprove a friend; it may be he did it not: And if he did something, that he may do it no more. Reprove your neighbor; it may be he said it not: And if he has said it, that he may not say it again. Reprove a friend; for many times there is slander: And trust not every word. There is one that slips, and not from the heart: And who is he that has not sinned with his tongue? Reprove your neighbor before you threaten him; And give place to the law of the Most High. All wisdom is the fear of the Lord; And in all wisdom is the doing of the law. And the knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom; And the prudence of sinners is not counsel. There is a wickedness, and the same is abomination; And there is a fool lacking in wisdom. Better is one that has small understanding, and fears, Than one that has much prudence, and transgresses the law. There is an exquisite subtlety, and the same is unjust; And there is one that perverteth favor to gain a judgement. There is one that does wickedly, that hangs down his head with mourning; But inwardly he is full of deceit, Bowing down his face, and making as if he were deaf of one ear: Where he is not known, he will be beforehand with you. And if for lack of power he be hindered from sinning, If he find opportunity, he will do mischief. A man will be known by his look, And one that has understanding will be known by his face, when you meet him. A man’s attire, and grinning laughter, And gait, show what he is.

Colosenses 3

SI habéis pues resucitado con Cristo, buscad las cosas de arriba, donde está Cristo sentado á la diestra de Dios. Poned la mira en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra. Porque muertos sois, y vuestra vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios. Cuando Cristo, vuestra vida, se manifestare, entonces vosotros también seréis manifestados con él en gloria. Amortiguad, pues, vuestros miembros que están sobre la tierra: fornicación, inmundicia, molicie, mala concupiscencia, y avaricia, que es idolatría: Por las cuales cosas la ira de Dios viene sobre los hijos de rebelión. En las cuales vosotros también anduvisteis en otro tiempo viviendo en ellas. Mas ahora, dejad también vosotros todas estas cosas: ira, enojo, malicia, maledicencia, torpes palabras de vuestra boca. No mintáis los unos á los otros, habiéndoos despojado del viejo hombre con sus hechos, Y revestídoos del nuevo, el cual por el conocimiento es renovado conforme á la imagen del que lo crió; Donde no hay Griego ni Judío, circuncisión ni incircuncisión, bárbaro ni Scytha, siervo ni libre; mas Cristo es el todo, y en todos. Vestíos pues, como escogidos de Dios, santos y amados, de entrañas de misericordia, de benignidad, de humildad, de mansedumbre, de tolerancia; Sufriéndoos los unos á los otros, y perdonándoos los unos á los otros si alguno tuviere queja del otro: de la manera que Crito os perdonó, así también hacedlo vosotros. Y sobre todas estas cosas vestíos de caridad, la cual es el vínculo de la perfección. Y la paz de Dios gobierne en vuestros corazones, á la cual asimismo sois llamados en un cuerpo; y sed agradecidos. La palabra de Cristo habite en vosotros en abundancia en toda sabiduría, enseñándoos y exhortándoos los unos á los otros con salmos é himnos y canciones espirituales, con gracia cantando en vuestros corazones al Señor. Y todo lo que hacéis, sea de palabra, ó de hecho, hacedlo todo en el nombre del Señor Jesús, dando gracias á Dios Padre por él. Casadas, estad sujetas á vuestros maridos, como conviene en el Señor. Maridos, amad á vuestras mujeres, y no seáis desapacibles con ellas. Hijos, obedeced á vuestros padres en todo; porque esto agrada al Señor. Padres, no irritéis á vuestros hijos, porque no se hagan de poco ánimo. Siervos, obedeced en todo á vuestros amos carnales, no sirviendo al ojo, como los que agradan á los hombres, sino con sencillez de corazón, temiendo á Dios: Y todo lo que hagáis, hacedlo de ánimo, como al Señor, y no á los hombres; Sabiendo que del Señor recibiréis la compensación de la herencia: porque al Señor Cristo servís. Mas el que hace injuria, recibirá la injuria que hiciere; que no hay acepción de personas.
