I will give thanks to you, O Lord, O King, And will praise you, O God my Saviour: I do give thanks to your name: For you were my protector and helper, And did deliver my body out of destruction, And out of the snare of a slanderous tongue, From lips that forge lies, And was my helper before those who stood by; And did deliver me, according to the abundance of your mercy, and greatness of your name, From the gnashings of teeth ready to devour, Out of the hand of such as sought my life, Out of the manifold afflictions which I had; From the choking of a fire on every side, And out of the midst of fire which I kindled not; Out of the depth of the belly of the grave, And from an unclean tongue, And from lying words, The slander of an unrighteous tongue to the king. My soul drew near even to death, And my life was near to the grave beneath. They compassed me on every side, And there was none to help me. I was looking for the succour of men, And it was not. And I remembered your mercy, O Lord, And your working which has been from everlasting, How you deliver those who wait for you, And save them out of the hand of the enemies. And I lifted up my supplication from the earth, And prayed for deliverance from death. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, That he would not forsake me in the days of affliction, In the time when there was no help against the proud. I will praise your name continually, And will sing praise with thanksgiving; And my supplication was heard: For you saved me from destruction, And delivered me from the evil time: Therefore will I give thanks and praise to you, And bless the name of the Lord. When I was yet young, Or ever I went abroad, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. Before the temple I asked for her, And I will seek her out even to the end. From her flower as from the ripening grape my heart delighted in her: My foot trod in uprightness, From my youth I tracked her out. I bowed down my ear a little, and received her, And found for myself much instruction. I profited in her: To him that gives me wisdom I will give glory. For I purposed to practice her, And I was zealous for that which is good; And I shall never be put to shame. My soul has wrestled in her, And in my doing I was exact: I spread forth my hands to the heaven above, And bewailed my ignorances of her. I set my soul aright to her, And in pureness I found her. I got me a heart joined with her from the beginning: Therefore shall I not be forsaken. My inward part also was troubled to seek her: Therefore I have gotten a good possession. The Lord gave me a tongue for my reward; And I will praise him therewith. Draw near to me, you⌃ unlearned, And lodge in the house of instruction. Say, wherefore are you⌃ lacking in these things, And your souls are very thirsty? I opened my mouth, and spoke, Get her for yourselves without money. Put your neck under the yoke, And let your soul receive instruction: She is hard at hand to find. Behold with your eyes, How that I laboured but a little, And found for myself much rest. Get you instruction with a great sum of silver, And gain much gold by her. May your soul rejoice in his mercy, And may you⌃ not be put to shame in praising him. Work your work before the time comes, And in his time he will give you your reward.

Oração da manhã — segunda leitura

João 11

Estava, porém, enfermo um certo Lázaro, de betânia, aldeia de Maria e de sua irmã Marta. E Maria era aquela que tinha ungido o Senhor com ungüento, e lhe tinha enxugado os pés com os seus cabelos, cujo irmão Lázaro estava enfermo. Mandaram-lhe, pois, suas irmãs dizer: Senhor, eis que está enfermo aquele que tu amas. E Jesus, ouvindo isto, disse: Esta enfermidade não é para morte, mas para glória de Deus, para que o Filho de Deus seja glorificado por ela. Ora, Jesus amava a Marta, e a sua irmã, e a Lázaro. Ouvindo, pois, que estava enfermo, ficou ainda dois dias no lugar onde estava. Depois disto, disse aos seus discípulos: Vamos outra vez para a Judéia. Disseram-lhe os discípulos: Rabi, ainda agora os judeus procuravam apedrejar-te, e tornas para lá? Jesus respondeu: Não há doze horas no dia? Se alguém andar de dia, não tropeça, porque vê a luz deste mundo; Mas, se andar de noite, tropeça, porque nele não há luz. Assim falou; e depois disse-lhes: Lázaro, o nosso amigo, dorme, mas vou despertá-lo do sono. Disseram, pois, os seus discípulos: Senhor, se dorme, estará salvo. Mas Jesus dizia isto da sua morte; eles, porém, cuidavam que falava do repouso do sono. Então Jesus disse-lhes claramente: Lázaro está morto; E folgo, por amor de vós, de que eu lá não estivesse, para que acrediteis; mas vamos ter com ele. Disse, pois, Tomé, chamado Dídimo, aos condiscípulos: Vamos nós também, para morrermos com ele. Chegando, pois, Jesus, achou que já havia quatro dias que estava na sepultura. (Ora Betânia distava de Jerusalém quase quinze estádios. ) E muitos dos judeus tinham ido consolar a Marta e a Maria, acerca de seu irmão. Ouvindo, pois, Marta que Jesus vinha, saiu-lhe ao encontro; Maria, porém, ficou assentada em casa. Disse, pois, Marta a Jesus: Senhor, se tu estivesses aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido. Mas também agora sei que tudo quanto pedires a Deus, Deus to concederá. Disse-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão há de ressuscitar. Disse-lhe Marta: Eu sei que há de ressuscitar na ressurreição do último dia. Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida; quem crê em mim, ainda que esteja morto, viverá; E todo aquele que vive, e crê em mim, nunca morrerá. Crês tu isto? Disse-lhe ela: Sim, Senhor, creio que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, que havia de vir ao mundo. E, dito isto, partiu, e chamou em segredo a Maria, sua irmã, dizendo: O Mestre está cá, e chama-te. Ela, ouvindo isto, levantou-se logo, e foi ter com ele. (Pois, Jesus ainda não tinha chegado à aldeia, mas estava no lugar onde Marta o encontrara.) Vendo, pois, os judeus, que estavam com ela em casa e a consolavam, que Maria apressadamente se levantara e saíra, seguiram-na, dizendo: Vai ao sepulcro para chorar ali. Tendo, pois, Maria chegado aonde Jesus estava, e vendo-o, lançou-se aos seus pés, dizendo-lhe: Senhor, se tu estivesses aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido. Jesus pois, quando a viu chorar, e também chorando os judeus que com ela vinham, moveu-se muito em espírito, e perturbou-se. E disse: Onde o pusestes? Disseram-lhe: Senhor, vem, e vê. Jesus chorou. Disseram, pois, os judeus: Vede como o amava. E alguns deles disseram: Não podia ele, que abriu os olhos ao cego, fazer também com que este não morresse? Jesus, pois, movendo-se outra vez muito em si mesmo, veio ao sepulcro; e era uma caverna, e tinha uma pedra posta sobre ela. Disse Jesus: Tirai a pedra. Marta, irmã do defunto, disse-lhe: Senhor, já cheira mal, porque é já de quatro dias. Disse-lhe Jesus: Não te hei dito que, se creres, verás a glória de Deus? Tiraram, pois, a pedra de onde o defunto jazia. E Jesus, levantando os olhos para cima, disse: Pai, graças te dou, por me haveres ouvido. Eu bem sei que sempre me ouves, mas eu disse isto por causa da multidão que está em redor, para que creiam que tu me enviaste. E, tendo dito isto, clamou com grande voz: Lázaro, sai para fora. E o defunto saiu, tendo as mãos e os pés ligados com faixas, e o seu rosto envolto num lenço. Disse-lhes Jesus: Desligai-o, e deixai-o ir. Muitos, pois, dentre os judeus que tinham vindo a Maria, e que tinham visto o que Jesus fizera, creram nele. Mas alguns deles foram ter com os fariseus, e disseram-lhes o que Jesus tinha feito. Depois os principais dos sacerdotes e os fariseus formaram conselho, e diziam: Que faremos? porquanto este homem faz muitos sinais. Se o deixamos assim, todos crerão nele, e virão os romanos, e tirar-nos-ão o nosso lugar e a nação. E Caifás, um deles que era sumo sacerdote naquele ano, lhes disse: Vós nada sabeis, Nem considerais que nos convém que um homem morra pelo povo, e que não pereça toda a nação. Ora ele não disse isto de si mesmo, mas, sendo o sumo sacerdote naquele ano, profetizou que Jesus devia morrer pela nação. E não somente pela nação, mas também para reunir em um corpo os filhos de Deus que andavam dispersos. Desde aquele dia, pois, consultavam-se para o matarem. Jesus, pois, já não andava manifestamente entre os judeus, mas retirou-se dali para a terra junto do deserto, para uma cidade chamada Efraim; e ali ficou com os seus discípulos. E estava próxima a páscoa dos judeus, e muitos daquela região subiram a Jerusalém antes da páscoa para se purificarem. Buscavam, pois, a Jesus, e diziam uns aos outros, estando no templo: Que vos parece? Não virá à festa? Ora, os principais dos sacerdotes e os fariseus tinham dado ordem para que, se alguém soubesse onde ele estava, o denunciasse, para o prenderem.

These are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias, wrote in Babylon, in the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burned it with fire. And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book, and in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kings’ sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least to the greatest, even of all those who lived at Babylon by the river Sud. And they wept, and fasted, and prayed before the Lord; they made also a collection of money according to every man’s power: and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem, at the same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedekias the son of Josias king of Judah had made, after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon. And they said, Behold, we have sent you money; buy you therefore with the money burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; and pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that their days may be as the days of heaven above the earth: and the Lord will give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favor in their sight. Pray for us also to the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and to this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us. And you⌃ shall read this book which we have sent to you, to make confession in the house of the Lord, upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn assembly. And you⌃ shall say, To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to our kings, and to our princes, and to our priests, and to our prophets, and to our fathers: for that we have sinned before the Lord, and disobeyed him, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us: since the day that the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to this present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, and we have dealt unadvisedly in not hearkening to his voice. Wherefore the plagues clave to us, and the curse, which the Lord commanded Moses his servant to pronounce in the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as at this day. Nevertheless we didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord our God, according to all the words of the prophets, whom he sent to us: but we walked every man in the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods, and to do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord our God.

Oração vespertina — segunda leitura

2 Timóteo 2

Tu, pois, meu filho, fortifica-te na graça que há em Cristo Jesus. E o que de mim, entre muitas testemunhas, ouviste, confia-o a homens fiéis, que sejam idôneos para também ensinarem os outros. Tu pois, sofre as aflições, como bom soldado de Jesus Cristo. Ninguém que milita se embaraça com negócios desta vida, a fim de agradar àquele que o alistou para a guerra. E, se alguém também milita, não é coroado se não militar legitimamente. O lavrador que trabalha deve ser o primeiro a gozar dos frutos. Considera o que digo, e o Senhor te dê entendimento em tudo. Lembra-te de que Jesus Cristo, que é da descendência de Davi, ressuscitou dentre os mortos, segundo o meu evangelho; Por isso sofro trabalhos e até prisões, como um malfeitor; mas a palavra de Deus não está presa. Portanto, tudo sofro por amor dos escolhidos, para que também eles alcancem a salvação que está em Cristo Jesus com glória eterna. Palavra fiel é esta: que, se morrermos com ele, também com ele viveremos; Se sofrermos, também com ele reinaremos; se o negarmos, também ele nos negará; Se formos infiéis, ele permanece fiel; não pode negar-se a si mesmo. Traze estas coisas à memória, ordenando-lhes diante do Senhor que não tenham contendas de palavras, que para nada aproveitam e são para perversão dos ouvintes. Procura apresentar-te a Deus aprovado, como obreiro que não tem de que se envergonhar, que maneja bem a palavra da verdade. Mas evita os falatórios profanos, porque produzirão maior impiedade. E a palavra desses roerá como gangrena; entre os quais são Himeneu e Fileto; Os quais se desviaram da verdade, dizendo que a ressurreição era já feita, e perverteram a fé de alguns. Todavia o fundamento de Deus fica firme, tendo este selo: O Senhor conhece os que são seus, e qualquer que profere o nome de Cristo aparte-se da iniqüidade. Ora, numa grande casa não somente há vasos de ouro e de prata, mas também de pau e de barro; uns para honra, outros, porém, para desonra. De sorte que, se alguém se purificar destas coisas, será vaso para honra, santificado e idôneo para uso do Senhor, e preparado para toda a boa obra. Foge também das paixões da mocidade; e segue a justiça, a fé, o amor, e a paz com os que, com um coração puro, invocam o Senhor. E rejeita as questões loucas, e sem instrução, sabendo que produzem contendas. E ao servo do Senhor não convém contender, mas sim, ser manso para com todos, apto para ensinar, sofredor; Instruindo com mansidão os que resistem, a ver se porventura Deus lhes dará arrependimento para conhecerem a verdade, E tornarem a despertar, desprendendo-se dos laços do diabo, em que à vontade dele estão presos.
