But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment will touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died; And their departure was accounted to be their hurt, And their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace. For even if in the sight of men they be punished, Their hope is full of immortality; And having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good; Because God made trial of them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he proved them, And as a whole burnt offering he accepted them. And in the time of their visitation they will shine forth, And as sparks among stubble they will run to and fro. They will judge nations, and have dominion over peoples; And the Lord will reign over them for evermore. They that trust on him will understand truth, And the faithful will abide with him in love; Because grace and mercy are to his chosen. But the ungodly will be requited even as they reasoned, They which lightly regarded the righteous man, and revolted from the Lord; (For he that sets at nothing wisdom and discipline is miserable;) And void is their hope and their toils unprofitable, And useless are their works: Their wives are foolish, and wicked are their children; Accursed is their begetting. Because happy is the barren that is undefiled, She who has not conceived in transgression; She will have fruit when God visiteth souls. And happy is the eunuch which has wrought no lawless deed with his hands, Nor imagined wicked things against the Lord; For there will be given him for his faithfulness a peculiar favor, And a lot in the sanctuary of the Lord more delightsome than wife or children. For good labors have fruit of great renown; And the root of understanding can’t fail. But children of adulterers will not come to maturity, And the seed of an unlawful bed will vanish away. For if they live long, they will be held in no account, And at the last their old age will be without honor. And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, Nor in the day of decision will they have consolation. For the end of an unrighteous generation is always grievous.

Lucas 1:1-39

Tendo, pois, muitos empreendido pôr em ordem a narração dos fatos que entre nós se cumpriram, Segundo nos transmitiram os mesmos que os presenciaram desde oprincípio, e foram ministros da palavra, Pareceu-me também a mim conveniente descrevê-los a ti, ó excelente Teófilo, por sua ordem, havendo-me já informado minuciosamente de tudo desde o princípio; Para que conheças a certeza das coisas de que já estás informado. Existiu, no tempo de Herodes, rei da Judéia, um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, da ordem de Abias, e cuja mulher era das filhas de Arão; e o seu nome era Isabel. E eram ambos justos perante Deus, andando sem repreensão em todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor. E não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril, e ambos eram avançados em idade. E aconteceu que, exercendo ele o sacerdócio diante de Deus, na ordem da sua turma, Segundo o costume sacerdotal, coube-lhe em sorte entrar no templo do Senhor para oferecer o incenso. E toda a multidão do povo estava fora, orando, à hora do incenso. E um anjo do Senhor lhe apareceu, posto em pé, à direita do altar do incenso. E Zacarias, vendo-o, turbou-se, e caiu temor sobre ele. Mas o anjo lhe disse: Zacarias, não temas, porque a tua oração foi ouvida, e Isabel, tua mulher, dará à luz um filho, e lhe porás o nome de João. E terás prazer e alegria, e muitos se alegrarão no seu nascimento, Porque será grande diante do Senhor, e não beberá vinho, nem bebida forte, e será cheio do Espírito Santo, já desde o ventre de sua mãe. E converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor seu Deus, E irá adiante dele no espírito e virtude de Elias, para converter os corações dos pais aos filhos, e os rebeldes à prudência dos justos, com o fim de preparar ao Senhor um povo bem disposto. Disse então Zacarias ao anjo: Como saberei isto? pois eu já sou velho, e minha mulher avançada em idade. E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: Eu sou Gabriel, que assisto diante de Deus, e fui enviado a falar-te e dar-te estas alegres novas. E eis que ficarás mudo, e não poderás falar até ao dia em que estas coisas aconteçam; porquanto não creste nas minhas palavras, que a seu tempo se hão de cumprir. E o povo estava esperando a Zacarias, e maravilhava-se de que tanto se demorasse no templo. E, saindo ele, não lhes podia falar; e entenderam que tinha tido uma visão no templo. E falava por acenos, e ficou mudo. E sucedeu que, terminados os dias de seu ministério, voltou para sua casa. E, depois daqueles dias, Isabel, sua mulher, concebeu, e por cinco meses se ocultou, dizendo: Assim me fez o Senhor, nos dias em que atentou em mim, para destruir o meu opróbrio entre os homens. E, no sexto mês, foi o anjo Gabriel enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galiléia, chamada Nazaré, A uma virgem desposada com um homem, cujo nome era José, da casa de Davi; e o nome da virgem era Maria. E, entrando o anjo aonde ela estava, disse: Salve, agraciada; o Senhor é contigo; bendita és tu entre as mulheres. E, vendo-o ela, turbou-se muito com aquelas palavras, e considerava que saudação seria esta. Disse-lhe, então, o anjo: Maria, não temas, porque achaste graça diante de Deus. E eis que em teu ventre conceberás e darás à luz um filho, e pôr-lhe-ás o nome de Jesus. Este será grande, e será chamado filho do Altíssimo; e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de Davi, seu pai; E reinará eternamente na casa de Jacó, e o seu reino não terá fim. E disse Maria ao anjo: Como se fará isto, visto que não conheço homem algum? E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: Descerá sobre ti o Espírito Santo, e a virtude do Altíssimo te cobrirá com a sua sombra; por isso também o Santo, que de ti há de nascer, será chamado Filho de Deus. E eis que também Isabel, tua prima, concebeu um filho em sua velhice; e é este o sexto mês para aquela que era chamada estéril; Porque para Deus nada é impossível. Disse então Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor; cumpra-se em mim segundo a tua palavra. E o anjo ausentou-se dela. E, naqueles dias, levantando-se Maria, foi apressada às montanhas, a uma cidade de Judá,

Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.

2 Coríntios 13

É esta a terceira vez que vou ter convosco. Por boca de duas ou três testemunhas será confirmada toda a palavra. Já anteriormente o disse, e segunda vez o digo como quando estava presente; mas agora, estando ausente, o escrevo aos que antes pecaram e a todos os mais, que, se outra vez for, não lhes perdoarei; Visto que buscais uma prova de Cristo que fala em mim, o qual não é fraco para convosco, antes é poderoso entre vós. Porque, ainda que foi crucificado por fraqueza, vive, contudo, pelo poder de Deus. Porque nós também somos fracos nele, mas viveremos com ele pelo poder de Deus em vós. Examinai-vos a vós mesmos, se permaneceis na fé; provai-vos a vós mesmos. Ou não sabeis quanto a vós mesmos, que Jesus Cristo está em vós? Se não é que já estais reprovados. Mas espero que entendereis que nós não somos reprovados. Ora, eu rogo a Deus que não façais mal algum, não para que sejamos achados aprovados, mas para que vós façais o bem, embora nós sejamos como reprovados. Porque nada podemos contra a verdade, senão pela verdade. Porque nos regozijamos de estar fracos, quando vós estais fortes; e o que desejamos é a vossa perfeição. Portanto, escrevo estas coisas estando ausente, para que, estando presente, não use de rigor, segundo o poder que o Senhor me deu para edificação, e não para destruição. Quanto ao mais, irmãos, regozijai-vos, sede perfeitos, sede consolados, sede de um mesmo parecer, vivei em paz; e o Deus de amor e de paz será convosco. Saudai-vos uns aos outros com ósculo santo. Todos os santos vos saúdam. A graça do Senhor Jesus Cristo, e o amor de Deus, e a comunhão do Espírito Santo seja com todos vós. Amém.
