He that lives forever created all things in common. The Lord alone will be justified. To none has he given power to declare his works: And who will trace out his mighty deeds? Who shall number the strength of his majesty? And who shall also tell out his mercies? As for the wondrous works of the Lord, it is not possible to take from them nor add to them, Neither is it possible to track them out. When a man has finished, then he is but at the beginning; And when he ceaseth, then will he be in perplexity. What is man, and whereto serves he? What is his good, and what is his evil? The number of man’s days at the most are a hundred years. As a drop of water from the sea, and a pebble from the sand; So are a few years in the day of eternity. For this cause the Lord was longsuffering over them, And poured out his mercy upon them. He saw and perceived their end, that it is evil; Therefore he multiplied his forgiveness. The mercy of a man is upon his neighbor; But the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh; Reproving, and chastening, and teaching, And bringing again, as a shepherd does his flock. He has mercy on those who accept chastening, And that diligently seek after his judgements. My son, to your good deeds add no blemish; And no grief of words in any of your giving. Shall not the dew assuage the scorching heat? So is a word better than a gift. Behold, is not a word better than a gift? And both are with a gracious man. A fool will upbrade ungraciously; And the gift of an envious man consumes the eyes. Learn before you speak; And have a care of your health or ever you be sick. Before judgement examine yourself; And in the hour of visitation you will find forgiveness. Humble yourself before you be sick; And in the time of sins show repentance. Let nothing hinder you to pay your vow in due time; And wait not until death to be justified. Before you make a vow, prepare yourself; And be not as a man that tempts the Lord. Think upon the wrath that will be in the days of the end, And the time of vengeance, when he turns away his face. In the days of fulness remember the time of hunger, And poverty and lack in the days of wealth. From morning until evening the time changes; And all things are speedy before the Lord. A wise man will fear in everything; And in days of sinning he will beware of offence. Every man of understanding knows wisdom; And he will give thanks to him that found her. They that were of understanding in sayings became also wise themselves, And poured forth apt proverbs. Go not after your lusts; And refrain yourself from your appetites. If you give fully to your soul the delight of her desire, She will make you the laughing stock of your enemies. Make not merry in much luxury; Neither be tied to the expense thereof. Be not made a beggar by banqueting upon borrowing, When you have nothing in your purse.

Lucas 19

E, tendo Jesus entrado em Jericó, ia passando. E eis que havia ali um homem chamado Zaqueu; e era este um chefe dos publicanos, e era rico. E procurava ver quem era Jesus, e não podia, por causa da multidão, pois era de pequena estatura. E, correndo adiante, subiu a uma figueira brava para o ver; porque havia de passar por ali. E quando Jesus chegou àquele lugar, olhando para cima, viu-o e disse-lhe: Zaqueu, desce depressa, porque hoje me convém pousar em tua casa. E, apressando-se, desceu, e recebeu-o alegremente. E, vendo todos isto, murmuravam, dizendo que entrara para ser hóspede de um homem pecador. E, levantando-se Zaqueu, disse ao Senhor: Senhor, eis que eu dou aos pobres metade dos meus bens; e, se nalguma coisa tenho defraudado alguém, o restituo quadruplicado. E disse-lhe Jesus: Hoje veio a salvação a esta casa, pois também este é filho de Abraão. Porque o Filho do homem veio buscar e salvar o que se havia perdido. E, ouvindo eles estas coisas, ele prosseguiu, e contou uma parábola; porquanto estava perto de Jerusalém, e cuidavam que logo se havia de manifestar o reino de Deus. Disse pois: Certo homem nobre partiu para uma terra remota, a fim de tomar para si um reino e voltar depois. E, chamando dez servos seus, deu-lhes dez minas, e disse-lhes: Negociai até que eu venha. Mas os seus concidadãos odiavam-no, e mandaram após ele embaixadores, dizendo: Não queremos que este reine sobre nós. E aconteceu que, voltando ele, depois de ter tomado o reino, disse que lhe chamassem aqueles servos, a quem tinha dado o dinheiro, para saber o que cada um tinha ganhado, negociando. E veio o primeiro, dizendo: Senhor, a tua mina rendeu dez minas. E ele lhe disse: Bem está, servo bom, porque no mínimo foste fiel, sobre dez cidades terás autoridade. E veio o segundo, dizendo: Senhor, a tua mina rendeu cinco minas. E a este disse também: Sê tu também sobre cinco cidades. E veio outro, dizendo: Senhor, aqui está a tua mina, que guardei num lenço; Porque tive medo de ti, que és homem rigoroso, que tomas o que não puseste, e segas o que não semeaste. Porém, ele lhe disse: Mau servo, pela tua boca te julgarei. Sabias que eu sou homem rigoroso, que tomo o que não pus, e sego o que não semeei; Por que não puseste, pois, o meu dinheiro no banco, para que eu, vindo, o exigisse com os juros? E disse aos que estavam com ele: Tirai-lhe a mina, e dai-a ao que tem dez minas. (E disseram-lhe eles: Senhor, ele tem dez minas. ) Pois eu vos digo que a qualquer que tiver ser-lhe-á dado, mas ao que não tiver, até o que tem lhe será tirado. E quanto àqueles meus inimigos que não quiseram que eu reinasse sobre eles, trazei-os aqui, e matai-os diante de mim. E, dito isto, ia caminhando adiante, subindo para Jerusalém. E aconteceu que, chegando perto de Betfagé, e de Betânia, ao monte chamado das Oliveiras, mandou dois dos seus discípulos, Dizendo: Ide à aldeia que está defronte, e aí, ao entrar, achareis preso um jumentinho em que nenhum homem ainda montou; soltai-o e trazei-o. E, se alguém vos perguntar: Por que o soltais? assim lhe direis: Porque o Senhor o há de mister. E, indo os que haviam sido mandados, acharam como lhes dissera. E, quando soltaram o jumentinho, seus donos lhes disseram: Por que soltais o jumentinho? E eles responderam: O Senhor o há de mister. E trouxeram-no a Jesus; e, lançando sobre o jumentinho as suas vestes, puseram Jesus em cima. E, indo ele, estendiam no caminho as suas vestes. E, quando já chegava perto da descida do Monte das Oliveiras, toda a multidão dos discípulos, regozijando-se, começou a dar louvores a Deus em alta voz, por todas as maravilhas que tinham visto, Dizendo: Bendito o Rei que vem em nome do Senhor; paz no céu, e glória nas alturas. E disseram-lhe de entre a multidão alguns dos fariseus: Mestre, repreende os teus discípulos. E, respondendo ele, disse-lhes: Digo-vos que, se estes se calarem, as próprias pedras clamarão. E, quando ia chegando, vendo a cidade, chorou sobre ela, Dizendo: Ah! se tu conhecesses também, ao menos neste teu dia, o que à tua paz pertence! Mas agora isto está encoberto aos teus olhos. Porque dias virão sobre ti, em que os teus inimigos te cercarão de trincheiras, e te sitiarão, e te estreitarão de todos os lados; E te derrubarão, a ti e aos teus filhos que dentro de ti estiverem, e não deixarão em ti pedra sobre pedra, pois que não conheceste o tempo da tua visitação. E, entrando no templo, começou a expulsar todos os que nele vendiam e compravam, Dizendo-lhes: Está escrito: A minha casa é casa de oração; mas vós fizestes dela covil de salteadores. E todos os dias ensinava no templo; mas os principais dos sacerdotes, e os escribas, e os principais do povo procuravam matá-lo. E não achavam meio de o fazer, porque todo o povo pendia para ele, escutando-o.

A workman that is a drunkard will not become rich: He that despises small things will fall by little and little. Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away: And he that cleaves to harlots will be the more reckless. Moths and worms will have him to heritage; And a reckless soul will be taken away. He that is hasty to trust is light-minded; And he that sins will offend against his own soul. He that makes merry in his heart will be condemned: And he that hates talk has the less wickedness. Never repeat what is told you, And you will fare never the worse. Whether it be of friend or foe, tell it not; And unless it is a sin to you, reveal it not. For he has heard you, and observed you, And when the time comes he will hate you. Hast you heard a word? let it die with you: Be of good courage, it will not burst you. A fool will travail in pain with a word, As a woman in labor with a child. As an arrow that sticks in the flesh of the thigh, So is a word in a fool’s belly. Reprove a friend; it may be he did it not: And if he did something, that he may do it no more. Reprove your neighbor; it may be he said it not: And if he has said it, that he may not say it again. Reprove a friend; for many times there is slander: And trust not every word. There is one that slips, and not from the heart: And who is he that has not sinned with his tongue? Reprove your neighbor before you threaten him; And give place to the law of the Most High. All wisdom is the fear of the Lord; And in all wisdom is the doing of the law. And the knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom; And the prudence of sinners is not counsel. There is a wickedness, and the same is abomination; And there is a fool lacking in wisdom. Better is one that has small understanding, and fears, Than one that has much prudence, and transgresses the law. There is an exquisite subtlety, and the same is unjust; And there is one that perverteth favor to gain a judgement. There is one that does wickedly, that hangs down his head with mourning; But inwardly he is full of deceit, Bowing down his face, and making as if he were deaf of one ear: Where he is not known, he will be beforehand with you. And if for lack of power he be hindered from sinning, If he find opportunity, he will do mischief. A man will be known by his look, And one that has understanding will be known by his face, when you meet him. A man’s attire, and grinning laughter, And gait, show what he is.

Colossenses 3

Portanto, se já ressuscitastes com Cristo, buscai as coisas que são de cima, onde Cristo está assentado à destra de Deus. Pensai nas coisas que são de cima, e não nas que são da terra; Porque já estais mortos, e a vossa vida está escondida com Cristo em Deus. Quando Cristo, que é a nossa vida, se manifestar, então também vós vos manifestareis com ele em glória. Mortificai, pois, os vossos membros, que estão sobre a terra: a fornicação, a impureza, o afeição desordenada, a vil concupiscência, e a avareza, que é idolatria; Pelas quais coisas vem a ira de Deus sobre os filhos da desobediência; Nas quais, também, em outro tempo andastes, quando vivíeis nelas. Mas agora, despojai-vos também de tudo: da ira, da cólera, da malícia, da maledicência, das palavras torpes da vossa boca. Não mintais uns aos outros, pois que já vos despistes do velho homem com os seus feitos, E vos vestistes do novo, que se renova para o conhecimento, segundo a imagem daquele que o criou; Onde não há grego, nem judeu, circuncisão, nem incircuncisão, bárbaro, cita, servo ou livre; mas Cristo é tudo, e em todos. Revesti-vos, pois, como eleitos de Deus, santos e amados, de entranhas de misericórdia, de benignidade, humildade, mansidão, longanimidade; Suportando-vos uns aos outros, e perdoando-vos uns aos outros, se alguém tiver queixa contra outro; assim como Cristo vos perdoou, assim fazei vós também. E, sobre tudo isto, revesti-vos de amor, que é o vínculo da perfeição. E a paz de Deus, para a qual também fostes chamados em um corpo, domine em vossos corações; e sede agradecidos. A palavra de Cristo habite em vós abundantemente, em toda a sabedoria, ensinando-vos e admoestando-vos uns aos outros, com salmos, hinos e cânticos espirituais, cantando ao Senhor com graça em vosso coração. E, quanto fizerdes por palavras ou por obras, fazei tudo em nome do Senhor Jesus, dando por ele graças a Deus Pai. Vós, mulheres, estai sujeitas a vossos próprios maridos, como convém no Senhor. Vós, maridos, amai a vossas mulheres, e não vos irriteis contra elas. Vós, filhos, obedecei em tudo a vossos pais, porque isto é agradável ao Senhor. Vós, pais, não irriteis a vossos filhos, para que não percam o ânimo. Vós, servos, obedecei em tudo a vossos senhores segundo a carne, não servindo só na aparência, como para agradar aos homens, mas em simplicidade de coração, temendo a Deus. E tudo quanto fizerdes, fazei-o de todo o coração, como ao Senhor, e não aos homens, Sabendo que recebereis do Senhor o galardão da herança, porque a Cristo, o Senhor, servis. Mas quem fizer agravo receberá o agravo que fizer; pois não há acepção de pessoas.
