Love righteousness, you⌃ that be judges of the earth, Think you⌃ of the Lord with a good mind, And in singleness of heart seek you⌃ him; Because he is found of those who tempt him not, And is manifested to those who do not distrust him. For crooked thoughts separate from God; And the supreme Power, when it is brought to the proof, puts to confusion the foolish: Because wisdom will not enter into a soul that deviseth evil, Nor dwell in a body that is held in pledge by sin. For a holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit. And will start away from thoughts that are without understanding, And will be put to confusion when unrighteousness has come in. For wisdom is a spirit that loves man, And she will not hold a blasphemer guiltless for his lips; Because God bears witness of his reins, And is a true overseer of his heart, And a hearer of his tongue: Because the spirit of the Lord has filled the world, And that which holds all things together has knowledge of every voice. Therefore no man that utters unrighteous things will be unseen; Neither will Justice, when it convicts, pass him by. For in the midst of his counsels the ungodly will be searched out; And the sound of his words will come to the Lord To bring to conviction his lawless deeds: Because there is an ear of jealousy that listens to all things, And the noise of murmurings is not hid. Beware then of unprofitable murmuring, And refrain your tongue from backbiting; Because no secret utterance will go on its way void, And a mouth that belies destroys a soul. Court not death in the error of your life; Neither draw upon yourselves destruction by the works of your hands: Because God made not death; Neither delights he when the living perish: For he created all things that they might have being: And the generative powers of the world are healthsome, And there is no poison of destruction in them: Nor has Hades royal dominion upon earth, For righteousness is immortal: But ungodly men by their hands and their words called death to them: Deeming him a friend they consumed away, And they made a covenant with him, Because they are worthy to be of his portion.

Marcos 16

E, passado o sábado, Maria Madalena, e Maria, mãe de Tiago, e Salomé, compraram aromas para irem ungi-lo. E, no primeiro dia da semana, foram ao sepulcro, de manhã cedo, ao nascer do sol. E diziam umas às outras: Quemnos revolverá a pedra da porta do sepulcro? E, olhando, viram que já a pedra estava revolvida; e era ela muito grande. E, entrando no sepulcro, viram um jovem assentado à direita, vestido de uma roupa comprida, branca; e ficaram espantadas. Ele, porém, disse-lhes: Não vos assusteis; buscais a Jesus Nazareno, que foi crucificado; já ressuscitou, não está aqui; eis aqui o lugar onde o puseram. Mas ide, dizei a seus discípulos, e a Pedro, que ele vai adiante de vós para a Galiléia; ali o vereis, como ele vos disse. E, saindo elas apressadamente, fugiram do sepulcro, porque estavam possuídas de temor e assombro; e nada diziam a ninguém porque temiam. E Jesus, tendo ressuscitado na manhã do primeiro dia da semana, apareceu primeiramente a Maria Madalena, da qual tinha expulsado sete demônios. E, partindo ela, anunciou-o àqueles que tinham estado com ele, os quais estavam tristes, e chorando. E, ouvindo eles que vivia, e que tinha sido visto por ela, não o creram. E depois manifestou-se de outra forma a dois deles, que iam de caminho para o campo. E, indo estes, anunciaram-no aos outros, mas nem ainda estes creram. Finalmente apareceu aos onze, estando eles assentados juntamente, e lançou-lhes em rosto a sua incredulidade e dureza de coração, por não haverem crido nos que o tinham visto já ressuscitado. E disse-lhes: Ide por todo omundo, pregai o evangelho a toda criatura. Quem crer e for batizado será salvo; mas quem não crer será condenado. E estes sinais seguirão aos que crerem: Em meu nome expulsarão os demônios; falarão novas línguas; Pegarão nas serpentes; e, se beberem alguma coisa mortífera, não lhes fará dano algum; e porãoas mãos sobre os enfermos, e os curarão. Ora, o Senhor, depois de lhes ter falado, foi recebido no céu, e assentou-se à direita de Deus. E eles, tendo partido, pregaram por todas as partes, cooperando com eles o Senhor, e confirmando a palavra com os sinais que se seguiram. Amém.

For they said within themselves, reasoning not aright, Short and sorrowful is our life; And there is no healing when a man comes to his end, And none was ever known that gave release from Hades. Because by mere chance were we born, And hereafter we will be as though we had never been: Because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, And while our heart beats reason is a spark, Which being extinguished, the body will be turned into ashes, And the spirit will be dispersed as thin air; And our name will be forgotten in time, And no man will remember our works; And our life will pass away as the traces of a cloud, And will be scattered as is a mist, When it is chased by the beams of the sun, And overcome by the heat thereof. For our alloted time is the passing of a shadow, And our end retreats not; Because it is fast sealed, and none turns it back. Come therefore and let us enjoy the good things that now are; And let us use the creation with all our soul as youth’s possession. Let us fill ourselves with costly wine and perfumes; And let no flower of spring pass us by: Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds, before they be withered: Let none of us go without his share in our proud revelry: Everywhere let us leave tokens of our mirth: Because this is our portion, and our lot is this. Let us oppress the righteous poor; Let us not spare the widow, Nor reverence the hairs of the old man gray for length of years. But let our strength be to us a law of righteousness; For that which is weak is found to be of no service. But let us lie in wait for the righteous man, Because he is of disservice to us, And is contrary to our works, And upbraids us with sins against the law, And lays to our charge sins against our discipline. He professes to have knowledge of God, And names himself servant of the Lord. He became to us a reproof of our thoughts. He is grievous to us even to behold, Because his life is unlike other men’s, And his paths are of strange fashion. We were accounted of him as worthless metal, And he abstains from our ways as from uncleannesses. The latter end of the righteous he calls happy; And he vaunts that God is his father. Let us see if his words be true, And let us try what shall befall in the ending of his life. For if the righteous man is God’s son, he will uphold him, And he will deliver him out of the hand of his adversaries. With outrage and torture let us put him to the test, That we may learn his gentleness, And may prove his patience under wrong. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; For he will be visited according to his words. Thus reasoned they, and they were led astray; For their wickedness blinded them, And they knew not the mysteries of God, Neither hoped they for wages of holiness, Nor did they judge that there is a prize for blameless souls. Because God created man for incorruption, And made him an image of his own proper being; But by the envy of the devil death entered into the world, And those who are of his portion make trial thereof.

2 Coríntios 12

Em verdade que não convém gloriar-me; mas passarei às visões e revelações do Senhor. Conheço um homem em Cristo que há catorze anos (se no corpo, não sei, se fora do corpo, não sei; Deus o sabe) foi arrebatado ao terceiro céu. E sei que o tal homem (se no corpo, se fora do corpo, não sei; Deus o sabe) Foi arrebatado ao paraíso; e ouviu palavras inefáveis, que ao homem não é lícito falar. De alguém assim me gloriarei eu, mas de mim mesmo não me gloriarei, senão nas minhas fraquezas. Porque, se quiser gloriar-me, não serei néscio, porque direi a verdade; mas deixo isto, para que ninguém cuide de mim mais do que em mim vê ou de mim ouve. E, para que não me exaltasse pela excelência das revelações, foi-me dado um espinho na carne, a saber, um mensageiro de Satanás para me esbofetear, a fim de não me exaltar. Acerca do qual três vezes orei ao Senhor para que se desviasse de mim. E disse-me: A minha graça te basta, porque o meu poder se aperfeiçoa na fraqueza. De boa vontade, pois, me gloriarei nas minhas fraquezas, para que em mim habite o poder de Cristo. Por isso sinto prazer nas fraquezas, nas injúrias, nas necessidades, nas perseguições, nas angústias por amor de Cristo. Porque quando estou fraco então sou forte. Fui néscio em gloriar-me; vós me constrangestes. Eu devia ter sido louvado por vós, visto que em nada fui inferior aos mais excelentes apóstolos, ainda que nada sou. Os sinais do meu apostolado foram manifestados entre vós com toda a paciência, por sinais, prodígios e maravilhas. Pois, em que tendes vós sido inferiores às outras igrejas, a não ser que eu mesmo vos não fui pesado? Perdoai-me este agravo. Eis aqui estou pronto para pela terceira vez ir ter convosco, e não vos serei pesado, pois que não busco o que é vosso, mas sim a vós: porque não devem os filhos entesourar para os pais, mas os pais para os filhos. Eu de muito boa vontade gastarei, e me deixarei gastar pelas vossas almas, ainda que, amando-vos cada vez mais, seja menos amado. Mas seja assim; eu não vos fui pesado mas, sendo astuto, vos tomei com dolo. Porventura aproveitei-me de vós por algum daqueles que vos enviei? Roguei a Tito, e enviei com ele um irmão. Porventura Tito se aproveitou de vós? Não andamos porventura no mesmo espírito, sobre as mesmas pisadas? Cuidais que ainda nos desculpamos convosco? Falamos em Cristo perante Deus, e tudo isto, ó amados, para vossa edificação. Porque receio que, quando chegar, não vos ache como eu quereria, e eu seja achado de vós como não quereríeis; que de alguma maneira haja pendências, invejas, iras, porfias, detrações, mexericos, orgulhos, tumultos; Que, quando for outra vez, o meu Deus me humilhe para convosco, e chore por muitos daqueles que dantes pecaram, e não se arrependeram da imundícia, e fornicação, e desonestidade que cometeram.
