Oração da manhã — primeira leitura

A wise judge will instruct his people; And the government of a man of understanding will be well ordered. As is the judge of his people, so are his ministers; And as is the ruler of the city, such are all those who dwell therein. An uninstructed king will destroy his people; And a city will be established through the understanding of the powerful. In the hand of the Lord is the authority of the earth; And in due time he will raise up over it one that is profitable. In the hand of the Lord is the prosperity of a man; And upon the person of the scribe will he lay his honor. Be not angry with your neighbor for every wrong; And do nothing by works of violence. Pride is hateful before the Lord and before men; And in the judgement of both will unrighteousness err. Sovereignty is transferred from nation to nation, Because of iniquities, and deeds of violence, and greed of money. Why is earth and ashes proud? Because in his life he has cast away his bowels. It is a long disease; the physician mocketh: And he is a king today, and tomorrow he will die. For when a man is dead, He will inherit creeping things, and beasts, and worms. It is the beginning of pride when a man departs from the Lord; And his heart is departed from him that made him. For the beginning of pride is sin; And he that keeps it will pour forth abomination. For this cause the Lord brought upon them strange calamities, And overthrew them utterly. The Lord cast down the thrones of rulers, And set the meek in their stead. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, And planted the lowly in their stead. The Lord overthrew the lands of nations, And destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He took some of them away, and destroyed them, And made their memorial to cease from the earth. Pride has not been created for men, Nor wrathful anger for the offspring of women. What manner of seed has honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has honor? those who fear the Lord. What manner of seed has no honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has no honor? those who transgress the commandments. In the midst of kindred he that rules them has honor; And in the eyes of the Lord those who fear him. The rich man, and the honorable, and the poor, Their glorying is the fear of the Lord. It is not right to dishonor a poor man that has understanding; And it is not fitting to glorify a man that is a sinner. The great man, and the judge, and the mighty man, will be glorified; And there is not one of them greater than he that fears the Lord. Free men will minister to a wise servant; And a man that has knowledge will not murmur thereat. Be not over wise in doing your work; And glorify not yourself in the time of your distress. Better is he that labores, and abounds in all things, Than he that glorifieth himself, and lacketh bread. My son, glorify your soul in meekness, And give it honor according to the worthiness thereof. Who will justify him that sins against his own soul? And who will glorify him that dishonors his own life? A poor man is glorified for his knowledge; And a rich man is glorified for his riches. But he that is glorified in poverty, how much more in riches? And he that is inglorious in riches, how much more in poverty?

Lucas 15

E Chegavam-se a ele todos os publicanos e pecadores para o ouvir. E os fariseus e os escribas murmuravam, dizendo: Este recebe pecadores, e come com eles. E ele lhes propôs esta parábola, dizendo: Que homem dentre vós, tendo cem ovelhas, e perdendo uma delas, não deixa no deserto as noventa e nove, e vai após a perdida até que venha a achá-la? E achando-a, a põe sobre os seus ombros, jubiloso; E, chegando a casa, convoca os amigos e vizinhos, dizendo-lhes: Alegrai-vos comigo, porque já achei a minha ovelha perdida. Digo-vos que assim haverá alegria no céu por um pecador que se arrepende, mais do que por noventa e nove justos que não necessitam de arrependimento. Ou qual a mulher que, tendo dez dracmas, se perder uma dracma, não acende a candeia, e varre a casa, e busca com diligência até a achar? E achando-a, convoca as amigas e vizinhas, dizendo: Alegrai-vos comigo, porque já achei a dracma perdida. Assim vos digo que há alegria diante dos anjos de Deus por um pecador que se arrepende. E disse: Um certo homem tinha dois filhos; E o mais moço deles disse ao pai: Pai, dá-me a parte dos bens que me pertence. E ele repartiu por eles a fazenda. E, poucos dias depois, o filho mais novo, ajuntando tudo, partiu para uma terra longínqua, e ali desperdiçou os seus bens, vivendo dissolutamente. E, havendo ele gastado tudo, houve naquela terra uma grande fome, e começou a padecer necessidades. E foi, e chegou-se a um dos cidadãos daquela terra, o qual o mandou para os seus campos, a apascentar porcos. E desejava encher o seu estômago com as bolotas que os porcos comiam, e ninguém lhe dava nada. E, tornando em si, disse: Quantos jornaleiros de meu pai têm abundância de pão, e eu aqui pereço de fome! Levantar-me-ei, e irei ter com meu pai, e dir-lhe-ei: Pai, pequei contra o céu e perante ti; Já não sou digno de ser chamado teu filho; faze-me como um dos teus jornaleiros. E, levantando-se, foi para seu pai; e, quando ainda estava longe, viu-o seu pai, e se moveu de íntima compaixão e, correndo, lançou-se-lhe ao pescoço e o beijou. E o filho lhe disse: Pai, pequei contra o céu e perante ti, e já não sou digno de ser chamado teu filho. Mas o pai disse aos seus servos: Trazei depressa a melhor roupa; e vesti-lho, e ponde-lhe um anel na mão, e alparcas nos pés; E trazei o bezerro cevado, e matai-o; e comamos, e alegremo-nos; Porque este meu filho estava morto, e reviveu, tinha-se perdido, e foi achado. E começaram a alegrar-se. E o seu filho mais velho estava no campo; e quando veio, e chegou perto de casa, ouviu a música e as danças. E, chamando um dos servos, perguntou-lhe que era aquilo. E ele lhe disse: Veio teu irmão; e teu pai matou o bezerro cevado, porque o recebeu são e salvo. Mas ele se indignou, e não queria entrar. E saindo o pai, instava com ele. Mas, respondendo ele, disse ao pai: Eis que te sirvo há tantos anos, sem nunca transgredir o teu mandamento, e nunca me deste um cabrito para alegrar-me com os meus amigos; Vindo, porém, este teu filho, que desperdiçou os teus bens com as meretrizes, mataste-lhe o bezerro cevado. E ele lhe disse: Filho, tu sempre estás comigo, e todas as minhas coisas são tuas; Mas era justo alegrarmo-nos e folgarmos, porque este teu irmão estava morto, e reviveu; e tinha-se perdido, e achou-se.

The wisdom of the lowly will lift up his head, And make him to sit in the midst of great men. Commend not a man for his beauty; And abhor not a man for his outward appearance. The bee is little among such as fly; And her fruit is the chief of sweetmeats. Glory not in the putting on of raiment, And exalt not yourself in the day of honor; For the works of the Lord are wonderful, And his works are hidden among men. Many kings have sat down upon the ground; And one that was never thought of has worn a diadem. Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; And men of renown have been delivered into other men’s hands. Blame not before you have examined: Understand first, and then rebuke. Answer not before you have heard; And interrupt not in the midst of speech. Strive not in a matter that concerns you not; And where sinners judge, sit not you with them. My son, be not busy about many matters: For if you meddle much, you will not be unpunished; And if you pursue, you will not overtake; And you will not escape by fleeing. There is one that toileth, and labores, and makes haste, And is so much the more behind. There is one that is sluggish, and has need of help, Lacking in strength, and that abounds in poverty; And the eyes of the Lord looked upon him for good, And he set him up from his low estate, And lifted up his head; And many marveled at him. Good things and evil, life and death, Poverty and riches, are from the Lord. The gift of the Lord remains with the godly, And his good pleasure will prosper forever. There is that waxes rich by his wariness and pinching, And this is the portion of his reward: When he says, I have found rest, And now will I eat of my goods; Yet he knows not what time will pass, And he will leave them to others, and die. Be stedfast in your covenant, and be conversant therein, And wax old in your work. Marvel not at the works of a sinner; But trust the Lord, and abide in your labor: For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord swiftly on the sudden to make a poor man rich. The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly; And in an hour that comes swiftly he makes his blessing to flourish. Say not, What use is there of me? And what from henceforth will my good things be? Say not, I have sufficient, And from henceforth what harm will happen to me? In the day of good things there is a forgetfulness of evil things; And in the day of evil things a man will not remember things that are good. For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord To reward a man in the day of death according to his ways. The affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of delight; And in the last end of a man is the revelation of his deeds. Call no man blessed before his death; And a man will be known in his children. Bring not every man into your house; For many are the plots of the deceitful man. As a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the heart of a proud man; And as one that is a spy, he looks upon your falling. For he lies in wait to turn things that are good into evil; And in things that are praiseworthy he will lay blame. From a spark of fire a heap of many coals is kindled; And a sinful man lies in wait for blood. Take heed of an evil-doer, for he contriveth wicked things; Lest haply he bring upon you blame forever. Receive a stranger into your house, and he will distract you with brawls, And estrange you from your own.

Filipenses 3

Resta, irmãos meus, que vos regozijeis no Senhor. Não me aborreço de escrever-vos as mesmas coisas, e é segurança para vós. Guardai-vos dos cães, guardai-vos dos maus obreiros, guardai-vos da circuncisão; Porque a circuncisão somos nós, que servimos a Deus em espírito, e nos gloriamos em Jesus Cristo, e não confiamos na carne. Ainda que também podia confiar na carne; se algum outro cuida que pode confiar na carne, ainda mais eu: Circuncidado ao oitavo dia, da linhagem de Israel, da tribo de Benjamim, hebreu de hebreus; segundo a lei, fui fariseu; Segundo o zelo, perseguidor da igreja, segundo a justiça que há na lei, irrepreensível. Mas o que para mim era ganho reputei-o perda por Cristo. E, na verdade, tenho também por perda todas as coisas, pela excelência do conhecimento de Cristo Jesus, meu Senhor; pelo qual sofri a perda de todas estas coisas, e as considero como escória, para que possa ganhar a Cristo, E seja achado nele, não tendo a minha justiça que vem da lei, mas a que vem pela fé em Cristo, a saber, a justiça que vem de Deus pela fé; Para conhecê-lo, e à virtude da sua ressurreição, e à comunicação de suas aflições, sendo feito conforme à sua morte; Para ver se de alguma maneira posso chegar à ressurreição dentre os mortos. Não que já a tenha alcançado, ou que seja perfeito; mas prossigo para alcançar aquilo para o que fui também preso por Cristo Jesus. Irmãos, quanto a mim, não julgo que o haja alcançado; mas uma coisa faço, e é que, esquecendo-me das coisas que atrás ficam, e avançando para as que estão diante de mim, Prossigo para o alvo, pelo prêmio da soberana vocação de Deus em Cristo Jesus. Por isso todos quantos já somos perfeitos, sintamos isto mesmo; e, se sentis alguma coisa de outra maneira, também Deus vo-lo revelará. Mas, naquilo a que já chegamos, andemos segundo a mesma regra, e sintamos o mesmo. Sede também meus imitadores, irmãos, e tende cuidado, segundo o exemplo que tendes em nós, pelos que assim andam. Porque muitos há, dos quais muitas vezes vos disse, e agora também digo, chorando, que são inimigos da cruz de Cristo, Cujo fim é a perdição; cujo Deus é o ventre, e cuja glória é para confusão deles, que só pensam nas coisas terrenas. Mas a nossa cidade está nos céus, de onde também esperamos o Salvador, o Senhor Jesus Cristo, Que transformará o nosso corpo abatido, para ser conforme o seu corpo glorioso, segundo o seu eficaz poder de sujeitar também a si todas as coisas.
