A slothful man is compared to a stone that is defiled; And every one will hiss him out in his disgrace. A slothful man is compared to the filth of a dunghill: Every man that takes it up will shake out his hand. A father has shame in having begotten an uninstructed son; And a foolish daughter is born to his loss. A prudent daughter will inherit a husband of her own; And she that brings shame is the grief of her father. She that is bold brings shame upon father and husband; And she will be despised of them both. Unseasonable discourse is as music in mourning; But stripes and correction are wisdom at every season. He that teaches a fool is as one that glues a potsherd together; Even as one that wakes a sleeper out of a deep sleep. He that discourseth to a fool is as one discoursing to a man that slumbereth; And at the end he will say, What is it? Weep for the dead, for light has failed him; And weep for a fool, for understanding has failed him: Weep more sweetly for the dead, because he has found rest; But the life of the fool is worse than death. Seven days are the days of mourning for the dead; But for a fool and an ungodly man, all the days of his life. Talk not much with a foolish man, And go not to one that has no understanding: Beware of him, lest you have trouble; And so you shall not be defiled in his onslaught: Turn away from him, and you will find rest; And so you shall not be wearied in his madness. What shall be heavier than lead? And what is the name thereof, but a fool? Sand, and salt, and a mass of iron, is easier to bear, Than a man without understanding. Timber girded and bound into a building will not be loosed with shaking: So a heart established in due season on well advised counsel will not be afraid. A heart settled upon a thoughtful understanding Is as an ornament of plaister on a polished wall. Pales set on a high place will not stand against the wind: So a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool will not stand against any fear. He that pricks the eye will make tears to fall; And he that pricks the heart makes it to show feeling. Whoso casts a stone at birds frays them away; And he that upbraids a friend will dissolve friendship. If you have drawn a sword against a friend, despair not; For there may be a returning. If you have opened your mouth against a friend, fear not; For there may be a reconciling; Except it be for upbraiding, and arrogance, and disclosing of a secret, and a treacherous blow: For these things every friend will flee. Gain trust with your neighbor in his poverty, That in his prosperity you may have gladness: Abide stedfast to him in the time of his affliction, That you may be heir with him in his inheritance. Before fire is the vapor and smoke of a furnace; So revilings before bloodshed. I will not be ashamed to shelter a friend; And I will not hide myself from his face: And if any evil happen to me because of him, Every one that hears it will beware of him. Who shall set a watch over my mouth, And a seal of shrewdness upon my lips, That I fall not from it, and that my tongue destroy me not?

Lucas 21

E, olhando ele, viu os ricos lançarem as suas ofertas na arca do tesouro; E viu também uma pobre viúva lançar ali duas pequenas moedas; E disse: Em verdade vos digo que lançou mais do que todos, esta pobre viúva; Porque todos aqueles deitaram para as ofertas de Deus do que lhes sobeja; mas esta, da sua pobreza, deitou todo o sustento que tinha. E, dizendo alguns a respeito do templo, que estava ornado de formosas pedras e dádivas, disse: Quanto a estas coisas que vedes, dias virão em que não se deixará pedra sobre pedra, que não seja derrubada. E perguntaram-lhe, dizendo: Mestre, quando serão, pois, estas coisas? E que sinal haverá quando isto estiver para acontecer? Disse então ele: Vede não vos enganem, porque virão muitos em meu nome, dizendo: Sou eu, e o tempo está próximo. Não vades, portanto, após eles. E, quando ouvirdes de guerras e sedições, não vos assusteis. Porque é necessário que isto aconteça primeiro, mas o fim não será logo. Então lhes disse: Levantar-se-á nação contra nação, e reino contra reino; E haverá em vários lugares grandes terremotos, e fomes e pestilências; haverá também coisas espantosas, e grandes sinais do céu. Mas antes de todas estas coisas lançarão mão de vós, e vos perseguirão, entregando-vos às sinagogas e às prisões, e conduzindo-vos à presença de reis e presidentes, por amor do meu nome. E vos acontecerá isto para testemunho. Proponde, pois, em vossos corações não premeditar como haveis de responder; Porque eu vos darei boca e sabedoria a que não poderão resistir nem contradizer todos quantos se vos opuserem. E até pelos pais, e irmãos, e parentes, e amigos sereis entregues; e matarão alguns de vós. E de todos sereis odiados por causa do meu nome. Mas não perecerá um único cabelo da vossa cabeça. Na vossa paciência possuí as vossas almas. Mas, quando virdes Jerusalém cercada de exércitos, sabei então que é chegada a sua desolação. Então, os que estiverem na Judéia, fujam para os montes; os que estiverem no meio da cidade, saiam; e os que nos campos não entrem nela. Porque dias de vingança são estes, para que se cumpram todas as coisas que estão escritas. Mas ai das grávidas, e das que criarem naqueles dias! porque haverá grande aperto na terra, e ira sobre este povo. E cairão ao fio da espada, e para todas as nações serão levados cativos; e Jerusalém será pisada pelos gentios, até que os tempos dos gentios se completem. E haverá sinais no sol e na lua e nas estrelas; e na terra angústia das nações, em perplexidade pelo bramido do mar e das ondas. Homens desmaiando de terror, na expectação das coisas que sobrevirão ao mundo; porquanto as virtudes do céu serão abaladas. E então verão vir o Filho do homem numa nuvem, com poder e grande glória. Ora, quando estas coisas começarem a acontecer, olhai para cima e levantai as vossas cabeças, porque a vossa redenção está próxima. E disse-lhes uma parábola: Olhai para a figueira, e para todas as árvores; Quando já têm rebentado, vós sabeis por vós mesmos, vendo-as, que perto está já o verão. Assim também vós, quando virdes acontecer estas coisas, sabei que o reino de Deus está perto. Em verdade vos digo que não passará esta geração até que tudo aconteça. Passará o céu e a terra, mas as minhas palavras não hão de passar. E olhai por vós, não aconteça que os vossos corações se carreguem de glutonaria, de embriaguez, e dos cuidados da vida, e venha sobre vós de improviso aquele dia. Porque virá como um laço sobre todos os que habitam na face de toda a terra. Vigiai, pois, em todo o tempo, orando, para que sejais havidos por dignos de evitar todas estas coisas que hão de acontecer, e de estar em pé diante do Filho do homem. E de dia ensinava no templo, e à noite, saindo, ficava no monte chamado das Oliveiras. E todo o povo ia ter com ele ao templo, de manhã cedo, para o ouvir.

O Lord, Father and Master of my life, Abandon me not to their counsel: Suffer me not to fall by them. Who will set scourges over my thought, And a discipline of wisdom over my heart? That they spare me not for my ignorances, And my heart pass not by their sins: That my ignorances be not multiplied, And my sins abound not; And I will fall before my adversaries, And my enemy rejoice over me. O Lord, Father and God of my life, Give me not a proud look, And turn away concupiscense from me. Let not greediness and chambering overtake me; And give me not over to a shameless mind. Hear you⌃, my children, the discipline of the mouth; And he that keeps it will not be taken. The sinner will be overtaken in his lips; And the reviler and the proud man will stumble therein. Accustom not your mouth to an oath; And be not accustomed to the naming of the Holy One. For as a servant that is continually scourged will not lack a bruise, So he also that swears and names God continually will not be cleansed from sin. A man of many oaths will be filled with iniquity; And the scourge will not depart from his house: If he shall offend, his sin will be upon him; And if he disregard it, he has sinned doubly; And if he has sworn in vain, he will not be justified; For his house will be filled with calamities. There is a manner of speech that is clothed about with death: Let it not be found in the heritage of Jacob; For all these things will be far from the godly, And they will not wallow in sins. Accustom not your mouth to gross rudeness, For therein is the word of sin. Remember your father and your mother, For you sit in the midst of great men; That you be not forgetful before them, And become a fool by your custom; So will you wish that you had not been born, And curse the day of your nativity. A man that is accustomed to words of reproach Will not be corrected all the days of his life. Two sorts of men multiply sins, And the third will bring wrath: A hot mind, as a burning fire, will not be quenched till it be consumed: A fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease till he has burned out the fire. All bread is sweet to a fornicator: He will not leave off till he die. A man that goes astray from his own bed, Saying in his heart, Who sees me? Darkness is round about me, and the walls hide me, And no man sees me; of whom am I afraid? The Most High will not remember my sins; —And the eyes of men are his terror, And he knows not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, Beholding all the ways of men, And looking into secret places. All things were known to him or ever they were created; And in like manner also after they were perfected. This man will be punished in the streets of the city; And where he suspected not he will be taken. So also a wife that leaves her husband, And brings in an heir by a stranger. For first, she was disobedient in the law of the Most High; And secondly, she trespassed against her own husband; And thirdly, she played the adulteress in whoredom, And brought in children by a stranger. She shall be brought out into the congregation; And upon her children will there be visitation. Her children will not spread into roots, And her branches will bear no fruit. She will leave her memory for a curse; And her reproach will not be blotted out. And those who are left behind will know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, And nothing sweeter than to take heed to the commandments of the Lord.

1 Tessalonicenses 1

Paulo, e Silvano, e Timóteo, à igreja dos tessalonicenses em Deus, o Pai, e no Senhor Jesus Cristo: Graça e paz tenhais de Deus nosso Pai e do Senhor Jesus Cristo. Sempre damos graças a Deus por vós todos, fazendo menção de vós em nossas orações, Lembrando-nos sem cessar da obra da vossa fé, do trabalho do amor, e da paciência da esperança em nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, diante de nosso Deus e Pai, Sabendo, amados irmãos, que a vossa eleição é de Deus; Porque o nosso evangelho não foi a vós somente em palavras, mas também em poder, e no Espírito Santo, e em muita certeza, como bem sabeis quais fomos entre vós, por amor de vós. E vós fostes feitos nossos imitadores, e do Senhor, recebendo a palavra em muita tribulação, com gozo do Espírito Santo. De maneira que fostes exemplo para todos os fiéis na macedônia e Acaia. Porque por vós soou a palavra do Senhor, não somente na macedônia e Acaia, mas também em todos os lugares a vossa fé para com Deus se espalhou, de tal maneira que já dela não temos necessidade de falar coisa alguma; Porque eles mesmos anunciam de nós qual a entrada que tivemos para convosco, e como dos ídolos vos convertestes a Deus, para servir o Deus vivo e verdadeiro, E esperar dos céus o seu Filho, a quem ressuscitou dentre os mortos, a saber, Jesus, que nos livra da ira futura.
