The pride of the height is the firmament in its clearness, The appearance of heaven, in the spectacle of its glory. The sun when he appears, bringing tidings as he goes forth, Is a marvelous instrument, the work of the Most High: At his noon he dries up the country, And who shall stand against his burning heat? A man blowing a furnace is in works of heat, But the sun three times more, burning up the mountains: Breathing out fiery vapours, And sending forth bright beams, he dims the eyes. Great is the Lord that made him; And at his word he hastens his course. The moon also is in all things for her season, For a declaration of times, and a sign of the world. From the moon is the sign of the feast day; A light that waneth when she is come to the full. The month is called after her name, Increasing wonderfully in her changing; An instrument of the army on high, Shining forth in the firmament of heaven; The beauty of heaven, the glory of the stars, An ornament giving light in the highest places of the Lord. At the word of the Holy One they will stand in due order, And they will not faint in their watches. Look upon the rainbow, and praise him that made it; Exceeding beautiful in the brightness thereof. It encircles the heaven round about with a circle of glory; The hands of the Most High have stretched it. By his commandment he makes the snow to fall apace, And sends swiftly the lightnings of his judgement. By reason thereof the treasure-houses are opened; And clouds fly forth as fowls. By his mighty power he makes strong the clouds, And the hailstones are broken small: And at his appearing the mountains will be shaken, And at his will the south wind will blow. The voice of his thunder makes the earth to travail; So does the northern storm and the whirlwind: As birds flying down he sprinkleth the snow; And as the lighting of the locust is the falling down thereof: The eye will marvel at the beauty of its whiteness, And the heart will be astonished at the raining of it. The hoar frost also he pours on the earth as salt; And when it is congealed, it is as points of thorns. The cold north wind shall blow, And the ice shall be congealed on the water: It shall lodge upon every gathering together of water, And the water shall put on as it were a breastplate. It shall devour the mountains, and burn up the wilderness, And consume the green herb as fire. A mist coming speedily is the healing of all things; A dew coming after heat shall bring cheerfulness. By his counsel he has stilled the deep, And planted islands therein. They that sail on the sea tell of the danger thereof; And when we hear it with our ears, we marvel. Therein be also those strange and wondrous works, Variety of all that has life, the race of sea-monsters. By reason of him his end has success, And by his word all things consist. We may say many things, yet shall we not attain; And the sum of our words is, He is all. How shall we have strength to glorify him? For he is himself the great one above all his works. The Lord is terrible and exceeding great; And marvelous is his power. When you⌃ glorify the Lord, exalt him as much as you⌃ can; For even yet will he exceed: And when you⌃ exalt him, put forth your full strength: Be not weary; for you⌃ will never attain. Who has seen him, that he may declare him? And who shall magnify him as he is? Many things are hidden greater than these; For we have seen but a few of his works. For the Lord made all things; And to the godly gave he wisdom.

Oração da manhã — segunda leitura

João 7

E depois disto Jesus andava pela Galiléia, e já não queria andar pela Judéia, pois os judeus procuravam matá-lo. E estava próxima a festa dos judeus, a dos tabernáculos. Disseram-lhe, pois, seus irmãos: Sai daqui, e vai para a Judéia, para que também os teus discípulos vejam as obras que fazes. Porque não há ninguém que procure ser conhecido que faça coisa alguma em oculto. Se fazes estas coisas, manifesta-te ao mundo. Porque nem mesmo seus irmãos criam nele. Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus: Ainda não é chegado o meu tempo, mas o vosso tempo sempre está pronto. O mundo não vos pode odiar, mas ele me odeia a mim, porquanto dele testifico que as suas obras são más. Subi vós a esta festa; eu não subo ainda a esta festa, porque ainda o meu tempo não está cumprido. E, havendo-lhes dito isto, ficou na Galiléia. Mas, quando seus irmãos já tinham subido à festa, então subiu ele também, não manifestamente, mas como em oculto. Ora, os judeus procuravam-no na festa, e diziam: Onde está ele? E havia grande murmuração entre a multidão a respeito dele. Diziam alguns: Ele é bom. E outros diziam: Não, antes engana o povo. Todavia ninguém falava dele abertamente, por medo dos judeus. Mas, no meio da festa subiu Jesus ao templo, e ensinava. E os judeus maravilhavam-se, dizendo: Como sabe este letras, não as tendo aprendido? Jesus lhes respondeu, e disse: A minha doutrina não é minha, mas daquele que me enviou. Se alguém quiser fazer a vontade dele, pela mesma doutrina conhecerá se ela é de Deus, ou se eu falo de mim mesmo. Quem fala de si mesmo busca a sua própria glória; mas o que busca a glória daquele que o enviou, esse é verdadeiro, e não há nele injustiça. Não vos deu Moisés a lei? e nenhum de vós observa a lei. Por que procurais matar-me? A multidão respondeu, e disse: Tens demônio; quem procura matar-te? Respondeu Jesus, e disse-lhes: Fiz uma só obra, e todos vos maravilhais. Pelo motivo de que Moisés vos deu a circuncisão (não que fosse de Moisés, mas dos pais), no sábado circuncidais um homem. Se o homem recebe a circuncisão no sábado, para que a lei de Moisés não seja quebrantada, indignais-vos contra mim, porque no sábado curei de todo um homem? Não julgueis segundo a aparência, mas julgai segundo a reta justiça. Então alguns dos de Jerusalém diziam: Não é este o que procuram matar? E ei-lo aí está falando abertamente, e nada lhe dizem. Porventura sabem verdadeiramente os príncipes que de fato este é o Cristo? Todavia bem sabemos de onde este é; mas, quando vier o Cristo, ninguém saberá de onde ele é. Clamava, pois, Jesus no templo, ensinando, e dizendo: Vós conheceis-me, e sabeis de onde sou; e eu não vim de mim mesmo, mas aquele que me enviou é verdadeiro, o qual vós não conheceis. Mas eu conheço-o, porque dele sou e ele me enviou. Procuravam, pois, prendê-lo, mas ninguém lançou mão dele, porque ainda não era chegada a sua hora. E muitos da multidão creram nele, e diziam: Quando o Cristo vier, fará ainda mais sinais do que os que este tem feito? Os fariseus ouviram que a multidão murmurava dele estas coisas; e os fariseus e os principais dos sacerdotes mandaram servidores para o prenderem. Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus: Ainda um pouco de tempo estou convosco, e depois vou para aquele que me enviou. Vós me buscareis, e não me achareis; e onde eu estou, vós não podeis vir. Disseram, pois, os judeus uns para os outros: Para onde irá este, que o não acharemos? Irá porventura para os dispersos entre os gregos, e ensinará os gregos? Que palavra é esta que disse: Buscar-me-eis, e não me achareis; e: Aonde eu estou vós não podeis ir? E no último dia, o grande dia da festa, Jesus pôs-se em pé, e clamou, dizendo: Se alguém tem sede, venha a mim, e beba. Quem crê em mim, como diz a Escritura, rios de água viva correrão do seu ventre. E isto disse ele do Espírito que haviam de receber os que nele cressem; porque o Espírito Santo ainda não fora dado, por ainda Jesus não ter sido glorificado. Então muitos da multidão, ouvindo esta palavra, diziam: Verdadeiramente este é o Profeta. Outros diziam: Este é o Cristo; mas diziam outros: Vem, pois, o Cristo da Galiléia? Não diz a Escritura que o Cristo vem da descendência de Davi, e de Belém, da aldeia de onde era Davi? Assim entre o povo havia dissensão por causa dele. E alguns deles queriam prendê-lo, mas ninguém lançou mão dele. E os servidores foram ter com os principais dos sacerdotes e fariseus; e eles lhes perguntaram: Por que não o trouxestes? Responderam os servidores: Nunca homem algum falou assim como este homem. Responderam-lhes, pois, os fariseus: Também vós fostes enganados? Creu nele porventura algum dos principais ou dos fariseus? Mas esta multidão, que não sabe a lei, é maldita. Nicodemos, que era um deles (o que de noite fora ter com Jesus), disse-lhes: Porventura condena a nossa lei um homem sem primeiro o ouvir e ter conhecimento do que faz? Responderam eles, e disseram-lhe: És tu também da Galiléia? Examina, e verás que da Galiléia nenhum profeta surgiu. E cada um foi para sua casa.

Let us now praise famous men, And our fathers that became the father of us. The Lord manifested in them great glory, Even his mighty power from the beginning. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, And were men renowned for their power, Giving counsel by their understanding, Such as have brought tidings in prophecies: Leaders of the people by their counsels, And by their understanding men of learning for the people; Wise were their words in their instruction: Such as sought out musical tunes, And set forth verses in writing: Rich men furnished with ability, Living peaceably in their habitations: All these were honored in their generations, And were a glory in their days. There be of them, that have left a name behind them, To declare their praises. And some there be, which have no memorial; Who are perished as though they had not been, And are become as though they had not been born; And their children after them. But these were men of mercy, Whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. With their seed shall remain continually a good inheritance; Their children are within the covenants. Their seed stands fast, And their children for their sakes. Their seed shall remain forever, And their glory shall not be blotted out. Their bodies were buried in peace, And their name lives to all generations. Peoples will declare their wisdom, And the congregation tells out their praise. Enoch pleased the Lord, and was translated, Being an example of repentance to all generations. Noah was found perfect and righteous; In the season of wrath he was taken in exchange for the world; Therefore was there left a remnant to the earth, When the flood came. Everlasting covenants were made with him, That all flesh should no more be blotted out by a flood. Abraham was a great father of a multitude of nations; And there was none found like him in glory; Who kept the law of the Most High, And was taken into covenant with him: In his flesh he established the covenant; And when he was proved, he was found faithful. Therefore he assured him by an oath, That the nations should be blessed in his seed; That he would multiply him as the dust of the earth, And exalt his seed as the stars, And cause them to inherit from sea to sea, And from the River to the utmost part of the earth. In Isaac also did he establish likewise, for Abraham his father’s sake, The blessing of all men, and the covenant: And he made it rest upon the head of Jacob; He acknowledged him in his blessings, And gave to him by inheritance, And divided his portions; Among twelve tribes did he part them.

1 Timóteo 4

Mas o Espírito expressamente diz que nos últimos tempos apostatarão alguns da fé, dando ouvidos a espíritos enganadores, e a doutrinas de demônios; Pela hipocrisia de homens que falam mentiras, tendo cauterizada a sua própria consciência; Proibindo o casamento, e ordenando a abstinência dos alimentos que Deus criou para os fiéis, e para os que conhecem a verdade, a fim de usarem deles com ações de graças; Porque toda a criatura de Deus é boa, e não há nada que rejeitar, sendo recebido com ações de graças. Porque pela palavra de Deus e pela oração é santificada. Propondo estas coisas aos irmãos, serás bom ministro de Jesus Cristo, criado com as palavras da fé e da boa doutrina que tens seguido. Mas rejeita as fábulas profanas e de velhas, e exercita-te a ti mesmo em piedade; Porque o exercício corporal para pouco aproveita, mas a piedade para tudo é proveitosa, tendo a promessa da vida presente e da que há de vir. Esta palavra é fiel e digna de toda a aceitação; Porque para isto trabalhamos e somos injuriados, pois esperamos no Deus vivo, que é o Salvador de todos os homens, principalmente dos fiéis. Manda estas coisas e ensina-as. Ninguém despreze a tua mocidade; mas sê o exemplo dos fiéis, na palavra, no trato, no amor, no espírito, na fé, na pureza. Persiste em ler, exortar e ensinar, até que eu vá. Não desprezes o dom que há em ti, o qual te foi dado por profecia, com a imposição das mãos do presbitério. Medita estas coisas; ocupa-te nelas, para que o teu aproveitamento seja manifesto a todos. Tem cuidado de ti mesmo e da doutrina. Persevera nestas coisas; porque, fazendo isto, te salvarás, tanto a ti mesmo como aos que te ouvem.
