When those who were in the tents heard, they were amazed at what happened. Trembling and fear fell upon them, and no man dared stay any more in the sight of his neighbor, but rushing out with one accord, they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill country. Those who had encamped in the hill country round about Bethulia fled away. And then the children of Israel, every one who was a warrior among them, rushed out upon them. Ozias sent to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Chobai, and Chola, and to every coast of Israel, to tell about the things that had been accomplished, and that all should rush upon their enemies to destroy them. But wnen the children of Israel heard, they all fell upon them with one accord, and struck them to Chobai. Yes, and in like manner also they of Jerusalem and of all the hill country came (for men had told them about what happened in their enemies’ camp), and those who were in Gilead and in Galilee fell upon their flank with a great slaughter, until they were past Damascus and its borders. The rest of the people who lived at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Asshur, and plundered them, and were enriched exceedingly. The children of Israel returned from the slaughter, and got possession of that which remained. The villages and the cities that were in the hill country and in the plain country, took many spoils; for there was an exceedingly great supply. Joakim the high priest, and the elders of the children of Israel whe lived in Jerusalem, came to see the good things which the Lord had showed to Israel, and to see Judith, and to salute her. When they came to her, they all blessed her with one accord, and said to her, “You are the exaltation of Jerusalem! You are the great glory of Israel! You are the great rejoicing of our race! You have done all these things by your hand. You have done with Israel the things that are good, and God is pleased with it. Blessed be you with the Almighty Lord for evermore.” And all the people said, “Amen!” And the people plundered the camp for the space of thirty days: and they gave Holofernes’ tent to Judith, along with all his silver cups, his beds, his bowls, and all his furniture. She took them, and placed them on her mule, and prepared her wagons, and heaped them on it. And all the women of Israel ran together to see her; and they blessed her, and made a dance among them for her. She took branches in her hand, and distributed them to the women who were with her. The they made themselves garlands of olive, she and those who were with her, and she went before all the people in the dance, leading all the women. All the men of Israel followed in their armor with garlands, and with songs in their mouths.

Marcos 15

E, logo ao amanhecer, os principais dos sacerdotes, com os anciãos, e os escribas, e todo o Sinédrio, tiveram conselho; e, ligando Jesus, o levaram e entregaram a Pilatos. E Pilatos lhe perguntou: Tu és o Rei dos Judeus? E ele, respondendo, disse-lhe: Tu o dizes. E os principais dos sacerdotes o acusavam de muitas coisas; porém ele nada respondia. E Pilatos o interrogou outra vez, dizendo: Nada respondes? Vê quantas coisas testificam contra ti. Mas Jesus nada mais respondeu, de maneira que Pilatos se maravilhava. Ora, no dia da festa costumava soltar-lhes um preso qualquer que eles pedissem. E havia um chamado Barrabás, que, preso com outros amotinado- res, tinha num motim cometido uma morte. E a multidão, dando gritos, começou a pedir que fizesse como sempre lhes tinha feito. E Pilatos lhes respondeu, dizendo: Quereis que vos solte o Rei dos Judeus? Porque ele bem sabia que por inveja os principais dos sacerdotes o tinham entregado. Mas os principais dos sacerdotes incitaram a multidão para que fosse solto antes Barrabás. E Pilatos, respondendo, lhes disse outra vez: Que quereis, pois, que faça daquele a quem chamais Rei dos Judeus? E eles tornaram a clamar: Crucifica-o. Mas Pilatos lhes disse: Mas que mal fez? E eles cada vez clamavam mais: Crucifica-o. Então Pilatos, querendo satisfazer a multidão, soltou-lhe Barrabás e, açoitado Jesus, o entregou para ser crucificado. E os soldados o levaram dentro à sala, que é a da audiência, e convocaram toda a coorte. E vestiram-no de púrpura, e tecendo uma coroa de espinhos, lha puseram na cabeça. E começaram a saudá-lo, dizendo: Salve, Rei dos Judeus! E feriram-no na cabeça com uma cana, e cuspiram nele e, postos de joelhos, o adoraram. E, havendo-o escarnecido, despiram-lhe a púrpura, e o vestiram com as suas próprias vestes; e o levaram para fora a fim de o crucificarem. E constrangeram um certo Simão, cireneu, pai de Alexandre e de Rufo, que por ali passava, vindo do campo, a que levasse a cruz. E levaram-no ao lugar doGólgota, que se traduz por lugar da Caveira. E deram-lhe a beber vinho com mirra, mas ele não o tomou. E, havendo-o crucificado, repartiram as suas vestes, lançando sobre elas sortes, para saber o que cada um levaria. E era a hora terceira, e o crucificaram. E por cima dele estava escrita a sua acusação: O REI DOS JUDEUS. E crucificaram com ele dois salteadores, um à sua direita, e outro à esquerda. E cumprindo-se a escritura que diz: E com os malfeitores foi contado. E os que passavam blasfemavam dele, meneando as suas cabeças, e dizendo: Ah! tu que derrubas o templo, e em três dias o edificas, Salva-te a ti mesmo, e desce da cruz. E da mesma maneira também os principais dos sacerdotes, com os escribas, diziam uns para os outros, zombando: Salvou os outros, e não pode salvar-se a si mesmo. O Cristo, o Rei de Israel, desça agora da cruz, para que o vejamos e acreditemos. Também os que com ele foram crucificados o injuriavam. E, chegada a hora sexta, houve trevas sobre toda a terra até a hora nona. E, à hora nona, Jesus exclamou com grande voz, dizendo: Eloí, Eloí, lamá sabactâni? que, traduzido, é: Deus meu, Deus meu, por que me desamparaste? E alguns dos que ali estavam, ouvindo isto, diziam: Eis que chama por Elias. E um deles correu a embeber uma esponja em vinagre e, pondo-a numa cana, deu-lho a beber, dizendo: Deixai, vejamos se virá Elias tirá-lo. E Jesus, dando um grande brado, expirou. E o véu do templo se rasgou em dois, de alto a baixo. E o centurião, que estava defronte dele, vendo que assim clamando expirara, disse: Verdadeiramente este homem era o Filho de Deus. E também ali estavam algumas mulheres, olhando de longe, entre as quais também Maria Madalena, e Maria, mãe de Tiago, o menor, e de José, e Salomé; As quais também o seguiam, e o serviam, quando estava na Galiléia; e muitas outras, que tinham subido com ele a Jerusalém. E, chegada a tarde, porquanto era o dia da preparação, isto é, a véspera do sábado, Chegou José de Arimatéia, senador honrado, que também esperava o reino de Deus, e ousadamente foi a Pilatos, e pediu o corpo de Jesus. E Pilatos se maravilhou de que já estivesse morto. E, chamando o centurião, perguntou-lhe se já havia muito que tinha morrido. E, tendo-se certificado pelo centurião, deu o corpo a José; O qual comprara um lençol fino, e, tirando-o da cruz, o envolveu nele, e o depositou num sepulcro lavrado numa rocha; e revolveu uma pedra para a porta do sepulcro. E Maria Madalena e Maria, mãe de José, observavam onde o punham.

And Judith began to sing this song of thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang with loud voices this song of praise. Judith said, “Begin a song to my God with timbrels. Sing to my Lord with cymbals. Make melody to him psalm and praise. Exalt him, and call upon his name. For the Lord is the God that crushes battles. For in his armies in the midst of the people, he delivered me out of the hand of those who persecuted me. Asshur came out of the mountains from the north. He came with ten thousands of his army. Its multitude stopped the torrents. Their horsemen covered the hills. He said that he would burn up my borders, kill my young men with the sword, throw my nursing children to the ground, give my infants up as prey, and make my virgins a plunder. “The Almighty Lord brought them to nothing by the hand of a woman. For their mighty one did not fall by young men, neither did sons of the Titans strike him. Tall giants didn’t attack him, but Judith the daughter of Merari made him weak with the beauty of her countenance. “For she put off the apparel of her widowhood for the exaltation of those who were distressed in Israel. She anointed her face with ointment, bound her hair in a tiara, and took a linen garment to deceive him. Her sandal ravished his eye. Her beauty took his soul prisoner. The scimitar passed through his neck. “The Persians quaked at her daring. The Medes were daunted at her boldness. “Then my lowly ones shouted aloud. My weak ones were terrified and trembled for fear. They lifted up their voice, and they fled. The sons of ladies pierced them through, and wounded them as fugatives’ children. They perished by the battle of my Lord. “I will sing to my God a new song: O Lord, you are great and glorious, marvelous in strength, invincible. Let all your creation serve you; for you spoke, and they were made. You sent out your spirit, and it built them. There is no one who can resist your voice. For the mountains will be moved from their foundations with the waters, and the rocks will melt as wax at your presence: But you are yet merciful to those who fear you. For all sacrifice is little for a sweet savor, And all the fat is very little for a whole burnt offering to you; But he who fears the Lord is great continually. “Woe to the nations who rise up against my race! The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them in the day of judgement, to put fire and worms in their flesh; and they will weep and feel their pain forever.” Now when they came to Jerusalem, they worshipped God. When the people were purified, they offered their whole burnt offerings, their free will offerings, and their gifts. Judith dedicated all Holofernes’ stuff, which the people had given her, and gave the canopy, which she had taken for herself out of his bedchamber, for a gift to the Lord. And the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for three months, and Judith remained with them. But after these days, everyone departed to his own inheritance. Judith went away to Bethulia, and remained in her own possession, and was honorable in her time in all the land. Many desired her, and no man knew her all the days of her life, from the day that Manasses her husband died and was gathered to his people. She increased in greatness exceedingly; and she grew old in her husband’s house, to one hundred five years, and let her maid go free. Then she died in Bethulia. They buried her in the cave of her husband Manasses. The house of Israel mourned for her seven days. She distributed her goods before she died to all those who were nearest of kin to Manasses her husband, and to those who were nearest of her own kindred. There was no one that made the children of Israel afraid any more in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.

2 Coríntios 11

Quisera eu me suportásseis um pouco na minha loucura! Suportai-me, porém, ainda. Porque estou zeloso de vós com zelo de Deus; porque vos tenho preparado para vos apresentar como uma virgem pura a um marido, a saber, a Cristo. Mas temo que, assim como a serpente enganou Eva com a sua astúcia, assim também sejam de alguma sorte corrompidos os vossos sentidos, e se apartem da simplicidade que há em Cristo. Porque, se alguém for pregar-vos outro Jesus que nós não temos pregado, ou se recebeis outro espírito que não recebestes, ou outro evangelho que não abraçastes, com razão o sofreríeis. Porque penso que em nada fui inferior aos mais excelentes apóstolos. E, se sou rude na palavra, não o sou contudo na ciência; mas já em todas as coisas nos temos feito conhecer totalmente entre vós. Pequei, porventura, humilhando-me a mim mesmo, para que vós fôsseis exaltados, porque de graça vos anunciei o evangelho de Deus? Outras igrejas despojei eu para vos servir, recebendo delas salário; e quando estava presente convosco, e tinha necessidade, a ninguém fui pesado. Porque os irmãos que vieram da macedônia supriram a minha necessidade; e em tudo me guardei de vos ser pesado, e ainda me guardarei. Como a verdade de Cristo está em mim, esta glória não me será impedida nas regiões da Acaia. Por quê? Porque não vos amo? Deus o sabe. Mas o que eu faço o farei, para cortar ocasião aos que buscam ocasião, a fim de que, naquilo em que se gloriam, sejam achados assim como nós. Porque tais falsos apóstolos são obreiros fraudulentos, transfigurando-se em apóstolos de Cristo. E não é maravilha, porque o próprio Satanás se transfigura em anjo de luz. Não é muito, pois, que os seus ministros se transfigurem em ministros da justiça; o fim dos quais será conforme as suas obras. Outra vez digo: Ninguém me julgue insensato, ou então recebei-me como insensato, para que também me glorie um pouco. O que digo, não o digo segundo o Senhor, mas como por loucura, nesta confiança de gloriar-me. Pois que muitos se gloriam segundo a carne, eu também me gloriarei. Porque, sendo vós sensatos, de boa mente tolerais os insensatos. Pois sois sofredores, se alguém vos põe em servidão, se alguém vos devora, se alguém vos apanha, se alguém se exalta, se alguém vos fere no rosto. Envergonhado o digo, como se nós fôssemos fracos, mas no que qualquer tem ousadia (com insensatez falo) também eu tenho ousadia. São hebreus? também eu. São israelitas? também eu. São descendência de Abraão? também eu. São ministros de Cristo? (falo como fora de mim) eu ainda mais: em trabalhos, muito mais; em açoites, mais do que eles; em prisões, muito mais; em perigo de morte, muitas vezes. Recebi dos judeus cinco quarentenas de açoites menos um. Três vezes fui açoitado com varas, uma vez fui apedrejado, três vezes sofri naufrágio, uma noite e um dia passei no abismo; Em viagens muitas vezes, em perigos de rios, em perigos de salteadores, em perigos dos da minha nação, em perigos dos gentios, em perigos na cidade, em perigos no deserto, em perigos no mar, em perigos entre os falsos irmãos; Em trabalhos e fadiga, em vigílias muitas vezes, em fome e sede, em jejum muitas vezes, em frio e nudez. Além das coisas exteriores, me oprime cada dia o cuidado de todas as igrejas. Quem enfraquece, que eu também não enfraqueça? Quem se escandaliza, que eu me não abrase? Se convém gloriar-me, gloriar-me-ei no que diz respeito à minha fraqueza. O Deus e Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, que é eternamente bendito, sabe que não minto. Em Damasco, o que governava sob o rei Aretas pôs guardas às portas da cidade dos damascenos, para me prenderem. E fui descido num cesto por uma janela da muralha; e assim escapei das suas mãos.
