Oração da manhã — primeira leitura

Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.
Oração da manhã — segunda leitura
E, naqueles dias, levantando-se Maria, foi apressada às montanhas, a uma cidade de Judá, E entrou em casa de Zacarias, e saudou a Isabel. E aconteceu que, ao ouvir Isabel a saudação de Maria, a criancinha saltou no seu ventre; e Isabel foi cheia do Espírito Santo. E exclamou com grande voz, e disse: Bendita és tu entre as mulheres, e bendito o fruto do teu ventre. E de onde me provém isto a mim, que venha visitar-me a mãe do meu Senhor? Pois eis que, ao chegar aos meus ouvidos a voz da tua saudação, a criancinha saltou de alegria no meu ventre. Bem-aventurada a que creu, pois hão de cumprir-se as coisas que da parte do Senhor lhe foram ditas. Disse então Maria: A minha alma engrandece ao Senhor, E o meu espírito se alegra em Deus meu Salvador; Porque atentou na baixeza de sua serva; Pois eis que desde agora todas as gerações me chamarão bem-aventurada, Porque me fez grandes coisas o Poderoso; E santo é seu nome. E a sua misericórdia é de geração em geração Sobre os que o temem. Com o seu braço agiu valorosamente; Dissipou os soberbos no pensamento de seus corações. Depôs dos tronos os poderosos, E elevou os humildes. Encheu de bens os famintos, E despediu vazios os ricos. Auxiliou a Israel seu servo, Recordando-se da sua misericórdia; Como falou a nossos pais, Para com Abraão e a sua posteridade, para sempre. E Maria ficou com ela quase três meses, e depois voltou para sua casa. E completou-se para Isabel o tempo de dar à luz, e teve um filho. E os seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram que tinha Deus usado para com ela de grande misericórdia, e alegraram-se com ela. E aconteceu que, ao oitavo dia, vieram circuncidar o menino, e lhe chamavam Zacarias, o nome de seu pai. E, respondendo sua mãe, disse: Não, porém será chamado João. E disseram-lhe: Ninguém há na tua parentela que se chame por este nome. E perguntaram por acenos ao pai como queria que lhe chamassem. E, pedindo ele uma tabuinha de escrever, escreveu, dizendo: O seu nome é João. E todos se maravilharam. E logo a boca se lhe abriu, e a língua se lhe soltou; e falava, louvando a Deus. E veio temor sobre todos os seus vizinhos, e em todas as montanhas da Judéia foram divulgadas todas estas coisas. E todos os que as ouviam as conservavam em seus corações, dizendo: Quem será, pois, este menino? E a mão do Senhor estava com ele. E Zacarias, seu pai, foi cheio do Espírito Santo, e profetizou, dizendo: Bendito o Senhor Deus de Israel, Porque visitou e remiu o seu povo, E nos levantou uma salvação poderosa Na casa de Davi seu servo. Como falou pela boca dos seus santos profetas, desde o princípio do mundo; Para nos livrar dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam; Para manifestar misericórdia a nossos pais, E lembrar-se da sua santa aliança, E do juramento que jurou a Abraão nosso pai, De conceder-nos que, Libertados da mão de nossos inimigos, o serviríamos sem temor, Em santidade e justiça perante ele, todos os dias da nossa vida. E tu, ó menino, serás chamado profeta do Altíssimo, Porque hás de ir ante a face do Senhor, a preparar os seus caminhos; Para dar ao seu povo conhecimento da salvação, Na remissão dos seus pecados; Pelas entranhas da misericórdia do nosso Deus, Com que o oriente do alto nos visitou; Para iluminar aos que estão assentados em trevas e na sombra da morte; A fim de dirigir os nossos pés pelo caminho da paz. E o menino crescia, e se robustecia em espírito. E esteve nos desertos até ao dia em que havia de mostrar-se a Israel.

Then shall the righteous man stand in great boldness Before the face of those who afflicted him, And those who make his labors of no account. When they see it, they will be troubled with terrible fear, And will be amazed at the marvel of God’s salvation. They will say within themselves repenting, And for distress of spirit will they groan, This was he whom aforetime we had in derision, And made a parable of reproach: We fools accounted his life madness, And his end without honor: How was he counted among sons of God? And how is his lot among saints? Verily we went astray from the way of truth, And the light of righteousness shined not for us, And the sun rose not for us. We took our fill of the paths of lawlessness and destruction, And we journeyed through trackless deserts, But the way of the Lord we knew not. What did our arrogancy profit us? And what good have riches and vaunting brought us? Those things all passed away as a shadow, And as a message that runs by: As a ship passing through the billowy water, Whereof, when it is gone by, there is no trace to be found, Neither pathway of its keel in the billows: Or as when a bird flieth through the air, No token of her passage is found, But the light wind, lashed with the stroke of her pinions, And tore asunder with the violent rush of the moving wings, is passed through, And afterwards no sign of her coming is found therein: Or as when an arrow is shot at a mark, The air disparted closeth up again immediately, So that men know not where it passed through: So we also, as soon as we were born, ceased to be; And of virtue we had no sign to show, But in our wickedness we were utterly consumed. Because the hope of the ungodly man is as chaff carried by the wind, And as foam vanishing before a tempest; And is scattered as smoke is scattered by the wind, And passes by as the remembrance of a guest that waits but a day. But the righteous live forever, And in the Lord is their reward, And the care for them with the Most High. Therefore will they receive the crown of royal dignity And the diadem of beauty from the Lord’s hand; Because with his right hand will he cover them, And with his arm will he shield them. He will take his jealousy as complete armor, And will make the whole creation his weapons for vengeance on his enemies: He will put on righteousness as a breastplate, And will array himself with judgement unfeigned as with a helmet; He will take holiness as an invincible shield, And he will sharpen stern wrath for a sword: And the world will go forth with him to fight against his insensate foes. Shafts of lightning will fly with true aim, And from the clouds, as from a well drawn bow, will they leap to the mark. And as from an engine of war will be hurled hailstones full of wrath; The water of the sea will be angered against them, And rivers will sternly overwhelm them; A mighty blast will encounter them, And as a tempest will it winnow them away: And so will lawlessness make all the land desolate, And their evil-doing will overturn the thrones of princes.
Oração vespertina — segunda leitura
Paulo, apóstolo (não da parte dos homens, nem por homem algum, mas por Jesus Cristo, e por Deus Pai, que o ressuscitou dentre os mortos), E todos os irmãos que estão comigo, às igrejas da Galácia: Graça e paz da parte de Deus Pai e do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, O qual se deu a si mesmo por nossos pecados, para nos livrar do presente século mau, segundo a vontade de Deus nosso Pai, Ao qual seja dada glória para todo o sempre. Amém. Maravilho-me de que tão depressa passásseis daquele que vos chamou à graça de Cristo para outro evangelho; O qual não é outro, mas há alguns que vos inquietam e querem transtornar o evangelho de Cristo. Mas, ainda que nós mesmos ou um anjo do céu vos anuncie outro evangelho além do que já vos tenho anunciado, seja anátema. Assim, como já vo-lo dissemos, agora de novo também vo-lo digo. Se alguém vos anunciar outro evangelho além do que já recebestes, seja anátema. Porque, persuado eu agora a homens ou a Deus? ou procuro agradar a homens? Se estivesse ainda agradando aos homens, não seria servo de Cristo. Mas faço-vos saber, irmãos, que o evangelho que por mim foi anunciado não é segundo os homens. Porque não o recebi, nem aprendi de homem algum, mas pela revelação de Jesus Cristo. Porque já ouvistes qual foi antigamente a minha conduta no judaísmo, como sobremaneira perseguia a igreja de Deus e a assolava. E na minha nação excedia em judaísmo a muitos da minha idade, sendo extremamente zeloso das tradições de meus pais. Mas, quando aprouve a Deus, que desde o ventre de minha mãe me separou, e me chamou pela sua graça, Revelar seu Filho em mim, para que o pregasse entre os gentios, não consultei a carne nem o sangue, Nem tornei a Jerusalém, a ter com os que já antes de mim eram apóstolos, mas parti para a Arábia, e voltei outra vez a Damasco. Depois, passados três anos, fui a Jerusalém para ver a Pedro, e fiquei com ele quinze dias. E não vi a nenhum outro dos apóstolos, senão a Tiago, irmão do Senhor. Ora, acerca do que vos escrevo, eis que diante de Deus testifico que não minto. Depois fui para as partes da Síria e da Cilícia. E não era conhecido de vista das igrejas da Judéia, que estavam em Cristo; Mas somente tinham ouvido dizer: Aquele que já nos perseguiu anuncia agora a fé que antes destruía. E glorificavam a Deus a respeito de mim.
