There is a reproof that is not comely; And there is a man that keeps silence, and he is wise. How good is it to reprove, rather than to be angry; And he that makes confession will be kept back from hurt. As is the lust of an eunuch to deflower a virgin; So is he that executes judgements with violence. There is one that keeps silence, and is found wise; And there is one that is hated for his much talk. There is one that keeps silence, for he has no answer to make; And there is that keeps silence, as knowing his time. A wise man will be silent till his time come; But the braggart and fool will overpass his time. He that uses many words will be abhorred; And he that takes to himself authority therein will be hated. There is a prosperity that a man finds in misfortunes; And there is a gain that turns to loss. There is a gift that will not profit you; And there is a gift whose recompense is double. There is an abasement because of glory; And there is that has lifted up his head from a low estate. There is that buys much for a little, And pays for it again sevenfold. He that is wise in words will make himself beloved; But the pleasantries of fools will be wasted. The gift of a fool will not profit you; For his eyes are many instead of one. He will give little, and upbraid much; And he will open his mouth like a crier: Today he will lend, and tomorrow he will ask it again: Such an one is a hateful man. The fool will say, I have no friend, And I have no thanks for my good deeds; They that eat my bread are of evil tongue. How often, and of how many, will he be laughed to scorn! A slip on a pavement is better than a slip with the tongue; So the fall of the wicked will come speedily. A man without grace is as a tale out of season: It will be continually in the mouth of the ignorant. A wise sentence from a fool’s mouth will be rejected; For he will not speak it in its season. There is that is hindered from sinning through lack; And when he takes rest, he will not be troubled. There is that destroys his soul through bashfulness; And by a foolish countenance he will destroy it. There is that for bashfulness promises to his friend; And he makes him his enemy for nothing. A lie is a foul blot in a man: It will be continually in the mouth of the ignorant. A thief is better than a man that is continually lying: But they both will inherit destruction. The disposition of a liar is dishonor; And his shame is with him continually. He that is wise in words will advance himself; And one that is prudent will please great men. He that tils his land will raise his heap high; And he that pleases great men will get pardon for iniquity. Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise, And as a muzzle on the mouth, turn away reproofs. Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is out of sight, What profit is in them both? Better is a man that hides his folly Than a man that hides his wisdom.

Lucas 20

E aconteceu num daqueles dias que, estando ele ensinando o povo no templo, e anunciando o evangelho, sobrevieram os principais dos sacerdotes e os escribas com os anciãos, E falaram-lhe, dizendo: Dize-nos, com que autoridade fazes estas coisas? Ou, quem é que te deu esta autoridade? E, respondendo ele, disse-lhes: Também eu vos farei uma pergunta: Dizei-me pois: O batismo de João era do céu ou dos homens? E eles arrazoavam entre si, dizendo: Se dissermos: Do céu, ele nos dirá: Então por que o não crestes? E se dissermos: Dos homens; todo o povo nos apedrejará, pois têm por certo que João era profeta. E responderam que não sabiam de onde era. E Jesus lhes disse: Tampouco vos direi com que autoridade faço isto. E começou a dizer ao povo esta parábola: Certo homem plantou uma vinha, e arrendou-a a uns lavradores, e partiu para fora da terra por muito tempo; E no tempo próprio mandou um servo aos lavradores, para que lhe dessem dos frutos da vinha; mas os lavradores, espancando-o, mandaram-no vazio. E tornou ainda a mandar outro servo; mas eles, espancando também a este, e afrontando-o, mandaram-no vazio. E tornou ainda a mandar um terceiro; mas eles, ferindo também a este, o expulsaram. E disse o senhor da vinha: Que farei? Mandarei o meu filho amado; talvez que, vendo, o respeitem. Mas, vendo-o os lavradores, arrazoaram entre si, dizendo: Este é o herdeiro; vinde, matemo-lo, para que a herança seja nossa. E, lançando-o fora da vinha, o mataram. Que lhes fará, pois, o senhor da vinha? Irá, e destruirá estes lavradores, e dará a outros a vinha. E, ouvindo eles isto, disseram: Não seja assim! Mas ele, olhando para eles, disse: Que é isto, pois, que está escrito? A pedra, que os edificadores reprovaram, Essa foi feita cabeça da esquina. Qualquer que cair sobre aquela pedra ficará em pedaços, e aquele sobre quem ela cair será feito em pó. E os principais dos sacerdotes e os escribas procuravam lançar mão dele naquela mesma hora; mas temeram o povo; porque entenderam que contra eles dissera esta parábola. E, observando-o, mandaram espias, que se fingissem justos, para o apanharem nalguma palavra, e o entregarem à jurisdição e poder do presidente. E perguntaram-lhe, dizendo: Mestre, nós sabemos que falas e ensinas bem e retamente, e que não consideras a aparência da pessoa, mas ensinas com verdade o caminho de Deus. É-nos lícito dar tributo a César ou não? E, entendendo ele a sua astúcia, disse-lhes: Por que me tentais? Mostrai-me uma moeda. De quem tem a imagem e a inscrição? E, respondendo eles, disseram: De César. Disse-lhes então: Dai, pois, a César o que é de César, e a Deus o que é de Deus. E não puderam apanhá-lo em palavra alguma diante do povo; e, maravilhados da sua resposta, calaram-se. E, chegando-se alguns dos saduceus, que dizem não haver ressurreição, perguntaram-lhe, Dizendo: Mestre, Moisés nos deixou escrito que, se o irmão de algum falecer, tendo mulher, e não deixar filhos, o irmão dele tome a mulher, e suscite posteridade a seu irmão. Houve, pois, sete irmãos, e o primeiro tomou mulher, e morreu sem filhos; E tomou-a o segundo por mulher, e ele morreu sem filhos. E tomou-a o terceiro, e igualmente também os sete; e morreram, e nào deixaram filhos. E por último, depois de todos, morreu também a mulher. Portanto, na ressurreição, de qual deles será a mulher, pois que os sete por mulher a tiveram? E, respondendo Jesus, disse-lhes: Os filhos deste mundo casam-se, e dão-se em casamento; Mas os que forem havidos por dignos de alcançar o mundo vindouro, e a ressurreição dentre os mortos, nem hão de casar, nem ser dados em casamento; Porque já não podem mais morrer; pois são iguais aos anjos, e são filhos de Deus, sendo filhos da ressurreição. E que os mortos hão de ressuscitar também o mostrou Moisés junto da sarça, quando chama ao Senhor Deus de Abraão, e Deus de Isaque, e Deus de Jacó. Ora, Deus não é Deus de mortos, mas de vivos; porque para ele vivem todos. E, respondendo alguns dos escribas, disseram: Mestre, disseste bem. E não ousavam perguntar-lhe mais coisa alguma. E ele lhes disse: Como dizem que o Cristo é filho de Davi? Visto como o mesmo Davi diz no livro dos Salmos: Disse o SENHOR ao meu Senhor: Assenta-te à minha direita, Até que eu ponha os teus inimigos por escabelo de teus pés. Se Davi lhe chama Senhor, como é ele seu filho? E, ouvindo-o todo o povo, disse Jesus aos seus discípulos: Guardai-vos dos escribas, que querem andar com vestes compridas; e amam as saudações nas praças, e as principais cadeiras nas sinagogas, e os primeiros lugares nos banquetes; Que devoram as casas das viúvas, fazendo, por pretexto, largas orações. Estes receberão maior condenação.

My son, have you sinned? add no more thereto; And make supplication for your former sins. Flee from sin as from the face of a serpent; For if you draw near it will bite you: The teeth thereof are the teeth of a lion, Slaying the souls of men. All iniquity is as a two-edged sword; Its stroke has no healing. Terror and violence will lay waste riches; So the house of a haughty man will be laid waste. Supplication from a poor man’s mouth reaches to the ears of God, And his judgement comes speedily. One that hates reproof is in the path of the sinner; And he that fears the Lord will turn again in his heart. He that is mighty in tongue is known afar off: But the man of understanding knows when he slips. He that builds his house with other men’s money Is like one that gathers himself stones against winter. The congregation of wicked men is as tow wrapped together; And the end of them is a flame of fire. The way of sinners is made smooth with stones; And at the last end thereof is the pit of Hades. He that keeps the law becomes master of the intent thereof; And the end of the fear of the Lord is wisdom. He that is not clever will not be instructed; And there is a cleverness which makes bitterness to abound. The knowledge of a wise man will be made to abound as a flood; And his counsel as a fountain of life. The inward parts of a fool are like a broken vessel; And he will hold no knowledge. If a man of knowledge hear a wise word, He will commend it, and add to it: The dissolute man hears it, and it displeases him, And he puts it away behind his back. The discourse of a fool is like a burden in the way; But grace will be found on the lips of the wise. The mouth of the prudent man will be sought for in the congregation; And they will ponder his words in their heart. As a house that is destroyed, so is wisdom to a fool; And the knowledge of an unwise man is as talk without sense. Instruction is as fetters on the feet of an unwise man, And as manacles on the right hand. A fool lifts up his voice with laughter; But a clever man will scarce smile quietly. Instruction is to a prudent man as an ornament of gold, And as a bracelet upon his right arm. The foot of a fool is soon in another man’s house; But a man of experience will be ashamed of entering. A foolish man peepeth in from the door of another man’s house; But a man that is instructed will stand without. It is a lack of instruction in a man to listen at the door; But the prudent man will be grieved with the disgrace. The lips of strangers will be grieved at these things; But the words of prudent men will be weighed in the balance. The heart of fools is in their mouth; But the mouth of wise men is their heart. When the ungodly curses Satan, He curses his own soul. A whisperer defiles his own soul, And will be hated wherever he sojourneth.

Vós, senhores, fazei o que for de justiça e eqüidade a vossos servos, sabendo que também tendes um Senhor nos céus. Perseverai em oração, velando nela com ação de graças; Orando também juntamente por nós, para que Deus nos abra a porta da palavra, a fim de falarmos do mistério de Cristo, pelo qual estou também preso; Para que o manifeste, como me convém falar. Andai com sabedoria para com os que estão de fora, remindo o tempo. A vossa palavra seja sempre agradável, temperada com sal, para que saibais como vos convém responder a cada um. Tíquico, irmão amado e fiel ministro, e conservo no Senhor, vos fará saber o meu estado; O qual vos enviei para o mesmo fim, para que saiba do vosso estado e console os vossos corações; Juntamente com Onésimo, amado e fiel irmão, que é dos vossos; eles vos farão saber tudo o que por aqui se passa. Aristarco, que está preso comigo, vos saúda, e Marcos, o sobrinho de Barnabé, acerca do qual já recebestes mandamentos; se ele for ter convosco, recebei-o; E Jesus, chamado Justo; os quais são da circuncisão; são estes unicamente os meus cooperadores no reino de Deus; e para mim têm sido consolação. Saúda-vos Epafras, que é dos vossos, servo de Cristo, combatendo sempre por vós em orações, para que vos conserveis firmes, perfeitos e consumados em toda a vontade de Deus. Pois eu lhe dou testemunho de que tem grande zelo por vós, e pelos que estão em Laodicéia, e pelos que estão em Hierápolis. Saúda-vos Lucas, o médico amado, e Demas. Saudai aos irmãos que estão em Laodicéia e a Ninfa e à igreja que está em sua casa. E, quando esta epístola tiver sido lida entre vós, fazei que também o seja na igreja dos laodicenses, e a que veio de Laodicéia lede-a vós também. E dizei a Arquipo: Atenta para o ministério que recebeste no Senhor, para que o cumpras. Saudação de minha mão, de Paulo. Lembrai-vos das minhas prisões. A graça seja convosco. Amém.
