Not so he that has applied his soul, And meditateth in the law of the Most High; He will seek out the wisdom of all the ancients, And will be occupied in prophecies. He will keep the discourse of the men of renown, And will enter in amidst the subtleties of parables. He will seek out the hidden meaning of proverbs, And be conversant in the dark sayings of parables. He will serve among great men, And appear before him that rules: He will travel through the land of strange nations; For he has tried good things and evil among men. He will apply his heart to resort early to the Lord that made him, And will make supplication before the Most High, And will open his mouth in prayer, And will make supplication for his sins. If the great Lord will, He shall be filled with the spirit of understanding: He shall pour forth the words of his wisdom, And in prayer give thanks to the Lord. He shall direct his counsel and knowledge, And in his secrets shall he meditate. He shall show forth the instruction which he has been taught, And shall glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord. Many shall commend his understanding; And so long as the world endures, it shall not be blotted out: His memorial shall not depart, And his name shall live from generation to generation. Nations shall declare his wisdom, And the congregation shall tell out his praise. If he continue, he shall leave a greater name than a thousand: And if he die, he adds thereto. Yet more will I utter, which I have thought upon; And I am filled as the moon at the full. Hearken to me, you⌃ holy children, And bud forth as a rose growing by a brook of water: And give you⌃ a sweet savor as frankencense, And put forth flowers as a lily, Spread abroad a sweet smell, and sing a song of praise; Bless you⌃ the Lord for all his works. Magnify his name, And give utterance to his praise With the songs of your lips, and with harps; And thus shall you⌃ say when you⌃ utter his praise: All the works of the Lord are exceeding good, And every command shall be accomplished in his season. None can say, What is this? wherefore is that? For in his season they shall all be sought out. At his word the waters stood as a heap, And the receptacles of waters at the word of his mouth. At his command is all his good pleasure done; And there is none that shall hinder his salvation. The works of all flesh are before him; And it is not possible to be hid from his eyes. He sees from everlasting to everlasting; And there is nothing wonderful before him. None can say, What is this? wherefore is that? For all things are created for their uses. His blessing covered the dry land as a river, And saturated it as a flood. As he has turned the waters into saltness; So shall the heathen inherit his wrath. His ways are plain to the holy; So are they stumbling blocks to the wicked. Good things are created from the beginning for the good; So are evil things for sinners. The chief of all things necessary for the life of man Are water, and fire, and iron, and salt, And flour of wheat, and honey, and milk, The blood of the grape, and oil, and clothing. All these things are for good to the godly; So to the sinners they shall be turned into evil. There be winds that are created for vengeance, And in their fury lay on their scourges heavily; In the time of consummation they pour out their strength, And shall appease the wrath of him that made them. Fire, and hail, and famine, and death, All these are created for vengeance; Teeth of wild beasts, and scorpions and adders, And a sword punishing the ungodly to destruction. They shall rejoice in his commandment, And shall be made ready upon earth, when need is; And in their seasons they shall not transgress his word. Therefore from the beginning I was resolved, And I thought this, and left it in writing; All the works of the Lord are good: And he will supply every need in its season. And none can say, This is worse than that: For they shall all be well approved in their season. And now with all your heart and mouth sing you⌃ praises, And bless the name of the Lord.

Oração da manhã — segunda leitura

João 5

Depois disto havia uma festa entre os judeus, e Jesus subiu a Jerusalém. Ora, em Jerusalém há, próximo à porta das ovelhas, um tanque, chamado em hebreu Betesda, o qual tem cinco alpendres. Nestes jazia grande multidão de enfermos, cegos, mancos e ressicados, esperando o movimento da água. Porquanto um anjo descia em certo tempo ao tanque, e agitava a água; e o primeiro que ali descia, depois do movimento da água, sarava de qualquer enfermidade que tivesse. E estava ali um homem que, havia trinta e oito anos, se achava enfermo. E Jesus, vendo este deitado, e sabendo que estava neste estado havia muito tempo, disse-lhe: Queres ficar são? O enfermo respondeu-lhe: Senhor, não tenho homem algum que, quando a água é agitada, me ponha no tanque; mas, enquanto eu vou, desce outro antes de mim. Jesus disse-lhe: Levanta-te, toma o teu leito, e anda. Logo aquele homem ficou são; e tomou o seu leito, e andava. E aquele dia era sábado. Então os judeus disseram àquele que tinha sido curado: É sábado, não te é lícito levar o leito. Ele respondeu-lhes: Aquele que me curou, ele próprio disse: Toma o teu leito, e anda. Perguntaram-lhe, pois: Quem é o homem que te disse: Toma o teu leito, e anda? E o que fora curado não sabia quem era; porque Jesus se havia retirado, em razão de naquele lugar haver grande multidão. Depois Jesus encontrou-o no templo, e disse-lhe: Eis que já estás são; não peques mais, para que não te suceda alguma coisa pior. E aquele homem foi, e anunciou aos judeus que Jesus era o que o curara. E por esta causa os judeus perseguiram a Jesus, e procuravam matá-lo, porque fazia estas coisas no sábado. E Jesus lhes respondeu: Meu Pai trabalha até agora, e eu trabalho também. Por isso, pois, os judeus ainda mais procuravam matá-lo, porque não só quebrantava o sábado, mas também dizia que Deus era seu próprio Pai, fazendo-se igual a Deus. Mas Jesus respondeu, e disse-lhes: Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que o Filho por si mesmo não pode fazer coisa alguma, se o não vir fazer o Pai; porque tudo quanto ele faz, o Filho o faz igualmente. Porque o Pai ama o Filho, e mostra-lhe tudo o que faz; e ele lhe mostrará maiores obras do que estas, para que vos maravilheis. Pois, assim como o Pai ressuscita os mortos, e os vivifica, assim também o Filho vivifica aqueles que quer. E também o Pai a ninguém julga, mas deu ao Filho todo o juízo; Para que todos honrem o Filho, como honram o Pai. Quem não honra o Filho, não honra o Pai que o enviou. Na verdade, na verdade vos digo que quem ouve a minha palavra, e crê naquele que me enviou, tem a vida eterna, e não entrará em condenação, mas passou da morte para a vida. Em verdade, em verdade vos digo que vem a hora, e agora é, em que os mortos ouvirão a voz do Filho de Deus, e os que a ouvirem viverão. Porque, como o Pai tem a vida em si mesmo, assim deu também ao Filho ter a vida em si mesmo; E deu-lhe o poder de exercer o juízo, porque é o Filho do homem. Não vos maravilheis disto; porque vem a hora em que todos os que estão nos sepulcros ouvirão a sua voz. E os que fizeram o bem sairão para a ressurreição da vida; e os que fizeram o mal para a ressurreição da condenação. Eu não posso de mim mesmo fazer coisa alguma. Como ouço, assim julgo; e o meu juízo é justo, porque não busco a minha vontade, mas a vontade do Pai que me enviou. Se eu testifico de mim mesmo, o meu testemunho não é verdadeiro. Há outro que testifica de mim, e sei que o testemunho que ele dá de mim é verdadeiro. Vós mandastes mensageiros a João, e ele deu testemunho da verdade. Eu, porém, não recebo testemunho de homem; mas digo isto, para que vos salveis. Ele era a candeia que ardia e alumiava, e vós quisestes alegrar-vos por um pouco de tempo com a sua luz. Mas eu tenho maior testemunho do que o de João; porque as obras que o Pai me deu para realizar, as mesmas obras que eu faço, testificam de mim, que o Pai me enviou. E o Pai, que me enviou, ele mesmo testificou de mim. Vós nunca ouvistes a sua voz, nem vistes o seu parecer. E a sua palavra não permanece em vós, porque naquele que ele enviou não credes vós. Examinais as Escrituras, porque vós cuidais ter nelas a vida eterna, e são elas que de mim testificam; E não quereis vir a mim para terdes vida. Eu não recebo glória dos homens; Mas bem vos conheço, que não tendes em vós o amor de Deus. Eu vim em nome de meu Pai, e não me aceitais; se outro vier em seu próprio nome, a esse aceitareis. Como podeis vós crer, recebendo honra uns dos outros, e não buscando a honra que vem só de Deus? Não cuideis que eu vos hei de acusar para com o Pai. Há um que vos acusa, Moisés, em quem vós esperais. Porque, se vós crêsseis em Moisés, creríeis em mim; porque de mim escreveu ele. Mas, se não credes nos seus escritos, como crereis nas minhas palavras?

Great travail is created for every man, And a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, From the day of their coming forth from their mother’s womb, Until the day for their burial in the mother of all things. The expectation of things to come, and the day of death, Trouble their thoughts, and cause fear of heart; From him that sits on a throne of glory, Even to him that is humbled in earth and ashes; From him that wears purple and a crown, Even to him that is clothed with a hempen frock. There is wrath, and jealousy, and trouble, and disquiet, And fear of death, and anger, and strife; And in the time of rest upon his bed His night sleep does change his knowledge. A little or nothing is his resting, And afterward in his sleep, as in a day of keeping watch, He is troubled in the vision of his heart, As one that has escaped from the front of battle. In the very time of his deliverance he awakens, And marvels that the fear is nothing. It is thus with all flesh, from man to beast, And upon sinners sevenfold more. Death, and bloodshed, and strife, and sword, Calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge; All these things were created for the wicked, And because of them came the flood. All things that are of the earth turn to the earth again: And all things that are of the waters return into the sea. All bribery and injustice shall be blotted out; And good faith shall stand forever. The goods of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, And like a great thunder in rain shall go off in noise. In opening his hands a man shall be made glad: So shall transgressors utterly fail. The children of the ungodly shall not put forth many branches; And are as unclean roots upon a sheer rock. The sedge that grows upon every water and bank of a river Shall be plucked up before all grass. Bounty is as a garden of blessings, And almsgiving endures forever. The life of one that labores, and is contented, shall be made sweet; And he that finds a treasure is above both. Children and the building of a city establish a man’s name; And a blameless wife is counted above both. Wine and music rejoice the heart; And the love of wisdom is above both. The pipe and the lute make pleasant melody; And a pleasant tongue is above both. Your eye shall desire grace and beauty; And above both the green blade of corn. A friend and a companion never meet amiss; And a wife with her husband is above both. Brethren and succour are for a time of affliction; And almsgiving is a deliverer above both. Gold and silver will make the foot stand sure; And counsel is esteemed above them both. Riches and strength will lift up the heart; And the fear of the Lord is above both: There is nothing lacking in the fear of the Lord, And there is no need to seek help therein. The fear of the Lord is as a garden of blessing, And covers a man above all glory. My son, lead not a beggar’s life; Better it is to die than to beg. A man that looks to the table of another, His life is not to be counted for a life; He will pollute his soul with another man’s meats: But a man wise and well-instructed will beware thereof. In the mouth of the shameless begging will be sweet; And in his belly a fire shall be kindled.

1 Timóteo 1

Paulo, apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, segundo o mandado de Deus, nosso Salvador, e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, esperança nossa, A Timóteo meu verdadeiro filho na fé: Graça, misericórdia e paz da parte de Deus nosso Pai, e da de Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor. Como te roguei, quando parti para a macedônia, que ficasses em Éfeso, para advertires a alguns, que não ensinem outra doutrina, Nem se dêem a fábulas ou a genealogias intermináveis, que mais produzem questões do que edificação de Deus, que consiste na fé; assim o faço agora. Ora, o fim do mandamento é o amor de um coração puro, e de uma boa consciência, e de uma fé não fingida. Do que, desviando-se alguns, se entregaram a vãs contendas; Querendo ser mestres da lei, e não entendendo nem o que dizem nem o que afirmam. Sabemos, porém, que a lei é boa, se alguém dela usa legitimamente; Sabendo isto, que a lei não é feita para o justo, mas para os injustos e obstinados, para os ímpios e pecadores, para os profanos e irreligiosos, para os parricidas e matricidas, para os homicidas, Para os devassos, para os sodomitas, para os roubadores de homens, para os mentirosos, para os perjuros, e para o que for contrário à sã doutrina, Conforme o evangelho da glória de Deus bem-aventurado, que me foi confiado. E dou graças ao que me tem confortado, a Cristo Jesus Senhor nosso, porque me teve por fiel, pondo-me no ministério; A mim, que dantes fui blasfemo, e perseguidor, e injurioso; mas alcancei misericórdia, porque o fiz ignorantemente, na incredulidade. E a graça de nosso Senhor superabundou com a fé e amor que há em Jesus Cristo. Esta é uma palavra fiel, e digna de toda a aceitação, que Cristo Jesus veio ao mundo, para salvar os pecadores, dos quais eu sou o principal. Mas por isso alcancei misericórdia, para que em mim, que sou o principal, Jesus Cristo mostrasse toda a sua longanimidade, para exemplo dos que haviam de crer nele para a vida eterna. Ora, ao Rei dos séculos, imortal, invisível, ao único Deus sábio, seja honra e glória para todo o sempre. Amém. Este mandamento te dou, meu filho Timóteo, que, segundo as profecias que houve acerca de ti, milites por elas boa milícia; Conservando a fé, e a boa consciência, a qual alguns, rejeitando, fizeram naufrágio na fé. E entre esses foram Himeneu e Alexandre, os quais entreguei a Satanás, para que aprendam a não blasfemar.
