Bible Verses About Loneliness
The Bible meets loneliness with one steady promise: you are never truly alone, because God himself stays near. From David's honest cries in the Psalms to Jesus' parting words to his disciples, Scripture answers isolation with presence — a God who draws close to the brokenhearted, sets the lonely in families, and vows never to leave or forsake his people.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
Moses hands God's people the promise that his presence goes with them and will never abandon them.
Psalms 25:16
Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.
David names loneliness outright, showing that bringing it honestly to God is itself a prayer.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
God answers fear and isolation with the assurance that he is personally present to strengthen and uphold.
Psalms 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Even in the darkest valley, the Shepherd's nearness turns a solitary walk into a companioned one.
Matthew 28:20
teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Jesus' final words to his followers are a promise of unbroken companionship until the very end of the age.
Psalms 68:6
God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
God's heart for the isolated is to place them in belonging and family rather than leave them on the outside.
Psalms 27:10
When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up.
Even when the closest human bonds fail, God's welcome remains for those whom others have abandoned.
Joshua 1:9
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
God commissions Joshua for a daunting road with the guarantee that his presence travels every step of it.
Hebrews 13:5
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”
The New Testament repeats God's oldest promise: he will never leave or forsake those who belong to him.
John 14:18
I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
On the night before the cross, Jesus assures his friends they will not be left behind as orphans.
Psalms 139:7-10
Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.
There is no place so remote or so dark that God's hand is not already there to hold you.
Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul's sweeping list insists that nothing in all creation can cut a believer off from God's love.

Frequently asked questions
- What does the Bible say about loneliness?
- The Bible treats loneliness as real and worth naming (Psalms 25:16) and answers it with God's promised presence: he stays close to the brokenhearted (Psalms 34:18), sets the lonely in families (Psalms 68:6), and vows never to leave or forsake his people (Deuteronomy 31:6).
- Did Jesus ever feel lonely?
- Yes. In Gethsemane his closest friends fell asleep while he agonized (Matthew 26:38-40), and on the cross he cried out asking why God had forsaken him (Matthew 27:46). Jesus understands isolation from the inside.
- What is a good Bible verse for someone who feels alone?
- Deuteronomy 31:6 and Psalms 25:16 are common starting points — one is God's promise never to leave, the other a prayer that puts loneliness into words. Psalms 139:7-10 adds the assurance that God is present wherever you are.
- How can I pray when I feel lonely?
- Follow the psalmists: tell God plainly that you feel alone (Psalms 25:16), ask him to draw near (Psalms 27:9-10), and hold on to a specific promise of his presence such as Matthew 28:20. Short, honest prayers count.
- Does God want to end my loneliness through other people?
- Often, yes. Psalms 68:6 says God sets the lonely in families, and the New Testament calls believers to meet together and encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24-25), so reaching out to a church or trusted friends is a biblical response to loneliness.
