12 Bible Verses About Salvation

The Bible teaches that salvation is God's free gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ rather than earned by good works. Out of love, God sent his Son so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. The passages below show why we need saving, what God has done for us, and how anyone can respond and be saved today.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

The gospel in a single sentence: God's love moved him to give his Son so that believers would not perish but live forever.

Romans 10:9-10

that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.

Paul spells out the simplest path to salvation — confessing Jesus as Lord and believing God raised him from the dead.

Ephesians 2:8-9

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Salvation is pure grace received through faith, a gift no one can earn or boast about.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It sets the wages our sin has earned against the free gift God offers instead — eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Acts 4:12

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”

Peter declares that salvation is found in Jesus alone, the only name given to rescue humanity.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

Jesus identifies himself as the one way to the Father, making salvation a person to trust rather than a program to complete.

Romans 5:8

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God proved his love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners, not after we cleaned ourselves up.

Acts 16:30-31

brought them out, and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

When a desperate jailer asks what he must do to be saved, the answer is beautifully simple: believe in the Lord Jesus.

Titus 3:5

not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

It rules out our own righteous deeds as the basis of salvation and credits everything to God's mercy.

Romans 10:13

For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The invitation could not be wider — everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Salvation is not merely forgiveness but a whole new creation, with the old life gone and a new one begun.

1 Timothy 1:15

The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

Paul compresses the gospel into one trustworthy saying: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Bible say a person is saved?
By grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9 says that if you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, and Ephesians 2:8-9 makes clear this is God's gift, not a reward for effort.
Can salvation be earned by good works?
No. Titus 3:5 and Ephesians 2:8-9 both teach that God saves us according to his mercy, not because of righteous things we have done. Good works are the fruit of salvation, not its price.
What is the most famous Bible verse about salvation?
John 3:16 is the best-known verse in the Bible — it summarizes salvation as God giving his Son out of love so that whoever believes in him has eternal life.
Is salvation available to everyone?
Yes. Romans 10:13 promises that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, and 2 Peter 3:9 says God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish.
What happens after someone is saved?
The Bible describes a genuinely new life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says anyone in Christ is a new creation, and Romans 8:1 adds that there is now no condemnation for those who belong to him.
