Bible Verses About Temptation

The Bible speaks honestly about temptation: everyone faces it, God never sends it, and no one has to face it alone. Scripture promises that God is faithful to provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13), and that Jesus — tempted in every way yet without sin — understands and helps those who struggle. These verses offer strength to resist and comfort when the battle feels long.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Perhaps the most quoted promise on the subject: God limits every temptation and always provides an exit.

James 1:13-14

Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.

James traces temptation to its real source — our own desires — and clears God of ever being the tempter.

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

In Gethsemane, Jesus gives his disciples the twin disciplines that guard a willing spirit against weak flesh.

Hebrews 4:15-16

For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.

Jesus faced every kind of temptation without sinning, so he meets the tempted with sympathy and grace rather than judgment.

James 4:7

Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

A simple two-part strategy: draw near to God in submission, and the devil's power to entice collapses.

Matthew 6:13

Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’

Jesus builds the fight against temptation into daily prayer, teaching us to ask for deliverance before the battle begins.

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.

Peter urges clear-eyed alertness, picturing the enemy as a predator who is turned back by firm, faith-filled resistance.

Psalms 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Scripture stored in the heart works as a built-in defense at the very moment temptation strikes.

Galatians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Paul's positive strategy: a life kept in step with the Spirit leaves no room for the desires of the flesh to rule.

Hebrews 2:18

For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Because Jesus personally suffered temptation, his help comes from someone who truly knows the struggle.

James 1:12

Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.

Endurance under temptation is never wasted — God promises a crown to those who keep loving him through the trial.

Ephesians 6:10-11

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Temptation is spiritual warfare, and God supplies his own armor so we can stand firm rather than fall.

Frequently asked questions

Does God tempt us?
No. James 1:13 says plainly that God cannot be tempted by evil and tempts no one. God may test our faith to strengthen it, but temptation toward sin arises from our own desires (James 1:14) — never from God.
Is being tempted a sin?
No. Jesus himself was tempted in every way yet remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15), so temptation itself is not sin. Sin happens when desire is entertained and acted on (James 1:14-15) — feeling the pull is not the same as giving in.
How can I resist temptation?
Scripture gives a practical pattern: stay watchful and prayerful (Matthew 26:41), submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7), store God's word in your heart (Psalms 119:11), and walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). And 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises God always provides a way out.
Was Jesus really tempted?
Yes. Matthew 4:1-11 records the devil tempting Jesus in the wilderness, where Jesus answered each temptation with Scripture. Because he suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted (Hebrews 2:18).
What does 'lead us not into temptation' mean?
In the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:13), Jesus teaches us to ask God for protection ahead of time — to be kept from trials that would overwhelm us and delivered from the evil one. It is a daily admission that we need God's help before temptation ever arrives.
