But when the evening had come, his servants hurried to depart. Bagoas shut the tent outside, and dismissed those who waited from the presence of his lord. They went away to their beds; for they were all weary, because the feast had been long. But Judith was left alone in the tent, with Holofernes lying along upon his bed; for he was drunk with wine. Judith had said to her servant that she should stand outside her bedchamber, and wait for her to come out, as she did daily; for she said she would go out to her prayer. She spoke to Bagoas according to the same words. All went away from her presence, and none was left in the bedchamber, small or great. Judith, standing by his bed, said in her heart, O Lord God of all power, look in this hour upon the works of my hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem. For now is the time to help your inheritance, and to do the thing that I have purposed to the destruction of the enemies which have risen up against us. She came to the rail of the bed, which was at Holofernes’ head, and took down his scimitar from there. She drew near to the bed, took hold of the hair of his head, and said, “Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, this day.” She struck twice upon his neck with all her might, and took away his head from him, tumbled his body down from the bed, and took down the canopy from the pillars. After a little while she went out, and gave Holofernes’ head to her maid; and she put it in her bag of food. They both went out together to prayer, according to their custom. They passed through the camp, circled around that valley, and went up to the mountain of Bethulia, and came to its gates. Judith said afar off to the watchmen at the gates, “Open, open the gate, now. God is with us, even our God, to show his power yet in Israel, and his might against the enemy, as he has done even this day.” It came to pass, when the men of her city heard her voice, they made haste to go down to the gate of their city, and they called together the elders of the city. They all ran together, both small and great, for it was strange to them that she had come. They opened the gate and received them, making a fire to give light, and surrounded them. She said to them with a loud voice, “Praise God! Praise him! Praise God, who has not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel, but has destroyed our enemies by my hand tonight!” Then she took the head out of the bag and showed it, and said to them, “Behold, the head of Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Asshur, and behold, the canopy, in which he laid in his drunkenness. The Lord struck him by the hand of a woman. And as the Lord lives, who preserved me in my way that I went, my countenance deceived him to his destruction, and he did not commit sin with me, to defile and shame me.” All the people were exceedingly amazed, and bowed themselves, and worshipped God, and said with one accord, “Blessed are you, O our God, which have this day brought to nothing the enemies of your people.” Ozias said to her, “Blessed are you, daughter, in the sight of the Most High God, above all the women upon the earth; and blessed is the Lord God, who created the heavens and the earth, who directed you to cut off the head of the prince of our enemies. For your hope will not depart from the heart of men that remember the strength of God forever. May God turn these things to you for a perpetual praise, to visit you with good things, because you did not spare your life by reason of the affliction of our race, but avenged our fall, walking a straight way before our God.” And all the people said, “Amen! Amen!”

Marcos 14

Y era la pascua, y los días de los panes sin levadura dos días después; y procuraban los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los escribas como le prenderían por engaño, y le matarían. Mas decían: No en el día de la fiesta porque no se haga alboroto del pueblo. Y estando él en Betania en casa de Simón el leproso, y sentado a la mesa, vino una mujer teniendo un vaso de alabastro de ungüento de nardo puro de mucho precio, y quebrando el alabastro, se lo derramó sobre su cabeza. Y hubo algunos que se enojaron dentro de sí, y dijeron: ¿Para qué se ha hecho este desperdicio de ungüento? Porque podía esto ser vendido por más de trescientos denarios, y darse a los pobres. Y bramaban contra ella. Mas Jesús dijo: Dejádla: ¿por qué la molestais? buena obra me ha hecho. Porque siempre tenéis los pobres con vosotros, y cuando quisiereis, les podéis hacer bien; mas a mí no siempre me tenéis. Esta, lo que pudo, hizo: se ha anticipado a ungir mi cuerpo para la sepultura. De cierto os digo, que donde quiera que fuere predicado este evangelio en todo el mundo, también esto que ha hecho ésta, será dicho para memoria de ella. Entonces Júdas Iscariote, uno de los doce, fue a los príncipes de los sacerdotes, para entregársele. Y ellos oyéndolo se holgaron, y prometieron que le darían dineros. Y buscaba oportunidad como le entregaría. ¶ Y el primer día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, cuando sacrificaban la pascua, sus discípulos le dicen: ¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a prepararte, para que comas la pascua? Y envía dos de sus discípulos, y les dice: Id a la ciudad, y os encontrará un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua, seguídle; Y donde entrare, decíd al señor de la casa: El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está el aposento donde tengo de comer la pascua con mis discípulos? Y él os mostrará un gran cenadero aparejado, aderezad para nosotros allí. Y fueron sus discípulos, y vinieron a la ciudad, y hallaron como les había dicho, y aderezaron la pascua. Y llegada la tarde, vino con los doce. Y como se sentaron a la mesa, y comiesen, dice Jesús: De cierto os digo, que uno de vosotros, que come conmigo, me ha de entregar. Entonces ellos comenzaron a entristecerse, y a decirle cada uno por sí: ¿Seré yo? y el otro: ¿Seré yo? Y él respondiendo, les dijo: Es uno de los doce, que moja conmigo en el plato. A la verdad el Hijo del hombre va, como está de él escrito; mas ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! Bueno le fuera, si no hubiera nacido el tal hombre. Y estando ellos comiendo, tomó Jesús pan, y bendiciendo lo rompió, y les dio, y dijo: Tomád, coméd, éste es mi cuerpo. Y tomando la copa, habiendo dado gracias, les dio; y bebieron de ella todos. Y les dice: Esta es mi sangre del nuevo testamento, que por muchos es derramada. De cierto os digo, que no beberé más del fruto de la vid hasta aquel día, cuando lo beberé nuevo en el reino de Dios. ¶ Y como hubieron cantado un himno, se salieron al monte de las Olivas. Jesús entonces les dice: Todos seréis escandalizados en mí esta noche, porque escrito está: Heriré al pastor, y serán dispersas las ovejas. Mas después que haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea. Entonces Pedro le dijo: Aunque todos sean escandalizados, mas no yo. Y le dice Jesús: De cierto te digo, que tú, hoy, en esta misma noche, antes que el gallo haya cantado dos veces, me negarás tres veces. Mas él con más vehemencia decía: Si me fuere menester morir contigo, no te negaré. También todos decían lo mismo. Y vienen al lugar que se llama Getsemaní, y dice a sus discípulos: Sentáos aquí, entre tanto que oro. Y toma consigo a Pedro, y a Santiago, y a Juan, y comenzó a atemorizarse, y a angustiarse en gran manera. Y les dice: Del todo está triste mi alma hasta la muerte: esperád aquí, y velád. Y yéndose un poco adelante, se postró en tierra, y oró, que si fuese posible, pasase de él aquella hora; Y dijo: Abba, Padre, todas las cosas son a ti posibles; aparta de mi esta copa; empero no lo que yo quiero, sino lo que tú. Y vino, y los halló durmiendo; y dice a Pedro: ¿Simón, duermes? ¿No has podido velar una hora? Velád, y orád, para que no entréis en tentación: el espíritu a la verdad está presto, mas la carne enferma. Y volviéndose a ir, oró, y dijo las mismas palabras. Y vuelto, los halló otra vez durmiendo; porque los ojos de ellos estaban cargados, y no sabían que responderle. Y vino la tercera vez, y les dice: Dormíd ya, y descansád. Basta: la hora es venida: he aquí, el Hijo del hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores. Levantáos, vamos: he aquí, el que me entrega está cerca. Y luego, aun hablando él, vino Júdas, que era uno de los doce, y con él mucha gente con espadas y palos, de parte de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y de los ancianos. Y el que le entregaba les había dado una señal, diciendo: Al que yo besare, aquel es: prendédle, y llevádle seguramente. Y como vino, se llegó luego a él, y le dice: Maestro, Maestro, y le besó. Entonces ellos echaron en él sus manos, y le prendieron. Y uno de los que estaban allí, sacando la espada, hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, y le cortó la oreja. Y respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: ¿Cómo a ladrón, habéis salido con espadas y con palos a tomarme? Cada día estaba con vosotros enseñando en el templo, y no me tomasteis. Mas es así para que se cumplan las Escrituras. Entonces dejándole todos sus discípulos huyeron. Empero un mancebo le seguía cubierto de una sábana sobre el cuerpo desnudo; y los mancebos le prendieron. Mas él, dejando la sábana, se huyó de ellos desnudo. ¶ Y trajeron a Jesús al sumo sacerdote; y se juntaron a él todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los ancianos, y los escribas. Pedro empero le siguió de lejos hasta dentro del palacio del sumo sacerdote; y estaba sentado con los criados, y calentándose al fuego. Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y todo el concilio, buscaban testimonio contra Jesús, para entregarle a la muerte; mas no hallaban. Porque muchos decían falso testimonio contra él; mas sus testimonios no concertaban. Entonces levantándose unos, dieron falso testimonio contra él, diciendo: Nosotros le hemos oído decir: Yo derribaré este templo, que es hecho de manos, y en tres días edificaré otro hecho sin manos. Mas ni aun así se concertaba el testimonio de ellos. El sumo sacerdote entonces, levantándose en medio, preguntó a Jesús, diciendo: ¿No respondes algo? ¿Qué atestiguan estos contra ti? Mas él callaba, y nada respondió. El sumo sacerdote le volvió a preguntar, y le dice: ¿Eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito? Y Jesús le dijo: Yo soy; y veréis al Hijo del hombre asentado a la diestra del poder de Dios, y que viene en las nubes del cielo. Entonces el sumo sacerdote, rompiendo sus vestidos, dijo: ¿Qué más tenemos necesidad de testigos? Oído habéis la blasfemia: ¿Qué os parece? Y ellos todos le condenaron ser culpado de muerte. Y algunos comenzaron a escupir en él, y a cubrir su rostro, y a darle bofetadas, y decirle: Profetiza. Y los criados le herían de bofetadas. ¶ Y estando Pedro en el palacio abajo, vino una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote; Y como vio a Pedro que se calentaba, mirándole, dice: Y tú con Jesús el Nazareno estabas. Mas él negó, diciendo: No le conozco, ni sé lo que te dices. Y se salió fuera a la entrada, y cantó el gallo. Y la criada viéndole otra vez, comenzó a decir a los que estaban allí: Este es uno de ellos. Mas él negó otra vez. Y poco después otra vez los que estaban allí, dijeron a Pedro: Verdaderamente tú eres de ellos; porque eres Galileo, y tu habla es semejante. Y él comenzó a echarse maldiciones y a jurar, diciendo: No conozco a ese hombre de que habláis. Y el gallo cantó la segunda vez; y Pedro se acordó de las palabras que Jesús le había dicho: Antes que el gallo cante dos veces, me negarás tres veces; y comenzó a llorar.

Judith said to them, “Hear me now, my kindred, and take this head, and hang it upon the battlement of your wall. It will be, so soon as the morning appears, and the sun comes up on the earth, you shall each take up his weapons of war, and every valiant man of you go out of the city. You shall set a captain over them, as though you would go down to the plain toward the watch of the children of Asshur; but you men shall not go down. These shall take up their full armor, and shall go into their camp and rouse up the captains of the army of Asshur. They will run together to Holofernes’ tent. They won’t find him. Fear will fall upon them, and they will flee before your face. You men, and all that inhabit every coast of Israel, shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go. But before you do these things, summon Achior the Ammonite to me, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us, as it were to death. And they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; but when he came, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man’s hand in the assembly of the people, he fell upon his face, and his spirit failed. But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith’s feet, and bowed down to her, and said, “Blessed are you in every tent of Judah, and in every nation, which hearing your name will be troubled. Now tell me all the things that you have done in these days.” And Judith declared to him in the midst of the people all the things that she had done, from the day that she went out until the time that she spoke to them. But when she finished speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city. But when Achior saw all the things that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God exceedingly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the house of Israel, to this day. But as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took up his weapons, and they went forth by bands to the ascents of the mountain. But when the children of Asshur saw them, they sent word to their leaders; but they went to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers. They came to Holofernes’ tent, and said to him that was over all that he had, “Wake our lord up, now; for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.” Bagoas went in, and knocked at the outer door of the tent; for he supposed that he was sleeping with Judith. But when no one listened to him, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the threshold dead, and his head had been taken from him. He cried with a loud voice, with weeping and groaning and a mighty cry, and tore his garments. He entered into the tent where Judith lodged, and he didn’t find her. He leaped out to the people, and cried aloud, “The slaves have dealt treacherously! One woman of the Hebrews has brought shame upon the house of king Nebuchadnezzar; for, behold, Holofernes lies upon the ground, and his head is not on him!” But when the rulers of the army of Asshur heard the words, they tore their coats, and their soul was troubled exceedingly. There was a cry and an exceedingly great noise in the midst of the camp.

2 Corintios 10

Ruégoos, empero, yo Pablo, por la mansedumbre y dulzura de Cristo, (yo que en presencia soy despreciable entre vosotros, pero que estando ausente soy osado para con vosotros,) Ruégoos, pues, que cuando estuviere presente, no tenga que ser atrevido con la confianza con que pienso ser osado contra algunos, que nos tienen como si anduviésemos según la carne: Porque aunque andamos en la carne, no militamos según la carne: (Porque las armas de nuestra milicia no son carnales, sino poderosas de parte de Dios para destrucción de fortalezas;) Derribando conceptos, y toda cosa alta que se levanta contra la ciencia de Dios; y cautivando todo entendimiento a la obediencia de Cristo, Y estando prestos para castigar a toda desobediencia, desde que vuestra obediencia fuere cumplida. ¿Miráis las cosas según la apariencia exterior? Si alguno está confiado en sí mismo que es de Cristo, esto también piense por sí mismo, que como él es de Cristo, así también nosotros somos de Cristo. Porque aunque yo me jacte algún tanto más de nuestra potestad, (la cual el Señor nos dio para edificación, y no para vuestra destrucción,) no me avergonzaré. A fin de que no parezca como que os quiero espantar por cartas. Porque a la verdad, dice él, las cartas suyas son graves y fuertes; mas su presencia corporal endeble, y la palabra de menospreciar. Esto piense el tal, que cuales somos en la palabra por cartas estando ausentes, tales seremos también de obra estando presentes. Porque no osamos ni a contarnos, ni a compararnos con algunos que se alaban a sí mismos; mas ellos midiéndose a sí mismos por sí mismos, y comparándose a sí mismos consigo mismos, no entienden. Nosotros empero no nos jactaremos de cosas fuera de nuestra medida; sino conforme a la medida de la regla que Dios nos repartió, medida que llega también hasta vosotros, Porque no nos extendemos más allá de nuestra medida, como si no llegásemos hasta vosotros; porque también hasta vosotros hemos llegado en el evangelio de Cristo: No jactándonos de cosas fuera de nuestra medida, es a saber, de trabajos ajenos; mas teniendo esperanza de que en creciendo vuestra fe, seremos bastantemente engrandecidos entre vosotros conforme a nuestra regla; Para predicar el evangelio en las partes que están más allá de vosotros, no entrando en la medida de otro, para gloriarnos de lo que ya estaba aparejado. Mas el que se gloría, gloríese en el Señor. Porque no el que se alaba a sí mismo, el tal luego es aprobado; mas aquel a quien Dios alaba.
