If you do good, know to whom you do it; And your good deeds will have thanks. Do good to a godly man, and you will find a recompense; And if not from him, yet from the Most High. There will no good come to him that continueth to do evil, Nor to him that gives no alms. Give to the godly man, And help not the sinner. Do good to one that is lowly, And give not to an ungodly man: Keep back his bread, and give it not to him, Lest he overmaster you thereby: For you will receive twice as much evil For all the good you will have done to him. For the Most High also hates sinners, And will repay vengeance to the ungodly. Give to the good man, And help not the sinner. A man’s friend will not be fully tried in prosperity; And his enemy will not be hidden in adversity. In a man’s prosperity his enemies are grieved; And in his adversity even his friend will be separated from him. Never trust your enemy: For like as the brass rusts, so is his wickedness. Though he humble himself, and go crouching, Yet take good heed, and beware of him, And you will be to him as one that has wiped a mirror, And you will know that he has not utterly rusted it. Set him not by you, Lest he overthrow you and stand in your place; Let him not sit on your right hand, Lest he seek to take your seat, And at the last you acknowledge my words, And be pricked with my sayings. Who will pity a charmer that is bitten with a serpent, Or any that come near wild beasts? Even so who will pity him that goes to a sinner, And is mingled with him in his sins? For a while he will abide with you, And if you give way, he will not hold out. And the enemy will speak sweetly with his lips, And in his heart take counsel how to overthrow you into a pit: The enemy will weep with his eyes, And if he find opportunity, he will not be satiated with blood. If adversity meet you, you will find him there before you; And as though he would help you, he will trip up your heel. He will shake his head, and clap his hands, And whisper much, and change his countenance.

Lucas 16

Y decía también a sus discípulos: Había un hombre rico, el cual tenía un mayordomo; y éste fue acusado delante de él, como disipador de sus bienes. Y le llamó, y le dijo: ¿Qué es esto que oigo de ti? da cuenta de tu mayordomía; porque ya no podrás más ser mayordomo. Entonces el mayordomo dijo dentro de sí: ¿Qué haré? que mi señor me quita la mayordomía. Cavar, no puedo: mendigar, tengo vergüenza. Yo sé lo que haré, para que cuando fuere quitado de la mayordomía, me reciban en sus casas. Y llamando a cada uno de los deudores de su señor, dijo al primero: ¿Cuánto debes a mi señor? Y él dijo: Cien batos de aceite. Y le dijo: Toma tu obligación, y siéntate presto, y escribe cincuenta. Después dijo a otro: ¿Y tú, cuánto debes? Y él dijo: Cien coros de trigo. Y él le dijo: Toma tu obligación, y escribe ochenta. Y alabó el señor al mayordomo malo, por haber hecho prudentemente; porque los hijos de este siglo más prudentes son en su generación que los hijos de luz. Y yo os digo: Hacéos amigos de las riquezas de maldad, para que cuando faltareis, os reciban en las moradas eternas. El que es fiel en lo muy poco, también en lo más es fiel; y el que en lo muy poco es injusto, también en lo más es injusto. Pues si en las malas riquezas no fuisteis fieles, ¿lo que es verdadero, quién os lo confiará? Y si en lo ajeno no fuisteis fieles, ¿lo que es vuestro, quién os lo dará? Ningún siervo puede servir a dos señores; porque, o aborrecerá al uno, y amará al otro, o se allegará al uno, y menospreciará al otro. No podéis servir a Dios, y a las riquezas. Y oían también los Fariseos todas estas cosas, los cuales eran avaros; y burlaban de él. Y les dijo: Vosotros sois los que os justificais a vosotros mismos delante de los hombres; mas Dios conoce vuestros corazones; porque lo que los hombres tienen en alto aprecio, delante de Dios es abominación. La ley y los profetas fueron hasta Juan: desde entonces el reino de Dios es anunciado, y todos hacen fuerza contra él. Empero más fácil cosa es pasar el cielo y la tierra, que caer una tilde de la ley. Cualquiera que despide a su mujer, y se casa con otra, adultera; y el que se casa con la despedida del marido, adultera. ¶ Y había un hombre rico, que se vestía de púrpura y de lino fino, y hacía cada día banquete espléndidamente. Había también un mendigo llamado Lázaro, el cual estaba echado a la puerta de él, lleno de llagas, Y deseando hartarse de las migajas que caían de la mesa del rico; y aun los perros venían, y le lamían las llagas. Y aconteció, que murió el mendigo, y fue llevado por los ángeles al seno de Abraham; y murió también el rico, y fue sepultado. Y en el infierno, alzando sus ojos, estando en tormentos, vio a Abraham lejos, y a Lázaro en su seno. Entonces él, dando voces, dijo: Padre Abraham, ten misericordia de mí, y envía a Lázaro que moje la punta de su dedo en agua, y refresque mi lengua; porque soy atormentado en esta llama. Y le dijo Abraham: Hijo, acuérdate que recibiste tus bienes en tu vida, y Lázaro también males; mas ahora éste es consolado, y tú atormentado. Y además de todo esto, una grande sima está confirmada entre nosotros y vosotros, así que los que quisieren pasar de aquí a vosotros, no pueden, ni de allá pasar acá. Entonces dijo: Ruégote, pues, padre, que le envíes a la casa de mi padre; Porque tengo cinco hermanos, para que les proteste; porque no vengan ellos también a este lugar de tormento. Y Abraham le dice: A Moisés, y a los profetas tienen, oíganlos. Él entonces dijo: No, padre Abraham; mas si alguno fuere a ellos de los muertos se arrepentirán. Mas Abraham le dijo: Si no oyen a Moisés, y a los profetas, tampoco se persuadirán, aunque alguno se levantare de entre los muertos.

He that touches pitch will be defiled; And he that has fellowship with a proud man will become like to him. Take not up a burden above your strength; And have no fellowship with one that is mightier and richer than yourself. What fellowship shall the earthen pot have with the kettle? This will strike, and that will be dashed in pieces. The rich man does a wrong, and he threatens withal: The poor is wronged, and he will entreat withal. If you be profitable, he will make merchandise of you; And if you be in lack, he will forsake you. If you have substance, he will live with you; And he will make you bare, and will not be sorry. Hath he had need of you? then he will deceive you, And smile upon you, and give you hope: He will speak you fair, and say, What need you? And he will shame you by his meats, Until he have made you bare twice or thrice, And at the last he will laugh you to scorn: Afterward will he see you, and will forsake you, And shake his head at you. Beware that you be not deceived, and brought low in your mirth. If a mighty man invite you, be retiring, And so much the more will he invite you. Press not upon him, lest you be thrust back; And stand not far off, lest you be forgotten. Affect not to speak with him as an equal, And believe not his many words: For with much talk will he try you, And in a smiling manner will search you out. He that keeps not to himself words spoken is unmerciful; And he will not spare to hurt and to bind. Keep them to yourself, and take earnest heed, For you walk in peril of your falling. Every living creature loves his like, And every man loves his neighbor. All flesh consorts according to kind, And a man will cleave to his like. What fellowship shall the wolf have with the lamb? So is the sinner to the godly. What peace is there between the hyena and the dog? And what peace between the rich man and the poor? Wild asses are the prey of lions in the wilderness; So poor men are pasture for the rich. Lowliness is an abomination to a proud man; So a poor man is an abomination to the rich. A rich man when he is shaken is held up of his friends; But one of low degree being down is thrust away also by his friends. When a rich man is fallen, there are many helpers; He speaks things not to be spoken, and men justify him: A man of low degree falls, and men rebuke him withal; He utters wisdom, and no place is allowed him. A rich man speaks, and all keep silence; And what he says they extol to the clouds: A poor man speaks, and they say, Who is this? And if he stumble, they will help to overthrow him. Riches are good that have no sin; And poverty is evil in the mouth of the ungodly. The heart of a man changes his countenance, Whether it be for good or for evil. A cheerful countenance is a token of a heart that is in prosperity; And the finding out of parables is a weariness of thinking.

Filipenses 4

Por lo cual, hermanos míos, amados y deseados, mi gozo y mi corona, estád así firmes en el Señor, amados míos. A Euodias ruego, y ruego a Sintique, que tengan unos mismos sentimientos en el Señor. Asimismo te ruego también a ti, fiel compañero de yugo, ayuda a aquellas mujeres que combatieron juntamente conmigo por el evangelio, con Clemente también, y los demás mis ayudadores, cuyos nombres están en el libro de la vida: Regocijáos en el Señor siempre: otra vez digo, que os regocijéis. Vuestra modestia sea conocida de todos los hombres. El Señor está cerca. De nada estéis solícitos; sino que en todo dénse a conocer vuestras peticiones delante de Dios por la oración, y el ruego, con hacimiento de gracias. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepuja todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros entendimientos en Cristo Jesús. En fin, hermanos, que todo lo que es verdadero, todo lo honesto, todo lo justo, todo lo santo, todo lo amable, todo lo que es de buen nombre: si hay alguna virtud, y si hay alguna alabanza, pensád en las tales cosas. Lo que aprendisteis, y recibisteis, y oísteis, y visteis en mí, esto hacéd; y el Dios de paz será con vosotros. ¶ Empero en gran manera me regocijé en el Señor, de que al fin ya reverdecisteis en tener cuidado de mí, de lo cual en verdad estabais solícitos; mas os faltaba la oportunidad. No es que hablo en cuanto a necesidad; porque yo he aprendido a contentarme con lo que tuviere. Sé tan bien estar humillado, como sé tener abundancia; donde quiera y en todas cosas soy instruido así para estar harto como para sufrir hambre, lo mismo para tener abundancia como para padecer necesidad: Todo lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece. Todavía, hicisteis bien en que comunicasteis conmigo en mi tribulación. Ya sabéis también vosotros, oh Filipenses, que al principio del evangelio, cuando me partí de Macedonia, ninguna iglesia comunicó conmigo en materia de dar y de recibir, sino vosotros solos; Porque aun estando yo en Tesalónica, me enviasteis lo necesario una y dos veces. No que yo solicite dádivas, mas solicito fruto que abunde para vuestra cuenta. Empero todo lo tengo, y aun más de lo suficiente: estoy lleno, habiendo recibido de Epafrodito lo que enviasteis, olor de suavidad, sacrificio acepto y agradable a Dios. Y mi Dios suplirá todo lo que os falta, conforme a sus riquezas, en gloria por Cristo Jesús. Al Dios, pues, y Padre nuestro sea gloria por siglos de siglos. Amén. Saludád a todos los santos en Cristo Jesús: os saludan los hermanos que están conmigo. Os saludan todos los santos; y mayormente los que son de casa de César.
