Desire not a multitude of unprofitable children, Neither delight in ungodly sons. If they multiply, delight not in them, Except the fear of the Lord be with them. Trust not you in their life, Neither rely on their condition: For one is better than a thousand; And to die childless than to have ungodly children. For from one that has understanding will a city be peopled; But a race of wicked men will be made desolate. Many such things I have seen with my eyes; And my ear has heard mightier things than these. In the congregation of sinners will a fire be kindled; And in a disobedient nation wrath is kindled. He was not pacified toward the giants of old time, Who revolted in their strength. He spared not those with whom Lot sojourned, Whom he abhorred for their pride. He pitied not the people of perdition, Who were taken away in their sins. And in like manner the six hundred thousand footmen, Who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts. Even if there be one stiff-necked person, It is marvel if he will be unpunished: For mercy and wrath are with him; He is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath. As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: He judges a man according to his works. The sinner will not escape with his plunder; And the perseverance of the godly will not be frustrated. He will make room for every work of mercy; Each man will find according to his works. Don’t say, I shall be hidden from the Lord; And who will remember me from on high? I will not be known among so many people; For what is my soul in a boundless creation? Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, The deep, and the earth, will be moved when he shall visit. The mountains and the foundations of the earth together Are shaken with trembling, when he looks upon them. And no heart will think upon these things: And who shall conceive his ways? And there is a tempest which no man will see; Yes, the more part of his works are hid. Who will declare the works of his righteousness? Or who will endure them? For his covenant is afar off. He that is lacking in understanding thinks upon these things; And an unwise and erring man thinks follies. My son, hearken to me, and learn knowledge, And give heed to my words with your heart. I will show forth instruction by weight, And declare knowledge exactly. In the judgement of the Lord are his works from the beginning; And from the making of them he disposed the parts thereof. He garnished his works forever, And the beginnings of them to their generations: They neither hunger, nor are weary, And they cease not from their works. No one thrusteth aside his neighbor; And they will never disobey his word. After this also the Lord looked upon the earth, And filled it with his blessings. All manner of living things covered the face thereof; And into it is their return.

Luca 18

Propose loro ancora questa parabola per mostrare che doveano del continuo pregare e non stancarsi. In una certa città v’era un giudice, che non temeva Iddio né avea rispetto per alcun uomo; e in quella città vi era una vedova, la quale andava da lui dicendo: Fammi giustizia del mio avversario. Ed egli per un tempo non volle farlo; ma poi disse fra sé: benché io non tema Iddio e non abbia rispetto per alcun uomo, pure, poiché questa vedova mi dà molestia, le farò giustizia, che talora, a forza di venire, non finisca col rompermi la testa. E il Signore disse: Ascoltate quel che dice il giudice iniquo. E Dio non farà egli giustizia ai suoi eletti che giorno e notte gridano a lui, e sarà egli tardo per loro? Io vi dico che farà loro prontamente giustizia. Ma quando il Figliuol dell’uomo verrà, troverà egli la fede sulla terra? E disse ancora questa parabola per certuni che confidavano in se stessi di esser giusti e disprezzavano gli altri: Due uomini salirono al tempio per pregare; l’uno Fariseo, e l’altro pubblicano. Il Fariseo, stando in piè, pregava così dentro di sé: O Dio, ti ringrazio ch’io non sono come gli altri uomini, rapaci, ingiusti, adulteri; né pure come quel pubblicano. Io digiuno due volte la settimana; pago la decima su tutto quel che posseggo. Ma il pubblicano, stando da lungi, non ardiva neppure alzar gli occhi al cielo; ma si batteva il petto, dicendo: O Dio, sii placato verso me peccatore! Io vi dico che questi scese a casa sua giustificato, piuttosto che quell’altro; perché chiunque s’innalza sarà abbassato; ma chi si abbassa sarà innalzato. Or gli recavano anche i bambini, perché li toccasse; ma i discepoli, veduto questo, sgridavano quelli che glieli recavano. Ma Gesù chiamò a sé i bambini, e disse: Lasciate i piccoli fanciulli venire a me, e non glielo vietate, perché di tali è il regno di Dio. In verità io vi dico che chiunque non avrà ricevuto il regno di Dio come un piccolo fanciullo, non entrerà punto in esso. E uno dei principali lo interrogò, dicendo: Maestro buono, che farò io per ereditare la vita eterna? E Gesù gli disse: Perché mi chiami buono? Nessuno è buono, salvo uno solo, cioè Iddio. Tu sai i comandamenti: Non commettere adulterio; non uccidere; non rubare; non dir falsa testimonianza; onora tuo padre e tua madre. Ed egli rispose: Tutte queste cose io le ho osservate fin dalla mia giovinezza. E Gesù, udito questo, gli disse: Una cosa ti manca ancora; vendi tutto ciò che hai, e distribuiscilo ai poveri, e tu avrai un tesoro nel cielo; poi vieni e seguitami. Ma egli, udite queste cose, ne fu grandemente attristato, perché era molto ricco. E Gesù, vedendolo a quel modo, disse: Quanto malagevolmente coloro che hanno delle ricchezze entreranno nel regno di Dio! Poiché è più facile a un cammello passare per la cruna d’un ago, che ad un ricco entrare nel regno di Dio. E quelli che udiron questo dissero: Chi dunque può esser salvato? Ma egli rispose: Le cose impossibili agli uomini sono possibili a Dio. E Pietro disse: Ecco, noi abbiam lasciato le nostre case, e t’abbiam seguitato. Ed egli disse loro: Io vi dico in verità che non v’è alcuno che abbia lasciato casa, o moglie, o fratelli, o genitori, o figliuoli per amor del regno di Dio, il quale non ne riceva molte volte tanto in questo tempo, e nel secolo avvenire la vita eterna. Poi, presi seco i dodici, disse loro: Ecco, noi saliamo a Gerusalemme, e saranno adempiute rispetto al Figliuol dell’uomo tutte le cose scritte dai profeti; poiché egli sarà dato in man de’ Gentili, e sarà schernito ed oltraggiato e gli sputeranno addosso; e dopo averlo flagellato, l’uccideranno; ma il terzo giorno risusciterà. Ed essi non capirono nulla di queste cose; quel parlare era per loro oscuro, e non intendevano le cose dette loro. Or avvenne che com’egli si avvicinava a Gerico, un certo cieco sedeva presso la strada, mendicando; e, udendo la folla che passava, domandò che cosa fosse. E gli fecero sapere che passava Gesù il Nazareno. Allora egli gridò: Gesù figliuol di Davide, abbi pietà di me! E quelli che precedevano lo sgridavano perché tacesse; ma lui gridava più forte: Figliuol di Davide, abbi pietà di me! E Gesù, fermatosi, comandò che gli fosse menato; e quando gli fu vicino, gli domandò: Che vuoi tu ch’io ti faccia? Ed egli disse: Signore, ch’io ricuperi la vista. E Gesù gli disse: Ricupera la vista; la tua fede t’ha salvato. E in quell’istante ricuperò la vista, e lo seguiva glorificando Iddio; e tutto il popolo, veduto ciò, diede lode a Dio.

The Lord created man of the earth, And turned him back to it again. He gave them days by number, and a set time, And gave them authority over the things that are thereon. He endued them with strength proper to them; And made them according to his own image. He put the fear of man upon all flesh, And gave him to have dominion over beasts and fowls. Counsel, and tongue, and eyes, Ears, and heart, gave he them to understand withal. He filled them with the knowledge of wisdom, And showed them good and evil. He set his eye upon their hearts, To show them the majesty of his works. And they will praise the name of his holiness, That they may declare the majesty of his works. He added to them knowledge, And gave them a law of life for a heritage. He made an everlasting covenant with them, And showed them his judgements. Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory; And their ear heard the glory of his voice. And he said to them, Beware of all unrighteousness; And he gave them commandment, each man concerning his neighbor. Their ways are ever before him; They will not be hid from his eyes. For every nation he appointed a ruler; And Israel is the Lord’s portion. All their works are as the sun before him; And his eyes are continually upon their ways. Their iniquities are not hid from him; And all their sins are before the Lord. With him the alms of a man is as a signet; And he will keep the bounty of a man as the apple of the eye. Afterwards he will rise up and recompense them, And render their recompense upon their head. Howbeit to those who repent he granteth a return; And he comforteth those who are losing patience. Return to the Lord, and forsake sins: Make your prayer before his face, and lessen the offence. Turn again to the Most High, and turn away from iniquity; And greatly hate the abominable thing. Who will give praise to the Most High in the grave, Instead of them which live and return thanks? Thanksgiving perishes from the dead, as from one that is not: He that is in life and health will praise the Lord. How great is the mercy of the Lord, And his forgiveness to those who turn to him! For all things can’t be in men, Because the son of man is not immortal. What is brighter than the sun? yet this fails: And an evil man will think on flesh and blood. He looks upon the power of the height of heaven: And all men are earth and ashes.

Colossesi 2

Poiché desidero che sappiate qual arduo combattimento io sostengo per voi e per quelli di Laodicea e per tutti quelli che non hanno veduto la mia faccia; affinché siano confortati nei loro cuori essendo stretti insieme dall’amore, mirando a tutte le ricchezze della piena certezza dell’intelligenza, per giungere alla completa conoscenza del mistero di Dio: cioè di Cristo, nel quale tutti i tesori della sapienza e della conoscenza sono nascosti. Questo io dico affinché nessuno v’inganni con parole seducenti, perché, sebbene sia assente di persona, pure son con voi in ispirito, rallegrandomi e mirando il vostro ordine e la fermezza della vostra fede in Cristo. Come dunque avete ricevuto Cristo Gesù il Signore, così camminate uniti a lui, essendo radicati ed edificati in lui e confermati nella fede, come v’è stato insegnato, e abbondando in azioni di grazie. Guardate che non vi sia alcuno che faccia di voi sua preda con la filosofia e con vanità ingannatrice secondo la tradizione degli uomini, gli elementi del mondo, e non secondo Cristo; poiché in lui abita corporalmente tutta la pienezza della Deità, e in lui voi avete tutto pienamente. Egli è il capo d’ogni principato e d’ogni potestà; in lui voi siete anche stati circoncisi d’una circoncisione non fatta da mano d’uomo, ma della circoncisione di Cristo, che consiste nello spogliamento del corpo della carne: essendo stati con lui sepolti nel battesimo, nel quale siete anche stati risuscitati con lui mediante la fede nella potenza di Dio che ha risuscitato lui dai morti. E voi, che eravate morti ne’ falli e nella incirconcisione della vostra carne, voi, dico, Egli ha vivificati con lui, avendoci perdonato tutti i falli, avendo cancellato l’atto accusatore scritto in precetti, il quale ci era contrario; e quell’atto ha tolto di mezzo, inchiodandolo sulla croce; e avendo spogliato i principati e le potestà ne ha fatto un pubblico spettacolo, trionfando su di loro per mezzo della croce. Nessuno dunque vi giudichi quanto al mangiare o al bere, o rispetto a feste, o a noviluni o a sabati, che sono l’ombra di cose che doveano avvenire; ma il corpo è di Cristo. Nessuno a suo talento vi defraudi del vostro premio per via d’umiltà e di culto degli angeli affidandosi alle proprie visioni, gonfiato di vanità dalla sua mente carnale, e non attenendosi al Capo, dal quale tutto il corpo, ben fornito e congiunto insieme per via delle giunture e articolazioni, prende l’accrescimento che viene da Dio. Se siete morti con Cristo agli elementi del mondo, perché, come se viveste nel mondo, vi lasciate imporre de’ precetti, quali: Non toccare, non assaggiare, non maneggiare (cose tutte destinate a perire con l’uso), secondo i comandamenti e le dottrine degli uomini? Quelle cose hanno, è vero, riputazione di sapienza per quel tanto che è in esse di culto volontario, di umiltà, e di austerità nel trattare il corpo; ma non hanno alcun valore e servon solo a soddisfare la carne.
