And instead of a friend become not an enemy; For an evil name will inherit shame and reproach: Even so will the sinner that has a double tongue. Exalt not yourself in the counsel of your soul; That your soul be not torn in pieces as a bull: You will eat up your leaves, and destroy your fruits, And leave yourself as a dry tree. A wicked soul will destroy him that has gotten it, And will make him a laughing stock to his enemies. Sweet words will multiply a man’s friends; And a fair-speaking tongue will multiply courtesies. Let those that are at peace with you be many; But your counselors one of a thousand. If you would get you a friend, get him by proving, And be not in haste to trust him. For there is a friend that is so for his own occasion; And he will not continue in the day of your affliction. And there is a friend that turns to enmity; And he will discover strife to your reproach. And there is a friend that is a companion at the table; And he will not continue in the day of your affliction. And in your prosperity he will be as yourself, And will be bold over your servants: If you shall be brought low, he will be against you, And will hide himself from your face. Separate yourself from your enemies; And beware of your friends. A faithful friend is a strong defence; And he that has found him has found a treasure. There is nothing that can be taken in exchange for a faithful friend; And his excellency is beyond price. A faithful friend is a medicine of life; And those who fear the Lord will find him. He that fears the Lord directs his friendship aright; For as he is, so is his neighbor also. My son, gather instruction from your youth up: And even to hoar hairs you will find wisdom. Come to her as one that plows and sows, And wait for her good fruits; For your toil will be little in the tillage of her, And you will eat of her fruits right soon. How exceeding harsh is she to the unlearned! And he that is without understanding will not abide in her. As a mighty stone of trial will she rest upon him; And he will not delay to cast her from him. For wisdom is according to her name; and she is not manifest to many. Give ear, my son, and accept my judgement, And refuse not my counsel, And bring your feet into her fetters, And your neck into her chain. Put your shoulder under her, and bear her, And be not grieved with her bonds. Come to her with all your soul, And keep her ways with your whole power. Search, and seek, and she will be made known to you; And when you have got hold of her, let her not go. For at the last you will find her rest; And she will be turned for you into gladness. And her fetters will be to you for a covering of strength, And her chains for a robe of glory. For there is a golden ornament upon her, And her bands are a riband of blue. You shall put her on as a robe of glory, And shall array you with her as a crown of rejoicing. My son, if you will, you shall be instructed; And if you will yield your soul, you will be prudent. If you love to hear, you will receive; And if you incline your ear, you will be wise. Stand you in the multitude of the elders; And whoso is wise, cleave you to him. Be willing to listen to every godly discourse; And don’t let the proverbs of understanding escape you. If you see a man of understanding, get you betimes to him, And let your foot wear out the steps of his doors. Let your mind dwell upon the ordinances of the Lord, And meditate continually in his commandments: He will establish your heart, And your desire of wisdom will be given to you.

Luca 12

Intanto, essendosi la moltitudine radunata a migliaia, così da calpestarsi gli uni gli altri, Gesù cominciò prima di tutto a dire ai suoi discepoli: Guardatevi dal lievito de’ Farisei, che è ipocrisia. Ma non v’è niente di coperto che non abbia ad essere scoperto, né di occulto che non abbia ad esser conosciuto. Perciò tutto quel che avete detto nelle tenebre, sarà udito nella luce; e quel che avete detto all’orecchio nelle stanze interne, sarà proclamato sui tetti. Ma a voi che siete miei amici, io dico: Non temete coloro che uccidono il corpo, e che dopo ciò, non possono far nulla di più; ma io vi mostrerò chi dovete temere: Temete colui che, dopo aver ucciso, ha potestà di gettar nella geenna. Sì, vi dico, temete Lui. Cinque passeri non si vendon per due soldi? Eppure non uno d’essi è dimenticato dinanzi a Dio; anzi, perfino i capelli del vostro capo son tutti contati. Non temete dunque; voi siete da più di molti passeri. Or io vi dico: Chiunque mi avrà riconosciuto davanti agli uomini, anche il Figliuol dell’uomo riconoscerà lui davanti agli angeli di Dio; ma chi mi avrà rinnegato davanti agli uomini, sarà rinnegato davanti agli angeli di Dio. Ed a chiunque avrà parlato contro il Figliuol dell’uomo, sarà perdonato; ma a chi avrà bestemmiato contro lo Spirito Santo, non sarà perdonato. Quando poi vi condurranno davanti alle sinagoghe e ai magistrati e alle autorità, non state in ansietà del come o del che avrete a rispondere a vostra difesa, o di quel che avrete a dire; perché lo Spirito Santo v’insegnerà in quell’ora stessa quel che dovrete dire. Or uno della folla gli disse: Maestro, di’ a mio fratello che divida con me l’eredità. Ma Gesù gli rispose: O uomo, chi mi ha costituito su voi giudice o spartitore? Poi disse loro: Badate e guardatevi da ogni avarizia; perché non è dall’abbondanza de’ beni che uno possiede, ch’egli ha la sua vita. E disse loro questa parabola: La campagna d’un certo uomo ricco fruttò copiosamente; ed egli ragionava così fra sé medesimo: Che farò, poiché non ho dove riporre i miei raccolti? E disse: Questo farò: demolirò i miei granai e ne fabbricherò dei più vasti, e vi raccoglierò tutto il mio grano e i miei beni, e dirò all’anima mia: Anima, tu hai molti beni riposti per molti anni; riposati, mangia, bevi, godi. Ma Dio gli disse: Stolto, questa notte stessa l’anima tua ti sarà ridomandata; e quel che hai preparato, di chi sarà? Così è di chi tesoreggia per sé, e non è ricco in vista di Dio. Poi disse ai suoi discepoli: Perciò vi dico: Non siate con ansietà solleciti per la vita vostra di quel che mangerete; né per il corpo di che vi vestirete; poiché la vita è più dei nutrimento, e il corpo è più del vestito. Considerate i corvi: non seminano, non mietono; non hanno dispensa né granaio, eppure Dio li nutrisce. Di quanto non siete voi da più degli uccelli? E chi di voi può con la sua sollecitudine aggiungere alla sua statura pure un cubito? Se dunque non potete far nemmeno ciò ch’è minimo, perché siete in ansiosa sollecitudine del rimanente? Considerate i gigli, come crescono; non faticano e non filano; eppure io vi dico che Salomone stesso, con tutta la sua gloria, non fu vestito come uno di loro. Or se Dio riveste così l’erba che oggi è nel campo e domani è gettata nel forno, quanto più vestirà voi, o gente di poca fede? Anche voi non cercate che mangerete e che berrete, e non ne state in sospeso; poiché tutte queste cose son le genti del mondo che le ricercano; ma il Padre vostro sa che ne avete bisogno. Cercate piuttosto il suo regno, e queste cose vi saranno sopraggiunte. Non temere, o piccol gregge; poiché al Padre vostro è piaciuto di darvi il regno. Vendete i vostri beni, e fatene elemosina; fatevi delle borse che non invecchiano, un tesoro che non venga meno ne’ cieli, ove ladro non s’accosta e tignuola non guasta. Perché dov’è il vostro tesoro, quivi sarà anche il vostro cuore. I vostri fianchi siano cinti, e le vostre lampade accese; e voi siate simili a quelli che aspettano il loro padrone quando tornerà dalle nozze, per aprirgli appena giungerà e picchierà. Beati que’ servitori che il padrone, arrivando, troverà vigilanti! In verità io vi dico che egli si cingerà, li farà mettere a tavola e passerà a servirli. E se giungerà alla seconda o alla terza vigilia e li troverà così, beati loro! Or sappiate questo, che se il padron di casa sapesse a che ora verrà il ladro, veglierebbe e non si lascerebbe sconficcar la casa. Anche voi siate pronti, perché nell’ora che non pensate, il Figliuol dell’uomo verrà. E Pietro disse: Signore, questa parabola la dici tu per noi, o anche per tutti? E il Signore rispose: E qual è mai l’economo fedele e avveduto che il padrone costituirà sui suoi domestici per dar loro a suo tempo la loro misura di viveri? Beato quel servitore che il padrone, al suo arrivo, troverà facendo così. In verità io vi dico che lo costituirà su tutti i suoi beni. Ma se quel servitore dice in cuor suo: Il mio padrone mette indugio a venire; e comincia a battere i servi e le serve, e a mangiare e bere ed ubriacarsi, il padrone di quel servitore verrà nel giorno che non se l’aspetta e nell’ora che non sa; e lo farà lacerare a colpi di flagello, e gli assegnerà la sorte degl’infedeli. Or quel servitore che ha conosciuto la volontà del suo padrone e non ha preparato né fatto nulla per compiere la volontà di lui, sarà battuto di molti colpi; ma colui che non l’ha conosciuta e ha fatto cose degne di castigo, sarà battuto di pochi colpi. E a chi molto è stato dato, molto sarà ridomandato; e a chi molto è stato affidato, tanto più si richiederà. Io son venuto a gettare un fuoco sulla terra; e che mi resta a desiderare, se già è acceso? Ma v’è un battesimo del quale ho da esser battezzato; e come sono angustiato finché non sia compiuto! Pensate voi ch’io sia venuto a metter pace in terra? No, vi dico; ma piuttosto divisione; perché, da ora innanzi, se vi sono cinque persone in una casa, saranno divise tre contro due, e due contro tre; saranno divisi il padre contro il figliuolo, e il figliuolo contro li padre; la madre contro la figliuola, e la figliuola contro la madre; la suocera contro la nuora, e la nuora contro la suocera. Diceva poi ancora alle turbe: Quando vedete una nuvola venir su da ponente, voi dite subito: Viene la pioggia; e così succede. E quando sentite soffiar lo scirocco, dite: Farà caldo, e avviene così. Ipocriti, ben sapete discernere l’aspetto della terra e del cielo; e come mai non sapete discernere questo tempo? E perché non giudicate da voi stessi ciò che è giusto? Quando vai col tuo avversario davanti al magistrato, fa’ di tutto, mentre sei per via, per liberarti da lui; che talora e’ non ti tragga dinanzi al giudice, e il giudice ti dia in man dell’esecutore giudiziario, e l’esecutore ti cacci in prigione. Io ti dico che non uscirai di là, finché tu non abbia pagato fino all’ultimo spicciolo.

Do no evil, so will no evil overtake you. Depart from wrong, and it will turn away from you. My son, sow not upon the furrows of unrighteousness, And you shall not reap them sevenfold. Seek not of the Lord preeminence, Neither of the king the seat of honor. Justify not yourself in the presence of the Lord; And display not your wisdom before the king. Seek not to be a judge, Lest you be not able to take away iniquities; Lest haply you fear the person of a mighty man, And lay a stumbling block in the way of your uprightness. Sin not against the multitude of the city, And cast not yourself down in the crowd. Bind not up sin twice; For in one sin you will not be unpunished. Say not, He will look upon the multitude of my gifts, And when I offer to the Most High God, he will accept it. Be not faint-hearted in your prayer; And neglect not to give alms. Laugh not a man to scorn when he is in the bitterness of his soul; For there is one who humbles and exalts. Devise not a lie against your brother; Neither do the like to a friend. Love not to make any manner of lie; For the custom thereof is not for good. Prate not in the multitude of elders; And repeat not your words in your prayer. Hate not laborious work; Neither husbandry, which the Most High has ordained. Number not yourself among the multitude of sinners: Remember that wrath will not wait. Humble your soul greatly; For the punishment of the ungodly man is fire and the worm. Change not a friend for a thing indifferent; Neither a true brother for the gold of Ophir. Forgo not a wise and good wife; For her grace is above gold. Entreat not evil a servant that works truly, Nor a hireling that gives you his life. Let your soul love a wise servant; Defraud him not of liberty. Hast you cattle? have an eye to them; And if they are profitable to you, let them stay by you. Hast you children? correct them, And bow down their neck from their youth. Hast you daughters? give heed to their body, And make not your face cheerful toward them. Give your daughter in marriage, and you will have accomplished a great matter: And give her to a man of understanding. Hast you a wife after your mind? cast her not out: But trust not yourself to one that is hateful. Give glory to your father with your whole heart; And forget not the pangs of your mother. Remember that of them you were born: And what will you recompense them for the things that they have done for you? Fear the Lord with all your soul; And reverence his priests. With all your strength love him that made you; And forsake not his ministers. Fear the Lord, and glorify the priest; And give him his portion, even as it is commanded you; The first fruits, and the trespass offering, and the gift of the shoulders, And the sacrifice of sanctification, and the first fruits of holy things. Also to the poor man stretch out your hand, That your blessing may be perfected. A gift has grace in the sight of every man living; And for a dead man keep not back grace. Be not lacking to those who weep; And mourn with those who mourn. Be not slow to visit a sick man; For by such things you will gain love. In all your matters remember your last end, And you will never do amiss.

Efesini 6

Figliuoli, ubbidite nel Signore ai vostri genitori, poiché ciò è giusto. Onora tuo padre e tua madre (è questo il primo comandamento con promessa) affinché ti sia bene e tu abbia lunga vita sulla terra. E voi, padri, non provocate ad ira i vostri figliuoli, ma allevateli in disciplina e in ammonizione del Signore. Servi, ubbidite ai vostri signori secondo la carne, con timore e tremore, nella semplicità del cuor vostro, come a Cristo, non servendo all’occhio come per piacere agli uomini, ma, come servi di Cristo, facendo il voler di Dio d’animo; servendo con benevolenza, come se serviste il Signore e non gli uomini; sapendo che ognuno, quand’abbia fatto qualche bene, ne riceverà la retribuzione dal Signore, servo o libero che sia. E voi, signori, fate altrettanto rispetto a loro; astenendovi dalle minacce, sapendo che il Signor vostro e loro è nel cielo, e che dinanzi a lui non v’è riguardo a qualità di persone. Del rimanente, fortificatevi nel Signore e nella forza della sua possanza. Rivestitevi della completa armatura di Dio, onde possiate star saldi contro le insidie del diavolo; poiché il combattimento nostro non è contro sangue e carne, ma contro i principati, contro le potestà, contro i dominatori di questo mondo di tenebre, contro le forze spirituali della malvagità, che sono ne’ luoghi celesti. Perciò, prendete la completa armatura di Dio, affinché possiate resistere nel giorno malvagio, e dopo aver compiuto tutto il dover vostro, restare in piè. State dunque saldi, avendo presa la verità a cintura dei fianchi, essendovi rivestiti della corazza della giustizia e calzati i piedi della prontezza che dà l’Evangelo della pace; prendendo oltre a tutto ciò lo scudo della fede, col quale potrete spegnere tutti i dardi infocati del maligno. Prendete anche l’elmo della salvezza e la spada dello Spirito, che è la Parola di Dio; orando in ogni tempo, per lo Spirito, con ogni sorta di preghiere e di supplicazioni; ed a questo vegliando con ogni perseveranza e supplicazione per tutti i santi, ed anche per me, acciocché mi sia dato di parlare apertamente per far conoscere con franchezza il mistero dell’Evangelo, per il quale io sono ambasciatore in catena; affinché io l’annunzi francamente, come convien ch’io ne parli. Or acciocché anche voi sappiate lo stato mio e quello ch’io fo, Tichico, il caro fratello e fedel ministro del Signore, vi farà saper tutto. Ve l’ho mandato apposta affinché abbiate conoscenza dello stato nostro ed ei consoli i vostri cuori. Pace a’ fratelli e amore con fede, da Dio Padre e dal Signor Gesù Cristo. La grazia sia con tutti quelli che amano il Signor nostro Gesù Cristo con purità incorrotta.
