But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment will touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died; And their departure was accounted to be their hurt, And their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace. For even if in the sight of men they be punished, Their hope is full of immortality; And having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good; Because God made trial of them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace he proved them, And as a whole burnt offering he accepted them. And in the time of their visitation they will shine forth, And as sparks among stubble they will run to and fro. They will judge nations, and have dominion over peoples; And the Lord will reign over them for evermore. They that trust on him will understand truth, And the faithful will abide with him in love; Because grace and mercy are to his chosen. But the ungodly will be requited even as they reasoned, They which lightly regarded the righteous man, and revolted from the Lord; (For he that sets at nothing wisdom and discipline is miserable;) And void is their hope and their toils unprofitable, And useless are their works: Their wives are foolish, and wicked are their children; Accursed is their begetting. Because happy is the barren that is undefiled, She who has not conceived in transgression; She will have fruit when God visiteth souls. And happy is the eunuch which has wrought no lawless deed with his hands, Nor imagined wicked things against the Lord; For there will be given him for his faithfulness a peculiar favor, And a lot in the sanctuary of the Lord more delightsome than wife or children. For good labors have fruit of great renown; And the root of understanding can’t fail. But children of adulterers will not come to maturity, And the seed of an unlawful bed will vanish away. For if they live long, they will be held in no account, And at the last their old age will be without honor. And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, Nor in the day of decision will they have consolation. For the end of an unrighteous generation is always grievous.

Preghiera del mattino — seconda lettura

Luca 1:1-39

Poiché molti hanno intrapreso ad ordinare una narrazione de’ fatti che si son compiuti tra noi, secondo che ce li hanno tramandati quelli che da principio ne furono testimoni oculari e che divennero ministri della Parola, è parso bene anche, a me dopo essermi accuratamente informato d’ogni cosa dall’origine, di scrivertene per ordine, o eccellentissimo Teofilo, affinché tu riconosca la certezza delle cose che ti sono state insegnate. Ai dì d’Erode, re della Giudea, v’era un certo sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della muta di Abia; e sua moglie era delle figliuole d’Aronne e si chiamava Elisabetta. Or erano ambedue giusti nel cospetto di Dio, camminando irreprensibili in tutti i comandamenti e precetti del Signore. E non aveano figliuoli, perché Elisabetta era sterile, ed erano ambedue avanzati in età. Or avvenne che esercitando Zaccaria il sacerdozio dinanzi a Dio nell’ordine della sua muta, secondo l’usanza del sacerdozio, gli toccò a sorte d’entrar Del tempio del Signore per offrirvi il profumo; e tutta la moltitudine del popolo stava di fuori in preghiera nell’ora del profumo. E gli apparve un angelo del Signore, ritto alla destra dell’altare de’ profumi. E Zaccaria, vedutolo, fu turbato e preso da spavento. Ma l’angelo gli disse: Non temere, Zaccaria, perché la tua preghiera è stata esaudita; e tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figliuolo, al quale porrai nome Giovanni. E tu ne avrai gioia ed allegrezza, e molti si rallegreranno per la sua nascita. Poiché sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore; non berrà né vino né cervogia, e sarà ripieno dello Spirito Santo fin dal seno di sua madre, e convertirà molti de’ figliuoli d’Israele al Signore Iddio loro; ed egli andrà innanzi a lui con lo spirito e con la potenza d’Elia, per volgere i cuori de’ padri ai figliuoli e i ribelli alla saviezza de’ giusti, affin di preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto. E Zaccaria disse all’angelo: A che conoscerò io questo? Perch’io son vecchio e mia moglie è avanti nell’età. E l’angelo, rispondendo, gli disse: Io son Gabriele, che sto davanti a Dio; e sono stato mandato a parlarti e recarti questa buona notizia. Ed ecco, tu sarai muto, e non potrai parlare fino al giorno che queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole che si adempiranno a suo tempo. Il popolo intanto stava aspettando Zaccaria, e si maravigliava che s’indugiasse tanto nel tempio. Ma quando fu uscito, non potea parlar loro; e capirono che avea avuto una visione nel tempio; ed egli faceva loro dei segni e rimase muto. E quando furon compiuti i giorni del suo ministero, egli se ne andò a casa sua. Or dopo que’ giorni, Elisabetta sua moglie rimase incinta; e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi, dicendo: Ecco quel che il Signore ha fatto per me ne’ giorni nei quali ha rivolto a me lo sguardo per togliere il mio vituperio fra gli uomini. Al sesto mese l’angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città di Galilea detta Nazaret ad una vergine fidanzata ad un uomo chiamato Giuseppe della casa di Davide; e il nome della vergine era Maria. E l’angelo, entrato da lei, disse: Ti saluto, o favorita dalla grazia; il Signore è teco. Ed ella fu turbata a questa parola, e si domandava che cosa volesse dire un tal saluto. E l’angelo le disse: Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. Ed ecco tu concepirai nel seno e partorirai un figliuolo e gli porrai nome Gesù. Questi sarà grande, e sarà chiamato Figliuol dell’Altissimo, e il Signore Iddio gli darà il trono di Davide suo padre, ed egli regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno, e il suo regno non avrà mai fine. E Maria disse all’angelo: Come avverrà questo, poiché non conosco uomo? E l’angelo, rispondendo, le disse: Lo Spirito Santo verrà su di te e la potenza dell’Altissimo ti coprirà dell’ombra sua; perciò ancora il santo che nascerà sarà chiamato Figliuolo di Dio. Ed ecco, Elisabetta, tua parente, ha concepito anche lei un figliuolo nella sua vecchiaia; e questo è il sesto mese per lei, ch’era chiamata sterile; poiché nessuna parola di Dio rimarrà inefficace. E Maria disse: Ecco, io son l’ancella del Signore; siami fatto secondo la tua parola. E l’angelo si partì da lei. Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.

2 Corinzi 13

Questa è la terza volta ch’io vengo da voi. Ogni parola sarà confermata dalla bocca di due o di tre testimoni. Ho avvertito quand’ero presente fra voi la seconda volta, e avverto, ora che sono assente, tanto quelli che hanno peccato per l’innanzi, quanto tutti gli altri, che, se tornerò da voi, non userò indulgenza; giacché cercate la prova che Cristo parla in me: Cristo che verso voi non è debole, ma è potente in voi. Poiché egli fu crocifisso per la sua debolezza; ma vive per la potenza di Dio; e anche noi siam deboli in lui, ma vivremo con lui per la potenza di Dio, nel nostro procedere verso di voi. Esaminate voi stessi per vedere se siete nella fede; provate voi stessi. Non riconoscete voi medesimi che Gesù Cristo è in voi? A meno che proprio siate riprovati. Ma io spero che riconoscerete che noi non siamo riprovati. Or noi preghiamo Iddio che non facciate alcun male; non già per apparir noi approvati, ma perché voi facciate quello che è bene, anche se noi abbiam da passare per riprovati. Perché noi non possiamo nulla contro la verità; quel che possiamo è per la verità. Poiché noi ci rallegriamo quando siamo deboli e voi siete forti; e i nostri voti sono per il vostro perfezionamento. Perciò vi scrivo queste cose mentre sono assente, affinché, quando sarò presente, io non abbia a procedere rigorosamente secondo l’autorità che il Signore mi ha data per edificare, e non per distruggere. Del resto, fratelli, rallegratevi, procacciate la perfezione, siate consolati, abbiate un medesimo sentimento, vivete in pace; e l’Iddio dell’amore e della pace sarà con voi. Salutatevi gli uni gli altri con un santo bacio. (G13-12) Tutti i santi vi salutano. (G13-13) La grazia del Signor Gesù Cristo e l’amore di Dio e la comunione dello Spirito Santo siano con tutti voi.
