The pride of the height is the firmament in its clearness, The appearance of heaven, in the spectacle of its glory. The sun when he appears, bringing tidings as he goes forth, Is a marvelous instrument, the work of the Most High: At his noon he dries up the country, And who shall stand against his burning heat? A man blowing a furnace is in works of heat, But the sun three times more, burning up the mountains: Breathing out fiery vapours, And sending forth bright beams, he dims the eyes. Great is the Lord that made him; And at his word he hastens his course. The moon also is in all things for her season, For a declaration of times, and a sign of the world. From the moon is the sign of the feast day; A light that waneth when she is come to the full. The month is called after her name, Increasing wonderfully in her changing; An instrument of the army on high, Shining forth in the firmament of heaven; The beauty of heaven, the glory of the stars, An ornament giving light in the highest places of the Lord. At the word of the Holy One they will stand in due order, And they will not faint in their watches. Look upon the rainbow, and praise him that made it; Exceeding beautiful in the brightness thereof. It encircles the heaven round about with a circle of glory; The hands of the Most High have stretched it. By his commandment he makes the snow to fall apace, And sends swiftly the lightnings of his judgement. By reason thereof the treasure-houses are opened; And clouds fly forth as fowls. By his mighty power he makes strong the clouds, And the hailstones are broken small: And at his appearing the mountains will be shaken, And at his will the south wind will blow. The voice of his thunder makes the earth to travail; So does the northern storm and the whirlwind: As birds flying down he sprinkleth the snow; And as the lighting of the locust is the falling down thereof: The eye will marvel at the beauty of its whiteness, And the heart will be astonished at the raining of it. The hoar frost also he pours on the earth as salt; And when it is congealed, it is as points of thorns. The cold north wind shall blow, And the ice shall be congealed on the water: It shall lodge upon every gathering together of water, And the water shall put on as it were a breastplate. It shall devour the mountains, and burn up the wilderness, And consume the green herb as fire. A mist coming speedily is the healing of all things; A dew coming after heat shall bring cheerfulness. By his counsel he has stilled the deep, And planted islands therein. They that sail on the sea tell of the danger thereof; And when we hear it with our ears, we marvel. Therein be also those strange and wondrous works, Variety of all that has life, the race of sea-monsters. By reason of him his end has success, And by his word all things consist. We may say many things, yet shall we not attain; And the sum of our words is, He is all. How shall we have strength to glorify him? For he is himself the great one above all his works. The Lord is terrible and exceeding great; And marvelous is his power. When you⌃ glorify the Lord, exalt him as much as you⌃ can; For even yet will he exceed: And when you⌃ exalt him, put forth your full strength: Be not weary; for you⌃ will never attain. Who has seen him, that he may declare him? And who shall magnify him as he is? Many things are hidden greater than these; For we have seen but a few of his works. For the Lord made all things; And to the godly gave he wisdom.

Giovanni 7

Dopo queste cose, Gesù andava attorno per la Galilea; non voleva andare attorno per la Giudea perché i Giudei cercavan d’ucciderlo. Or la festa de’ Giudei, detta delle Capanne, era vicina. Perciò i suoi fratelli gli dissero: Partiti di qua e vattene in Giudea, affinché i tuoi discepoli veggano anch’essi le opere che tu fai. Poiché niuno fa cosa alcuna in segreto, quando cerca d’esser riconosciuto pubblicamente. Se tu fai codeste cose, palesati al mondo. Poiché neppure i suoi fratelli credevano in lui. Gesù quindi disse loro: Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo, invece, è sempre pronto. Il mondo non può odiar voi; ma odia me, perché io testimonio di lui che le sue opere sono malvagie. Salite voi alla festa; io non salgo ancora a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto. E dette loro queste cose, rimase in Galilea. Quando poi i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora vi salì anche lui; non palesemente, ma come di nascosto. I Giudei dunque lo cercavano durante la festa, e dicevano: Dov’è egli? E v’era fra le turbe gran mormorio intorno a lui. Gli uni dicevano: E’ un uomo dabbene! Altri dicevano: No, anzi, travia la moltitudine! Nessuno però parlava di lui apertamente, per paura de’ Giudei. Or quando s’era già a metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare. Onde i Giudei si maravigliavano e dicevano: Come mai s’intende costui di lettere, senz’aver fatto studi? E Gesù rispose loro e disse: La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di Colui che mi ha mandato. Se uno vuol fare la volontà di lui, conoscerà se questa dottrina è da Dio o se io parlo di mio. Chi parla di suo cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che l’ha mandato, egli è verace e non v’è ingiustizia in lui. Mosè non v’ha egli data la legge? Eppure nessun di voi mette ad effetto la legge! Perché cercate d’uccidermi? La moltitudine rispose: Tu hai un demonio! Chi cerca d’ucciderti? Gesù rispose e disse loro: Un’opera sola ho fatto, e tutti ve ne maravigliate. Mosè v’ha dato la circoncisione (non che venga da Mosè, ma viene dai padri); e voi circoncidete l’uomo in giorno di sabato. Se un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato affinché la legge di Mosè non sia violata, vi adirate voi contro a me perché in giorno di sabato ho guarito un uomo tutto intero? Non giudicate secondo l’apparenza, ma giudicate con giusto giudizio. Dicevano dunque alcuni di Gerusalemme: Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere? Eppure, ecco, egli parla liberamente, e non gli dicon nulla. Avrebbero mai i capi riconosciuto per davvero ch’egli è il Cristo? Eppure, costui sappiamo donde sia; ma quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà donde egli sia. Gesù dunque, insegnando nel tempio, esclamò: Voi e mi conoscete e sapete di dove sono; però io non son venuto da me, ma Colui che mi ha mandato è verità, e voi non lo conoscete. Io lo conosco, perché vengo da lui, ed è Lui che mi ha mandato. Cercavan perciò di pigliarlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché l’ora sua non era ancora venuta. Ma molti della folla credettero in lui, e dicevano: Quando il Cristo sarà venuto, farà egli più miracoli che questi non abbia fatto? I Farisei udirono la moltitudine mormorare queste cose di lui; e i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei mandarono delle guardie a pigliarlo. Perciò Gesù disse loro: Io sono ancora con voi per poco tempo; poi me ne vo a Colui che mi ha mandato. Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove io sarò, voi non potete venire. Perciò i Giudei dissero fra loro: Dove dunque andrà egli che noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse a quelli che son dispersi fra i Greci, ad ammaestrare i Greci? Che significa questo suo dire: Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e: Dove io sarò voi non potete venire? Or nell’ultimo giorno, il gran giorno della festa, Gesù, stando in piè, esclamò: Se alcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva. Chi crede in me, come ha detto la Scrittura, fiumi d’acqua viva sgorgheranno dal suo seno. Or disse questo dello Spirito, che doveano ricevere quelli che crederebbero in lui; poiché lo Spirito non era ancora stato dato, perché Gesù non era ancora glorificato. Una parte dunque della moltitudine, udite quelle parole, diceva: Questi è davvero il profeta. Altri dicevano: Questi è il Cristo. Altri, invece, dicevano: Ma è forse dalla Galilea che viene il Cristo? La Scrittura non ha ella detto che il Cristo viene dalla progenie di Davide e da Betleem, il villaggio dove stava Davide? Vi fu dunque dissenso fra la moltitudine, a motivo di lui; e alcuni di loro lo voleano pigliare, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso. Le guardie dunque tornarono dai capi sacerdoti e dai Farisei, i quali dissero loro: Perché non l’avete condotto? Le guardie risposero: Nessun uomo parlò mai come quest’uomo! Onde i Farisei replicaron loro: Siete stati sedotti anche voi? Ha qualcuno de’ capi o de’ Farisei creduto in lui? Ma questa plebe, che non conosce la legge, è maledetta! Nicodemo (un di loro, quello che prima era venuto a lui) disse loro: La nostra legge giudica ella un uomo prima che sia stato udito e che si sappia quel che ha fatto? Essi gli risposero: sei anche tu di Galilea? Investiga, e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta. E ognuno se ne andò a casa sua.

Let us now praise famous men, And our fathers that became the father of us. The Lord manifested in them great glory, Even his mighty power from the beginning. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, And were men renowned for their power, Giving counsel by their understanding, Such as have brought tidings in prophecies: Leaders of the people by their counsels, And by their understanding men of learning for the people; Wise were their words in their instruction: Such as sought out musical tunes, And set forth verses in writing: Rich men furnished with ability, Living peaceably in their habitations: All these were honored in their generations, And were a glory in their days. There be of them, that have left a name behind them, To declare their praises. And some there be, which have no memorial; Who are perished as though they had not been, And are become as though they had not been born; And their children after them. But these were men of mercy, Whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten. With their seed shall remain continually a good inheritance; Their children are within the covenants. Their seed stands fast, And their children for their sakes. Their seed shall remain forever, And their glory shall not be blotted out. Their bodies were buried in peace, And their name lives to all generations. Peoples will declare their wisdom, And the congregation tells out their praise. Enoch pleased the Lord, and was translated, Being an example of repentance to all generations. Noah was found perfect and righteous; In the season of wrath he was taken in exchange for the world; Therefore was there left a remnant to the earth, When the flood came. Everlasting covenants were made with him, That all flesh should no more be blotted out by a flood. Abraham was a great father of a multitude of nations; And there was none found like him in glory; Who kept the law of the Most High, And was taken into covenant with him: In his flesh he established the covenant; And when he was proved, he was found faithful. Therefore he assured him by an oath, That the nations should be blessed in his seed; That he would multiply him as the dust of the earth, And exalt his seed as the stars, And cause them to inherit from sea to sea, And from the River to the utmost part of the earth. In Isaac also did he establish likewise, for Abraham his father’s sake, The blessing of all men, and the covenant: And he made it rest upon the head of Jacob; He acknowledged him in his blessings, And gave to him by inheritance, And divided his portions; Among twelve tribes did he part them.

1 Timoteo 4

Ma lo Spirito dice espressamente che nei tempi a venire alcuni apostateranno dalla fede, dando retta a spiriti seduttori, e a dottrine di demoni per via della ipocrisia di uomini che proferiranno menzogna, segnati di un marchio nella loro propria coscienza; i quali vieteranno il matrimonio e ordineranno l’astensione da cibi che Dio ha creati affinché quelli che credono e hanno ben conosciuta la verità, ne usino con rendimento di grazie. Poiché tutto quel che Dio ha creato è buono; e nulla è da riprovare, se usato con rendimento di grazie; perché è santificato dalla parola di Dio e dalla preghiera. Rappresentando queste cose ai fratelli, tu sarai un buon ministro di Cristo Gesù, nutrito delle parole della fede e della buona dottrina che hai seguìta da presso. Ma schiva le favole profane e da vecchie; esèrcitati invece alla pietà; perché l’esercizio corporale è utile ad poca cosa, mentre la pietà è utile ad ogni cosa, avendo la promessa della vita presente e di quella a venire. Certa è questa parola, e degna d’esser pienamente accettata. Poiché per questo noi fatichiamo e lottiamo: perché abbiamo posto la nostra speranza nell’Iddio vivente, che è il Salvatore di tutti gli uomini, principalmente dei credenti. Ordina queste cose e insegnale. Nessuno sprezzi la tua giovinezza; ma sii d’esempio ai credenti, nel parlare, nella condotta, nell’amore, nella fede, nella castità. Attendi finché io torni, alla lettura, all’esortazione, all’insegnamento. Non trascurare il dono che è in te, il quale ti fu dato per profezia quando ti furono imposte le mani dal collegio degli anziani. Cura queste cose e datti ad esse interamente, affinché il tuo progresso sia manifesto a tutti. Bada a te stesso e all’insegnamento; persevera in queste cose, perché, facendo così, salverai te stesso e quelli che ti ascoltano.
