And after him rose up Nathan To prophesy in the days of David. As is the fat when it is separated from the peace offering, So was David separated from the children of Israel. He played with lions as with kids, And with bears as with lambs of the flock. In his youth did he not kill a giant, And take away reproach from the people, When he lifted up his hand with a sling stone, And beat down the boasting of Goliath? For he called upon the Most High Lord; And he gave him strength in his right hand, To kill a man mighty in war, To exalt the horn of his people. So they glorified him for his ten thousands, And praised him for the blessings of the Lord, In that there was given him a diadem of glory. For he destroyed the enemies on every side, And brought to nothing the Philistines his adversaries, Brake their horn in pieces to this day. In every work of his he gave thanks to the Holy One Most High with words of glory; With his whole heart he sang praise, And loved him that made him. Also he set singers before the altar, And to make sweet melody by their music. He gave comeliness to the feasts, And set in order the seasons to perfection, While they praised his holy name, And the sanctuary sounded from early morning. The Lord took away his sins, And exalted his horn forever; And gave him a covenant of kings, And a throne of glory in Israel. After him rose up a son, a man of understanding; And for his sake he lived at large. Solomon reigned in days of peace; And to him God gave rest round about, That he might set up a house for his name, And prepare a sanctuary forever. How wise was you made in your youth, And filled as a river with understanding! Your soul covered the earth, And you filled it with dark parables. Your name reached to the aisles afar off; And for your peace you were beloved. For your songs and proverbs and parables, And for your interpretations, the countries marveled at you. By the name of the Lord God, Which is called the God of Israel, You did gather gold as tin, And did multiply silver as lead. You did bow your loins to women, And in your body you were brought into subjection. You did blemish your honor, And profane your seed, To bring wrath upon your children; And I was grieved for your folly: So that the sovereignty was divided, And out of Ephraim ruled a disobedient kingdom. But the Lord will never forsake his mercy; And he will not destroy any of his works, Nor blot out the posterity of his elect; And the seed of him that loved him he will not take away; And he gave a remnant to Jacob, And to David a root out of him. And so rested Solomon with his fathers; And of his seed he left behind him Rehoboam, Even the foolishness of the people, and one that lacked understanding, Who made the people to revolt by his counsel. Also Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Who made Israel to sin, And gave to Ephraim a way of sin. And their sins were multiplied exceedingly, To remove them from their land. For they sought out all manner of wickedness, Till vengeance should come upon them.

Giovanni 9

E passando vide un uomo ch’era cieco fin dalla nascita. E i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono, dicendo: Maestro, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco? Gesù rispose: Né lui peccò, né i suoi genitori; ma è così, affinché le opere di Dio siano manifestate in lui. Bisogna che io compia le opere di Colui che mi ha mandato, mentre è giorno; la notte viene in cui nessuno può operare. Mentre sono nel mondo, io sono la luce del mondo. Detto questo, sputò in terra, fece del fango con la saliva e ne spalmò gli occhi del cieco, e gli disse: Va’, làvati nella vasca di Siloe (che significa: mandato). Egli dunque andò e si lavò, e tornò che ci vedeva. Perciò i vicini e quelli che per l’innanzi l’avean veduto, perché era mendicante, dicevano: Non è egli quello che stava seduto a chieder l’elemosina? Gli uni dicevano: E’ lui. Altri dicevano: No, ma gli somiglia. Egli diceva: Son io. Allora essi gli domandarono: Com’è che ti sono stati aperti gli occhi? Egli rispose: Quell’uomo che si chiama Gesù fece del fango, me ne spalmò gli occhi e mi disse: Vattene a Siloe e làvati. Io quindi sono andato, e mi son lavato e ho ricuperato la vista. Ed essi gli dissero: Dov’è costui? Egli rispose: Non so. Menarono a’ Farisei colui ch’era stato cieco. Or era in giorno di sabato che Gesù avea fatto il fango e gli avea aperto gli occhi. I Farisei dunque gli domandaron di nuovo anch’essi com’egli avesse ricuperata la vista. Ed egli disse loro: Egli mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi son lavato, e ci veggo. Perciò alcuni dei Farisei dicevano: Quest’uomo non è da Dio perché non osserva il sabato. Ma altri dicevano: Come può un uomo peccatore far tali miracoli? E v’era disaccordo fra loro. Essi dunque dissero di nuovo al cieco: E tu, che dici di lui, dell’averti aperto gli occhi? Egli rispose: E’ un profeta. I Giudei dunque non credettero di lui che fosse stato cieco e avesse ricuperata la vista, finché non ebbero chiamati i genitori di colui che avea ricuperata la vista, e li ebbero interrogati così: E’ questo il vostro figliuolo che dite esser nato cieco? Com’è dunque che ora ci vede? I suoi genitori risposero: Sappiamo che questo è nostro figliuolo, e che è nato cieco; ma come ora ci veda, non sappiamo; né sappiamo chi gli abbia aperti gli occhi; domandatelo a lui; egli è d’età; parlerà lui di sé. Questo dissero i suoi genitori perché avean paura de’ Giudei; poiché i Giudei avean già stabilito che se uno riconoscesse Gesù come Cristo, fosse espulso dalla sinagoga. Per questo dissero i suoi genitori: Egli è d’età, domandatelo a lui. Essi dunque chiamarono per la seconda volta l’uomo ch’era stato cieco, e gli dissero: Da’ gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quell’uomo è un peccatore. Egli rispose: S’egli sia un peccatore, non so, una cosa so, che ero cieco e ora ci vedo. Essi allora gli dissero: Che ti fece egli? Come t’aprì gli occhi? Egli rispose loro: Ve l’ho già detto e voi non avete ascoltato; perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse anche voi diventar suoi discepoli? Essi l’ingiuriarono e dissero: Sei tu discepolo di costui; ma noi siam discepoli di Mosè. Noi sappiamo che a Mosè Dio ha parlato; ma quant’è a costui, non sappiamo di dove sia. Quell’uomo rispose e disse loro: Questo poi è strano: che voi non sappiate di dove sia; eppure, m’ha aperto gli occhi! Si sa che Dio non esaudisce i peccatori; ma se uno è pio verso Dio e fa la sua volontà, quello egli esaudisce. Da che mondo è mondo non s’è mai udito che uno abbia aperto gli occhi ad un cieco nato. Se quest’uomo non fosse da Dio, non potrebbe far nulla. Essi risposero e gli dissero: Tu sei tutto quanto nato nel peccato e insegni a noi? E lo cacciaron fuori. Gesù udì che l’avean cacciato fuori; e trovatolo gli disse: Credi tu nel Figliuol di Dio? Colui rispose: E chi è egli, Signore, perché io creda in lui? Gesù gli disse: Tu l’hai già veduto; e quei che parla teco, è lui. Ed egli disse: Signore, io credo. E gli si prostrò dinanzi. E Gesù disse: Io son venuto in questo mondo per fare un giudizio, affinché quelli che non vedono vedano, e quelli che vedono diventino ciechi. E quelli de’ Farisei che eran con lui udirono queste cose e gli dissero: Siamo ciechi anche noi? Gesù rispose loro: Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: Noi vediamo, il vostro peccato rimane.

Also there arose Elijah the prophet as fire, And his word burned like a torch: Who brought a famine upon them, And by his zeal made them few in number. By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven: Thrice did he thus bring down fire. How was you glorified, O Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! And who shall glory like to you? Who did raise up a dead man from death, And from the place of the dead, by the word of the Most High: Who brought down kings to destruction, And honorable men from their bed: Who heard rebuke in Sinai, And judgements of vengeance in Horeb: Who anointed kings for retribution, And prophets to succeed after him: Who was taken up in a tempest of fire, In a chariot of fiery horses: Who was recorded for reproofs in their seasons, To pacify anger, before it brake forth into wrath; To turn the heart of the father to the son, And to restore the tribes of Jacob. Blessed are those who saw you, And those who have been beautified with love; For we also shall surely live. Elijah it was, who was wrapped in a tempest: And Elisha was filled with his spirit; And in all his days he was not moved by the fear of any ruler, And no one brought him into subjection. Nothing was too high for him; And when he was laid on sleep his body prophesied. As in his life he did wonders, So in death were his works marvelous. For all this the people repented not, And they departed not from their sins, Till they were carried away as a plunder from their land, And were scattered through all the earth; And the people was left very few in number, And a ruler was left in the house of David. Some of them did that which was pleasing to God, And some multiplied sins. Hezekiah fortified his city, And brought in water into the midst of them: He digged the sheer rock with iron, And built up wells for waters. In his days Sennacherib came up, And sent Rabshakeh, and departed; And he lifted up his hand against Sion, And boasted great things in his arrogancy. Then were their hearts and their hands shaken, And they were in pain, as women in travail; And they called upon the Lord which is merciful, Spreading forth their hands to him: And the Holy One heard them speedily out of Heaven, And delivered them by the hand of Isaiah. He struck the camp of the Assyrians, And his angel utterly destroyed them. For Hezekiah did that which was pleasing to the Lord, And was strong in the ways of David his father, Which Isaiah the prophet commanded, Who was great and faithful in his vision. In his days the sun went backward; And he added life to the king. He saw by an excellent spirit what should come to pass at the last; And he comforted those who mourned in Sion. He showed the things that should be to the end of time, And the hidden things or ever they came.

1 Timoteo 6

Tutti coloro che sono sotto il giogo della servitù, reputino i loro padroni come degni d’ogni onore, affinché il nome di Dio e la dottrina non vengano biasimati. E quelli che hanno padroni credenti non li disprezzino perché son fratelli, ma tanto più li servano, perché quelli che ricevono il beneficio del loro servizio sono fedeli e diletti. Queste cose insegna e ad esse esorta. Se qualcuno insegna una dottrina diversa e non s’attiene alle sane parole del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo e alla dottrina che è secondo pietà, esso è gonfio e non sa nulla; ma langue intorno a questioni e dispute di parole, dalle quali nascono invidia, contenzione, maldicenza, cattivi sospetti, acerbe discussioni d’uomini corrotti di mente e privati della verità, i quali stimano la pietà esser fonte di guadagno. Or la pietà con animo contento del proprio stato, è un grande guadagno; poiché non abbiam portato nulla nel mondo, perché non ne possiamo neanche portar via nulla; ma avendo di che nutrirci e di che coprirci, saremo di questo contenti. Ma quelli che vogliono arricchire cadono in tentazione, in laccio, e in molte insensate e funeste concupiscenze, che affondano gli uomini nella distruzione e nella perdizione. Poiché l’amor del danaro è radice d’ogni sorta di mali; e alcuni che vi si sono dati, si sono sviati dalla fede e si son trafitti di molti dolori. Ma tu, o uomo di Dio, fuggi queste cose, e procaccia giustizia, pietà, fede, amore, costanza, dolcezza. Combatti il buon combattimento della fede, afferra la vita eterna alla quale sei stato chiamato e in vista della quale facesti quella bella confessione in presenza di molti testimoni. Nel cospetto di Dio che vivifica tutte le cose, e di Cristo Gesù che rese testimonianza dinanzi a Ponzio Pilato con quella bella confessione, io t’ingiungo d’osservare il comandamento divino da uomo immacolato, irreprensibile, fino all’apparizione del nostro Signor Gesù Cristo, la quale sarà a suo tempo manifestata dal beato e unico Sovrano, il Re dei re e Signor dei signori, il quale solo possiede l’immortalità ed abita una luce inaccessibile; il quale nessun uomo ha veduto né può vedere; al quale siano onore e potenza eterna. Amen. A quelli che son ricchi in questo mondo ordina che non siano d’animo altero, che non ripongano la loro speranza nell’incertezza delle ricchezze, ma in Dio, il quale ci somministra copiosamente ogni cosa perché ne godiamo; che facciano del bene, che siano ricchi in buone opere, pronti a dare, a far parte dei loro averi, in modo da farsi un tesoro ben fondato per l’avvenire, a fin di conseguire la vera vita. O Timoteo, custodisci il deposito, schivando le profane vacuità di parole e le opposizioni di quella che falsamente si chiama scienza, della quale alcuni facendo professione, si sono sviati dalla fede. La grazia sia con voi.
