This is the book of the commandments of God, and the law that endures for ever: all those who hold it fast are appointed to life; but such as leave it shall die. Turn you, O Jacob, and take hold of it: walk towards her shining in the presence of the light thereof. Give not your glory to another, nor the things that are profitable to you to a strange nation. O Israel, happy are we: for the things that are pleasing to God are made known to us. Be of good cheer, my people, the memorial of Israel. You⌃ were sold to the nations, but not for destruction: because you⌃ moved God to wrath, you⌃ were delivered to your adversaries. For you⌃ provoked him that made you by sacrificing to demons, and not to God. You⌃ forgat the everlasting God, that brought you up; you⌃ grieved also Jerusalem, that nursed you. For she saw the wrath that is come upon you from God, and said, Hearken, you⌃ women that dwell about Sion: for God has brought upon me great mourning; for I have seen the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting has brought upon them. For with joy did I nourish them; but sent them away with weeping and mourning. Let no man rejoice over me, a widow, and forsaken of many: for the sins of my children am I left desolate; because they turned away from the law of God, and had no regard to his statutes, neither walked they in the ways of God’s commandments, nor trod in the paths of discipline in his righteousness. Let those who dwell about Sion come, and remember you⌃ the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting has brought upon them. For he has brought a nation upon them from far, a shameless nation, and of a strange language, who neither reverenced old man, nor pitied child. And they have carried away the dear beloved sons of the widow, and left her that was alone desolate of her daughters. But I, what can I help you? For he that brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hand of your enemies. Go your way, O my children, go your way: for I am left desolate. I have put off the garment of peace, and put upon me the sackcloth of my petition: I will cry to the Everlasting as long as I live. Be of good cheer, O my children, cry to God, and he shall deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies. For I have trusted in the Everlasting, that he will save you; and joy is come to me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which shall soon come to you from the Everlasting your Saviour. For I sent you out with mourning and weeping: but God will give you to me again with joy and gladness forever. For like as now those who dwell about Sion have seen your captivity: so shall they see shortly your salvation from our God, which shall come upon you with great glory, and brightness of the Everlasting. My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God: for your enemy has persecuted you; but shortly you shall see his destruction, and shall tread upon their necks. My delicate ones have gone rough ways; they were taken away as a flock carried off by the enemies. Be of good cheer, O my children, and cry to God: for you⌃ shall be remembered of him that has brought these things upon you. For as it was your mind to go astray from God: so, return and seek him ten times more. For he that brought these plagues upon you shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation. Be of good cheer, O Jerusalem: for he that called you by name will comfort you. Miserable are those who afflicted you, and rejoiced at your fall. Miserable are the cities which your children served: miserable is she that received your sons. For as she rejoiced at your fall, and was glad of your ruin: so shall she be grieved for her own desolation. And I will take away her exultation in her great multitude, and her boasting shall be turned into mourning. For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting, long to endure; and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time. O Jerusalem, look about you toward the east, and behold the joy that comes to you from God. Behold, your sons come, whom you sent away, they come gathered together from the east to the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.

Giovanni 13

Or avanti la festa di Pasqua, Gesù, sapendo che era venuta per lui l’ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine. E durante la cena, quando il diavolo avea già messo in cuore a Giuda Iscariot, figliuol di Simone, di tradirlo, Gesù, sapendo che il Padre gli avea dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio se ne tornava, si levò da tavola, depose le sue vesti, e preso un asciugatoio, se ne cinse. Poi mise dell’acqua nel bacino, e cominciò a lavare i piedi a’ discepoli, e ad asciugarli con l’asciugatoio del quale era cinto. Venne dunque a Simon Pietro, il quale gli disse: Tu, Signore, lavare i piedi a me? Gesù gli rispose: Tu non sai ora quello che io fo, ma lo capirai dopo. Pietro gli disse: Tu non mi laverai mai i piedi! Gesù gli rispose: Se non ti lavo, non hai meco parte alcuna. E Simon Pietro: Signore, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo! Gesù gli disse: Chi è lavato tutto non ha bisogno che d’aver lavati i piedi; è netto tutto quanto; e voi siete netti, ma non tutti. Perché sapeva chi era colui che lo tradirebbe; per questo disse: Non tutti siete netti. Come dunque ebbe loro lavato i piedi ed ebbe ripreso le sue vesti, si mise di nuovo a tavola, e disse loro: Capite quel che v’ho fatto? Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore; e dite bene, perché lo sono. Se dunque io, che sono il Signore e il Maestro, v’ho lavato i piedi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni agli altri. Poiché io v’ho dato un esempio, affinché anche voi facciate come v’ho fatto io. In verità, in verità vi dico che il servitore non è maggiore del suo signore, né il messo è maggiore di colui che l’ha mandato. Se sapete queste cose, siete beati se le fate. Io non parlo di voi tutti; io so quelli che ho scelti; ma, perché sia adempita la Scrittura, colui che mangia il mio pane, ha levato contro di me il suo calcagno. Fin da ora ve lo dico, prima che accada; affinché, quando sia accaduto, voi crediate che sono io (il Cristo). In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi riceve colui che io avrò mandato, riceve me; e chi riceve me, riceve Colui che mi ha mandato. Dette queste cose, Gesù fu turbato nello spirito, e così apertamente si espresse: In verità, in verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà. I discepoli si guardavano l’un l’altro, stando in dubbio di chi parlasse. Or, a tavola, inclinato sul seno di Gesù, stava uno de’ discepoli, quello che Gesù amava. Simon Pietro quindi gli fe’ cenno e gli disse: Di’, chi è quello del quale parla? Ed egli, chinatosi così sul petto di Gesù, gli domandò: Signore, chi è? Gesù rispose: E’ quello al quale darò il boccone dopo averlo intinto. E intinto un boccone, lo prese e lo diede a Giuda figlio di Simone Iscariota. E allora, dopo il boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Per cui Gesù gli disse: Quel che fai, fallo presto. Ma nessuno de’ commensali intese perché gli avesse detto così. Difatti alcuni pensavano, siccome Giuda tenea la borsa, che Gesù gli avesse detto: Compra quel che ci abbisogna per la festa; ovvero che desse qualcosa ai poveri. Egli dunque, preso il boccone, uscì subito; ed era notte. Quand’egli fu uscito, Gesù disse: Ora il Figliuol dell’uomo è glorificato, e Dio è glorificato in lui. Se Dio è glorificato in lui, Dio lo glorificherà anche in se stesso, e presto lo glorificherà. Figliuoletti, è per poco che sono ancora con voi. Voi mi cercherete; e, come ho detto ai Giudei: "Dove vo io, voi non potete venire", così lo dico ora a voi. Io vi do un nuovo comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri. Com’io v’ho amati, anche voi amatevi gli uni gli altri. Da questo conosceranno tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avete amore gli uni per gli altri. Simon Pietro gli domandò: Signore, dove vai? Gesù rispose: Dove io vado, non puoi per ora seguirmi; ma mi seguirai più tardi. Pietro gli disse: Signore, perché non posso seguirti ora? Metterò la mia vita per te! Gesù gli rispose: Metterai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico che il gallo non canterà che già tu non m’abbia rinnegato tre volte.

Put off, O Jerusalem, the garment of your mourning and affliction, and put on the comeliness of the glory that comes from God forever. Cast about you the robe of the righteousness which comes from God; set a diadem on your head of the glory of the Everlasting. For God will show your brightness to every region under heaven. For your name shall be called of God forever The peace of righteousness, and The glory of godliness. Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand upon the height, and look about you toward the east, and behold your children gathered from the going down of the sun to the rising thereof at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. For they went from you on foot, being led away of their enemies: but God brings them in to you borne on high with glory, as on a royal throne. For God has appointed that every high mountain, and the everlasting hills, should be made low, and the valleys filled up, to make plain the ground, that Israel may go safely in the glory of God. Moreover the woods and every sweet smelling tree have overshadowed Israel by the commandment of God. For God shall lead Israel with joy in the light of his glory with the mercy and righteousness that comes from him.

2 Timoteo 4

Io te ne scongiuro nel cospetto di Dio e di Cristo Gesù che ha da giudicare i vivi e i morti, e per la sua apparizione e per il suo regno: Predica la Parola, insisti a tempo e fuor di tempo, riprendi, sgrida, esorta con grande pazienza e sempre istruendo. Perché verrà il tempo che non sopporteranno la sana dottrina; ma per prurito d’udire si accumuleranno dottori secondo le loro proprie voglie e distoglieranno le orecchie dalla verità e si volgeranno alle favole. Ma tu sii vigilante in ogni cosa, soffri afflizioni, fa l’opera d’evangelista, compi tutti i doveri del tuo ministerio. Quanto a me io sto per esser offerto a mo’ di libazione, e il tempo della mia dipartenza è giunto. Io ho combattuto il buon combattimento, ho finito la corsa, ho serbata la fede; del rimanente mi è riservata la corona di giustizia che il Signore, il giusto giudice, mi assegnerà in quel giorno; e non solo a me, ma anche a tutti quelli che avranno amato la sua apparizione. Studiati di venir tosto da me; poiché Dema, avendo amato il presente secolo, mi ha lasciato e se n’è andato a Tessalonica. Crescente è andato in Galazia, Tito in Dalmazia. Luca solo è meco. Prendi Marco e menalo teco; poich’egli mi è molto utile per il ministerio. Quanto a Tichico l’ho mandato ad Efeso. Quando verrai porta il mantello che ho lasciato a Troas da Carpo, e i libri, specialmente le pergamene. Alessandro, il ramaio, mi ha fatto del male assai. Il Signore gli renderà secondo le sue opere. Da lui guardati anche tu, poiché egli ha fortemente contrastato alle nostre parole. Nella mia prima difesa nessuno s’è trovato al mio fianco, ma tutti mi hanno abbandonato; non sia loro imputato! Ma il Signore è stato meco e m’ha fortificato, affinché il Vangelo fosse per mezzo mio pienamente proclamato e tutti i Gentili l’udissero; e sono stato liberato dalla gola del leone. Il Signore mi libererà da ogni mala azione e mi salverà nel suo regno celeste. A lui sia la gloria ne’ secoli dei secoli. Amen. Saluta Prisca ed Aquila e la famiglia d’Onesiforo. Erasto è rimasto a Corinto; e Trofimo l’ho lasciato infermo a Mileto. Studiati di venire prima dell’inverno. Ti salutano Eubulo e Pudente e Lino e Claudia e i fratelli tutti. Il Signore sia col tuo spirito. La grazia sia con voi.
