Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Asshur, was told that the children of Israel had prepared for war, had shut up the passages of the hill country, had fortified all the tops of the high hills, and had laid impediments in the plains. Then he was exceedingly angry, and he called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast, and he said to them, “Tell me now, you sons of Canaan, who are these people who dwell in the hill country? What are the cities that they inhabit? How large is their army? Where is their power and their strength? What king is set over them, to be the leader of their army? Why have they turned their backs, that they should not come and meet me, more than all that dwell in the west?” Then Achior, the leader of all the children of Ammon, said to him, “Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth concerning these people who dwell in this hill country, near to the place where you dwell. No lie will come out of the mouth of your servant. These people are descended from the Chaldeans. They sojourned before this in Mesopotamia, because they didn’t want to follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of the Chaldeans. They departed from the way of their parents, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew. Their parents cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days. Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Canaan. They lived there, and prospered with gold and silver, and with exceedingly much cattle. Then they went down into Egypt, for a famine covered all the land of Canaan. They sojourned there until they had grown up. They became a great multitude there, so that one could not count the population of their nation. Then the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtly with them, and brought them low, making them labor in brick, and made them slaves. They cried to their God, and he struck all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues; so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight. God dried up the Red sea before them, and brought them into the way of Sinai Kadesh-Barnea, and they cast out all that lived in the wilderness. They lived in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength everyone in Heshbon. Passing over Jordan, they possessed all the hill country. They cast out before them the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Shechemite, and all the Girgashites, and they lived in that country many days. And while they didn’t sin not before their God, they prospered, because God who hates iniquity was with them. But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many severe battles, and were led captives into a land that was not theirs. The temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by their adversaries. And now they have returned to their God, and have come up from the dispersion where they were dispersed, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate. And now, my lord and master, if there is any error in this people, and they sin against their God, we will consider what this thing is in which they stumble, and we will go up and overcome them. But if there is no lawlessness in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we will be a reproach before all the earth.” It came to pass, when Achior had finished speaking these words, all the people standing around the tent murmured. The great men of Holofernes, and all that lived by the sea side and in Moab, said that he should kill him. For, they said, “We will not be afraid of the children of Israel, bcause, behold, they are a people that has no power nor might to make the battle strong. Therefore now we will go up, and they will be a prey to be devoured by all your army, Lord Holofernes.”

Poi, levatosi di là, se ne andò sui confini della Giudea, ed oltre il Giordano; e di nuovo di raunarono presso a lui delle turbe; ed egli di nuovo, come soleva, le ammaestrava. E de’ Farisei, accostatisi, gli domandarono, tentandolo: E’ egli lecito ad un marito di mandar via la moglie? Ed egli rispose loro: Mosè che v’ha egli comandato? Ed essi dissero: Mosè permise di scrivere una atto di divorzio e mandarla via. E Gesù disse loro: E’ per la durezza del vostro cuore ch’egli scrisse per voi quel precetto; ma al principio della creazione Iddio li fece maschio e femmina. Perciò l’uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre, e i due saranno una sola carne. Talché non sono più due, ma una stessa carne. Quello dunque che Iddio ha congiunto l’uomo nol separi. E in casa i discepoli lo interrogarono di nuovo sullo stesso soggetto. Ed egli disse loro: Chiunque manda via sua moglie e ne sposa un’altra, commette adulterio verso di lei; e se la moglie, ripudiato il marito, ne sposa un altro, commette adulterio. Or gli presentavano dei bambini perché li toccasse; ma i discepoli sgridavan coloro che glieli presentavano. E Gesù, veduto ciò, s’indignò e disse loro: Lasciate i piccoli fanciulli venire a me; non glielo vietate, perché di tali è il regno di Dio. In verità io vi dico che chiunque non avrà ricevuto il regno di Dio come un piccolo fanciullo, non entrerà punto in esso. E presili in braccio ed imposte loro le mani, li benediceva. Or com’egli usciva per mettersi in cammino, un tale accorse e inginocchiatosi davanti a lui, gli domandò: Maestro buono, che farò io per ereditare la vita eterna? E Gesù gli disse: Perché mi chiami buono? Nessuno è buono, tranne uno solo, cioè Iddio. Tu sai i comandamenti: Non uccidere; non commettere adulterio; non rubare; non dir falsa testimonianza; non far torto ad alcuno; onora tuo padre e tua madre. Ed egli rispose: Maestro, tutte queste cose io le ho osservate fin dalla mia giovinezza. E Gesù, riguardatolo in viso, l’amò e gli disse: Una cosa ti manca; va’, vendi tutto ciò che hai, e dallo ai poveri, e tu avrai un tesoro nel cielo; poi vieni e seguimi. Ma egli, attristato da quella parola, se ne andò dolente, perché avea di gran beni. E Gesù, guardatosi attorno, disse ai suoi discepoli: Quanto malagevolmente coloro che hanno delle ricchezze entreranno nel regno di Dio! E i discepoli sbigottirono a queste sue parole. E Gesù da capo replicò loro: Figliuoli, quant’è malagevole a coloro che si confidano nelle ricchezze entrare nel regno di Dio! E’ più facile a un cammello passare per la cruna d’un ago, che ad un ricco entrare nel regno di Dio. Ed essi vie più stupivano, dicendo fra loro: Chi dunque può esser salvato? E Gesù, riguardatili, disse: Agli uomini è impossibile, ma non a Dio; perché tutto è possibile a Dio. E Pietro prese a dirgli: Ecco, noi abbiamo lasciato ogni cosa e t’abbiam seguitato. E Gesù rispose: Io vi dico in verità che non v’è alcuno che abbia lasciato casa, o fratelli, o sorelle, o madre, o padre, o figliuoli, o campi, per amor di me e per amor dell’evangelo, il quale ora, in questo tempo, non ne riceva cento volte tanto: case, fratelli, sorelle, madri, figliuoli, campi, insieme a persecuzioni; e nel secolo avvenire, la vita eterna. Ma molti primi saranno ultimi e molti ultimi, primi. Or erano per cammino salendo a Gerusalemme, e Gesù andava innanzi a loro; ed essi erano sbigottiti; e quelli che lo seguivano eran presi da timore. Ed egli, tratti di nuovo da parte i dodici, prese a dir loro le cose che gli avverrebbero: Ecco, noi saliamo a Gerusalemme, e il Figliuol dell’uomo sarà dato nelle mani de’ capi sacerdoti e degli scribi; ed essi lo condanneranno a morte e lo metteranno nelle mani dei Gentili; e lo scherniranno e gli sputeranno addosso e lo flagelleranno e l’uccideranno; e dopo tre giorni egli risusciterà. E Giacomo e Giovanni, figliuoli di Zebedeo, si accostarono a lui, dicendogli: Maestro, desideriamo che tu ci faccia quello che ti chiederemo. Ed egli disse loro: Che volete ch’io vi faccia? Essi gli dissero: Concedici di sedere uno alla tua destra e l’altro alla tua sinistra nella tua gloria. Ma Gesù disse loro: Voi non sapete quel che chiedete. Potete voi bere il calice ch’io bevo, o esser battezzati del battesimo del quale io son battezzato? Essi gli dissero: Sì, lo possiamo. E Gesù disse loro: Voi certo berrete il calice ch’io bevo e sarete battezzati del battesimo del quale io sono battezzato; ma quant’è al sedermi a destra o a sinistra, non sta a me il darlo, ma è per quelli cui è stato preparato. E i dieci, udito ciò, presero a indignarsi di Giacomo e di Giovanni. Ma Gesù, chiamatili a sé, disse loro: Voi sapete che quelli che son reputati principi delle nazioni, le signoreggiano; e che i loro grandi usano potestà sopra di esse. Ma non è così tra voi; anzi chiunque vorrà esser grande fra voi, sarà vostro servitore; e chiunque fra voi vorrà esser primo, sarà servo di tutti. Poiché anche il Figliuol dell’uomo non è venuto per esser servito, ma per servire, e per dar la vita sua come prezzo di riscatto per molti. Poi vennero in Gerico. E come egli usciva di Gerico coi suoi discepoli e con gran moltitudine, il figliuol di Timeo, Bartimeo, cieco mendicante, sedeva presso la strada. E udito che chi passava era Gesù il Nazareno, prese a gridare e a dire: Gesù, figliuol di Davide, abbi pietà di me! E molti lo sgridavano perché tacesse; ma quello gridava più forte: Figliuol di Davide, abbi pietà di me! E Gesù, fermatosi, disse: Chiamatelo! E chiamarono il cieco, dicendogli: Sta’ di buon cuore! Alzati! Egli ti chiama. E il cieco, gettato via il mantello, balzò in piedi e venne a Gesù. E Gesù, rivoltosi a lui, gli disse: Che vuoi ch’io ti faccia? E il cieco gli rispose: Rabbuni, ch’io recuperi la vista. E Gesù gli disse: Va’, la tua fede ti ha salvato. E in quell’istante egli ricuperò la vista e seguiva Gesù per la via.

And when the disturbance of the men that were around the council had ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Asshur said to Achior and to all the children of Moab before all the people of the foreigners, “And who are you, Achior, and the hirelings of Ephraim, that you have prophesied among us as today, and have said that we should not make war with the race of Israel, because their God will defend them? And who is God but Nebuchadnezzar? He will send forth his might, and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them; but we his servants will strike them as one man. They will not sustain the might of our horses. For with them we will burn them up. Their mountains will be drunken with their blood. Their plains will be filled with their dead bodies. Their footsteps will not stand before us, but they will surely perish, says king Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he said, ‘The words that I have spoken will not be in vain.’ But you, Achior, hireling of Ammon, who have spoken these words in the day of your iniquity, will see my face no more from this day, until I am avenged of the race of those that came out of Egypt. And then the sword of my army, and the multitude of those who serve me, will pass through your sides, and you will fall among their slain when I return. Then my servants will bring you back into the hill country, and will set you in one of the cities of the ascents. You will not perish until you are destroyed with them. And if you hope in your heart that they will not be taken, don’t let your countenance fall. I have spoken it, and none of my words will fall to the ground. ” Then Holofernes commanded his servants who waited in his tent to take Achior, and bring him back to Bethulia, and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel. So his servants took him, and brought him out of the camp into the plain, and they moved from the midst of the plains into the hill country, and came to the springs that were under Bethulia. When the men of the city saw them on the top of the hill, they took up their weapons, and went out of the city against them to the top of the hill. Every man that used a sling kept them from coming up, and cast stones against them. They took cover under the hill, bound Achior, cast him down, left him at the foot of the hill, and went away to their lord. But the children of Israel descended from their city, and came to him, untied him, led him away into Bethulia, and presented him to the rulers of their city; which were in those days Ozias the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel. Then they called together all the elders of the city; and all their young men ran together, with their women, to the assembly. They set Achior in the midst of all their people. Then Ozias asked him what had happened. He answered and declared to them the words of the council of Holofernes, and all the words that he had spoken in the midst of the princes of the children of Asshur, and all the great words that Holofernes had spoken against the house of Israel. Then the people fell down and worshipped God, and cried, saying, “O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and pity the low estate of our race. Look upon the face of those who are sanctified to you this day.” They comforted Achior, and praised him exceedingly. Then Ozias took him out of the assembly into his house, and made a feast for the elders. They called on the God of Israel for help all that night.

2 Corinzi 6

Come collaboratori di Dio, noi v’esortiamo pure a far sì che non abbiate ricevuta la grazia di Dio invano; poiché egli dice: T’ho esaudito nel tempo accettevole, e t’ho soccorso nel giorno della salvezza. Eccolo ora il tempo accettevole; eccolo ora il giorno della salvezza! Noi non diamo motivo di scandalo in cosa alcuna, onde il ministerio non sia vituperato; ma in ogni cosa ci raccomandiamo come ministri di Dio per una grande costanza, per afflizioni, necessità, angustie, battiture, prigionie, sommosse, fatiche, veglie, digiuni, per purità, conoscenza, longanimità, benignità, per lo Spirito Santo, per carità non finta; per la parola di verità, per la potenza di Dio; per le armi di giustizia a destra e a sinistra, in mezzo alla gloria e all’ignominia, in mezzo alla buona ed alla cattiva riputazione; tenuti per seduttori, eppur veraci; sconosciuti, eppur ben conosciuti; moribondi, eppur eccoci viventi; castigati, eppur non messi a morte; contristati, eppur sempre allegri; poveri, eppure arricchenti molti; non avendo nulla, eppur possedenti ogni cosa! La nostra bocca vi ha parlato apertamente, o Corinzi; il nostro cuore s’è allargato. Voi non siete allo stretto in noi, ma è il vostro cuore che si è ristretto. Ora, per renderci il contraccambio (parlo come a figliuoli), allargate il cuore anche voi! Non vi mettete con gl’infedeli sotto un giogo che non è per voi; perché qual comunanza v’è egli fra la giustizia e l’iniquità? O qual comunione fra la luce e le tenebre? E quale armonia fra Cristo e Beliar? O che v’è di comune tra il fedele e l’infedele? E quale accordo fra il tempio di Dio e gl’idoli? Poiché noi siamo il tempio dell’Iddio vivente, come disse Iddio: Io abiterò in mezzo a loro e camminerò fra loro; e sarò loro Dio, ed essi saranno mio popolo. Perciò Uscite di mezzo a loro e separatevene, dice il Signore, e non toccate nulla d’immondo; ed io v’accoglierò, e vi sarò per Padre e voi mi sarete per figliuoli e per figliuole, dice il Signore onnipotente.
