When those who were in the tents heard, they were amazed at what happened. Trembling and fear fell upon them, and no man dared stay any more in the sight of his neighbor, but rushing out with one accord, they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill country. Those who had encamped in the hill country round about Bethulia fled away. And then the children of Israel, every one who was a warrior among them, rushed out upon them. Ozias sent to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Chobai, and Chola, and to every coast of Israel, to tell about the things that had been accomplished, and that all should rush upon their enemies to destroy them. But wnen the children of Israel heard, they all fell upon them with one accord, and struck them to Chobai. Yes, and in like manner also they of Jerusalem and of all the hill country came (for men had told them about what happened in their enemies’ camp), and those who were in Gilead and in Galilee fell upon their flank with a great slaughter, until they were past Damascus and its borders. The rest of the people who lived at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Asshur, and plundered them, and were enriched exceedingly. The children of Israel returned from the slaughter, and got possession of that which remained. The villages and the cities that were in the hill country and in the plain country, took many spoils; for there was an exceedingly great supply. Joakim the high priest, and the elders of the children of Israel whe lived in Jerusalem, came to see the good things which the Lord had showed to Israel, and to see Judith, and to salute her. When they came to her, they all blessed her with one accord, and said to her, “You are the exaltation of Jerusalem! You are the great glory of Israel! You are the great rejoicing of our race! You have done all these things by your hand. You have done with Israel the things that are good, and God is pleased with it. Blessed be you with the Almighty Lord for evermore.” And all the people said, “Amen!” And the people plundered the camp for the space of thirty days: and they gave Holofernes’ tent to Judith, along with all his silver cups, his beds, his bowls, and all his furniture. She took them, and placed them on her mule, and prepared her wagons, and heaped them on it. And all the women of Israel ran together to see her; and they blessed her, and made a dance among them for her. She took branches in her hand, and distributed them to the women who were with her. The they made themselves garlands of olive, she and those who were with her, and she went before all the people in the dance, leading all the women. All the men of Israel followed in their armor with garlands, and with songs in their mouths.

Marco 15

E subito la mattina, i capi sacerdoti, con gli anziani e gli scribi e tutto il Sinedrio, tenuto consiglio, legarono Gesù e lo menarono via e lo misero in man di Pilato. E Pilato gli domandò: Sei tu il re dei Giudei? Ed egli, rispondendo, gli disse: Sì, lo sono. E i capi sacerdoti l’accusavano di molte cose; e Pilato daccapo lo interrogò dicendo: Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano! Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla; talché Pilato se ne maravigliava. Or ogni festa di pasqua ei liberava loro un carcerato, qualunque chiedessero. C’era allora in prigione un tale chiamato Barabba, insieme a de’ sediziosi, i quali, nella sedizione, avean commesso omicidio. E la moltitudine, venuta su, cominciò a domandare ch’e’ facesse come sempre avea lor fatto. E Pilato rispose loro: Volete ch’io vi liberi il Re de’ Giudei? Poiché capiva bene che i capi sacerdoti glielo aveano consegnato per invidia. Ma i capi sacerdoti incitarono la moltitudine a chiedere che piuttosto liberasse loro Barabba. E Pilato, daccapo replicando, diceva loro: Che volete dunque ch’io faccia di colui che voi chiamate il Re de’ Giudei? Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: Crocifiggilo! E Pilato diceva loro: Ma pure, che male ha egli fatto? Ma essi gridarono più forte che mai: Crocifiggilo! E Pilato, volendo soddisfare la moltitudine, liberò loro Barabba; e consegnò Gesù, dopo averlo flagellato, per esser crocifisso. Allora i soldati lo menarono dentro la corte che è il Pretorio, e radunarono tutta la coorte. E lo vestirono di porpora; e intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela misero intorno al capo, e cominciarono a salutarlo: Salve, Re de’ Giudei! E gli percotevano il capo con una canna, e gli sputavano addosso, e postisi inginocchioni, si prostravano dinanzi a lui. E dopo che l’ebbero schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora e lo rivestirono dei suoi propri vestimenti. E lo menaron fuori per crocifiggerlo. E costrinsero a portar la croce di lui un certo Simon cireneo, il padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, il quale passava di là, tornando dai campi. E menarono Gesù al luogo detto Golgota; il che, interpretato, vuol dire luogo del teschio. E gli offersero da bere del vino mescolato con mirra; ma non ne prese. Poi lo crocifissero e si spartirono i suoi vestimenti, tirandoli a sorte per sapere quel che ne toccherebbe a ciascuno. Era l’ora terza quando lo crocifissero. E l’iscrizione indicante il motivo della condanna, diceva: IL RE DE’ GIUDEI. E con lui crocifissero due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e l’altro alla sua sinistra. E si adempié la Scrittura che dice: Egli è stato annoverato fra gli iniqui. E quelli che passavano lì presso lo ingiuriavano, scotendo il capo e dicendo: Eh, tu che disfai il tempio e lo riedifichi in tre giorni, salva te stesso e scendi giù di croce! Parimente anche i capi sacerdoti con gli scribi, beffandosi, dicevano l’uno all’altro: Ha salvato altri e non può salvar se stesso! Il Cristo, il Re d’Israele, scenda ora giù di croce, affinché vediamo e crediamo! Anche quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui, lo insultavano. E venuta l’ora sesta, si fecero tenebre per tutto il paese, fino all’ora nona. Ed all’ora nona, Gesù gridò con gran voce: Eloì, Eloì, lamà sabactanì? il che, interpretato, vuol dire: Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato? E alcuni degli astanti, udito ciò, dicevano: Ecco, chiama Elia! E uno di loro corse, e inzuppata d’aceto una spugna, e postala in cima ad una canna, gli diè da bere dicendo: Aspettate, vediamo se Elia viene a trarlo giù. E Gesù, gettato un gran grido, rendé lo spirito. E la cortina del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo. E il centurione ch’era quivi presente dirimpetto a Gesù, avendolo veduto spirare a quel modo, disse: Veramente, quest’uomo era Figliuol di Dio! Or v’erano anche delle donne, che guardavan da lontano; fra le quali era Maria Maddalena e Maria madre di Giacomo il piccolo e di Iose, e Salome; le quali, quand’egli era in Galilea, lo seguivano e lo servivano; e molte altre, che eran salite con lui a Gerusalemme. Ed essendo già sera (poiché era Preparazione, cioè la vigilia del sabato), venne Giuseppe d’Arimatea, consigliere onorato, il quale aspettava anch’egli il Regno di Dio; e, preso ardire, si presentò a Pilato e domandò il corpo di Gesù. Pilato si maravigliò ch’egli fosse già morto; e chiamato a sé il centurione, gli domandò se era morto da molto tempo; e saputolo dal centurione, donò il corpo a Giuseppe. E questi, comprato un panno lino e tratto Gesù giù di croce, l’involse nel panno e lo pose in una tomba scavata nella roccia, e rotolò una pietra contro l’apertura del sepolcro. E Maria Maddalena e Maria madre di Iose stavano guardando dove veniva deposto.

And Judith began to sing this song of thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang with loud voices this song of praise. Judith said, “Begin a song to my God with timbrels. Sing to my Lord with cymbals. Make melody to him psalm and praise. Exalt him, and call upon his name. For the Lord is the God that crushes battles. For in his armies in the midst of the people, he delivered me out of the hand of those who persecuted me. Asshur came out of the mountains from the north. He came with ten thousands of his army. Its multitude stopped the torrents. Their horsemen covered the hills. He said that he would burn up my borders, kill my young men with the sword, throw my nursing children to the ground, give my infants up as prey, and make my virgins a plunder. “The Almighty Lord brought them to nothing by the hand of a woman. For their mighty one did not fall by young men, neither did sons of the Titans strike him. Tall giants didn’t attack him, but Judith the daughter of Merari made him weak with the beauty of her countenance. “For she put off the apparel of her widowhood for the exaltation of those who were distressed in Israel. She anointed her face with ointment, bound her hair in a tiara, and took a linen garment to deceive him. Her sandal ravished his eye. Her beauty took his soul prisoner. The scimitar passed through his neck. “The Persians quaked at her daring. The Medes were daunted at her boldness. “Then my lowly ones shouted aloud. My weak ones were terrified and trembled for fear. They lifted up their voice, and they fled. The sons of ladies pierced them through, and wounded them as fugatives’ children. They perished by the battle of my Lord. “I will sing to my God a new song: O Lord, you are great and glorious, marvelous in strength, invincible. Let all your creation serve you; for you spoke, and they were made. You sent out your spirit, and it built them. There is no one who can resist your voice. For the mountains will be moved from their foundations with the waters, and the rocks will melt as wax at your presence: But you are yet merciful to those who fear you. For all sacrifice is little for a sweet savor, And all the fat is very little for a whole burnt offering to you; But he who fears the Lord is great continually. “Woe to the nations who rise up against my race! The Lord Almighty will take vengeance on them in the day of judgement, to put fire and worms in their flesh; and they will weep and feel their pain forever.” Now when they came to Jerusalem, they worshipped God. When the people were purified, they offered their whole burnt offerings, their free will offerings, and their gifts. Judith dedicated all Holofernes’ stuff, which the people had given her, and gave the canopy, which she had taken for herself out of his bedchamber, for a gift to the Lord. And the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for three months, and Judith remained with them. But after these days, everyone departed to his own inheritance. Judith went away to Bethulia, and remained in her own possession, and was honorable in her time in all the land. Many desired her, and no man knew her all the days of her life, from the day that Manasses her husband died and was gathered to his people. She increased in greatness exceedingly; and she grew old in her husband’s house, to one hundred five years, and let her maid go free. Then she died in Bethulia. They buried her in the cave of her husband Manasses. The house of Israel mourned for her seven days. She distributed her goods before she died to all those who were nearest of kin to Manasses her husband, and to those who were nearest of her own kindred. There was no one that made the children of Israel afraid any more in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.

2 Corinzi 11

Oh quanto desidererei che voi sopportaste da parte mia un po’ di follia! Ma pure, sopportatemi! Poiché io son geloso di voi d’una gelosia di Dio, perché v’ho fidanzati ad un unico sposo, per presentarvi come una casta vergine a Cristo. Ma temo che come il serpente sedusse Eva con la sua astuzia, così le vostre menti siano corrotte e sviate dalla semplicità e dalla purità rispetto a Cristo. Infatti, se uno viene a predicarvi un altro Gesù, diverso da quello che abbiamo predicato noi, o se si tratta di ricevere uno Spirito diverso da quello che avete ricevuto, o un Vangelo diverso da quello che avete accettato, voi ben lo sopportate! Ora io stimo di non essere stato in nulla da meno di cotesti sommi apostoli. Che se pur sono rozzo nel parlare, tale non sono nella conoscenza; e l’abbiamo dimostrato fra voi, per ogni rispetto e in ogni cosa. Ho io commesso peccato quando, abbassando me stesso perché voi foste innalzati, v’ho annunziato l’evangelo di Dio gratuitamente? Ho spogliato altre chiese, prendendo da loro uno stipendio, per poter servir voi; e quando, durante il mio soggiorno fra voi, mi trovai nel bisogno, non fui d’aggravio a nessuno, perché i fratelli, venuti dalla Macedonia, supplirono al mio bisogno; e in ogni cosa mi sono astenuto e m’asterrò ancora dall’esservi d’aggravio. Com’è vero che la verità di Cristo è in me, questo vanto non mi sarà tolto nelle contrade dell’Acaia. Perché? Forse perché non v’amo? Lo sa Iddio. Ma quel che fo lo farò ancora per togliere ogni occasione a coloro che desiderano un’occasione; affinché in quello di cui si vantano siano trovati uguali a noi. Poiché cotesti tali sono dei falsi apostoli, degli operai fraudolenti, che si travestono da apostoli di Cristo. E non c’è da maravigliarsene, perché anche Satana si traveste da angelo di luce. Non è dunque gran che se anche i suoi ministri si travestono da ministri di giustizia; la fine loro sarà secondo le loro opere. Lo dico di nuovo: Nessuno mi prenda per pazzo; o se no, anche come pazzo accettatemi, onde anch’io possa gloriarmi un poco. Quello che dico, quando mi vanto con tanta fiducia, non lo dico secondo il Signore, ma come in pazzia. Dacché molti si gloriano secondo la carne, anch’io mi glorierò. Difatti, voi, che siete assennati, li sopportate volentieri i pazzi. Che se uno vi riduce in schiavitù, se uno vi divora, se uno vi prende il vostro, se uno s’innalza sopra voi, se uno vi percuote in faccia, voi lo sopportate. Lo dico a nostra vergogna, come se noi fossimo stati deboli; eppure, in qualunque cosa uno possa essere baldanzoso (parlo da pazzo), sono baldanzoso anch’io. Son dessi Ebrei? Lo sono anch’io. Son dessi Israeliti? Lo sono anch’io. Son dessi progenie d’Abramo? Lo sono anch’io. Son dessi ministri di Cristo? (Parlo come uno fuor di sé), io lo sono più di loro; più di loro per le fatiche, più di loro per le carcerazioni, assai più di loro per le battiture sofferte. Sono spesso stato in pericolo di morte. Dai Giudei cinque volte ho ricevuto quaranta colpi meno uno; tre volte sono stato battuto con le verghe; una volta sono stato lapidato; tre volte ho fatto naufragio; ho passato un giorno e una notte sull’abisso. Spesse volte in viaggio, in pericolo sui fiumi, in pericolo di ladroni, in pericoli per parte de’ miei connazionali, in pericoli per parte dei Gentili, in pericoli in città, in pericoli nei deserti, in pericoli sul mare, in pericoli tra falsi fratelli; in fatiche ed in pene; spesse volte in veglie, nella fame e nella sete, spesse volte nei digiuni, nel freddo e nella nudità. E per non parlar d’altro, c’è quel che m’assale tutti i giorni, l’ansietà per tutte le chiese. Chi è debole ch’io non sia debole? Chi è scandalizzato, che io non arda? Se bisogna gloriarsi, io mi glorierò delle cose che concernono la mia debolezza. L’Iddio e Padre del nostro Signor Gesù che è benedetto in eterno, sa ch’io non mento. A Damasco, il governatore del re Areta avea posto delle guardie alla città dei Damasceni per pigliarmi; e da una finestra fui calato, in una cesta, lungo il muro, e scampai dalle sue mani.
