He that keeps the law multiplies offerings; He that takes heed to the commandments sacrifices a peace offering. He that requites a good turn offers fine flour; And he that gives alms sacrifices a thank offering. To depart from wickedness is a thing pleasing to the Lord; And to depart from unrighteousness is an atoning sacrifice. See that you appear not in the presence of the Lord empty. For all these things are to be done because of the commandment. The offering of the righteous makes the altar fat; And the sweet savor thereof is before the Most High. The sacrifice of a righteous man is acceptable; And the memorial thereof shall not be forgotten. Glorify the Lord with a good eye, And stint not the first fruits of your hands. In every gift show a cheerful countenance, And dedicate your tithe with gladness. Give to the Most High according as he has given; And as your hand has found, give with a good eye. For the Lord recompenses, And he will recompense you sevenfold. Think not to corrupt with gifts; for he will not receive them: And set not your mind on an unrighteous sacrifice; For the Lord is judge, And with him is no respect of persons. He will not accept any person against a poor man; And he will listen to the prayer of him that is wronged. He will in no wise despise the supplication of the fatherless; Nor the widow, when she pours out her tale. Do not the tears of the widow run down her cheek? And is not her cry against him that has caused them to fall? He that serves God according to his good pleasure shall be accepted, And his supplication shall reach to the clouds. The prayer of the humble pierces the clouds; And till it come near, he will not be comforted; And he will not depart, till the Most High shall visit; And he shall judge righteously, and execute judgement. And the Lord will not be slack, neither will he be longsuffering toward them, Till he have crushed the loins of the unmerciful; And he shall repay vengeance to the heathen; Till he have taken away the multitude of the haughty, And broken in pieces the sceptres of the unrighteous; Till he have rendered to every man according to his doings, And to the works of men according to their plans; Till he have judged the cause of his people; And he shall make them to rejoice in his mercy. Mercy is seasonable in the time of his afflicting them, As clouds of rain in the time of drought.

Giovanni 3

Or v’era tra i Farisei un uomo, chiamato Nicodemo, un de’ capi de’ Giudei. Egli venne di notte a Gesù, e gli disse: Maestro, noi sappiamo che tu sei un dottore venuto da Dio; perché nessuno può fare questi miracoli che tu fai, se Dio non è con lui. Gesù gli rispose dicendo: In verità, in verità io ti dico che se uno non è nato di nuovo, non può vedere il regno di Dio. Nicodemo gli disse: Come può un uomo nascere quand’è vecchio? Può egli entrare una seconda volta nel seno di sua madre e nascere? Gesù rispose: In verità, in verità io ti dico che se uno non è nato d’acqua e di Spirito, non può entrare nel regno di Dio. Quel che è nato dalla carne, è carne; e quel che è nato dallo Spirito, è spirito. Non ti maravigliare se t’ho detto: Bisogna che nasciate di nuovo. Il vento soffia dove vuole, e tu ne odi il rumore, ma non sai né d’onde viene né dove va; così è di chiunque è nato dallo Spirito. Nicodemo replicò e gli disse: Come possono avvenir queste cose? Gesù gli rispose: Tu se’ il dottor d’Israele e non sai queste cose? In verità, in verità io ti dico che noi parliamo di quel che sappiamo, e testimoniamo di quel che abbiamo veduto; ma voi non ricevete la nostra testimonianza. Se vi ho parlato delle cose terrene e non credete, come crederete se vi parlerò delle cose celesti? E nessuno è salito in cielo, se non colui che è disceso dal cielo: il Figliuol dell’uomo che è nel cielo. E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che il Figliuol dell’uomo sia innalzato, affinché chiunque crede in lui abbia vita eterna. Poiché Iddio ha tanto amato il mondo, che ha dato il suo unigenito Figliuolo, affinché chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna. Infatti Iddio non ha mandato il suo Figliuolo nel mondo per giudicare il mondo, ma perché il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui. Chi crede in lui non è giudicato; chi non crede è già giudicato, perché non ha creduto nel nome dell’unigenito Figliuol di Dio. E il giudizio è questo: che la luce è venuta nel mondo, e gli uomini hanno amato le tenebre più che la luce, perché le loro opere erano malvage. Poiché chiunque fa cose malvage odia la luce e non viene alla luce, perché le sue opere non siano riprovate; ma chi mette in pratica la verità viene alla luce, affinché le opere sue siano manifestate, perché son fatte in Dio. Dopo queste cose, Gesù venne co’ suoi discepoli nelle campagne della Giudea; quivi si trattenne con loro, e battezzava. Or anche Giovanni stava battezzando a Enon, presso Salim, perché c’era là molt’acqua; e la gente veniva a farsi battezzare. Poiché Giovanni non era ancora stato messo in prigione. Nacque dunque una discussione fra i discepoli di Giovanni e un Giudeo intorno alla purificazione. E vennero a Giovanni e gli dissero: Maestro, colui che era con te di là dal Giordano, e al quale tu rendesti testimonianza, eccolo che battezza, e tutti vanno a lui. Giovanni rispose dicendo: L’uomo non può ricever cosa alcuna, se non gli è data dal cielo. Voi stessi mi siete testimoni che ho detto: Io non sono il Cristo; ma son mandato davanti a lui. Colui che ha la sposa è lo sposo; ma l’amico dello sposo, che è presente e l’ascolta, si rallegra grandemente alla voce dello sposo; questa allegrezza che è la mia è perciò completa. Bisogna che egli cresca, e che io diminuisca. Colui che vien dall’alto è sopra tutti; colui che vien dalla terra è della terra e parla com’essendo della terra; colui che vien dal cielo è sopra tutti. Egli rende testimonianza di quel che ha veduto e udito, ma nessuno riceve la sua testimonianza. Chi ha ricevuto la sua testimonianza ha confermato che Dio è verace. Poiché colui che Dio ha mandato, proferisce le parole di Dio; perché Dio non gli dà lo Spirito con misura. Il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e gli ha dato ogni cosa in mano. Chi crede nel Figliuolo ha vita eterna; ma chi rifiuta di credere al Figliuolo non vedrà la vita, ma l’ira di Dio resta sopra lui.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord the God of all, and behold; And send your fear upon all the nations: Lift up your hand against the strange nations; And let them see your mighty power. As you were sanctified in us before them, So be you magnified in them before us. And let them know you, as we also have known you, That there is no God but only you, O God. Show new signs, and work various wonders; Glorify your hand and your right arm. Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath; Take away the adversary, and destroy the enemy. Hasten the time, and remember the oath; And let them declare your mighty works. Let him that escapes be devoured by the rage of fire; And may those who harm your people find destruction. Crush the heads of the rulers of the enemies, That say, There is none but we. Gather all the tribes of Jacob together, And take them for your inheritance, as from the beginning. O Lord, have mercy upon the people that is called by your name, And upon Israel, whom you did liken to a firstborn. Have compassion upon the city of your sanctuary, Jerusalem, the place of your rest. Fill Sion; exalt your oracles, And fill your people with your glory. Give testimony to those that were your creatures in the beginning, And raise up the prophecies that have been in your name. Give reward to those who wait for you: And men shall put their trust in your prophets. Hearken, O Lord, to the prayer of your suppliants, According to the blessing of Aaron concerning your people; And all those who are on the earth shall know That you are the Lord, the eternal God. The belly will eat any meat; Yet is one meat better than another. The mouth tastes meats taken in hunting: So does an understanding heart false speeches. A froward heart will cause heaviness: And a man of experience will recompense him. A woman will receive any man; But one daughter is better than another. The beauty of a woman cheers the countenance; And a man desires nothing so much. If there is on her tongue mercy and meekness, Her husband is not like the sons of men. He that gets a wife enters upon a possession: A help meet for him, and a pillar of rest. Where no hedge is, the possession will be laid waste: And he that has no wife will mourn as he wandereth up and down. For who will trust a nimble robber, that skips from city to city? Even so who shall trust a man that has no nest, and lodges wherever he finds himself at nightfall?

Or, fratelli, circa la venuta del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo e il nostro adunamento con lui, vi preghiamo di non lasciarvi così presto travolgere la mente, né turbare sia da ispirazioni, sia da discorsi, sia da qualche epistola data come nostra, quasi che il giorno del Signore fosse imminente. Nessuno vi tragga in errore in alcuna maniera; poiché quel giorno non verrà se prima non sia venuta l’apostasia e non sia stato manifestato l’uomo del peccato, il figliuolo della perdizione, l’avversario, colui che s’innalza sopra tutto quello che è chiamato Dio od oggetto di culto; fino al punto da porsi a sedere nel tempio di Dio, mostrando se stesso e dicendo ch’egli è Dio. Non vi ricordate che quand’ero ancora presso di voi io vi dicevo queste cose? E ora voi sapete quel che lo ritiene ond’egli sia manifestato a suo tempo. Poiché il mistero dell’empietà è già all’opra: soltanto v’è chi ora lo ritiene e lo riterrà finché sia tolto di mezzo. E allora sarà manifestato l’empio, che il Signor Gesù distruggerà col soffio della sua bocca, e annienterà con l’apparizione della sua venuta. La venuta di quell’empio avrà luogo, per l’azione efficace di Satana, con ogni sorta di opere potenti, di segni e di prodigi bugiardi; e con ogni sorta d’inganno d’iniquità a danno di quelli che periscono perché non hanno aperto il cuore all’amor della verità per esser salvati. E perciò Iddio manda loro efficacia d’errore onde credano alla menzogna; affinché tutti quelli che non han creduto alla verità, ma si son compiaciuti nell’iniquità, siano giudicati. Ma noi siamo in obbligo di render del continuo grazie di voi a Dio, fratelli amati dal Signore, perché Iddio fin dal principio vi ha eletti a salvezza mediante la santificazione nello Spirito e la fede nella verità. A questo Egli vi ha pure chiamati per mezzo del nostro Evangelo, onde giungiate a ottenere la gloria del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo. Così dunque, fratelli, state saldi e ritenete gli insegnamenti che vi abbiam trasmessi sia con la parola, sia con una nostra epistola. Or lo stesso Signor nostro Gesù Cristo e Iddio nostro Padre che ci ha amati e ci ha dato per la sua grazia una consolazione eterna e una buona speranza, consoli i vostri cuori e vi confermi in ogni opera buona e in ogni buona parola.
