I will give thanks to you, O Lord, O King, And will praise you, O God my Saviour: I do give thanks to your name: For you were my protector and helper, And did deliver my body out of destruction, And out of the snare of a slanderous tongue, From lips that forge lies, And was my helper before those who stood by; And did deliver me, according to the abundance of your mercy, and greatness of your name, From the gnashings of teeth ready to devour, Out of the hand of such as sought my life, Out of the manifold afflictions which I had; From the choking of a fire on every side, And out of the midst of fire which I kindled not; Out of the depth of the belly of the grave, And from an unclean tongue, And from lying words, The slander of an unrighteous tongue to the king. My soul drew near even to death, And my life was near to the grave beneath. They compassed me on every side, And there was none to help me. I was looking for the succour of men, And it was not. And I remembered your mercy, O Lord, And your working which has been from everlasting, How you deliver those who wait for you, And save them out of the hand of the enemies. And I lifted up my supplication from the earth, And prayed for deliverance from death. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, That he would not forsake me in the days of affliction, In the time when there was no help against the proud. I will praise your name continually, And will sing praise with thanksgiving; And my supplication was heard: For you saved me from destruction, And delivered me from the evil time: Therefore will I give thanks and praise to you, And bless the name of the Lord. When I was yet young, Or ever I went abroad, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. Before the temple I asked for her, And I will seek her out even to the end. From her flower as from the ripening grape my heart delighted in her: My foot trod in uprightness, From my youth I tracked her out. I bowed down my ear a little, and received her, And found for myself much instruction. I profited in her: To him that gives me wisdom I will give glory. For I purposed to practice her, And I was zealous for that which is good; And I shall never be put to shame. My soul has wrestled in her, And in my doing I was exact: I spread forth my hands to the heaven above, And bewailed my ignorances of her. I set my soul aright to her, And in pureness I found her. I got me a heart joined with her from the beginning: Therefore shall I not be forsaken. My inward part also was troubled to seek her: Therefore I have gotten a good possession. The Lord gave me a tongue for my reward; And I will praise him therewith. Draw near to me, you⌃ unlearned, And lodge in the house of instruction. Say, wherefore are you⌃ lacking in these things, And your souls are very thirsty? I opened my mouth, and spoke, Get her for yourselves without money. Put your neck under the yoke, And let your soul receive instruction: She is hard at hand to find. Behold with your eyes, How that I laboured but a little, And found for myself much rest. Get you instruction with a great sum of silver, And gain much gold by her. May your soul rejoice in his mercy, And may you⌃ not be put to shame in praising him. Work your work before the time comes, And in his time he will give you your reward.

Giovanni 11

Or v’era un ammalato, un certo Lazzaro di Betania, del villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella. Maria era quella che unse il Signore d’olio odorifero e gli asciugò i piedi co’ suoi capelli; e Lazzaro, suo fratello, era malato. Le sorelle dunque mandarono a dire a Gesù: Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato. Gesù, udito ciò, disse: Questa malattia non è a morte, ma è per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo d’essa il Figliuol di Dio sia glorificato. Or Gesù amava Marta e sua sorella e Lazzaro. Come dunque ebbe udito ch’egli era malato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nel luogo dov’era; poi dopo, disse a’ discepoli: Torniamo in Giudea! I discepoli gli dissero: Maestro, i Giudei cercavano or ora di lapidarti, e tu vuoi tornar là? Gesù rispose: Non vi son dodici ore nel giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo; ma se uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui. Così parlò; e poi disse loro: Il nostro amico Lazzaro s’è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo. Perciò i discepoli gli dissero: Signore, s’egli dorme, sarà salvo. Or Gesù avea parlato della morte di lui; ma essi pensarono che avesse parlato del dormir del sonno. Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: Lazzaro è morto; e per voi mi rallegro di non essere stato là, affinché crediate; ma ora, andiamo a lui! Allora Toma, detto Didimo, disse ai suoi condiscepoli: Andiamo anche noi, per morire con lui! Gesù dunque, arrivato, trovò che Lazzaro era già da quattro giorni nel sepolcro. Or Betania non distava da Gerusalemme che circa quindici stadi; e molti Giudei eran venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle del loro fratello. Come dunque Marta ebbe udito che Gesù veniva, gli andò incontro; ma Maria stava seduta in casa. Marta dunque disse a Gesù: Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto; e anche adesso so che tutto quel che chiederai a Dio, Dio te lo darà. Gesù le disse: Tuo fratello risusciterà. Marta gli disse: Lo so che risusciterà, nella risurrezione, nell’ultimo giorno. Gesù le disse: Io son la resurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muoia, vivrà; e chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà mai. Credi tu questo? Ella gli disse: Sì, o Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuol di Dio che dovea venire nel mondo. E detto questo, se ne andò, e chiamò di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendole: il Maestro è qui, e ti chiama. Ed ella, udito questo, si alzò in fretta e venne a lui. Or Gesù non era ancora entrato nel villaggio, ma era sempre nel luogo dove Marta l’aveva incontrato. Quando dunque i Giudei ch’erano in casa con lei e la consolavano, videro che Maria s’era alzata in fretta ed era uscita, la seguirono, supponendo che si recasse al sepolcro a piangere. Appena Maria fu giunta dov’era Gesù e l’ebbe veduto, gli si gettò a’ piedi dicendogli: Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto. E quando Gesù la vide piangere, e vide i Giudei ch’eran venuti con lei piangere anch’essi, fremé nello spirito, si conturbò, e disse: Dove l’avete posto? Essi gli dissero: Signore, vieni a vedere! Gesù pianse. Onde i Giudei dicevano: Guarda come l’amava! Ma alcuni di loro dicevano: Non poteva, lui che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco, fare anche che questi non morisse? Gesù dunque, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro. Era una grotta, e una pietra era posta all’apertura. Gesù disse: Togliete via la pietra! Marta, la sorella del morto, gli disse: Signore, egli puzza già, perché siamo al quarto giorno. Gesù le disse: Non t’ho io detto che se credi, tu vedrai la gloria di Dio? Tolsero dunque la pietra. E Gesù, alzati gli occhi in alto, disse: Padre, ti ringrazio che m’hai esaudito. Io ben sapevo che tu m’esaudisci sempre; ma ho detto questo a motivo della folla che mi circonda, affinché credano che tu m’hai mandato. E detto questo, gridò con gran voce: Lazzaro vieni fuori! E il morto uscì, avendo i piedi e le mani legati da fasce, e il viso coperto d’uno sciugatoio. Gesù disse loro: Scioglietelo, e lasciatelo andare. Perciò molti dei Giudei che eran venuti da Maria e avean veduto le cose fatte da Gesù, credettero in lui. Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai Farisei e raccontaron loro quel che Gesù avea fatto. I capi sacerdoti quindi e i Farisei radunarono il Sinedrio e dicevano: Che facciamo? perché quest’uomo fa molti miracoli. Se lo lasciamo fare, tutti crederanno in lui; e i Romani verranno e ci distruggeranno e città e nazione. E un di loro, Caiàfa, che era sommo sacerdote di quell’anno, disse loro: Voi non capite nulla; e non riflettete come vi torni conto che un uomo solo muoia per il popolo, e non perisca tutta la nazione. Or egli non disse questo di suo; ma siccome era sommo sacerdote di quell’anno, profetò che Gesù dovea morire per la nazione; e non soltanto per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere in uno i figliuoli di Dio dispersi. Da quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire. Gesù quindi non andava più apertamente fra i Giudei, ma si ritirò di là nella contrada vicino al deserto, in una città detta Efraim; e quivi si trattenne co’ suoi discepoli. Or la Pasqua de’ Giudei era vicina; e molti di quella contrada salirono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi. Cercavan dunque Gesù; e stando nel tempio dicevano tra loro: Che ve ne pare? Che non abbia venire alla festa? Or i capi sacerdoti e i Farisei avean dato ordine che se alcuno sapesse dove egli era, ne facesse denunzia perché potessero pigliarlo.

These are the words of the book, which Baruch the son of Nerias, the son of Maaseas, the son of Sedekias, the son of Asadias, the son of Helkias, wrote in Babylon, in the fifth year, and in the seventh day of the month, what time as the Chaldeans took Jerusalem, and burned it with fire. And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book, and in the hearing of the mighty men, and of the kings’ sons, and in the hearing of the elders, and in the hearing of all the people, from the least to the greatest, even of all those who lived at Babylon by the river Sud. And they wept, and fasted, and prayed before the Lord; they made also a collection of money according to every man’s power: and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the high priest, the son of Helkias, the son of Salom, and to the priests, and to all the people which were found with him at Jerusalem, at the same time when he took the vessels of the house of the Lord, that had been carried out of the temple, to return them into the land of Judah, the tenth day of the month Sivan, namely, silver vessels, which Sedekias the son of Josias king of Judah had made, after that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias, and the princes, and the captives, and the mighty men, and the people of the land, from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon. And they said, Behold, we have sent you money; buy you therefore with the money burnt offerings, and sin offerings, and incense, and prepare an oblation, and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God; and pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and for the life of Baltasar his son, that their days may be as the days of heaven above the earth: and the Lord will give us strength, and lighten our eyes, and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and under the shadow of Baltasar his son, and we shall serve them many days, and find favor in their sight. Pray for us also to the Lord our God, for we have sinned against the Lord our God; and to this day the wrath of the Lord and his indignation is not turned from us. And you⌃ shall read this book which we have sent to you, to make confession in the house of the Lord, upon the day of the feast and on the days of the solemn assembly. And you⌃ shall say, To the Lord our God belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to our kings, and to our princes, and to our priests, and to our prophets, and to our fathers: for that we have sinned before the Lord, and disobeyed him, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he has set before us: since the day that the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to this present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, and we have dealt unadvisedly in not hearkening to his voice. Wherefore the plagues clave to us, and the curse, which the Lord commanded Moses his servant to pronounce in the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, to give us a land that flows with milk and honey, as at this day. Nevertheless we didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord our God, according to all the words of the prophets, whom he sent to us: but we walked every man in the imagination of his own wicked heart, to serve strange gods, and to do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord our God.

2 Timoteo 2

Tu dunque, figliuol mio, fortìficati nella grazia che è in Cristo Gesù, e le cose che hai udite da me in presenza di molti testimoni, affidale ad uomini fedeli, i quali siano capaci d’insegnarle anche ad altri. Sopporta anche tu le sofferenze, come un buon soldato di Cristo Gesù. Uno che va alla guerra non s’impaccia delle faccende della vita; e ciò, affin di piacere a colui che l’ha arruolato. Parimente se uno lotta come atleta non è coronato, se non ha lottato secondo le leggi. Il lavoratore che fatica dev’essere il primo ad aver la sua parte de’ frutti. Considera quello che dico, poiché il Signore ti darà intelligenza in ogni cosa. Ricordati di Gesù Cristo, risorto d’infra i morti, progenie di Davide, secondo il mio Vangelo; per il quale io soffro afflizione fino ad essere incatenato come un malfattore, ma la parola di Dio non è incatenata. Perciò io sopporto ogni cosa per amor degli eletti, affinché anch’essi conseguano la salvezza che è in Cristo Gesù con gloria eterna. Certa è questa parola: che se muoiamo con lui, con lui anche vivremo; se abbiam costanza nella prova, con lui altresì regneremo; se lo rinnegheremo, anch’egli ci rinnegherà; se siamo infedeli, egli rimane fedele, perché non può rinnegare se stesso. Ricorda loro queste cose, scongiurandoli nel cospetto di Dio che non faccian dispute di parole, che a nulla giovano e sovvertono chi le ascolta. Studiati di presentar te stesso approvato dinanzi a Dio: operaio che non abbia ad esser confuso, che tagli rettamente la parola della verità. Ma schiva le profane ciance, perché quelli che vi si danno progrediranno nella empietà e la loro parola andrà rodendo come fa la cancrena; fra i quali sono Imeneo e Fileto; uomini che si sono sviati dalla verità, dicendo che la resurrezione è già avvenuta, e sovvertono la fede di alcuni. Ma pure il solido fondamento di Dio rimane fermo, portando questo sigillo: "Il Signore conosce quelli che son suoi", e: "Ritraggasi dall’iniquità chiunque nomina il nome del Signore". Or in una gran casa non ci son soltanto dei vasi d’oro e d’argento, ma anche dei vasi di legno e di terra; e gli uni son destinati a un uso nobile e gli altri ad un uso ignobile. Se dunque uno si serba puro da quelle cose, sarà un vaso nobile, santificato, atto al servigio del padrone, preparato per ogni opera buona. Ma fuggi gli appetiti giovanili e procaccia giustizia, fede, amore, pace con quelli che di cuor puro invocano il Signore. Ma schiva le questioni stolte e scempie, sapendo che generano contese. Or il servitore del Signore non deve contendere, ma dev’essere mite inverso tutti, atto ad insegnare, paziente, correggendo con dolcezza quelli che contradicono, se mai avvenga che Dio conceda loro di ravvedersi per riconoscere la verità; in guisa che, tornati in sé, escano dal laccio del diavolo, che li avea presi prigionieri perché facessero la sua volontà.
