Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Asshur, was told that the children of Israel had prepared for war, had shut up the passages of the hill country, had fortified all the tops of the high hills, and had laid impediments in the plains. Then he was exceedingly angry, and he called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast, and he said to them, “Tell me now, you sons of Canaan, who are these people who dwell in the hill country? What are the cities that they inhabit? How large is their army? Where is their power and their strength? What king is set over them, to be the leader of their army? Why have they turned their backs, that they should not come and meet me, more than all that dwell in the west?” Then Achior, the leader of all the children of Ammon, said to him, “Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth concerning these people who dwell in this hill country, near to the place where you dwell. No lie will come out of the mouth of your servant. These people are descended from the Chaldeans. They sojourned before this in Mesopotamia, because they didn’t want to follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of the Chaldeans. They departed from the way of their parents, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew. Their parents cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days. Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Canaan. They lived there, and prospered with gold and silver, and with exceedingly much cattle. Then they went down into Egypt, for a famine covered all the land of Canaan. They sojourned there until they had grown up. They became a great multitude there, so that one could not count the population of their nation. Then the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtly with them, and brought them low, making them labor in brick, and made them slaves. They cried to their God, and he struck all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues; so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight. God dried up the Red sea before them, and brought them into the way of Sinai Kadesh-Barnea, and they cast out all that lived in the wilderness. They lived in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength everyone in Heshbon. Passing over Jordan, they possessed all the hill country. They cast out before them the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Shechemite, and all the Girgashites, and they lived in that country many days. And while they didn’t sin not before their God, they prospered, because God who hates iniquity was with them. But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many severe battles, and were led captives into a land that was not theirs. The temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by their adversaries. And now they have returned to their God, and have come up from the dispersion where they were dispersed, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate. And now, my lord and master, if there is any error in this people, and they sin against their God, we will consider what this thing is in which they stumble, and we will go up and overcome them. But if there is no lawlessness in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we will be a reproach before all the earth.” It came to pass, when Achior had finished speaking these words, all the people standing around the tent murmured. The great men of Holofernes, and all that lived by the sea side and in Moab, said that he should kill him. For, they said, “We will not be afraid of the children of Israel, bcause, behold, they are a people that has no power nor might to make the battle strong. Therefore now we will go up, and they will be a prey to be devoured by all your army, Lord Holofernes.”

Isus a plecat de acolo, şi a venit în ţinutul Iudeii, dincolo de Iordan. Gloatele s'au adunat din nou la El; şi, după obiceiul Său, a început iarăş să -i înveţe. Au venit la El Fariseii; şi, ca să -L ispitească, L-au întrebat dacă este îngăduit unui bărbat să-şi lase nevasta. Drept răspuns, El le -a zis: ,,Ce v'a poruncit Moise?`` ,,Moise``, au zis ei, ,,a dat voie ca bărbatul să scrie o carte de despărţire, şi s'o lase.`` Isus le -a zis: ,,Din pricina împietririi inimii voastre v'a scris Moise porunca aceasta. Dar dela începutul lumii, ,Dumnezeu i -a făcut parte bărbătească şi parte femeiască. De aceea va lăsa omul pe tatăl său şi pe mama sa, şi se va lipi de nevastă-sa. Şi cei doi vor fi un singur trup.` Aşa că nu mai sînt doi, ci sînt un singur trup. Deci, ce a împreunat Dumnezeu, omul să nu despartă.`` În casă, ucenicii L-au întrebat iarăş asupra celor de mai sus. El le -a zis: ,,Oricine îşi lasă nevasta, şi ia pe alta de nevastă, preacurveşte faţă de ea; şi dacă o nevastă îşi lasă bărbatul, şi ia pe altul de bărbat, preacurveşte.`` I-au adus nişte copilaşi, ca să Se atingă de ei. Dar ucenicii au certat pe ceice îi aduceau. Cînd a văzut Isus acest lucru, S'a mîniat, şi le -a zis: ,,Lăsaţi copilaşii să vină la Mine, şi nu -i opriţi; căci Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu este a celor ca ei. Adevărat vă spun că, oricine nu va primi Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu ca un copilaş, cu nici un chip nu va intra în ea!`` Apoi i -a luat în braţe, şi i -a binecuvîntat, punîndu-Şi mînile peste ei. Tocmai cînd era gata să pornească la drum, a alergat la El un om, care a îngenuncheat înaintea Lui, şi L -a întrebat: ,,Bunule Învăţător, ce să fac ca să moştenesc viaţa vecinică?`` ,,Pentruce Mă numeşti bun?`` i -a zis Isus. ,,Nimeni nu este bun decît Unul singur: Dumnezeu. Cunoşti poruncile: ,,Să nu preacurveşti; să nu ucizi; să nu furi; să nu faci o mărturisire mincinoasă; să nu înşeli; să cinsteşti pe tatăl tău şi pe mama ta.`` El I -a răspuns: ,,Învăţătorule, toate aceste lucruri le-am păzit cu grijă din tinereţea mea.`` Isus S'a uitat ţintă la el, l -a iubit, şi i -a zis: ,,Îţi lipseşte un lucru; du-te de vinde tot ce ai, dă la săraci, şi vei avea o comoară în cer. Apoi vino, ia-ţi crucea, şi urmează-Mă.`` Mîhnit de aceste cuvinte, omul acesta a plecat întristat de tot; căci avea multe avuţii. Isus S'a uitat împrejurul Lui, şi a zis ucenicilor Săi: ,,Cît de anevoie vor intra în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu ceice au avuţii!`` Ucenicii au rămas uimiţi de cuvintele Lui. Isus a luat din nou cuvîntul, şi le -a zis: ,,Fiilor, cît de anevoie este pentru ceice se încred în bogăţii, să intre în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu! Mai lesne este să treacă o cămilă prin urechea unui ac, decît să intre un om bogat în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu!`` Ucenicii au rămas şi mai uimiţi, şi au zis unii către alţii: ,,Cine poate atunci să fie mîntuit?`` Isus S'a uitat ţintă la ei, şi le -a zis: ,,Lucrul acesta este cu neputinţă la oameni, dar nu la Dumnezeu; pentrucă toate lucrurile sînt cu putinţă la Dumnezeu.`` Petru a început să -I zică: ,,Iată că noi am lăsat totul, şi Te-am urmat.`` Isus a răspuns: ,,Adevărat vă spun că nu este nimeni, care să fi lăsat casă, sau fraţi, sau surori, sau tată, sau mamă, sau nevastă, sau copii, sau holde, pentru Mine şi pentru Evanghelie, şi să nu primească acum, în veacul acesta, de o sută de ori mai mult: case, fraţi, surori, mame, copii şi holde, împreună cu prigoniri; iar în veacul viitor, viaţa vecinică. Mulţi din cei dintîi vor fi cei de pe urmă, şi mulţi din cei de pe urmă vor fi cei dintîi.`` Ei erau pe drum şi se suiau la Ierusalim; şi Isus mergea înaintea lor. Ucenicii erau turburaţi, şi mergeau îngroziţi după El. Isus a luat iarăş la El pe cei doisprezece şi a început să le vorbească despre lucrurile cari aveau să I se întîmple. ,,Iată``, a zis El, ,,ne suim la Ierusalim, şi Fiul omului va fi dat în mînile preoţilor celor mai de seamă şi cărturarilor. Ei Îl vor osîndi la moarte, şi -L vor da în mînile Neamurilor, cari îşi vor bate joc de El, Îl vor bate cu nuiele, Îl vor scuipa şi -L vor omorî; dar, după trei zile, va învia.`` Fiii lui Zebedei, Iacov şi Ioan, au venit la Isus şi I-au zis: ,,Învăţătorule, am vrea să ne faci ce-Ţi vom cere.`` El le -a zis: ,,Ce voiţi să vă fac?`` ,,Dă-ne,`` I-au zis ei, ,,să şedem unul la dreapta Ta şi altul la stînga Ta, cînd vei fi îmbrăcat în slava Ta.`` Isus le -a răspuns: ,,Nu ştiţi ce cereţi. Puteţi voi să beţi paharul, pe care am să -l beau Eu, sau să fiţi botezaţi cu botezul cu care am să fiu botezat Eu?`` ,,Putem,`` au zis ei. Şi Isus le -a răspuns: ,,Este adevărat că paharul pe care -l voi bea Eu, îl veţi bea, şi cu botezul cu care voi fi botezat Eu, veţi fi botezaţi; dar cinstea de a şedea la dreapta sau la stînga Mea, nu atîrnă de Mine s'o dau, ci ea este numai pentru aceia pentru cari a fost pregătită.`` Cei zece, cînd au auzit lucrul acesta, au început să se mînie pe Iacov şi pe Ioan. Isus i -a chemat la El, şi le -a zis: ,,Ştiţi că cei priviţi drept cîrmuitori ai neamurilor, domnesc peste ele, şi mai marii lor le poruncesc cu stăpînire. Dar între voi să nu fie aşa. Ci oricare va vrea să fie mare între voi, să fie slujitorul vostru; şi oricare va vrea să fie cel dintîi între voi, să fie robul tuturor. Căci Fiul omului n'a venit să I se slujească, ci El să slujească şi să-Şi dea viaţa răscumpărare pentru mulţi!`` Au ajuns la Ierihon. Şi pe cînd ieşea Isus din Ierihon cu ucenicii Săi şi cu o mare mulţime de oameni, fiul lui Timeu, Bartimeu, un cerşetor orb, şedea jos lîngă drum, şi cerea de milă. El a auzit că trece Isus din Nazaret, şi a început să strige: ,,Isuse, Fiul lui David, ai milă de mine!`` Mulţi îl certau să tacă; dar el şi mai tare striga: ,,Fiul lui David, ai milă de mine!`` Isus S'a oprit, şi a zis: ,,Chemaţi -l!`` Au chemat pe orb, şi i-au zis: ,,Îndrăzneşte, scoală-te, căci te cheamă.`` Orbul şi -a aruncat haina; a sărit, şi a venit la Isus. Isus a luat cuvîntul, şi i -a zis: ,,Ce vrei să-ţi fac?`` ,,Rabuni,`` I -a răspuns orbul, ,,să capăt vederea.`` Şi Isus i -a zis: ,,Du-te, credinţa ta te -a mîntuit.`` Îndată orbul şi -a căpătat vederea, şi a mers pe drum după Isus.

And when the disturbance of the men that were around the council had ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Asshur said to Achior and to all the children of Moab before all the people of the foreigners, “And who are you, Achior, and the hirelings of Ephraim, that you have prophesied among us as today, and have said that we should not make war with the race of Israel, because their God will defend them? And who is God but Nebuchadnezzar? He will send forth his might, and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them; but we his servants will strike them as one man. They will not sustain the might of our horses. For with them we will burn them up. Their mountains will be drunken with their blood. Their plains will be filled with their dead bodies. Their footsteps will not stand before us, but they will surely perish, says king Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he said, ‘The words that I have spoken will not be in vain.’ But you, Achior, hireling of Ammon, who have spoken these words in the day of your iniquity, will see my face no more from this day, until I am avenged of the race of those that came out of Egypt. And then the sword of my army, and the multitude of those who serve me, will pass through your sides, and you will fall among their slain when I return. Then my servants will bring you back into the hill country, and will set you in one of the cities of the ascents. You will not perish until you are destroyed with them. And if you hope in your heart that they will not be taken, don’t let your countenance fall. I have spoken it, and none of my words will fall to the ground. ” Then Holofernes commanded his servants who waited in his tent to take Achior, and bring him back to Bethulia, and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel. So his servants took him, and brought him out of the camp into the plain, and they moved from the midst of the plains into the hill country, and came to the springs that were under Bethulia. When the men of the city saw them on the top of the hill, they took up their weapons, and went out of the city against them to the top of the hill. Every man that used a sling kept them from coming up, and cast stones against them. They took cover under the hill, bound Achior, cast him down, left him at the foot of the hill, and went away to their lord. But the children of Israel descended from their city, and came to him, untied him, led him away into Bethulia, and presented him to the rulers of their city; which were in those days Ozias the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel. Then they called together all the elders of the city; and all their young men ran together, with their women, to the assembly. They set Achior in the midst of all their people. Then Ozias asked him what had happened. He answered and declared to them the words of the council of Holofernes, and all the words that he had spoken in the midst of the princes of the children of Asshur, and all the great words that Holofernes had spoken against the house of Israel. Then the people fell down and worshipped God, and cried, saying, “O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and pity the low estate of our race. Look upon the face of those who are sanctified to you this day.” They comforted Achior, and praised him exceedingly. Then Ozias took him out of the assembly into his house, and made a feast for the elders. They called on the God of Israel for help all that night.

Ca unii cari lucrăm împreună cu Dumnezeu, vă sfătuim să faceţi aşa ca să nu fi primit în zădar harul lui Dumnezeu. Căci El zice: ,,La vremea potrivită, te-am ascultat, în ziua mîntuirii, te-am ajutat. Iată că acum este vremea potrivită; iată că acum este ziua mîntuirii.`` Noi nu dăm nimănui nici un prilej de poticnire, pentruca slujba noastră să nu fie defăimată. Ci, în toate privinţele, arătăm că sîntem nişte vrednici slujitori ai lui Dumnezeu, prin multă răbdare, în necazuri, în nevoi, în strîmtorări, în bătăi, în temniţe, în răscoale, în osteneli, în vegheri, în posturi; prin curăţie, prin înţelepciune, prin îndelungă răbdare, prin bunătate, prin Duhul Sfînt, printr -o dragoste neprefăcută, prin cuvîntul adevărului, prin puterea lui Dumnezeu, prin armele de lovire şi de apărare, pe cari le dă neprihănirea; în slavă şi în ocară, în vorbire de rău şi în vorbire de bine. Sîntem priviţi ca nişte înşelători, măcar că spunem adevărul; ca nişte necunoscuţi, măcar că sîntem bine cunoscuţi; ca unii cari murim, şi iată că trăim; ca nişte pedepsiţi, măcarcă nu sîntem omorîţi; ca nişte întristaţi, şi totdeauna sîntem veseli; ca nişte săraci, şi totuş îmbogăţim pe mulţi; ca neavînd nimic, şi totuş stăpînind toate lucrurile. Am dat drumul gurii faţă de voi, Corintenilor! Ni s'a lărgit inima. Voi nu sînteţi la strîmtoare în noi; dar inima voastră s'a strîns pentru noi. Faceţi-ne şi voi la fel: vă vorbesc ca unor copii ai mei-lărgiţi-vă şi voi! Nu vă înjugaţi la un jug nepotrivit cu cei necredincioşi. Căci ce legătură este între neprihănire şi fărădelege? Sau cum poate sta împreună lumina cu întunerecul? Ce înţelegere poate fi între Hristos şi Belial? Sau ce legătură are cel credincios cu cel necredincios? Cum se împacă Templul lui Dumnezeu cu idolii? Căci noi sîntem Templul Dumnezeului celui viu, cum a zis Dumnezeu: ,,Eu voi locui şi voi umbla în mijlocul lor; Eu voi fi Dumnezeul lor, şi ei vor fi poporul Meu.`` Deaceea: ,,Ieşiţi din mijlocul lor, şi despărţiţi-vă de ei, zice Domnul; nu vă atingeţi de ce este necurat, şi vă voi primi. Eu vă voi fi Tată, şi voi Îmi veţi fi fii şi fiice, zice Domnul Cel Atotputernic.``
