But when the evening had come, his servants hurried to depart. Bagoas shut the tent outside, and dismissed those who waited from the presence of his lord. They went away to their beds; for they were all weary, because the feast had been long. But Judith was left alone in the tent, with Holofernes lying along upon his bed; for he was drunk with wine. Judith had said to her servant that she should stand outside her bedchamber, and wait for her to come out, as she did daily; for she said she would go out to her prayer. She spoke to Bagoas according to the same words. All went away from her presence, and none was left in the bedchamber, small or great. Judith, standing by his bed, said in her heart, O Lord God of all power, look in this hour upon the works of my hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem. For now is the time to help your inheritance, and to do the thing that I have purposed to the destruction of the enemies which have risen up against us. She came to the rail of the bed, which was at Holofernes’ head, and took down his scimitar from there. She drew near to the bed, took hold of the hair of his head, and said, “Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, this day.” She struck twice upon his neck with all her might, and took away his head from him, tumbled his body down from the bed, and took down the canopy from the pillars. After a little while she went out, and gave Holofernes’ head to her maid; and she put it in her bag of food. They both went out together to prayer, according to their custom. They passed through the camp, circled around that valley, and went up to the mountain of Bethulia, and came to its gates. Judith said afar off to the watchmen at the gates, “Open, open the gate, now. God is with us, even our God, to show his power yet in Israel, and his might against the enemy, as he has done even this day.” It came to pass, when the men of her city heard her voice, they made haste to go down to the gate of their city, and they called together the elders of the city. They all ran together, both small and great, for it was strange to them that she had come. They opened the gate and received them, making a fire to give light, and surrounded them. She said to them with a loud voice, “Praise God! Praise him! Praise God, who has not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel, but has destroyed our enemies by my hand tonight!” Then she took the head out of the bag and showed it, and said to them, “Behold, the head of Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Asshur, and behold, the canopy, in which he laid in his drunkenness. The Lord struck him by the hand of a woman. And as the Lord lives, who preserved me in my way that I went, my countenance deceived him to his destruction, and he did not commit sin with me, to defile and shame me.” All the people were exceedingly amazed, and bowed themselves, and worshipped God, and said with one accord, “Blessed are you, O our God, which have this day brought to nothing the enemies of your people.” Ozias said to her, “Blessed are you, daughter, in the sight of the Most High God, above all the women upon the earth; and blessed is the Lord God, who created the heavens and the earth, who directed you to cut off the head of the prince of our enemies. For your hope will not depart from the heart of men that remember the strength of God forever. May God turn these things to you for a perpetual praise, to visit you with good things, because you did not spare your life by reason of the affliction of our race, but avenged our fall, walking a straight way before our God.” And all the people said, “Amen! Amen!”

După două zile era praznicul Paştelor şi al Azimilor. Preoţii cei mai de seamă şi cărturarii căutau cum să prindă pe Isus cu vicleşug, şi să -L omoare. Căci ziceau: ,,Nu în timpul praznicului, ca nu cumva să se facă turburare în norod.`` Pe cînd şedea Isus la masă, în Betania, în casa lui Simon leprosul, a venit o femeie, care avea un vas de alabastru cu mir de nard curat, foarte scump; şi, dupăce a spart vasul, a turnat mirul pe capul lui Isus. Unora dintre ei le -a fost necaz, şi ziceau: ,,Ce rost are risipa aceasta de mir? Mirul acesta s'ar fi putut vinde cu mai mult de trei sute de lei (Greceşte: dinari.), şi să se dea săracilor.`` Şi le era foarte necaz pe femeia aceea. Dar Isus le -a zis: ,,Lăsaţi -o în pace; de ce -i faceţi supărare? Ea a făcut un lucru frumos faţă de Mine; căci pe săraci îi aveţi totdeauna cu voi, şi le puteţi face bine oricînd voiţi: dar pe Mine nu Mă aveţi totdeauna. Ea a făcut ce a putut; Mi -a uns trupul mai dinainte, pentru îngropare. Adevărat vă spun că, oriunde va fi propovăduită Evanghelia aceasta, în toată lumea, se va istorisi şi ce a făcut femeia aceasta, spre pomenirea ei.`` Iuda Iscarioteanul, unul din cei doisprezece, s'a dus la preoţii cei mai de seamă, ca să le vîndă pe Isus. Cînd au auzit ei lucrul acesta, s'au bucurat, şi i-au făgăduit bani. Şi Iuda căuta un prilej nimerit, ca să -L dea în mînile lor. În ziua dintîi a praznicului Azimilor, cînd jertfeau Paştele, ucenicii lui Isus I-au zis: El a trimes pe doi din ucenicii Săi, şi le -a zis: ,,Duceţi-vă în cetate; acolo aveţi să întîlniţi un om ducînd un ulcior cu apă: mergeţi după el. Unde va intra el, spuneţi stăpînului casei: ,,Învăţătorul zice: ,Unde este odaia pentru oaspeţi, în care să mănînc Paştele cu ucenicii Mei?` Şi are să vă arate o odaie mare de sus, aşternută gata: acolo să pregătiţi pentru noi.`` Ucenicii au plecat, au ajuns în cetate, şi au găsit aşa cum le spusese El; şi au pregătit Paştele. Seara, Isus a venit cu cei doisprezece. Pe cînd şedeau la masă şi mîncau, Isus a zis: ,,Adevărat vă spun că unul din voi, care mănîncă cu Mine, Mă va vinde.`` Ei au început să se întristeze, şi să -I zică unul după altul: ,,Nu cumva sînt eu?`` ,,Este unul din cei doisprezece,`` le -a răspuns El; ,,şi anume, cel ce întinge mîna cu Mine în blid. Fiul omului, negreşit, Se duce după cum este scris despre El. Dar vai de omul acela, prin care este vîndut Fiul omului! Mai bine ar fi fost pentru el, să nu se fi născut.`` Pe cînd mîncau, Isus a luat o pîne; şi, după ce a binecuvîntat, a frînt -o, şi le -a dat, zicînd: ,,Luaţi, mîncaţi, acesta este trupul Meu.`` Apoi a luat un pahar, şi, dupăce a mulţămit lui Dumnezeu, li l -a dat, şi au băut toţi din el. Şi le -a zis: ,,Acesta este sîngele Meu, sîngele legămîntului celui nou, care se varsă pentru mulţi. Adevărat vă spun că, de acum încolo, nu voi mai bea din rodul viţei, pînă în ziua cînd îl voi bea nou în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu.`` Dupăce au cîntat cîntările de laudă, au ieşit în muntele Măslinilor. Isus le -a zis: ,,În noaptea aceasta toţi veţi avea un prilej de poticnire; pentrucă este scris: ,Voi bate Păstorul, şi oile vor fi risipite.` Dar, după ce voi învia, voi merge înaintea voastră în Galilea.`` Petru i -a zis: ,,Chiar dacă toţi ar avea un prilej de poticnire, eu nu voi avea.`` Şi Isus i -a zis: ,,Adevărat îţi spun că astăzi, chiar în noaptea aceasta, înainte ca să cînte cocoşul de două ori, te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori.`` Dar Petru I -a zis cu şi mai multă tărie: ,,Chiar dacă ar trebui să mor împreună cu Tine, tot nu mă voi lepăda de Tine.`` Şi toţi ceilalţi au spus acelaş lucru. S'au dus apoi într'un loc îngrădit, numit Ghetsimani. Şi Isus a zis ucenicilor Săi: ,,Şedeţi aici pînă Mă voi ruga.`` A luat cu El pe Petru, pe Iacov şi pe Ioan, şi a început să Se spăimînte şi să Se mîhnească foarte tare. El le -a zis: ,,Sufletul Meu este cuprins de o întristare de moarte; rămîneţi aici, şi vegheaţi!`` Apoi a mers puţin mai înainte, S'a aruncat la pămînt, şi Se ruga ca, dacă este cu putinţă, să treacă de la El ceasul acela. El zicea: ,,Ava, adică: Tată, -Ţie toate lucrurile Îţi sînt cu putinţă; depărtează de la Mine paharul acesta! Totuş, facă-se nu ce voiesc Eu, ci ce voieşti Tu.`` Şi a venit la ucenici, pe cari i -a găsit dormind. Şi a zis lui Petru: ,,Simone, tu dormi? Un ceas n'ai fost în stare să veghezi? Vegheaţi şi rugaţi-vă, ca să nu cădeţi în ispită; duhul este plin de rîvnă, dar trupul este neputincios.`` S'a dus iarăş, şi S'a rugat, zicînd aceleaşi cuvinte. Apoi S'a întors din nou şi i -a găsit dormind; pentrucă li se îngreuiaseră ochii de somn. Ei nu ştiau ce să -I răspundă. În sfîrşit, a venit a treia oară, şi le -a zis: ,,Dormiţi de acum, şi odihniţi-vă! Destul! A venit ceasul! Iată că Fiul omului este dat în mînile păcătoşilor. Sculaţi-vă; haidem să mergem; iată că se apropie vînzătorul!`` Şi îndată, pe cînd vorbea El încă, a venit Iuda, unul din cei doisprezece, şi împreună cu el a venit o mulţime de oameni cu săbii şi cu ciomege, trimeşi de preoţii cei mai de seamă, de cărturari şi de bătrîni. Vînzătorul le dăduse semnul acesta: ,,Pe care -L voi săruta, acela este; să -L prindeţi şi să -L duceţi supt pază.`` Cînd a venit Iuda, s'a apropiat îndată de Isus, şi I -a zis: ,,Învăţătorule!`` Şi L -a sărutat mult. Atunci oamenii aceia au pus mîna pe Isus, şi L-au prins. Unul din cei ce stăteau lîngă El, a scos sabia, a lovit pe robul marelui preot, şi i -a tăiat urechea. Isus a luat cuvîntul, şi le -a zis: ,,Aţi ieşit ca după un tîlhar, cu săbii şi cu ciomege, ca să Mă prindeţi. În toate zilele am fost la voi, şi învăţam pe oameni în Templu, şi nu M'aţi prins. Dar toate aceste lucruri s'au întîmplat ca să se împlinească Scripturile.`` Atunci toţi ucenicii L-au părăsit şi au fugit. După El mergea un tînăr, care n'avea pe trup decît o învelitoare de pînză de in. Au pus mîna pe el; dar el şi -a lăsat învelitoarea, şi a fugit în pielea goală. Pe Isus L-au dus la marele preot, unde s'au adunat toţi preoţii cei mai de seamă, bătrînii şi cărturarii. Petru L -a urmat de departe pînă în curtea marelui preot; a şezut jos împreună cu aprozii, şi se încălzea la para focului. Preoţii cei mai de seamă şi tot soborul căutau vreo mărturie împotriva lui Isus, ca să -L omoare; dar nu găseau nici una. Pentrucă mulţi făceau mărturisiri mincinoase împotriva Lui, dar mărturisirile lor nu se potriveau. Unii s'au sculat şi au făcut o mărturisire mincinoasă împotriva Lui, şi au zis: ,,Noi L-am auzit zicînd: ,Eu voi strica Templul acesta, făcut de mîni omeneşti, şi în trei zile voi ridica un altul, care nu va fi făcut de mîni omeneşti.`` Nici chiar în privinţa aceasta nu se potrivea mărturisirea lor. Atunci marele preot s'a sculat în picioare în mijlocul adunării, a întrebat pe Isus, şi I -a zis: ,,Nu răspunzi nimic? Ce mărturisesc oamenii aceştia împotriva Ta?`` Isus tăcea, şi nu răspundea nimic. Marele preot L -a întrebat iarăş, şi I -a zis: ,,Eşti Tu, Hristosul, Fiul Celui binecuvîntat?`` ,,Da, sînt,`` i -a răspuns Isus. ,,Şi veţi vedea pe Fiul omului şezînd la dreapta puterii şi venind pe norii cerului.`` Atunci marele preot şi -a rupt hainele, şi a zis: ,,Ce nevoie mai avem de martori? Aţi auzit hula. Ce vi se pare?`` Toţi L-au osîndit să fie pedepsit cu moartea. Şi unii au început să -L scuipe, să -I acopere faţa, să -L bată cu pumnii, şi să -I zică: ,,Prooroceşte!`` Iar aprozii L-au primit în palme. Pe cînd stătea Petru jos în curte, a venit una din slujnicele marelui preot. Cînd a văzut pe Petru încălzindu-se, s'a uitat ţintă la el, şi i -a zis: ,,Şi tu erai cu Isus din Nazaret!`` El s'a lepădat, şi a zis: ,,Nu ştiu, nici nu înţeleg ce vrei să zici.`` Apoi a ieşit în pridvor. Şi a cîntat cocoşul. Cînd l -a văzut slujnica, a început iarăş să spună celor ce stăteau acolo: ,,Acesta este unul dintre oamenii aceia.`` Şi el s'a lepădat din nou. După puţină vreme, ceice stăteau acolo, au zis iarăş lui Petru: ,,Nu mai încape îndoială că eşti unul din oamenii aceia; căci eşti Galilean, şi graiul tău seamănă cu al lor.`` Atunci el a început să se blesteme şi să se jure: ,,Nu cunosc pe omul acesta, despre care vorbiţi!`` Îndată a cîntat cocoşul a doua oară. Şi Petru şi -a adus aminte de vorba, pe care i -o spusese Isus: ,,Înainte ca să cînte cocoşul de două ori, te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori.`` Şi gîndindu-se la acest lucru, a început să plîngă.

Judith said to them, “Hear me now, my kindred, and take this head, and hang it upon the battlement of your wall. It will be, so soon as the morning appears, and the sun comes up on the earth, you shall each take up his weapons of war, and every valiant man of you go out of the city. You shall set a captain over them, as though you would go down to the plain toward the watch of the children of Asshur; but you men shall not go down. These shall take up their full armor, and shall go into their camp and rouse up the captains of the army of Asshur. They will run together to Holofernes’ tent. They won’t find him. Fear will fall upon them, and they will flee before your face. You men, and all that inhabit every coast of Israel, shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go. But before you do these things, summon Achior the Ammonite to me, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us, as it were to death. And they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; but when he came, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man’s hand in the assembly of the people, he fell upon his face, and his spirit failed. But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith’s feet, and bowed down to her, and said, “Blessed are you in every tent of Judah, and in every nation, which hearing your name will be troubled. Now tell me all the things that you have done in these days.” And Judith declared to him in the midst of the people all the things that she had done, from the day that she went out until the time that she spoke to them. But when she finished speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city. But when Achior saw all the things that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God exceedingly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the house of Israel, to this day. But as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took up his weapons, and they went forth by bands to the ascents of the mountain. But when the children of Asshur saw them, they sent word to their leaders; but they went to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers. They came to Holofernes’ tent, and said to him that was over all that he had, “Wake our lord up, now; for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.” Bagoas went in, and knocked at the outer door of the tent; for he supposed that he was sleeping with Judith. But when no one listened to him, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the threshold dead, and his head had been taken from him. He cried with a loud voice, with weeping and groaning and a mighty cry, and tore his garments. He entered into the tent where Judith lodged, and he didn’t find her. He leaped out to the people, and cried aloud, “The slaves have dealt treacherously! One woman of the Hebrews has brought shame upon the house of king Nebuchadnezzar; for, behold, Holofernes lies upon the ground, and his head is not on him!” But when the rulers of the army of Asshur heard the words, they tore their coats, and their soul was troubled exceedingly. There was a cry and an exceedingly great noise in the midst of the camp.

Eu, Pavel, vă rog, prin blîndeţa şi bunătatea lui Hristos, -eu, cel ,,smerit cînd sînt de faţă în mijlocul vostru, şi plin de îndrăzneală împotriva voastră, cînd sînt departe``, -vă rog, dar, să nu mă faceţi ca, atunci cînd voi fi de faţă, să alerg cu hotărîre la îndrăzneala aceea, pe care am de gînd s'o întrebuinţez împotriva unora, cari îşi închipuiesc că noi sîntem mînaţi de firea pămîntească. Măcar că trăim în firea pămîntească, totuş nu ne luptăm călăuziţi de firea pămîntească. Căci armele cu cari ne luptăm noi, nu sînt supuse firii pămînteşti, ci sînt puternice, întărite de Dumnezeu ca să surpe întăriturile. Noi răsturnăm izvodirile minţii şi orice înălţime, cari se ridică împotriva cunoştinţei lui Dumnezeu; şi orice gînd îl facem rob ascultării de Hristos. Îndată ce se va săvîrşi ascultarea aceasta din partea voastră, sîntem gata să pedepsim orice neascultare. La înfăţişare vă uitaţi? Dacă cineva crede că ,,este al lui Hristos``, să aibă în vedere că, după cum el este al lui Hristos, tot aşa sîntem şi noi. Şi chiar dacă m'aş lăuda ceva mai mult cu stăpînirea, pe care mi -a dat -o Domnul pentru zidirea voastră, iar nu pentru dărîmarea voastră, tot nu mi-ar fi ruşine. Zic aşa, ca să nu se pară că vreau să vă înfricoşez prin epistolele mele. ,,De fapt``, zic ei, ,,epistolele lui sînt cu greutate şi pline de putere; dar cînd este de faţă el însuş, este moale, şi cuvîntul lui n'are nici o greutate.`` Cine judecă aşa, să fie încredinţat că, aşa cum sîntem în vorbă, în epistolele noastre, cînd nu sîntem de faţă, tot aşa vom fi şi în faptă, cînd vom fi de faţă! Negreşit, n'avem îndrăzneala să ne punem alături sau în rîndul unora din aceia cari se laudă singuri. Dar ei, prin faptul că se măsoară cu ei înşişi şi se pun alături ei cu ei înşişi, sînt fără pricepere. Noi, însă, nu ne lăudăm dincolo de măsura noastră, ci în măsura marginilor, pe cari le -a însemnat Dumnezeu cîmpului nostru ca să ajungem pînă la voi. Nu ne întindem prea mult, ca şi cînd n'am fi ajuns pînă la voi, căci, în adevăr, pînă la voi am ajuns în Evanghelia lui Hristos. Nu ne lăudăm peste măsura noastră, adică, nu ne lăudăm cu ostenelile altuia; ci avem nădejdea că, dacă credinţa voastră creşte, va creşte şi cîmpul nostru de lucru între voi, nespus de mult, după măsura noastră. Aşa că vom putea propovădui Evanghelia şi în ţinuturile cari sînt dincolo de al vostru, fără să intrăm în cîmpul de lucru al altuia, ca să ne lăudăm cu lucrări făcute deagata. Ci, ,,oricine se laudă, să se laude în Domnul.`` Pentrucă nu cine se laudă singur, va fi primit, ci acela pe care Domnul îl laudă.
