Better than this is childishness with virtue; For in the memory of virtue is immortality: Because it is recognized both before God and before men. When it is present, men imitate it; And they long after it when it is departed: And throughout all time it marcheth crowned in triumph, Victorious in the strife for the prizes that are undefiled. But the multiplying brood of the ungodly will be of no profit, And with bastard slips they will not strike deep root, Nor will they establish a sure hold. For even if these put forth boughs and flourish for a season, q1 Yet, standing unsure, they will be shaken by the wind, And by the violence of winds they will be rooted out. Their branches will be broken off before they come to maturity, and their fruit will be useless, Never ripe to eat, and fit for nothing. For children unlawfully begotten are witnesses of wickedness Against parents when God searcheth them out. But a righteous man, though he die before his time, will be at rest. (For honorable old age is not that which stands in length of time, Nor is its measure given by number of years: But understanding is gray hairs to men, And an unspotted life is ripe old age.) Being found well-pleasing to God he was beloved of him, And while living among sinners he was translated: He was caught away, lest wickedness should change his understanding, Or guile deceive his soul. (For the bewitching of naughtiness bedimmeth the things which are good, And the giddy whirl of desire perverteth an innocent mind.) Being made perfect in a little while, he fulfilled long years; For his soul was pleasing to the Lord: Therefore hurried he out of the midst of wickedness. But as for the peoples, seeing and understanding not, Neither laying this to heart, That grace and mercy are with his chosen, And that he visiteth his holy ones:— But a righteous man that is dead will condemn the ungodly that are living, And youth that is quickly perfected the many years of an unrighteous man’s old age; For the ungodly will see a wise man’s end, And will not understand what the Lord purposed concerning him, And for what he safely kept him:— They will see, and they will despise; But them the Lord will laugh to scorn. And after this they will become a dishonored carcase, And a reproach among the dead forever: Because he will dash them speechless to the ground, And will shake them from the foundations, And they will lie utterly waste, and they will be in anguish, And their memory will perish. They will come, when their sins are reckoned up, with coward fear; And their lawless deeds will convict them to their face.

Luca 1:39-80

Maria s'a sculat chiar în zilele acelea, şi a plecat în grabă spre munţi, într'o cetate a lui Iuda. A intrat în casa lui Zaharia, şi a urat de bine Elisavetei. Cum a auzit Elisaveta urarea Mariei, i -a săltat pruncul în pîntece, şi Elisaveta s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt. Ea a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Binecuvîntată eşti tu între femei, şi binecuvîntat este rodul pîntecelui tău. Cum mi -a fost dat mie să vină la mine maica Domnului meu? Fiindcă iată, cum mi -a ajuns la urechi glasul urării tale, mi -a săltat pruncul în pîntece de bucurie. Ferice de aceea care a crezut; pentrucă lucrurile, cari i-au fost spuse din partea Domnului, se vor împlini.`` Şi Maria a zis: ,,Sufletul meu măreşte pe Domnul, şi mi se bucură duhul în Dumnezeu, Mîntuitorul meu, pentrucă a privit spre starea smerită a roabei Sale. Căci iată că deacum încolo, toate neamurile îmi vor zice fericită, pentrucă Cel Atot Puternic a făcut lucruri mari pentru mine. Numele Lui este sfînt, şi îndurarea Lui se întinde din neam în neam peste cei ce se tem de El. El a arătat putere cu braţul Lui; a risipit gîndurile, pe cari le aveau cei mîndri în inima lor. A răsturnat pe cei puternici de pe scaunele lor de domnie, şi a înălţat pe cei smeriţi. Pe cei flămînzi i -a săturat de bunătăţi, şi pe cei bogaţi i -a scos afară cu mînile goale. A venit în ajutorul robului său Israel, căci Şi -a adus aminte de îndurarea Sa, - cum făgăduise părinţilor noştri, -faţă de Avraam şi sămînţa lui în veac.`` Maria a rămas împreună cu Elisaveta cam trei luni. Apoi s'a întors acasă. Elisavetei i s'a împlinit vremea să nască; şi a născut un fiu. Vecinii şi rudele ei au auzit că Domnul a arătat mare îndurare faţă de ea, şi se bucurau împreună cu ea. În ziua a opta, au venit să taie pruncul împrejur, şi voiau să -i pună numele Zaharia, după numele tatălui său. Dar mama lui a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis: ,,Nu. Ci are să se cheme Ioan.`` Ei i-au zis: ,,Nimeni din rubedeniile tale nu poartă numele acesta.`` Şi au început să facă semne tatălui său, ca să ştie cum ar vrea să -i pună numele. Zaharia a cerut o tăbliţă de scris, şi a scris, zicînd: ,,Numele lui este Ioan.`` Şi toţi s'au minunat. În clipa aceea, i s'a deschis gura, i s'a deslegat limba, şi el vorbea şi binecuvînta pe Dumnezeu. Pe toţi vecinii i -a apucat frica, şi în tot ţinutul acela muntos al Iudeii, se vorbea despre toate aceste lucruri. Toţi ceice le auzeau, le păstrau în inima lor, şi ziceau: ,,Oare ce va fi pruncul acesta?`` Şi mîna Domnului era într'adevăr cu el. Zaharia, tatăl lui, s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt, a proorocit, şi a zis: ,,Binecuvîntat este Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, pentrucă a cercetat şi a răscumpărat pe poporul Său. Şi ne -a ridicat o mîntuire puternică (Greceşte: un corn de mîntuire.) în casa robului Său David, cum vestise prin gura sfinţilor Săi prooroci, cari au fost din vechime; - mîntuire de vrăjmaşii noştri şi din mîna tuturor celor ce ne urăsc! Astfel Îşi arată El îndurarea faţă de părinţii noştri, şi Îşi aduce aminte de legămîntul Lui cel sfînt, potrivit jurămîntului prin care Se jurase părintelui nostru Avraam, că, dupăce ne va izbăvi din mîna vrăjmaşilor noştri, ne va îngădui să -I slujim fără frică, trăind înaintea Lui în sfinţenie şi neprihănire, în toate zilele vieţii noastre. Şi tu, pruncule, vei fi chemat prooroc al Celui Prea Înalt. Căci vei merge înaintea Domnului, ca să pregăteşti căile Lui, şi să dai poporului Său cunoştinţa mîntuirii, care stă în iertarea păcatelor lui; - datorită marei îndurări a Dumnezeului nostru, în urma căreia ne -a cercetat Soarele care răsare din înălţime, ca să lumineze pe ceice zac în întunerecul şi în umbra morţii, şi să ne îndrepte picioarele pe calea păcii!`` Iar pruncul creştea şi se întărea în duh. Şi a stat în locuri pustii pînă în ziua arătării lui înaintea lui Israel.

Then shall the righteous man stand in great boldness Before the face of those who afflicted him, And those who make his labors of no account. When they see it, they will be troubled with terrible fear, And will be amazed at the marvel of God’s salvation. They will say within themselves repenting, And for distress of spirit will they groan, This was he whom aforetime we had in derision, And made a parable of reproach: We fools accounted his life madness, And his end without honor: How was he counted among sons of God? And how is his lot among saints? Verily we went astray from the way of truth, And the light of righteousness shined not for us, And the sun rose not for us. We took our fill of the paths of lawlessness and destruction, And we journeyed through trackless deserts, But the way of the Lord we knew not. What did our arrogancy profit us? And what good have riches and vaunting brought us? Those things all passed away as a shadow, And as a message that runs by: As a ship passing through the billowy water, Whereof, when it is gone by, there is no trace to be found, Neither pathway of its keel in the billows: Or as when a bird flieth through the air, No token of her passage is found, But the light wind, lashed with the stroke of her pinions, And tore asunder with the violent rush of the moving wings, is passed through, And afterwards no sign of her coming is found therein: Or as when an arrow is shot at a mark, The air disparted closeth up again immediately, So that men know not where it passed through: So we also, as soon as we were born, ceased to be; And of virtue we had no sign to show, But in our wickedness we were utterly consumed. Because the hope of the ungodly man is as chaff carried by the wind, And as foam vanishing before a tempest; And is scattered as smoke is scattered by the wind, And passes by as the remembrance of a guest that waits but a day. But the righteous live forever, And in the Lord is their reward, And the care for them with the Most High. Therefore will they receive the crown of royal dignity And the diadem of beauty from the Lord’s hand; Because with his right hand will he cover them, And with his arm will he shield them. He will take his jealousy as complete armor, And will make the whole creation his weapons for vengeance on his enemies: He will put on righteousness as a breastplate, And will array himself with judgement unfeigned as with a helmet; He will take holiness as an invincible shield, And he will sharpen stern wrath for a sword: And the world will go forth with him to fight against his insensate foes. Shafts of lightning will fly with true aim, And from the clouds, as from a well drawn bow, will they leap to the mark. And as from an engine of war will be hurled hailstones full of wrath; The water of the sea will be angered against them, And rivers will sternly overwhelm them; A mighty blast will encounter them, And as a tempest will it winnow them away: And so will lawlessness make all the land desolate, And their evil-doing will overturn the thrones of princes.

Galateni 1

Pavel, apostol nu dela oameni, nici printr'un om, ci prin Isus Hristos, şi prin Dumnezeu Tatăl, care L -a înviat din morţi, şi toţi fraţii cari sînt împreună cu mine, către Bisericile Galatiei: Har şi pace vouă dela Dumnezeu Tatăl, şi dela Domnul nostru Isus Hristos! El S'a dat pe Sine însuş pentru păcatele noastre, ca să ne smulgă din acest veac rău, după voia Dumnezeului nostru şi Tatăl. A Lui să fie slava în vecii vecilor! Amin. Mă mir că treceţi aşa de repede dela Cel ce v'a chemat prin harul lui Hristos, la o altă Evanghelie. Nu doar că este o altă Evanghelie; dar sînt unii oameni cari vă tulbură, şi voiesc să răstoarne Evanghelia lui Hristos. Dar chiar dacă noi înşine sau un înger din cer ar veni să vă propovăduiască o Evanghelie, deosebită de aceea pe care v'am propovăduit -o noi, să fie anatema! Cum am mai spus, o spun şi acum: dacă vă propovăduieşte cineva o Evanghelie, deosebită de aceea pe care aţi primit -o, să fie anatema! Caut eu oare, în clipa aceasta, să capăt bunăvoinţa oamenilor, sau bunăvoinţa lui Dumnezeu? Sau caut să plac oamenilor? Dacă aş mai căuta să plac oamenilor, n'aş fi robul lui Hristos. Fraţilor, vă mărturisesc că Evanghelia propovăduită de mine, nu este de obîrşie omenească; pentrucă, n'am primit -o, nici n'am învăţat -o dela vreun om, ci prin descoperirea lui Isus Hristos. Aţi auzit, în adevăr, care era purtarea mea de altădată, în religiunea Iudeilor. Cum, adică, prigoneam peste măsură de mult Biserica lui Dumnezeu, şi făceam prăpăd în ea; şi cum eram mai înaintat în religiunea Iudeilor de cît mulţi din neamul meu, de o vîrstă cu mine. Eram însufleţit de o rîvnă nespus de mare pentru datinile strămoşeşti. Dar cînd Dumnezeu-care m'a pus deoparte din pîntecele maicii mele, şi m'a chemat prin harul Său, -a găsit cu cale să descopere în mine pe Fiul Său, ca să -L vestesc între Neamuri, îndată, n'am întrebat pe niciun om, nici nu m'am suit la Ierusalim la cei ce au fost apostoli înainte de mine, ci m'am dus în Arabia. Apoi m'am întors din nou la Damasc. După trei ani, m'am suit la Ierusalim să fac cunoştinţă cu Chifa, şi am rămas la el cincisprezece zile. Dar n'am văzut pe niciunul altul dintre apostoli, decît pe Iacov, fratele Domnului. În cele ce vă scriu, iată, înaintea lui Dumnezeu, nu mint. După aceea m'am dus în ţinuturile Siriei şi Ciliciei. Şi eram încă necunoscut la faţă Bisericilor lui Hristos, cari sînt în Iudea. Ele auzeau doar spunîndu-se: ,,Cel ce ne prigonea odinioară, acum propovăduieşte credinţa, pe care căuta s'o nimicească odinioară.`` Şi slăveau pe Dumnezeu din pricina mea.
