Many have sinned for a thing indifferent; And he that seeks to multiply gain will turn his eye away. A nail will stick fast between the joinings of stones; And sin will thrust itself in between buying and selling. Unless a man hold on diligently in the fear of the Lord, His house will soon be overthrown. In the shaking of a sieve, the refuse remains; So the filth of man in his reasoning. The furnace will prove the potter’s vessels; And the trial of a man is in his reasoning. The fruit of a tree declares the husbandry thereof; So is the utterance of the thought of the heart of a man. Praise no man before you hear him reason; For this is the trial of men. If you follow righteousness, you will obtain her, And put her on, as a long robe of glory. Birds will resort to their like; And truth will return to those who practise her. The lion lies in wait for prey; So does sin for those who work iniquity. The discourse of a godly man is always wisdom: But the foolish man changes as the moon. Among men void of understanding observe the opportunity; But stay continually among the thoughtful. The discourse of fools is an offence; And their laughter is in the wantonness of sin. The talk of a man of many oaths will make the hair stand upright; And their strife makes one stop his ears. The strife of the proud is a shedding of blood; And their reviling of each other is a grievous thing to hear. He that reveals secrets destroys credit, And will not find a friend to his mind. Love a friend, and keep faith with him: But if you reveal his secrets, You shall not pursue after him; For as a man has destroyed his enemy, So have you destroyed the friendship of your neighbor. And as a bird which you have loosed out of your hand, So have you let your neighbor go, and you will not catch him again: Pursue him not, for he is gone far away, And has escaped as a gazelle out of the snare. For a wound may be bound up, and after reviling there may be a reconcilement; But he that reveals secrets has lost hope. One that winks with the eye contriveth evil things; And no man will remove him from it. When you are present, he will speak sweetly, And will admire your words; But afterward he will writhe his mouth, And set a trap for you in your words. I have hated many things, but nothing like him; And the Lord will hate him. One that casts a stone on high casts it on his own head; And a deceitful stroke will open wounds. He that digs a pit will fall into it; And he that sets a snare will be taken therein. He that does evil things, they will roll upon him, And he will not know whence they have come to him. Mockery and reproach are from the haughty; And vengeance, as a lion, will lie in wait for him. They that rejoice at the fall of the godly will be taken in a snare; And anguish will consume them before they die. Wrath and anger, these also are abominations; And a sinful man will possess them.

Luca 23

S'au sculat toţi, şi au dus pe Isus înaintea lui Pilat. Şi au început să -L pîrască, şi să zică: ,,Pe omul acesta l-am găsit aţîţînd neamul nostru la răscoală, oprind a plăti bir Cezarului, şi zicînd că el este Hristosul, Împăratul.`` Pilat L -a întrebat: ,,Eşti Tu Împăratul Iudeilor?`` ,,Da``, i -a răspuns Isus, ,,sînt.`` Pilat a zis preoţilor celor mai de seamă şi noroadelor: ,,Eu nu găsesc nicio vină în omul acesta.`` Dar ei stăruiau şi mai mult, şi ziceau: ,,Întărîtă norodul, şi învaţă pe oameni prin toată Iudea, din Galilea, unde a început, pînă aici.`` Cînd a auzit Pilat de Galilea, a întrebat dacă omul acesta este Galilean. Şi cînd a aflat că este de supt stăpînirea lui Irod, L -a trimes la Irod, care se afla şi el în Ierusalim în zilele acelea. Irod, cînd a văzut pe Isus, s'a bucurat foarte mult; căci de mult dorea să -L vadă, din pricina celor auzite despre El; şi nădăjduia să -L vadă făcînd vreo minune. I -a pus multe întrebări; dar Isus nu i -a răspuns nimic. Preoţii cei mai de seamă şi cărturarii stăteau acolo, şi -L pîrau cu înferbîntare. Irod, cu ostaşii lui de pază, se purtau cu El cu dispreţ; şi, dupăce şi -a bătut joc de El, şi L -a îmbrăcat cu o haină strălucitoare, L -a trimes înapoi la Pilat. În ziua aceea, Irod şi Pilat s'au împrietenit unul cu altul, căci erau învrăjbiţi între ei mai înainte. Pilat a strîns pe preoţii cei mai de seamă, pe fruntaşi şi pe norod, şi le -a zis: ,,Mi-aţi adus înainte pe omul acesta ca pe unul care aţîţă norodul la răscoală. Şi iată că, dupăce l-am cercetat cu deamăruntul, înaintea voastră, nu l-am găsit vinovat de niciunul din lucrurile de cari -l pîrîţi. Nici Irod nu i -a găsit nici o vină, căci ni l -a trimes înapoi; şi iată că omul acesta n'a făcut nimic vrednic de moarte. Eu deci, după ce voi pune să -l bată, îi voi da drumul.`` La fiecare praznic al Paştelor, Pilat trebuia să le slobozească un întemniţat. Ei au strigat cu toţii într'un glas: ,,La moarte cu omul acesta, şi slobozeşte-ne pe Baraba!`` Baraba fusese aruncat în temniţă pentru o răscoală, care avusese loc în cetate, şi pentru un omor. Pilat le -a vorbit din nou, cu gînd să dea drumul lui Isus. Dar ei au strigat: ,,Răstigneşte -L, răstigneşte -L!`` Pilat le -a zis pentru a treia oară: ,,Dar ce rău a făcut? Eu n'am găsit nici o vină de moarte în El. Aşa că, dupăce voi pune să -L bată, Îi voi da drumul.`` Dar ei strigau în gura mare, şi cereau de zor să fie răstignit. Şi strigătele lor şi ale preoţilor celor mai de seamă au biruit. Pilat a hotărît să li se împlinească cererea. Le -a slobozit pe celce fusese aruncat în temniţă pentru răscoală şi omor, şi pe care -l cereau ei; iar pe Isus L -a dat în mînile lor, ca să-şi facă voia cu El. Pe cînd Îl duceau să -L răstignească, au pus mîna pe un anume Simon din Cirena, care se întorcea dela cîmp; şi i-au pus crucea în spinare, ca s'o ducă după Isus. În urma lui Isus mergea o mare mulţime de norod şi femei, cari se boceau, îşi băteau pieptul, şi se tînguiau după El. Isus S'a întors spre ele, şi a zis: ,,Fiice ale Ierusalimului, nu Mă plîngeţi pe Mine; ci plîngeţi-vă pe voi înşivă şi pe copiii voştri. Căci iată vor veni zile, cînd se va zice: ,Ferice de cele sterpe, ferice de pîntecele cari n'au născut, şi de ţîţele cari n'au alăptat!` Atunci vor începe să zică munţilor: ,Cădeţi peste noi!` Şi dealurilor: ,Acoperiţi-ne!` Căci dacă se fac aceste lucruri copacului verde, ce se va face celui uscat?`` Împreună cu El duceau şi pe doi făcători de rele, cari trebuiau omorîţi împreună cu Isus. Cînd au ajuns la locul, numit ,,Căpăţîna``, L-au răstignit acolo, pe El şi pe făcătorii de rele: unul la dreapta şi altul la stînga. Isus zicea: ,,Tată, iartă -i, căci nu ştiu ce fac!`` Ei şi-au împărţit hainele Lui între ei, trăgînd la sorţi. Norodul stătea acolo şi privea. Fruntaşii îşi băteau joc de Isus, şi ziceau: ,,Pe alţii i -a mîntuit; să Se mîntuiască pe Sine însuş, dacă este El Hristosul, Alesul lui Dumnezeu.`` Ostaşii de asemenea îşi băteau joc de El; se apropiau, Îi dădeau oţet, şi -I ziceau: ,,Dacă eşti Tu Împăratul Iudeilor, mîntuieşte-Te pe Tine însuţi!`` Deasupra Lui era scris cu slove greceşti, latineşti şi evreeşti: ,,Acesta este Împăratul Iudeilor.`` Unul din tîlharii răstigniţi Îl batjocorea, şi zicea: ,,Nu eşti Tu Hristosul? Mîntuieşte-Te pe Tine însuţi, şi mîntuieşte-ne şi pe noi!`` Dar celalt l -a înfruntat, şi i -a zis: ,,Nu te temi tu de Dumnezeu, tu, care eşti supt aceeaş osîndă? Pentru noi este drept, căci primim răsplata cuvenită pentru fărădelegile noastre; dar omul acesta n'a făcut nici un rău.`` Şi a zis lui Isus: ,,Doamne, adu-Ţi aminte de mine, cînd vei veni în Împărăţia Ta!`` Isus a răspuns: ,,Adevărat îţi spun că astăzi vei fi cu Mine în rai.`` Era cam pe la ceasul al şaselea. Şi s'a făcut întunerec peste toată ţara, pînă la ceasul al nouălea. Soarele s'a întunecat, şi perdeaua dinlăuntrul Templului s'a rupt prin mijloc. Isus a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Tată, în mînile Tale Îmi încredinţez duhul!`` Şi cînd a zis aceste vorbe Şi -a dat duhul. Sutaşul, cînd a văzut ce se întîmplase, a slăvit pe Dumnezeu, şi a zis: ,,Cu adevărat, omul acesta era neprihănit!`` Şi tot norodul, care venise la priveliştea aceea, cînd a văzut cele întîmplate, s'a întors, bătîndu-se în piept. Toţi cunoscuţii lui Isus şi femeile, cari -L însoţiseră din Galilea, stăteau departe, şi se uitau la cele ce se petreceau. Era un sfetnic al Soborului, numit Iosif, om bun şi evlavios, care nu luase parte la sfatul şi hotărîrea celorlalţi. El era din Arimatea, o cetate a Iudeilor, şi aştepta şi el Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. Omul acesta s'a dus la Pilat, şi a cerut trupul lui Isus. L -a dat jos de pe cruce, L -a înfăşurat într'o pînză de in, şi L -a pus într'un mormînt nou, săpat în piatră, în care nu mai fusese pus nimeni. Era ziua Pregătirii, şi începea ziua Sabatului. Femeile, cari veniseră cu Isus din Galilea, au însoţit pe Iosif; au văzut mormîntul şi felul cum a fost pus trupul lui Isus în el, s'au întors, şi au pregătit miresme şi miruri. Apoi, în ziua Sabatului, s'au odihnit, după Lege.

He that takes vengeance will find vengeance from the Lord; And he will surely make firm his sins. Forgive your neighbor the hurt that he has done you; And then your sins will be pardoned when you pray. Man cherisheth anger against man; And does he seek healing from the Lord? Upon a man like himself he has no mercy; And does he make supplication for his own sins? He being himself flesh nourishes wrath: Who will make atonement for his sins? Remember your last end, and cease from enmity: Remember corruption and death, and abide in the commandments. Remember the commandments, and be not angry with your neighbor; And remember the covenant of the Highest, and wink at ignorance. Abstain from strife, and you will diminish your sins: For a passionate man will kindle strife; And a man that is a sinner will trouble friends, And will make debate among those who are at peace. As is the fuel of the fire, so will it burn; And as the stoutness of the strife is, so will it burn: As is the strength of the man, so will be his wrath; And as is his wealth, so will he exalt his anger. A contention begun in haste kindles a fire; And a hasty fighting sheds blood. If you blow a spark, it will burn; And if you spit upon it, it will be quenched: And both these shall come out of your mouth. Curse the whisperer and double-tongued: For he has destroyed many that were at peace. A third person’s tongue has shaken many, And dispersed them from nation to nation; And it has pulled down strong cities, And overthrown the houses of great men. A third person’s tongue has cast out brave women, And deprived them of their labors. He that hearkens to it will not find rest, Nor shall he dwell quietly. The stroke of a whip makes a mark in the flesh; But the stroke of a tongue will break bones. Many have fallen by the edge of the sword: Yet not so many as those who have fallen because of the tongue. Happy is he that is sheltered from it, That has not passed through the wrath thereof; That has not drawn its yoke, And has not been bound with its bands. For the yoke thereof is a yoke of iron, And the bands thereof are bands of brass. The death thereof is an evil death; And Hades were better than it. It shall not have rule over godly men; And they shall not be burned in its flame. They that forsake the Lord shall fall into it; And it shall burn among them, and shall not be quenched: It shall be sent forth upon them as a lion; And as a leopard it shall destroy them. Look that you hedge your possession about with thorns; Bind up your silver and your gold; And make a balance and a weight for your words; And make a door and a bar for your mouth. Take heed lest you slip therein; Lest you fall before one that lies in wait.

Deaceea, fiindcă nu mai puteam răbda, am socotit mai bine să fim lăsaţi singuri în Atena, şi v'am trimes pe Timotei, fratele nostru şi slujitorul lui Dumnezeu în Evanghelia lui Hristos, ca să vă întărească şi să vă îmbărbăteze în credinţa voastră, pentruca nimeni din voi să nu se clatine în aceste necazuri; căci ştiţi singuri că la aceasta sîntem rînduiţi. Şi cînd eram la voi, v'am spus mai dinainte că vom avea să suferim necazuri, ceeace s'a şi întîmplat, cum bine ştiţi. Astfel, în nerăbdarea mea, am trimes să-mi aducă ştiri despre credinţa voastră, de teamă ca nu cumva să vă fi ispitit Ispititorul, şi osteneala noastră să fi fost degeaba. Dar chiar acum a venit Timotei dela voi la noi, şi ne -a adus veşti bune despre credinţa şi dragostea voastră, că totdeauna păstraţi o plăcută aducere aminte despre noi, şi că doriţi să ne vedeţi, cum dorim şi noi să vă vedem pe voi. Deaceea, fraţilor, în toate strîmtorările şi necazurile noastre, am fost mîngîiaţi cu privire la voi, prin credinţa voastră. Acum, da, trăim, fiindcă voi staţi tari în Domnul. Cum putem noi oare să mulţămim în deajuns lui Dumnezeu cu privire la voi, pentru toată bucuria, pe care o avem din pricina voastră, înaintea Dumnezeului nostru? Zi şi noapte Îl rugăm nespus să vă putem vedea faţa, şi să putem împlini ce mai lipseşte credinţei voastre. Însuş Dumnezeu, Tatăl nostru, şi Domnul nostru Isus Hristos să ne netezească drumul la voi! Domnul să vă facă să creşteţi tot mai mult în dragoste unii faţă de alţii şi faţă de toţi, cum facem şi noi înşine pentru voi, ca să vi se întărească inimile, şi să fie fără prihană în sfinţenie, înaintea lui Dumnezeu, Tatăl nostru, la venirea Domnului nostru Isus Hristos împreună cu toţi sfinţii Săi.
