A wise judge will instruct his people; And the government of a man of understanding will be well ordered. As is the judge of his people, so are his ministers; And as is the ruler of the city, such are all those who dwell therein. An uninstructed king will destroy his people; And a city will be established through the understanding of the powerful. In the hand of the Lord is the authority of the earth; And in due time he will raise up over it one that is profitable. In the hand of the Lord is the prosperity of a man; And upon the person of the scribe will he lay his honor. Be not angry with your neighbor for every wrong; And do nothing by works of violence. Pride is hateful before the Lord and before men; And in the judgement of both will unrighteousness err. Sovereignty is transferred from nation to nation, Because of iniquities, and deeds of violence, and greed of money. Why is earth and ashes proud? Because in his life he has cast away his bowels. It is a long disease; the physician mocketh: And he is a king today, and tomorrow he will die. For when a man is dead, He will inherit creeping things, and beasts, and worms. It is the beginning of pride when a man departs from the Lord; And his heart is departed from him that made him. For the beginning of pride is sin; And he that keeps it will pour forth abomination. For this cause the Lord brought upon them strange calamities, And overthrew them utterly. The Lord cast down the thrones of rulers, And set the meek in their stead. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, And planted the lowly in their stead. The Lord overthrew the lands of nations, And destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He took some of them away, and destroyed them, And made their memorial to cease from the earth. Pride has not been created for men, Nor wrathful anger for the offspring of women. What manner of seed has honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has honor? those who fear the Lord. What manner of seed has no honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has no honor? those who transgress the commandments. In the midst of kindred he that rules them has honor; And in the eyes of the Lord those who fear him. The rich man, and the honorable, and the poor, Their glorying is the fear of the Lord. It is not right to dishonor a poor man that has understanding; And it is not fitting to glorify a man that is a sinner. The great man, and the judge, and the mighty man, will be glorified; And there is not one of them greater than he that fears the Lord. Free men will minister to a wise servant; And a man that has knowledge will not murmur thereat. Be not over wise in doing your work; And glorify not yourself in the time of your distress. Better is he that labores, and abounds in all things, Than he that glorifieth himself, and lacketh bread. My son, glorify your soul in meekness, And give it honor according to the worthiness thereof. Who will justify him that sins against his own soul? And who will glorify him that dishonors his own life? A poor man is glorified for his knowledge; And a rich man is glorified for his riches. But he that is glorified in poverty, how much more in riches? And he that is inglorious in riches, how much more in poverty?

Приближались к Нему все мытари и грешники слушать Его. Фарисеи же и книжники роптали, говоря: Он принимает грешников и ест с ними. Но Он сказал им следующую притчу: кто из вас, имея сто овец и потеряв одну из них, не оставит девяноста девяти в пустыне и не пойдет за пропавшею, пока не найдет ее? А найдя, возьмет ее на плечи свои с радостью и, придя домой, созовет друзей и соседей и скажет им: порадуйтесь со мною: я нашел мою пропавшую овцу. Сказываю вам, что так на небесах более радости будет об одном грешнике кающемся, нежели о девяноста девяти праведниках, не имеющих нужды в покаянии. Или какая женщина, имея десять драхм, если потеряет одну драхму, не зажжет свечи и не станет мести комнату и искать тщательно, пока не найдет, а найдя, созовет подруг и соседок и скажет: порадуйтесь со мною: я нашла потерянную драхму. Так, говорю вам, бывает радость у Ангелов Божиих и об одном грешнике кающемся. Еще сказал: у некоторого человека было два сына; и сказал младший из них отцу: отче! дай мне следующую мне часть имения. И отец разделил им имение. По прошествии немногих дней младший сын, собрав все, пошел в дальнюю сторону и там расточил имение свое, живя распутно. Когда же он прожил все, настал великий голод в той стране, и он начал нуждаться; и пошел, пристал к одному из жителей страны той, а тот послал его на поля свои пасти свиней; и он рад был наполнить чрево свое рожками, которые ели свиньи, но никто не давал ему. Придя же в себя, сказал: сколько наемников у отца моего избыточествуют хлебом, а я умираю от голода; встану, пойду к отцу моему и скажу ему: отче! я согрешил против неба и пред тобою и уже недостоин называться сыном твоим; прими меня в число наемников твоих. Встал и пошел к отцу своему. И когда он был еще далеко, увидел его отец его и сжалился; и, побежав, пал ему на шею и целовал его. Сын же сказал ему: отче! я согрешил против неба и пред тобою и уже недостоин называться сыном твоим. А отец сказал рабам своим: принесите лучшую одежду и оденьте его, и дайте перстень на руку его и обувь на ноги; и приведите откормленного теленка, и заколите; станем есть и веселиться! ибо этот сын мой был мертв и ожил, пропадал и нашелся. И начали веселиться. Старший же сын его был на поле; и возвращаясь, когда приблизился к дому, услышал пение и ликование; и, призвав одного из слуг, спросил: что это такое? Он сказал ему: брат твой пришел, и отец твой заколол откормленного теленка, потому что принял его здоровым. Он осердился и не хотел войти. Отец же его, выйдя, звал его. Но он сказал в ответ отцу: вот, я столько лет служу тебе и никогда не преступал приказания твоего, но ты никогда не дал мне и козленка, чтобы мне повеселиться с друзьями моими; а когда этот сын твой, расточивший имение свое с блудницами, пришел, ты заколол для него откормленного теленка. Он же сказал ему: сын мой! ты всегда со мною, и все мое твое, а о том надобно было радоваться и веселиться, что брат твой сей был мертв и ожил, пропадал и нашелся.

The wisdom of the lowly will lift up his head, And make him to sit in the midst of great men. Commend not a man for his beauty; And abhor not a man for his outward appearance. The bee is little among such as fly; And her fruit is the chief of sweetmeats. Glory not in the putting on of raiment, And exalt not yourself in the day of honor; For the works of the Lord are wonderful, And his works are hidden among men. Many kings have sat down upon the ground; And one that was never thought of has worn a diadem. Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; And men of renown have been delivered into other men’s hands. Blame not before you have examined: Understand first, and then rebuke. Answer not before you have heard; And interrupt not in the midst of speech. Strive not in a matter that concerns you not; And where sinners judge, sit not you with them. My son, be not busy about many matters: For if you meddle much, you will not be unpunished; And if you pursue, you will not overtake; And you will not escape by fleeing. There is one that toileth, and labores, and makes haste, And is so much the more behind. There is one that is sluggish, and has need of help, Lacking in strength, and that abounds in poverty; And the eyes of the Lord looked upon him for good, And he set him up from his low estate, And lifted up his head; And many marveled at him. Good things and evil, life and death, Poverty and riches, are from the Lord. The gift of the Lord remains with the godly, And his good pleasure will prosper forever. There is that waxes rich by his wariness and pinching, And this is the portion of his reward: When he says, I have found rest, And now will I eat of my goods; Yet he knows not what time will pass, And he will leave them to others, and die. Be stedfast in your covenant, and be conversant therein, And wax old in your work. Marvel not at the works of a sinner; But trust the Lord, and abide in your labor: For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord swiftly on the sudden to make a poor man rich. The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly; And in an hour that comes swiftly he makes his blessing to flourish. Say not, What use is there of me? And what from henceforth will my good things be? Say not, I have sufficient, And from henceforth what harm will happen to me? In the day of good things there is a forgetfulness of evil things; And in the day of evil things a man will not remember things that are good. For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord To reward a man in the day of death according to his ways. The affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of delight; And in the last end of a man is the revelation of his deeds. Call no man blessed before his death; And a man will be known in his children. Bring not every man into your house; For many are the plots of the deceitful man. As a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the heart of a proud man; And as one that is a spy, he looks upon your falling. For he lies in wait to turn things that are good into evil; And in things that are praiseworthy he will lay blame. From a spark of fire a heap of many coals is kindled; And a sinful man lies in wait for blood. Take heed of an evil-doer, for he contriveth wicked things; Lest haply he bring upon you blame forever. Receive a stranger into your house, and he will distract you with brawls, And estrange you from your own.

Впрочем, братия мои, радуйтесь о Господе. Писать вам о том же для меня не тягостно, а для вас назидательно. Берегитесь псов, берегитесь злых делателей, берегитесь обрезания, потому что обрезание — мы, служащие Богу духом и хвалящиеся Христом Иисусом, и не на плоть надеющиеся, хотя я могу надеяться и на плоть. Если кто другой думает надеяться на плоть, то более я, обрезанный в восьмой день, из рода Израилева, колена Вениаминова, Еврей от Евреев, по учению фарисей, по ревности — гонитель Церкви Божией, по правде законной — непорочный. Но что для меня было преимуществом, то ради Христа я почел тщетою. Да и все почитаю тщетою ради превосходства познания Христа Иисуса, Господа моего: для Него я от всего отказался, и все почитаю за сор, чтобы приобрести Христа и найтись в Нем не со своею праведностью, которая от закона, но с тою, которая через веру во Христа, с праведностью от Бога по вере; чтобы познать Его, и силу воскресения Его, и участие в страданиях Его, сообразуясь смерти Его, чтобы достигнуть воскресения мертвых. Говорю так не потому, чтобы я уже достиг, или усовершился; но стремлюсь, не достигну ли я, как достиг меня Христос Иисус. Братия, я не почитаю себя достигшим; а только, забывая заднее и простираясь вперед, стремлюсь к цели, к почести вышнего звания Божия во Христе Иисусе. Итак, кто из нас совершен, так должен мыслить; если же вы о чем иначе мыслите, то и это Бог вам откроет. Впрочем, до чего мы достигли, так и должны мыслить и по тому правилу жить. Подражайте, братия, мне и смотрите на тех, которые поступают по образу, какой имеете в нас. Ибо многие, о которых я часто говорил вам, а теперь даже со слезами говорю, поступают как враги креста Христова. Их конец — погибель, их бог — чрево, и слава их — в сраме, они мыслят о земном. Наше же жительство — на небесах, откуда мы ожидаем и Спасителя, Господа нашего Иисуса Христа, Который уничиженное тело наше преобразит так, что оно будет сообразно славному телу Его, силою, которою Он действует и покоряет Себе все.
