Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Asshur, was told that the children of Israel had prepared for war, had shut up the passages of the hill country, had fortified all the tops of the high hills, and had laid impediments in the plains. Then he was exceedingly angry, and he called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast, and he said to them, “Tell me now, you sons of Canaan, who are these people who dwell in the hill country? What are the cities that they inhabit? How large is their army? Where is their power and their strength? What king is set over them, to be the leader of their army? Why have they turned their backs, that they should not come and meet me, more than all that dwell in the west?” Then Achior, the leader of all the children of Ammon, said to him, “Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth concerning these people who dwell in this hill country, near to the place where you dwell. No lie will come out of the mouth of your servant. These people are descended from the Chaldeans. They sojourned before this in Mesopotamia, because they didn’t want to follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of the Chaldeans. They departed from the way of their parents, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew. Their parents cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days. Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Canaan. They lived there, and prospered with gold and silver, and with exceedingly much cattle. Then they went down into Egypt, for a famine covered all the land of Canaan. They sojourned there until they had grown up. They became a great multitude there, so that one could not count the population of their nation. Then the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtly with them, and brought them low, making them labor in brick, and made them slaves. They cried to their God, and he struck all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues; so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight. God dried up the Red sea before them, and brought them into the way of Sinai Kadesh-Barnea, and they cast out all that lived in the wilderness. They lived in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength everyone in Heshbon. Passing over Jordan, they possessed all the hill country. They cast out before them the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Shechemite, and all the Girgashites, and they lived in that country many days. And while they didn’t sin not before their God, they prospered, because God who hates iniquity was with them. But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many severe battles, and were led captives into a land that was not theirs. The temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by their adversaries. And now they have returned to their God, and have come up from the dispersion where they were dispersed, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate. And now, my lord and master, if there is any error in this people, and they sin against their God, we will consider what this thing is in which they stumble, and we will go up and overcome them. But if there is no lawlessness in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we will be a reproach before all the earth.” It came to pass, when Achior had finished speaking these words, all the people standing around the tent murmured. The great men of Holofernes, and all that lived by the sea side and in Moab, said that he should kill him. For, they said, “We will not be afraid of the children of Israel, bcause, behold, they are a people that has no power nor might to make the battle strong. Therefore now we will go up, and they will be a prey to be devoured by all your army, Lord Holofernes.”

Och han stod upp och begav sig därifrån, genom landet på andra sidan Jordan, till Judeens område. Och mycket folk församlades åter omkring honom, och åter undervisade han dem, såsom hans sed var. Då ville några fariséer snärja honom, och de trädde fram och frågade honom om det vore lovligt för en man att skilja sig från sin hustru. Men han svarade och sade till dem: »Vad har Moses bjudit eder?» De sade: »Moses tillstadde att en man fick skriva skiljebrev åt sin hustru och så skilja sig från henne.» Då sade Jesus till dem: »För edra hjärtans hårdhets skull skrev han åt eder detta bud. Men redan vid världens begynnelse 'gjorde Gud dem till man och kvinna'. 'Fördenskull skall en man övergiva sin fader och sin moder. Och de tu skola varda ett kött.' Så äro de icke mer två, utan ett kött. Vad nu Gud har sammanfogat, det må människan icke åtskilja.» När de sedan hade kommit hem, frågade hans lärjungar honom åter om detsamma. Och han svarade dem: »Den som skiljer sig från sin hustru och tager sig en annan hustru, han begår äktenskapsbrott mot henne. Och om en hustru skiljer sig från sin man och tager sig en annan man, då begår hon äktenskapsbrott. Och man bar fram barn till honom, för att han skulle röra vid dem; men lärjungarna visade bort dem. När Jesus såg detta, blev han misslynt och sade till dem: »Låten barnen komma till mig, och förmenen dem det icke; ty Guds rike hör sådana till. Sannerligen säger jag eder: Den som icke tager emot Guds rike såsom ett barn, han kommer aldrig ditin.» Och han tog dem upp i famnen och lade händerna på dem och välsignade dem. När han sedan begav sig åstad för att fortsätta sin väg, skyndade en man fram och föll på knä för honom och frågade honom: »Gode Mästare, vad skall jag göra för att få evigt liv till arvedel?» Jesus sade till honom: »Varför kallar du mig god? Ingen är god utom Gud allena. Buden känner du: 'Du skall icke dräpa', 'Du skall icke begå äktenskapsbrott', 'Du skall icke stjäla', 'Du skall icke bära falskt vittnesbörd', 'Du skall icke undanhålla någon vad honom tillkommer', Hedra din fader och din moder.'» Då svarade han honom: »Mästare, allt detta har jag hållit från min ungdom.» Då såg Jesus på honom och fick kärlek till honom och sade till honom: »Ett fattas dig: gå bort och sälj allt vad du äger och giv åt de fattiga; då skall du få en skatt i himmelen. Och kom sedan och följ mig.» Men han blev illa till mods vid det talet och gick bedrövad bort, ty han hade många ägodelar. Då såg Jesus sig omkring och sade till sina lärjungar: »Huru svårt är det icke för dem som hava penningar att komma in i Guds rike!» Men lärjungarna häpnade vid hans ord. Då tog Jesus åter till orda och sade till dem: »Ja, mina barn, huru svårt är det icke att komma in i Guds rike! Det är lättare för en kamel att komma igenom ett nålsöga, än för den som är rik att komma in i Guds rike.» Då blevo de ännu mer häpna och sade till varandra: »Vem kan då bliva frälst?» Jesus såg på dem och sade: »För människor är det omöjligt, men icke för Gud, ty för Gud är allting möjligt.» Då tog Petrus till orda och sade till honom: »Se, vi hava övergivit allt och följt dig.» Jesus svarade: »Sannerligen säger jag eder: Ingen som för min och evangelii skull har övergivit hus, eller bröder eller systrar, eller moder eller fader, eller barn, eller jordagods, ingen sådan finnes, som icke skall få hundrafalt igen: redan här i tiden hus, och bröder och systrar, och mödrar och barn, och jordagods, mitt under förföljelser, och i den tillkommande tidsåldern evigt liv. Men många som äro de första skola bliva de sista, medan de sista bliva de första.» Och de voro på vägen upp till Jerusalem. Och Jesus gick före dem, och de gingo där bävande; och de som följde med dem voro uppfyllda av fruktan. Då tog han åter till sig de tolv och begynte tala till dem om vad som skulle övergå honom: »Se, vi gå nu upp till Jerusalem, och Människosonen skall bliva överlämnad åt översteprästerna och de skriftlärde, och de skola döma honom till döden och överlämna honom åt hedningarna, och dessa skola begabba honom och bespotta honom och gissla honom och döda honom; men tre dagar därefter skall han uppstå igen.» Då trädde Jakob och Johannes, Sebedeus' söner, fram till honom och sade till honom: »Mästare, vi skulle vilja att du läte oss få vad vi nu tänka begära av dig.» Han frågade dem: »Vad viljen I då att jag skall låta eder få?» De svarade honom: »Låt den ene av oss i din härlighet få sitta på din högra sida, och den andre på din vänstra.» Men Jesus sade till dem: »I veten icke vad I begären. Kunnen I dricka den kalk som jag dricker, eller genomgå det dop som jag genomgår?» De svarade honom: »Det kunna vi.» Då sade Jesus till dem: »Ja, den kalk jag dricker skolen I få dricka, och det dop jag genomgår skolen I genomgå, men platsen på min högra sida och platsen på min vänstra tillkommer det icke mig att bortgiva, utan de skola tillfalla dem för vilka så är bestämt.» När de tio andra hörde detta, blevo de misslynta på Jakob och Johannes. Då kallade Jesus dem till sig och sade till dem: »I veten att de som räknas för folkens furstar uppträda mot dem såsom herrar, och att deras mäktige låta dem känna sin myndighet. Men så är det icke bland eder; utan den som vill bliva störst bland eder, han vare de andras tjänare, och den som vill vara främst bland eder, han vare allas dräng. Också Människosonen har ju kommit, icke för att låta tjäna sig, utan för att tjäna och giva sitt liv till lösen för många.» Och de kommo till Jeriko. Men när han åter gick ut ifrån Jeriko, följd av sina lärjungar och en ganska stor hop folk, satt där vid vägen en blind tiggare, Bartimeus, Timeus' son. När denne hörde att det var Jesus från Nasaret, begynte han ropa och säga: »Jesus, Davids son, förbarma dig över mig.» Och många tillsade honom strängeligen att han skulle tiga; men han ropade ännu mycket mer: »Davids son, förbarma dig över mig.» Då stannade Jesus och sade: »Kallen honom hit.» Och de kallade på den blinde och sade till honom: »Var vid gott mod, stå upp; han kallar dig till sig.» Då kastade han av sig sin mantel och stod upp med hast och kom fram till Jesus. Och Jesus talade till honom och sade: »Vad vill du att jag skall göra dig?» Den blinde svarade honom: »Rabbuni, låt mig få min syn.» Jesus sade till honom: »Gå; din tro har hjälpt dig.» Och strax fick han sin syn och följde honom på vägen.

And when the disturbance of the men that were around the council had ceased, Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Asshur said to Achior and to all the children of Moab before all the people of the foreigners, “And who are you, Achior, and the hirelings of Ephraim, that you have prophesied among us as today, and have said that we should not make war with the race of Israel, because their God will defend them? And who is God but Nebuchadnezzar? He will send forth his might, and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them; but we his servants will strike them as one man. They will not sustain the might of our horses. For with them we will burn them up. Their mountains will be drunken with their blood. Their plains will be filled with their dead bodies. Their footsteps will not stand before us, but they will surely perish, says king Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he said, ‘The words that I have spoken will not be in vain.’ But you, Achior, hireling of Ammon, who have spoken these words in the day of your iniquity, will see my face no more from this day, until I am avenged of the race of those that came out of Egypt. And then the sword of my army, and the multitude of those who serve me, will pass through your sides, and you will fall among their slain when I return. Then my servants will bring you back into the hill country, and will set you in one of the cities of the ascents. You will not perish until you are destroyed with them. And if you hope in your heart that they will not be taken, don’t let your countenance fall. I have spoken it, and none of my words will fall to the ground. ” Then Holofernes commanded his servants who waited in his tent to take Achior, and bring him back to Bethulia, and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel. So his servants took him, and brought him out of the camp into the plain, and they moved from the midst of the plains into the hill country, and came to the springs that were under Bethulia. When the men of the city saw them on the top of the hill, they took up their weapons, and went out of the city against them to the top of the hill. Every man that used a sling kept them from coming up, and cast stones against them. They took cover under the hill, bound Achior, cast him down, left him at the foot of the hill, and went away to their lord. But the children of Israel descended from their city, and came to him, untied him, led him away into Bethulia, and presented him to the rulers of their city; which were in those days Ozias the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel. Then they called together all the elders of the city; and all their young men ran together, with their women, to the assembly. They set Achior in the midst of all their people. Then Ozias asked him what had happened. He answered and declared to them the words of the council of Holofernes, and all the words that he had spoken in the midst of the princes of the children of Asshur, and all the great words that Holofernes had spoken against the house of Israel. Then the people fell down and worshipped God, and cried, saying, “O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and pity the low estate of our race. Look upon the face of those who are sanctified to you this day.” They comforted Achior, and praised him exceedingly. Then Ozias took him out of the assembly into his house, and made a feast for the elders. They called on the God of Israel for help all that night.

Men såsom medarbetare förmana vi eder ock att icke så mottaga Guds nåd, att det bliver utan frukt. Han säger ju: »Jag bönhör dig i behaglig tid, och jag hjälper dig på frälsningens dag.» Se, nu är den välbehagliga tiden; se, nu är frälsningens dag. Härvid vilja vi icke i något stycke vara till någon anstöt, på det att vårt ämbete icke må bliva smädat. Fastmer vilja vi i allting bevisa oss såsom Guds tjänare, i mycken ståndaktighet, under bedrövelse och nöd och ångest, under hugg och slag, under fångenskap och upprorslarm, under mödor, vakor och svält, i renhet, i kunskap, i tålamod och godhet, i helig ande, i oskrymtad kärlek, med sanning i vårt tal, med kraft från Gud, med rättfärdighetens vapen både i högra handen och i vänstra, under ära och smälek, under ont rykte och gott rykte, såsom villolärare, då vi dock äro sannfärdiga, såsom okända, fastän vi äro väl kända, såsom döende, men se, vi leva, såsom tuktade, men likväl icke till döds, såsom bedrövade, men dock alltid glada, såsom fattiga, medan vi dock göra många rika, såsom utblottade på allt, men likväl ägande allt. Vi hava nu upplåtit vår mun och talat öppet till eder, I korintier. Vårt hjärta har vidgat sig för eder. Ja, det rum I haven i vårt inre är icke litet, men i edra hjärtan är allenast litet rum. Given oss då lika för lika -- om jag nu får tala såsom till barn -- ja, vidgen också I edra hjärtan. Gån icke i ok tillsammans med dem som icke tro; det bleve omaka par. Vad har väl rättfärdighet att skaffa med orättfärdighet, eller vilken gemenskap har ljus med mörker? Huru förlika sig Kristus och Beliar, eller vad delaktighet har den som tror med den som icke tror? Eller huru låter ett Guds tempel förena sig med avgudar? Vi äro ju ett den levande Gudens tempel, ty Gud har sagt: »Jag skall bo i dem och vandra ibland dem; jag skall vara deras Gud, och de skola vara mitt folk.» Alltså: »Gån ut ifrån dem och skiljen eder ifrån dem, säger Herren; kommen icke vid det orent är. Då skall jag taga emot eder och vara en Fader för eder; och I skolen vara mina söner och döttrar, säger Herren, den Allsmäktige.»
