A wise judge will instruct his people; And the government of a man of understanding will be well ordered. As is the judge of his people, so are his ministers; And as is the ruler of the city, such are all those who dwell therein. An uninstructed king will destroy his people; And a city will be established through the understanding of the powerful. In the hand of the Lord is the authority of the earth; And in due time he will raise up over it one that is profitable. In the hand of the Lord is the prosperity of a man; And upon the person of the scribe will he lay his honor. Be not angry with your neighbor for every wrong; And do nothing by works of violence. Pride is hateful before the Lord and before men; And in the judgement of both will unrighteousness err. Sovereignty is transferred from nation to nation, Because of iniquities, and deeds of violence, and greed of money. Why is earth and ashes proud? Because in his life he has cast away his bowels. It is a long disease; the physician mocketh: And he is a king today, and tomorrow he will die. For when a man is dead, He will inherit creeping things, and beasts, and worms. It is the beginning of pride when a man departs from the Lord; And his heart is departed from him that made him. For the beginning of pride is sin; And he that keeps it will pour forth abomination. For this cause the Lord brought upon them strange calamities, And overthrew them utterly. The Lord cast down the thrones of rulers, And set the meek in their stead. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, And planted the lowly in their stead. The Lord overthrew the lands of nations, And destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He took some of them away, and destroyed them, And made their memorial to cease from the earth. Pride has not been created for men, Nor wrathful anger for the offspring of women. What manner of seed has honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has honor? those who fear the Lord. What manner of seed has no honor? the seed of man. What manner of seed has no honor? those who transgress the commandments. In the midst of kindred he that rules them has honor; And in the eyes of the Lord those who fear him. The rich man, and the honorable, and the poor, Their glorying is the fear of the Lord. It is not right to dishonor a poor man that has understanding; And it is not fitting to glorify a man that is a sinner. The great man, and the judge, and the mighty man, will be glorified; And there is not one of them greater than he that fears the Lord. Free men will minister to a wise servant; And a man that has knowledge will not murmur thereat. Be not over wise in doing your work; And glorify not yourself in the time of your distress. Better is he that labores, and abounds in all things, Than he that glorifieth himself, and lacketh bread. My son, glorify your soul in meekness, And give it honor according to the worthiness thereof. Who will justify him that sins against his own soul? And who will glorify him that dishonors his own life? A poor man is glorified for his knowledge; And a rich man is glorified for his riches. But he that is glorified in poverty, how much more in riches? And he that is inglorious in riches, how much more in poverty?

Наближа́лись до Нього всі ми́тники й грі́шники, щоб послу́хати Його. Фарисеї ж та книжники нарікали й казали: „Приймає Він грішників та з ними їсть“. А Він їм розповів оцю притчу, говорячи: „Котрий з вас чоловік, мавши сотню овець і загубивши одну з них, не покине в пустині тих дев'ятидесяти́ й дев'яти́, та й не пі́де шукати загинулої, аж поки не зна́йде її? А знайшовши, кладе на раме́на свої та радіє. І, прийшовши додому, скликає він дру́зів і сусідів, та й каже до них: „Радійте зо мною, бо знайшов я вівцю свою тую загу́блену“. Говорю вам, що так само на небі радітимуть більш за одно́го грішника, що кається, аніж за дев'ятдесятьо́х і дев'ятьо́х праведників, що не потребу́ють покая́ння!... Або яка жінка, що має десять драхм, коли згубить драхму одну, не засвічує світла, і не мете хати, і не шукає уважно, аж поки не зна́йде? А знайшовши, кличе при́ятельок та сусідок та каже: „Радійте зо мною, бо знайшла я загу́блену дра́хму!“ Так само, кажу вам, радість буває в Божих анголі́в за одного грішника, який кається“. І Він оповів: „У чоловіка одно́го було́ два сини. І молодший із них сказав ба́тькові: „Дай мені, батьку, належну частину маєтку!“ І той поділив поміж ними маєток. А по небагатьох днях зібрав син молодший усе, та й подавсь до далекого кра́ю, і розтратив маєток свій там, живучи́ марнотра́тно. А як він усе прожив, настав голод великий у тім кра́ї, — і він став бідува́ти. І пішов він тоді і пристав до одно́го з мешка́нців тієї землі, а той вислав його на поля́ свої па́сти свине́й. I бажав він напо́внити шлунка свого хоч стручка́ми, що їли їх свині, та ніхто не давав їх йому́. Тоді він спам'ята́вся й сказав: „Скільки в батька мого наймиті́в мають хліба аж на́дмір, а я отут з голоду гину! Устану, і піду́ я до батька свого, та й скажу йому: „Прогрішився я, отче, против неба та су́проти тебе. Недостойний я вже зватись сином твоїм; прийми ж мене, як одно́го з своїх наймитів“. І, вставши, пішов він до ба́тька свого́. А коли він далеко ще був, його ба́тько вгледів його, — і перепо́внився жа́лем: і побіг він, і кинувсь на шию йому, і зачав цілувати його! І озвався до нього той син: „Прогрішився я, отче, против неба та супроти тебе, і недостойний вже зватися сином твоїм“. А батько рабам своїм каже: „Принесіть негайно одежу найкращу, і його зодягні́ть, і персня подайте на руку йому, а санда́лі на но́ги. Приведіть теля відгодо́ване та заколіть, — будемо їсти й радіти, бо цей син мій був мертвий — і ожив, був пропав — і знайшовся!“ І почали веселитись вони. А син ста́рший його був на полі. І коли він ішов й наближа́вся до дому, почув музи́ки та танці. І покли́кав одно́го зо слуг, та й спитав: „Що це таке?“ А той каже йому: „То вернувся твій брат, і твій ба́тько звелів заколоти теля відгодо́ване, — бож здоровим його він прийняв“. І розгнівався той, — і ввійти не хотів. Тоді вийшов батько його й став просити його. А той відповів і до батька сказав: „Ото, стільки ро́ків служу́ я тобі, і ніко́ли нака́зу твого не пору́шив, — ти ж ніко́ли мені й козеняти не дав, щоб із при́ятелями своїми поті́шився я. Коли ж син твій вернувся оцей, що проїв твій маєток із блудни́цями, — ти для нього звелів заколоти теля відгодо́ване“. І сказав він йому: „Ти за́вжди зо мною, дитино, і все моє — то твоє! Веселитись та тішитись треба було́, бо цей брат твій був мертвий — і ожив, був пропав — і знайшовся!“

The wisdom of the lowly will lift up his head, And make him to sit in the midst of great men. Commend not a man for his beauty; And abhor not a man for his outward appearance. The bee is little among such as fly; And her fruit is the chief of sweetmeats. Glory not in the putting on of raiment, And exalt not yourself in the day of honor; For the works of the Lord are wonderful, And his works are hidden among men. Many kings have sat down upon the ground; And one that was never thought of has worn a diadem. Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; And men of renown have been delivered into other men’s hands. Blame not before you have examined: Understand first, and then rebuke. Answer not before you have heard; And interrupt not in the midst of speech. Strive not in a matter that concerns you not; And where sinners judge, sit not you with them. My son, be not busy about many matters: For if you meddle much, you will not be unpunished; And if you pursue, you will not overtake; And you will not escape by fleeing. There is one that toileth, and labores, and makes haste, And is so much the more behind. There is one that is sluggish, and has need of help, Lacking in strength, and that abounds in poverty; And the eyes of the Lord looked upon him for good, And he set him up from his low estate, And lifted up his head; And many marveled at him. Good things and evil, life and death, Poverty and riches, are from the Lord. The gift of the Lord remains with the godly, And his good pleasure will prosper forever. There is that waxes rich by his wariness and pinching, And this is the portion of his reward: When he says, I have found rest, And now will I eat of my goods; Yet he knows not what time will pass, And he will leave them to others, and die. Be stedfast in your covenant, and be conversant therein, And wax old in your work. Marvel not at the works of a sinner; But trust the Lord, and abide in your labor: For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord swiftly on the sudden to make a poor man rich. The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly; And in an hour that comes swiftly he makes his blessing to flourish. Say not, What use is there of me? And what from henceforth will my good things be? Say not, I have sufficient, And from henceforth what harm will happen to me? In the day of good things there is a forgetfulness of evil things; And in the day of evil things a man will not remember things that are good. For it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord To reward a man in the day of death according to his ways. The affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of delight; And in the last end of a man is the revelation of his deeds. Call no man blessed before his death; And a man will be known in his children. Bring not every man into your house; For many are the plots of the deceitful man. As a decoy partridge in a cage, so is the heart of a proud man; And as one that is a spy, he looks upon your falling. For he lies in wait to turn things that are good into evil; And in things that are praiseworthy he will lay blame. From a spark of fire a heap of many coals is kindled; And a sinful man lies in wait for blood. Take heed of an evil-doer, for he contriveth wicked things; Lest haply he bring upon you blame forever. Receive a stranger into your house, and he will distract you with brawls, And estrange you from your own.

Зрештою, браття мої, радійте у Господі! Писати вам те саме не прикро мені, а для вас це навча́льне. Стережіться собак, — стережіться працівникі́в лихих, стережіться обрі́зання! Бо обрі́зання — то ми, що слу́жимо Богові духом, а хвалимося Христом Ісусом, і не кладемо надії на тіло, хоч і я міг би мати надію на тіло. Як хто інший на тіло надіятись ду́має, то тим більше я, — обрізаний восьмого дня, з роду Ізраїля, з племени Веніяминового, єврей із євреїв, фарисей за Законом. Через горли́вість я був переслідував Церкву, бувши невинний, щодо праведности в Законі. Але те, що́ для мене було́ за надба́ння, те ради Христа я за втрату вважав. Тож усе я вважаю за втрату ради переважного позна́ння Христа Ісуса, мого Господа, що я ради Нього відмовився всьо́го, і вважаю все за сміття́, щоб придбати Христа, щоб знайтися в Нім не з власною праведністю, яка від Зако́ну, але з тією, що з віри в Христа, праведністю від Бога за вірою, щоб пізнати Його й силу Його воскресіння, та участь у му́ках Його, уподо́блюючись Його смерті, аби досягнути я́кось воскресіння з мертвих. Не тому́, що я вже досягнув, або вже вдоскона́лився, але пра́гну, чи не досягну́ я того, чим і Христос Ісус досягнув був мене. Браття, я себе не вважаю, що я досягну́в. Та тільки, забуваючи те, що поза́ду, і спішачи́ до того, що попе́реду, я женусь до мети за нагородою високого по́клику Божого в Христі Ісусі. Тож усі, хто досконалий, ду́маймо це; коли ж ду́маєте ви щось інше, то Бог вам відкриє й це. Та до чо́го дійшли ми, поступаймо в тім самім далі. Будьте до мене подібні, браття, і дивіться на тих, хто пово́диться так, як маєте ви за взір нас. Багато бо хто, що про них я вам часто казав, а тепер говорю́ навіть пла́чучи, пово́дяться, як вороги хреста Христового. Їхній кінець — то загибіль, шлу́нок — їхній бог, а слава — в їхньому соромі... Вони ду́мають тільки про зе́мне! Життя ж наше на небі, звідки ждемо́ й Спаси́теля, Господа Ісуса Христа, Який перемінить тіло нашого пони́ження, щоб стало подібне до славного тіла Його, силою, якою Він може і все підкорити Собі.
